>> tonight superbowl xlvi goes to new york. the giants peat beat the pats 29 . new englanders weep in their brew over a second superbowl loss to the giants. it was a good game. >> it was a good game. it was kind of slow at the beginning. i think the first half could be described boring. but the final four minutes, things got exciting. i didn't have a horse in this race, but i was nervous. we were all nervous up in the sports department. tom brady in his fifth superbowl, a rematch against eli manning and the giants. first quarter, manning finds victor cruz in the end zone. patriots strike back.

>> reporter: they put together these ad groups, a group of critics that vote on which commercials they like this year. 150 people have packed this room to figure out which one will come out on top. once they had plenty to eat and drink, the panel took their instructions. >> we want to hear for the commercials. we don't care about the game. >> they sat back and casted their votes as the ads ran. administrators brought in a diverse crowd of all ages and they simply were looking to get one question answered. >> rate the commercials, how much they like or dislike them. >> reporter: as you would expect, there were mixed reactions over the spots that cost $3.5 million each for 30 seconds of airtime. >> i think they've been great. i loved the throw backs to classical music and classical rock. >> reporter: there were some favorites early on, even the technicians could tell. >> 8.47, yes. >> reporter: by reading numbers through high-tech equipment. >> i really liked the sir elton

different sunday evening. gone were about half of a fence and the occupiers. those who remain were doing their best to keep mcpherson square clean. residents who live across from the encampment as well as bills owners are happy something was done to address the rat infestation and other health concerns. >> i feel bad for the park. the park didn't do anything wrong. i understand what the guys are trying to say. everybody's frustrated. >> i think it's been a very inefficient process of moving it out. it's something that should have been done awhile ago. now they need to go ahead and do it. >> reporter: national park service crews were back at it sunday morning, cleaning four months worth of occupation. not just mcpherson square, but also in freedom plaza, where things were much more calm and no arrests were reported. the downtown business improvement business wants the u.s. park police to keep the presence here in mcpherson square 24/7 so they can monitor activities at the encampment. they also want the u.s. park

service to have maintenance crews on hand to clean up any mess and repair any damages to the square. police are also enforcing the no camping rules at both locations. >> we have to keep the tents open. we can't have bedding in it. we're not allowed to sleep. >> reporter: occupy faith d.c., a coalition of religious groups is working to provide one bed and food to some displaced occupiers. >> we knew it was important for us to help them. >> reporter: meanwhile it remains to be seen if the national park service will get the funds to return the square to the preencampment condition. armando trull, 9 news now. >> a footnote. last year before occupy d.c. took over that square, the national parks service spent some $400,000 in stimulus money to beautify the park. tomorrow, george hugely goes on trial for murder. the former university of virginia lacrosse player from maryland is accused of beating his ex-girlfriend to death. yardly love was also a lacrosse

player at uva. she was 22 from maryland. it was in may of 2010. hugely admitted to kicking down love's bedroom door and shaking her several times and that her head hit the wall. now his defense attorney will argue that yardly love died from an irregular heartbeat after taking a prescribed drug and drinking alcohol. that murder shook the uva campus community. >> i remember at the vigil when we had complete silence at the end moving into a moment of silence and just hearing the somebody's that came thereafter. i think that was critical. it was key for the community to just have that released. >> i think there's no question that something like this caused students, faculty and staff to step back and say, we need to do a better job of not just dealing with our own situation but looking out for each other. >> it prompted policy changes that make it easier for students in violent relationships to get help, including restraining orders. the judge banned news cameras

boarding that ship after being disinfected. republican front-runner mitt romney is looking toward colorado and minnesota these days. both states hold caucuses on tuesday. romney's win in nevada this weekend has him taking three of the five republican contests thus far. but as drew levinson reports tonight, the other candidates say the primary season is far from over. >> reporter: newt gingrich isn't letting two straight double digit losses to mitt romney derail his fight for the gop presidential nomination. >> michael will be over in february to show that there is a way to change washington. there's a way to get us back on the right track. >> reporter: romney, who won the nevada caucuses saturday took sunday off. he's looking ahead to tuesday's contest in colorado, minnesota and missouri, as well as further down the road to the general election and president obama. >> mr. president, we welcome any good news on the jobs front. but it is thanks to the innovation of the american people in the private sector

and secondhand smoke. in the first study of its kind disease control researchers say more than one in five high school students and middle schoolers ride in cars while others are smoking. overall 22% of teens and preteens were exposed to secondhand smoke in cars in 2009. this kind of secondhand smoke exposure has been linked to breathing problems and allergy symptoms. the study is based on national surveys done at public and private high schools and middle schools. after a monster invasion, it looks like members are on the downward slope. researchers suspect the wet fall weather across the atlantic may be the reason. jerry of pest management at the university of maryland says the wet weather probably knocked many of the bugs off trees and crops and drowned them. however, researchers say predators and parasites could also be responsible. hi, anny. >> hi, bruce. as you're waking up tomorrow

police in washington state say a home explosion killed josh powell and his two sons. powell is a person of interest in his wife's disappearance in utah. that was back in 2009. we have the latest tonight. >> reporter: an explosion destroyed this washington state home where the husband of a missing utah woman lived. investigators say josh powell and the couple's two young sons died when the home burst into flames. >> i just heard a huge explosion. it shook my house. i ran outside and the whole house was on fire. >> reporter: firefighters are picking through the smoldering

debris to pinpoint what caused the explosion. >> preliminary information again ac seller rants being -- accelerants being used, set some small explosions. >> reporter: the home went up moments after a worker from child protective services dropped off the sons for a supervised visit with their father. police tell the associated press, powell allegedly blocked the social worker from entering the home. moments before the explosion, she called the supervisor to report the smell of gas. josh powell is a person of interest in the disappearance of suzanne powell back in december of 2009. >> i did not kill my wife as has been alleged. >> reporter: he claimed he had taken his sons camping on the night she vanished. powell kept custody of his sons until last fall, when his father was arrested for voier rice many and -- voyerism and child pornography. minutes before the explosion, powell sent an e-mail simply

saying i'm sorry. goodbye. cbs news. >> police say the social worker was not hurt. talk about a not so happy meal. a mother in north carolina determined to get food from a mcdonald's drive-thru window ended up getting shocked with a stun gun instead. it happened in north carolina. police say the 37-year-old skipped the order screen and pay window driving right up to the pickup window and tried to place an order. when employees told her to go to the back of the line, she got mad and refused to move for 20 minutes. workers eventually called the cops who used a taser to subdue and handcuff the woman. the worst part. this all played out in front of a 3-year-old child sitting in the back seat at the time. the toddler was eventually placed in the custody of child family services. crews are working around the clock in memphis, tennessee tonight, to clean up the aftermath of a freight train derailment. the north southern derailed this morning during a busy

intersection. several container cars left the track spewing train parts all over. it also ripped away the railroad ties supposed to hold the train tracks in place. fortunately, nobody was hurt. wilson barbie was on his way to buy doughnuts this morning when he came upon the wreck. >> this is obviously the busiest parts of town right here. someone would have gotten crushed. there's no doubt in my mind. >> investigators are still trying to determine exactly what caused the derailment. president barack obama residents spent the day digging out after a weekend snowstorm, 8 to 14 inches of snow that fell in western and central nebraska. eastern nebraska saw -- some areas saw more than a foot of snow. >> six feet of snow in colorado. good skiing, head out west. >> got to work. and hopefully nothing like that headed this way. >> no. in fact, a lot of snow for skiers including myself would like to see snow in the

mountains. no snow in the forecast to really work on the snow back. we are look at milder weather headed this way before our next shot for some wintery weather comes middle of the week. right now, let's take a look at the weather camera. clear skies out there. ridge of high pressure building in. we could see areas of fog also developing overnight. temperatures now 37 degrees under clear skies. winds are fairly light. west/northwest at around 6 miles per hour. we've got up to 45 degrees up there. that is right on par where we should be for this time of year. the low was 38. we did pick up a trace of precip and finally a little bit of snow in the d.c. area early this morning. here's a look at the satellite radar picture where you can see. we did see clouds clear on out today, thanks to a ridge of high pressure building in. we'll see lots of sunshine tomorrow and into tuesday. so clear and cold overnight. some patchy fog possible for that morning commute. otherwise, lots of sunshine. it's milder though for your monday and tuesday. some showers are possible for

the giants and patriots met in the superbowl, the giants weren't really expected to stand a chance. the patriots were undefeated that season heading into the final game until the helmet catch ended all of that. this year the pats were favored only by 3, but the eli manning is the comeback kid. five final quarter come backs this season. he did it again today. never over until it's over. pats have a ball back with a minute to go. plenty of time for tom brady. in the end, the giants were able to hold off new england to win superbowl xlvi. >> there at the end when we had an opportunity in the fourth quarter, we've been in those situations where we knew we had no more time left, we had to go down and score. the guys stepped up and made some great plays. >> our nine sports insider david will join me in studio to break down the big game. plus to address the peyton manning rumors that don't seem to be going anywhere any time

you know, every year the girl scouts hawk the cookies and most are hard to reject. for many of us, the hardest parts come in waiting for the cookies to arrive. now one troop came up with a way to hurry. they set up a drive through service complete with menus and a team of girl scouts and their mothers ready to take orders. >> we wanted to make it easier for maybe the customer so they're not having to bundle not only their groceries when they're shopping at a grocery store, but also out of
