drunken driving almost killed him. this is 9news now. every 50 minutes, that's one an hour or so, somebody will die because of a drunk driver. >> that is according to the national highway traffic safety administration. our andrea mccarren has the story of one young man who almost came a part of that sad statistic. andrea. >> reporter: that's right, derek and anita. his name is dylan lewis and he admits he was driving drunk. as you know a few times in a reporter's career, we're lucky enough to do an interview we can't wait to share. 9 wants you to know this was the case when we met dylan in a maryland trauma center. >> i just remember waking up outside of my truck on the ground shaking, bleeding and thinking that was it. but i wasn't okay with that. >> do you have any vital signs. >> yes. >> reporter: we met dylan lewis at the lowest moment of his life. >> i wanted to fight. i wanted to live.

i wanted to stay here. and i did that. >> reporter: driving drunk on a cold january night, dylan lost control of his truck, hit a telephone pole and flipped over. >> for some people, they don't get this lucky. they don't get the second chance that i got. they don't get to wake up after the drunken car accident. >> reporter: we met the 21-year-old at university of maryland shock trauma in baltimore hours after he was brought in by ambulance, minutes before he went into surgery. >> i don't want to touch alcohol ever again. i need to make more responsibility as a 21-year-old and i need to get my act together. >> i got a call from shock trauma about 6:00 in the morning telling me where he was. every mother can probably imagine how i felt. >> reporter: dylan told us the toughest part of this ordeal was facing his mother. >> the first thing he did was apologize. i was just so happy he was alive. >> i was thinking that was it. >> reporter: we showed her the

interview dylan did with us from his hospital bed. >> we agreed that there would be no alcohol in this house ever again. >> drinking alcohol isn't for me. i would rather spend my time looking for things i can enjoy doing sober. >> somebody not too much older than you are who decided to drink and drive. and he nearly lost his hand. >> reporter: dylan's raw honesty already seems to be impacting lives. we met him just by chance while visiting the trauma center with a group of offenders. teenagers getting a glimpse of the real life consequences of their destructive behavior. >> just seeing blood all over my clothes. >> let this be a wakeup call because i never want to see any one of you guys here as a patient. >> i hope that those kids really learn that they have families and they have lives. and if they have dreams, drinking is going to take it all away from them. >> reporter: and dylan and his mom are joining us live now in

the studio. this is still really emotional for both of you, isn't it? >> uh-huh. >> yes, it is. >> reporter: it is so good to see you. now, as we were just discussing, so many teenagers are so reluctant to give up drinking. what is your message for them, dylan? >> i just like to hope that more teenagers can decide to take more responsibility before something can happen to them. i don't want anybody to have to live this kind of experience. there's smarter, safer things to do to be more productive in your life? isn't that true. and lessee? what do you want to add to that. >> i'm just really proud of dylan for doing this, and i hope at least one person makes a better decision because of it. >> reporter: thank you so much. and dylan wants to know how to

because clearly it's widespread. it's easy to buy. these kids are getting away with it and this is not anything we want to support here in dc. >> to watch that investigation again or to send us any tips you have, go to wusa9.com and click on 9 wants you to know. an unnamed staff member of the dc city council is among 130 present and former city workers apparently collecting unemployment benefits while they were working and also getting a paycheck from the city. gary nurenberg reports the latest case of corruption in dc government has legitimate unemployment beneficiaries furious. >> reporter: some unemployed washingtonians got the news standing outside the department of human services. paid government workers filing claims for and collecting unemployment checks. $840,000 in fraud government wide. >> a variety of agencies were still going through the list to try to determine their multiple

agencies. >> never. never been on unemployment. i've always worked. before i lost my job, i worked 20 years. 8 years for one company, 12 years for the other company. and i was kind of devastated when i lost my job. >> reporter: but when maryland smith of southeast applied for benefits, she found someone had stolen her identity causing a storm of paperwork and a continuing fight to get her unemployment benefits from dc. >> i'm waking up every day going outside to see if people took my car yet, because they're going to repossess the truck because i can't pay them because i owe everybody. >> reporter: so to hear corrupt government workers were collecting benefits when she says she is legitimately owed $1,800. >> that's crazy. i can't even get my back money but they taking all the money. they don't care. they don't care about us, the little people out here. they really don't care. >> reporter: miss smith worked in property management for years and says she's anxious to find another job. but having government workers steal unemployment money while she fights the bureaucracy to get what she feels she's earned

has her angry. about 90 district workers have been put on leave while the investigation continues. a step towards being fired. and, derek, that leaves paid leave. >> all right. thank you, gary. new at 11:00, this is more than 50 firefighters to put out a fire in dc tonight. it got going around 8:45 in the 4,000-block of blaine street. that is right near benning road. nobody was actually living in the one and a half story home and so far there has been no injuries reported. as far as the cause, no word on that. streets near the area are still shut down. nearly two years after yeardley love's death, her ex-boyfriend charged with her murder goes on trial in a virginia courtroom. today george huguely pleaded not guilty to each of the six charges against him. bruce leshan was in the courtroom in charlottesville where the case has drawn media attention. >> reporter: the judge is already keeping the attorneys late as he struggles to seat a

jury that has not already decided that huguely is guilty. one of the jurors actually met yeardley love when she babysat at a neighbor's house. a lovely girl, the neighbor said. another serves on the rescue squad and talked to the medics that tried to resuscitate yeardley love nearly two years ago when she was found dead in a pool of blood. huguely is in the courtroom for the first time since the murder. he is much thinner than he used to be, wearing a blue blazer that appears to be about two sizes too large. yeardley love's family also here all wearing pink scars in her memory. -- scarves in her memory. her mother cried softly when bruce appeared. tonight the alleged mastermind behind the murder of an alexandria activist has been arrested. prince george's county police say 26-year-old tyrone lewis is the one who helped to murder

lenny harris. officers say he is the man photographed using harris' atm card just hours after harris disappeared last year. robbery was the motive for the deadly crime. lewis was already behind bars in virginia on an unrelated car theft charge. the announcement of the third arrest comes on the same day as harris's funeral. and police say they are still looking for the person who made the anonymous phone call that led them to harris's body in a fort washington well. do you have trouble getting your kids to school on time? be forewarned. a couple in waterford, virginia have to go on trial next month. they are charged with a misdemeanor for excessive tardiness in getting their three kids to the school. they could face a fine of $3,000. now, so far this year the kids have been late about 30 times. last year one child was tarredy 68 times and absent 15 days. but the father doesn't think the law applies to their situation.

. 10 gallons of gasoline. that's what police found inside a home. powell's home in washington state literally exploded in a ball of fire. police say the father planned it all. but tonight there is plenty of finger pointing. powell had been a person of interest in his wife's disappearance and powell lost custody of the boys after his father was charged with having child porn in another house they once shared. now, the boys were living with their maternal grandparents, but powell had been granted occasional visits, a social worker had just dropped them off. >> it's senseless. just senseless. slaughter two innocent children. >> police say before yesterday's

fire, powell sent an ominous e-mail to his attorney. it read i'm sorry. goodbye. the republicans hoping to replace president obama in november are turning their attention now to colorado and minnesota. those states hold caucuses tomorrow and mitt romney's first place finish in nevada over the weekend gave him 14 more delegates and that keeps him as the front runner in the gop race. that means newt gingrich needs a good showing after losing ground the last couple of weeks. rick santorum is also hoping to grab some supporters as ron paul is counting on the caucus states where he has a strong organization. well, it seems you can get almost anything from a vending machine these days. even emergency contraceptives. at this university in pennsylvania, students can get plan b from a vending machine inside the campus health center. anybody 17 years or older can already buy the so-called morning after pill over-the-counter. you don't need a prescription. but the university pays $25 for each dose and they pass on the full coast to the students.

they say they -- cost to the students. they say they use the machine for privacy reasons. we all heard the story about monster in-laws. a woman in colorado put her brother-in-law's obituary in the paper. the problem was he wasn't dead. in fact, he says he had no idea this had happened until his friends and family started showing up at his front door very upset. >> actually his cousin came first. she was crying. i'm like it's not true. and then her mom came and my mom was calling me telling me that my -- some of her family was calling her. >> all sorts of confusion and drama. now, edgar says his sister-in-law won't say why she did such a thing. he says because the incident caused so much grief, he filed harassment charges against her. >> that is going to keep on going. all right. they're creepy, cookie, mysterious and spooky, they're the adams family. stink bugs. and tonight we have some bad news. you know all of the mild temperatures we've been having so far this winter, well, you'll

we're looking at temperatures not as cold as last night. still in the 40s downtown. officially 42. pressure falling off a little bit. look at the dew points come up now. earlier this evening dew points in the 20s. now it's in the low 30s. and it's kind of a good rule of thumb temperature will not fall below the dew point unless we get transported dryer air, and that does not appear likely. satellite picture, radar combined. there is our little system. it's not a big storm at all. it's moisture. it doesn't have much support. it could be our wednesday snow. the problem is it's bad timing. it looks like it's going to roll in for the evening commute. that freaks people out. the good news is surface temperature will be above freezing but precipitation can be falling. in the meantime, we are clear tonight. very nice. here is the deal. we're looking at maybe some frost again in the morning on your windshield. not as heavy as it was this morning. that was incredible frost this morning. but keep the scraper handy. milder tomorrow, though. that is good. the winds will die down. grab your sunglasses.

and then some snow possible on wednesday. and the problem is it will be in the afternoon and also towards evening. here is a look at the forecast. computer forecast. it's clear. no blobs anywhere in the morning. that's good. we'll put it into motion. no blobs by lunch time. so the sunglasses will be needed. by evening, no blobs either. now, we get into wednesday. this is wednesday morning. clouds come in pretty quickly. snow starts breaking out in the mountains. out towards cumberland and garrett county. then we get into 11:15 just before lunch time. now we see some light snow breaking out in culpeper and orange. and it does appear it's going to be snow despite the surface temperature. upper atmosphere is going to be colder. so i've taken rain out of the forecast pleatly for wednesday. if anything -- completely for wednesday. if anything falls, it will be snow. overnight full moon. lows 28-38. go to our website wusa9.com and check out my blog. i talk finally about the storm we had this time a year ago.

breezy and chilly. glasses and sunglasses a good idea. 30s and 40s. by afternoon, a terrific day. high temperatures near 55 and winds light. so winds won't even be a factor tomorrow afternoon. so 53 or 54 is going to feel good. we'll break it down, 28-38. clear skies in the morning. by noon sunshine. 46-61. and then by evening, gorgeous. temperatures 51-56. keep the sunglasses heavy. the next three days we lowered the surface temperature. so snow possible evening commute. 38 degrees. still above freezing. and just chilly but sunny on thursday. temps go back into the mid 40s. next seven days, it stays chilly and then temps go down a little bit gradually. we're still going to hold in the mid 40s it looks like on friday. maybe low 40s on saturday. some clouds come in overnight saturday. some flurries. maybe a snow shower early sunday. not a big deal. a little colder on sunday. we're back in the mid 30s. and then on monday sunshine with temperatures in the upper 30s to
