inside but we have a nice tv here and speakers. >> reporter: for giants fans everywhere, this was a day to remember. another super bowl trophy is headed to new york. manuel gallegus, cbs news, indianapolis. >> besides the draw of the game, the commercials are always one of the most anticipated things about the super bowl. >> they really turn into much of a tradition as the game itself. the party was hosted by our media partner "u.s.a. today." >> reporter: for the past 24 years the "u.s.a. today" has put together these groups, a room full of super bowl commercial critics who vote on which they like the best. about 150 people have packed this room to figure out which ones will come out on top. once they've had plenty to eat and drink, they took their instructions. >> we want you here for the commercials. we don't care about the game. >> reporter: they sat back and casted their votes. they brought in a diverse crowd of all ages and they simply

were looking to get one question answered. >> they rated the commercials how much they liked or disliked them. >> reporter: as you would expect, there were mixed reactions over the spots that cost $3.5 million each for 30 seconds of air time. >> i think they've been great. i loved the throwbacks to classical music and classical rock. >> reporter: there were some favorites early on. even the technicians could tell. >> 8.47. >> reporter: reading numbers through high-tech equipment. >> the door rote toes -- doritos with the dog. >> i loved elton john. >> the pug with the shoes racing the greyhound. >> reporter: others see the ads as a form of therapy. >> the commercials are good to keep you entertained for these moments that we're behind by one point. the commercials ease the pain a little bit. >> reporter: of course now the obvious question. which commercial won here in washington. the panel chose this one.

if you want to get in on the action, head over to ad meter and cast a vote using your nays book account -- your facebook account till tuesday. another type of contest republican presidential candidate mitt romney is hoping to continue his winning streak. >> he picked up his third victory in nevada saturday night. night gingrich is vowing to keep his campaign going till the g.o.p. convention this summer. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: mitt romney's on the hunt for his next big victory. just two days after winning the nevada caucuses, the former massachusetts governor plans to court voters in colorado today ahead of its contest tomorrow. as he did in his victory speech saturday night, romney is expected to continue take direct aim at president obama.

people looking for another option. >> this race is a long way from being over. >> reporter: but with each victory it appears it's only getting tougher to stop rom if i's momentum. >> at this point president barack obama says he does not think israel has made up its mind with whether or not to attack iran over his nuclear program. in an interview with nbc, the president said the united states is working side by side with israel to resolve the iran situation and they hope it can be done diplomatically. today a former university of virginia lacrosse player goes on trial for murder. george hiewgley from chevy chase, maryland is accused of beating to dead his 22-year-old girlfriend. police say he admitted to kicking down her bedroom door and shaking her several times and that her head hit the wall. but now his defense attorney will argue that she died from

an irregular heart beat after taking a prescribed drug and drinking alcohol. the trial of a former d.c. mayoral candidate is set to begin today. brown was arrested last september after being pulled over for an unpaid ticket. federal authorities are investigating his claims. u.s. park police say they will once again conduct compliance checks in freedom plaza. >> this comes nearly two days after clearing out occupy d.c. protesters from mcpherson square. authorities say protesters are not being evicted but are being asked to remove all camping gear. under current rules, protesters can remain on sight for 24-hour

protests. 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the central philippines triggering a local tsunami. it hit noon monday and may have possibly caused some damage in buildings that were structurally weak. so far one death has been reported. former pan main yum dictator is in intensive care. the 77-year-old was transferred from prison where he's been serving a 60-year sentence for killing political opponents in the 1980s. panama's health minister says his blood pressure was very high nearly leading to a struck. police believe a fire and subsequent explosion was intentionally sparked at a home in washington state. they think josh powell was trying to kill himself and his two young sons and unfortunately he did. he has been a person of interest since his wife susan powell disappeared in utah two years ago. the home burst into flames just moments after a social worker arrived with the children for a

the s&p 500 was up by 19. the major averages added between 1.5% and 3% last week alone. american airlines recent bankruptcy filing is fueling merger talk. the threat after merger one of the factors hanging over the unions. bankrupt eastman kodak wants to break up with the oscars. it's trying to end its sponsorship. it filed for bankruptcy about two weeks ago. it's requesting that it servers its contract with the kodak theater in l.a. no doubt they will be able to find some other sponsor but it just doesn't quite happen that quickly. >> doesn't make sense to sponsor something when you're in bankruptcy. nearly a quarter of all teenagers exposed to secondhand

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. four of us stayed up to watch all the game. this is a rested man so he's clear and conscious and able to tell you about the forecast. >> first quarter was interesting. >> it was. >> i dvr 'ed the game. >> there's some games that i do dvr and watch all the time. >> for the commercials and the half time show. i wanted to see it. >> i can understand that. >> my wife told me about madonna it's just not the same

thing. the controversy i must see to myself. no controversy today. we have your bus stop forecast. sunshine. frosty conditions out there. a lot of frost driving in. you'll be scraping the windshield. frost and temps in the 20s. clear skies although we've got fog in the mountains. out toward cumberland looking at visibilities a quarter mile or so with a dense fog advisory till 9:00 a.m. mid-30s 8:00 a.m. upper 40s by noon and 4:00 p.m. 53. we're going to top out around 55. average high still in the mid- 40s. wind southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. by tonight back in the mid-40s. the weather headline a frosty start with the fog west. we'll have a mild day today and again tomorrow. both days we'll see highs in the middle 50s. but a clipper comes wednesday into wednesday night. that could bring us some flurries, even light snow. i think it's going to be cold

enough to support a little wintry weather here. doesn't look like a lot of it. temperatures above freezing. kind of like saturday afternoon. have the snow saturday evening but the road stayed wet. we could get something similar to that on wednesday. a lot of time to watch it. mid-20s in gaithersburg to 28 in easton. out to the west we've got 32 in winchester but 23 in culpeper. i said cumberland with the fog 28. outside good visibility. temperature 32 under clear skies. feels like 27, though, with a 5 mile an hour wind out of the south, southwest. our humidity right now at 82%. this is kind of neat. a little storm system spinning out here in the pacific. this is making its way toward the west coast. middle of the country relatively quiet except for a little snow in southwestern colorado. then down in the southeast we have an area of rain from new orleans headed over to mobile. then down in florida, the keys,

there's a lot of rain down in south florida where temperatures are still in the 70s at this hour. miami last check 73. around here high pressure is building in but we're going to have this northwesterly flow. that's where we're going to watch the chill and the clipper come from as we head into wednesday. today, tonight, tomorrow fairly quiet. a little system passing off the carolina coast. some showers for them. tomorrow notice the snow showers to our north. this system is going to drop off toward the south. the chilly air trying to move in toward ohio and new york state here for tuesday evening. for us, though, watch how this energy then comes in by wednesday morning across ohio and kentucky. that's going to approach us middle i think afternoon on wednesday into wednesday night. that's when we've got the chance for our own flurries or light snow to develop around here. otherwise pretty nice start to the week. grab the jacket this morning but this afternoon we're in the 50s. mid-50s. tonight low to mid-30s for most of us. tomorrow back in the mid-50s.

route 4 pennsylvania avenue heading toward oxon hill and the wilson bridge. lanes are open t. is incident free in toward alexandria. coming up in my next report, we'll take a peek into virginia. >> see you then. thanks. it is 4:49 now. a warning to parents about teens and secondhand smoke. in the first national estimate of its kind, a report from the centers for disease control researcher says more than one in five high school students and middle schoolers ride in cars while others are smoking. overall 22% of teenagers and preteens were exposed to secondhand smoke in cars in 2009. in this kind of secondhand smoke -- and this kind of secondhand smoke expost sur has been -- exposure has been linked to breathing problems, allergies and more. scientists have discovered a gene which raises the risk of a stroke. british researchers say people who inherited the gene from both parents had double the risk. doctors say a better underring of how this gene works could

lead to new screening techniques and drugs to treat and even prevent stroke. children left out of group activities tend to be less active on their own as well. researchers at kent state university set up a game so some children weren't able to participate in it. later those same kids had an opportunity to do physical activity on their own and did something sedentary instead. the social dynamic may be a contributing factor in the obesity epidemic. what did you have for breakfast today? probably not something as good as what we're about to show you. >> a wellness expert shares the secret ingredients to an antiaging smoothy that she swears helps her stay healthy and young. >> reporter: this is juicing. this woman swears about t. she uses a high powered blender to mix up the concoction.

upper 40s. high around 55. the 3:00 p.m. temperature of 53 degrees. pretty quiet still on the roads this morning. let's go to monika samtani for more. it is quiet. here's the roosevelt bridge basically between the beltway and the river. very nice and light. no problems to report on the beltway between annandale and tysons corner. more at 5:01. after more than a decade of talking about it, plans are now in the works to revitalize the city of college park. the plans call for new development for the university of maryland's east campus. they include a four-star hotel, graduate student housing complexes and some upscale restaurants. the first phase of the development focuses on the corner of paint branch parkway on route 1. the major construction is expected to start next spring. a fairfax county high school student is a big winner and will soon be going to new york city. samantha bryant has won the grand prize in david's bridal

contest. thousands of students across the country submitted sketches of their dream properly dresses. she not only gets a trip to new york but a $25,000 scholarship and her design will be featured in "17 magazine." this weekend in chicago and new york, people paid tribute to the soul train founder. don cornelius started the show while working at a chicago radio station. he was 75 years old when he died last wednesday in los angeles of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. in new york hundreds of people showed up for a flash mob soul train dance line in times square. 4:57. macy gray prepares to release a new album with some pretty familiar sounds on it. >> we have that and more in this look at entertainment headlines. >> reporter: macy gray is
