super bowl bowl. a game that saw the unlikely new york giants claim their fourth super bowl title in a nailbiter and just like they did in 2008, the giants knocked off the new england patriots. this time by a score of 21-17. giants quarterback eli manning led the team on an 88-yard fourth quarter drive for the win. tom coughlin, 65 years old, became the oldest coach to win a super bowl. much more on the giants big win and controversy during the halftime show. you knew it was coming. we'll have that later on in the broadcast. meanwhile, trouble at the university of massachusetts following the new england loss. unruly fans clash with police. police use smoke grenades to disperse the crowd. they smashed bottles. crazy kids. social media sites buzzed with promises of unrest. at least 14 people were arrested. these u.s. marines in

afghanistan were able to watch the super bowl. the marines are based in camp pendleton in california. no word on which team they were cheering for. u.s. troops have watched the last 11 super bowls in afghanistan. to politics now. during a pre-super bowl interview, president obama says he deserves to be re-elected. meanwhile, candidates are gearing up. susan mcginnis has more. good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. after mitt romney's win in nevada this weekend, he seems to be solidifying himself as the gop front-runner. but you'd never know it talking to his rivals. mitt romney's on the hunt for his next big victory. just two days after winning the nevada caucuses, the former massachusetts governor plans to court voters in colorado today ahead of its contest tomorrow. s he did in his victory speech saturday night, romney is expected to continue taking direct aim at president obama. >> this president's misguided

improvement. this race is a long way from being over. >> but with each victory, it appears it's only getting tougher to stop romney's momentum. and the latest poll also shows that by a ratio of 2-1 the less they like him the more they learn about romney. for the president's overall approval rating it stands at 50%. >> susan good to see you. thanks. also in that pre-super bowl interview, president obama commented on the growing concerns over iran's nuclear program and whether or not israel has decided to attack. >> i don't think that israel has made a decision on what they need to do. i think they, like us, believe that iran have to stand down on its nuclear weapons program. and we have mobilized the international community in a way that is unprecedented. >> mr. obama says israel has a right to be concerned. he also said he hopes for a

diplomatic solution but that the u.s. has not taken any options off the table. the egyptian government says it's doing what it can but can't stop egyptian judges from prosecuting 19 americans and foreign employees of nonprofit groups. among the americans is the son of transportation secretary ray lahood. the charges are unclear, but the government blames the pro democracy and human rights groups for triggering unrest in egypt. the u.s. is threatening to cut off $1.5 billion in aid. syrian troops are shelling the city this morning. at least 50 people are dead. more than 200 people were killed during a government attack on saturday. it was the same day russia and china vetoed a u.n. security council resolution calling on president bashar al assad to step down. hillary clinton called it a tragedy. >> those countries that refuse to support the arab league plan bear full responsibility for

protecting the brutal regime in damascus. >> the u.n. estimates more than 5400 people have been killed since march. the u.s. is proposing an international coalition to support the syrian opposition. rescue workers in eastern pakistan are frantically trying to reach people trapped inside a collapse building. some gas cylinders exploded inside a factory today. at least two are dead, 12 others pulled from the rubble. in a residential area. there are questions this morning from washington state child welfare officials. the young children of missing utah woman susan powell are dead. killed in a fire apparently set by her husband. we have the tragic story. >> home video shows the intense flames after an explosion ripped through this house in washington state killing three people. investigators say two young boys died along with their father, josh powell. powell is the husband of a

missing utah woman. >> this wasn't an accident. this is josh powell who we believe killed his kids and himself. >> firefighters are picking through the smoldering debris it.point what caused the explosion. powell accused to have used accelerant. officials say the home blew up moments after a worker wa child protective services dropped the boys off for a supervised visit with their father. the social worker told police powell blocked her. she called her supervisor to report the smell of gas from inside, then the home was in flames. >> heard a huge explosion. it shook my house. >> it was horrific. the flames were huge. >> josh powell is a person of interest in the 2009 disappearance of susan powell in utah. >> i did not kill my wife as has been alleged. >> powell claimed he was off camping with his sons the night susan vanished. he managed to keep custody of his kids until last fall when his father was arrested for voierrism and child pornography.

one of her guest singers, m.i.a., extended her middle finger and appears to utter a profanity. i bet somebody is trying to choke her this choke. they tried to -- the network issued an apology and later the nfl issued this statement. the obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate. very disappointing. we apologize to our fans. back to the old timers doing super bowl performances now. that was fun while it lasted. cbs money watch time. the flap over a super bowl commercial and wall street's big bounce. ashley morrison has more. >> good morning. great political leaders are meeting to meet a new austerity deal to stave off bankruptcy. leading members of greece's parliament are opposed to a plan that would cut private sector pay. the cuts are demanded by the lenders in charge of a proposed $171 billion bailout if grooet doesn't get that money, it could go bankrupt next month.

markets in asia had a mixed day. nikkei gained more than 1% to finish out a three month high. hang seng finished lower about a quarter percent. wall street got a boost on friday. the dow finished the week up 201 points. it's now at the highest point since 2008. while the nasdaq added 89. the house of representatives will take up the stock act this week. the measure bans members of congress or their staffs from using inside information to make stock deals. the senate overwhelmingly was approved in legislation last week. >> giants and patriots weren't the only rivals going to head to head. before the game asked general motors not to run this ad. it shows chevy drivers surviving an apocalypse and the driver of a ford is not so lucky. it cost quite a bit. the average price for a 30-second spot was $3.5 million.

giants final drive away. mario manningham inasmuch as a pass from eli manning and incredibly keeps both feet in inbounds. the winning td, bradshaw stops and falls across the goal. giants didn't want him to score. the patriots at 57 seconds. the hail mary pass as the clock runs out hit the turf. the giants win 21-17. they take home the vince lomb d lombardi trophy and eli manning is named mvp. >> offensively, i thought we played well, played smart. there at the end when we had an opportunity in the fourth quarter, we've been in those situations where we had no more time left. we had to score. the guys stepped up, made great plays. >> this is manning's second mvp award. another heartbreaking loss for tom brady once again. >> it was a very hard-fought game. you know, we fought to the end. very proud of that.

here's another look at the weather in some cities around the country. d.c., mostly sunny, 55 degrees. partly cloudy in atlanta, 59 degrees. 44 in detroit, 37 in denver and morning pog in seattle, 49 degrees. a strong earthquake hit the philippines overnight. a tsunami alert was issued after the magnitude 6.8 quake struck.

it's about 400 miles southeast of manila. at least 13 people killed, dozens missing. several buildings and homes were destroyed or damaged. power was knocked out and huge waves knocked away some cottages. it's been just over two years since the 7.0 earthquake leveled most of haiti. more than 300,000 killed and 300,000 injured. the recovery has been slow but one victim is working hard to make a difference. >> and then below here. >> her right leg broken and left mangled beyond repair, three days after the earthquake, this woman was told it would have to be amputated. she was really, really afraid. she was crying all day, all night. she thought she wouldn't walk anymore. >> today, she's not only walking, she's helping run the country's first organized rehabilitation program. >> everyone encouraging him. he can walk like sheila without

till 9:00 a.m. allegany mountains, those areas will be dealing with visibility issues which are down for a quarter mile or so when you look at it from petersburg out toward cumberland. we're doing fine here. 23 culpeper. 28 with the fog in cumberland. no fog and 28 in easton. again we're going into the 50s. what a nice start to the week. >> great start to the week and not a bad start to the rush hour. good morning, everybody. if you're planning to head around town, you see just one triangle behind me. that means we just have one issue overnight. it was on the southbound side of the bw parkway after route 410. it was a car that went into the woods. they had to wait for a crane to pull it out. that's why you may have heard there were some lanes blocked. right now everything is clear inside the beltway on the bw parkway i'm happy to say. we'll take a live look at 270 on the southbound side. no problems to report here at
