wow. i'm deb deck. thanks for join -- i'm mike hydeck. thanks for joining us. no problems weather wise. tomorrow is going to be a little wet on the roads and maybe a little white on the grassy surfaces, especially north and west. today enjoy the sunshine and once again mild temperatures. here's our day planner. we start in the 30s and 40s. we're going into the 50s this afternoon. low to mid-50s. around 55 or so. noontime temperature 49. 5:00 p.m. temperature of 52 degrees. so another very comfortable day. we'll put everything in motion for you. had a little system, a weak one overnight produced a few rain showers off to the south. that has now left the region. we're left with clear to partly cloudy skies. temperatures as cold as 30. with the clear skies and light winds, it's 41 for reston. manassas, that's the cold spot now at 28 but it's still 45 in town. baden is 43.

upper marlboro 41. temperatures this afternoon very comfortable. low, maybe even mid-50s in some spots. it's now 5:00 a.m. straight up. monika is in your time saver traffic. i'm happy to say the rush hour is starting off nice and light and incident free as well. what more could you want? we'll start with maryland and the north side of town. no problems to report here on the beltway between college park and bethesda. we'll go to a live picture up in maryland and show what you it looks like here 270 southbound at route 121. again it looks pretty much like this southbound side as cow in from frederick down -- as you come in from frederick down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll go back over to the maps and this time to the west side of the town. all that construction you see here indicated by the triangle should be cleared up now in the tysons area and at the dulles toll road as well. you should be good to go there. we'll take another live look outside. if you're planning to head over to 66 and nutley street, there are no problems to report coming from the west all the

way from gainesville and to the beltway. coming up in my next report, we'll take another peek into virginia at 5:10. we are following breaking news out of fort washington. a family of five was found unconscience inside their home around 12:30 this morning. >> this one was in the home of the 8300 block of bernard drive. delia goncalves joins us live from that home with more on the investigation this morning. delia, good morning. >> reporter: mike, andrea, certainly a very tragic story. these family members are in critical condition at this very hour fighting for their lives after dangerous levels of carbon monoxide were found inside their home. firefighters responded to their home here in fort washington after doctors from children's hospital in d.c. could not reach the family. you see a child had been taken there earlier in the night. doctors there discovered that child had high levels of co in his blood. firefighters arrived, discovered mom, dad and three children ranging in the age from infant to preteen all

unconshens -- unconscience. anything over five parts per million is considered unhealthy. a very dangerous situation. it could have proved deadly had these family members been inside the home any loner. we don't know -- any longer. we don't know how long they were exposed to the carbon monoxide but the hopeful news is we're told when firefighter paramedics treated them on the scene, they were beginning to show some signs of improvement but they are still being treated at this very early hour in the hyperbaric chamber at baltimore shock trauma. they were all medevaced and being treated there in critical condition as i said. they are fighting for their lives. that one child, the sixth member of this family, is in more stable condition at children's hospital at this hour. coming up in another half-hour, my next live report, i'll tell

you more about the cause and what you can do to prevent another tragedy from striking your family coming up in a half- hour. back to you. >> see you then, delia. an amazing initiative by that hospital. police say the alleged mastermind behind the murder of an alexandria activist has now been arrested. prince george's county police say 26-year-old tyrone lewis helped murder lenny harris. officers say he's the man you see in a photograph using harris' atm card just hours after harris disappeared last year. police say robbery was the motive for the deadly crime. lewis was already behind bars in virginia on an unrelated arrest. this announcement comes on the same day that harris' funeral was. police are still looking for a person who made the anonymous call which led them to discover his body in a fort washington well. former university of virginia lacrosse player accused of killing his ex- girlfriend has pleaded not guilty in the case. george huguely is accused of

beating 22-year-old yeardley love to death in may of 2010. love played women's lacrosse at the university. huguely told investigators he kicked in love's bedroom door of then shook her which caused her head to hit the wall several times. he's facing six charges, including first-degree murder and grand larceny for allegedly taking love's computer. five minutes after 5:00. the latest in your money report. >> jessica doyle is watching the latest on wall street. >> wall street is watching greece. the country's prime minister is asking his cabinet to prepare a document on the implications of a greek bankruptcy and the possible exit from the euro zone. this comes after greece miss add deadline with creditors yesterday that would have allowed it to receive more bailout loans and it could default within weeks. wall street did not like this news but it finished the day. the dow stands at 12,845 after finishing the day down 17

points the nasdaq was off by 3 and the s&p 500 was down by about half a point. citibank has become the first american bank to offer its own credit card in china. up until now, western banks had to co-brand their cards with an asian bank. citibank rivals hope they'll allow more western banks to issue their own cards in china. boeing says there's no immediate safety concern of their 787 airliners. they have delivered five of the planes since september and all of them went to japan's airways. people are starring to wonder if the planes are cursed. they entered service last year after more than three years of delay. just can't seem to get that dream liner straight. >> that's a big plane. what do you have for us in the next half-hour? >> people love 4g service but there is turning out to be one

almost 5:09 on this tuesday morning. we're looking good today. once again sunshine and comfortable temperatures. your day planner, you need the jackets early. we have 30s and 40s. we're looking at readings by lunch time in the upper 40s. this afternoon highs near 55 with the drive home temp of 52. i'll be back in five minutes talking about wintry weather for wednesday. right now over to monika with time saver traffic. right now the roads are clear on the southbound side of i-95 here at route 32 in maryland. looking good in from baltimore. no problems on the bw parkway or route 50 even coming in from annapolis. more on area roadways coming up once again in a couple of minutes. 5:18. here's some of the other stories making news now. more gruesome details about the deaths of two young boys in washington state. they were killed in a house fire sunday and authorities say their father josh powell had been planning to set fire to that home for some time. smoke inhalation was the primary cause of death for powell and his two sons but

investigators say the boys also suffered severe chopping to their heads and their necks. powell is also a perp of interest in the disappearance -- person of interest in the disappearance of his wife who disappeared in utah in 2009. school officials are replacing the entire faculty at miramonte elementary school in california. last week mark berndt was charged with committing lewd acts on nearly two dozen children. a second teacher was arrested under suspicious of fondling two girls. jair led loughner -- jared loughner will spent four more months being forcibly medicated in an effort to make him stand trial. coming up, we'll show you

>> will the snow be flying in d.c.? >> i think we'll see some snow flakes but road surfaces are warm. we were in the 50s yesterday. we're in the 50s today. >> it's not going to stick. >> no. i don't think it will be snowing that heavily to happen. here's your bus stop forecast on this tuesday morning. no problems. you'll need a jacket, especially in the suburbs. we have readings down to 30 away from town. even though it's 45 at reagan national, that's easily the warm spot. sunrise at 7:09. temps in the 30s and 40s this morning. your day planner, we'll be climbing to the upper 40s by 11:00. low 50s at 1:00 with the highs today 53, 55, somewhere in that range. north westerly winds 5, 10 miles an hour. so just a little bit of a breeze out there. and for 5:00 going to be outside, well, sunny and 52, cool, but definitely comfortable and even golfable especially when you consider it's february and we're talking 50s. nice again today. light snow and some rain

tomorrow. i think southern maryland down towards fredricksburg, charles, calvert, st. mary's counties you're likely to see rain. d.c. points north and west better chance you'll see the light snow for the afternoon and evening hours. i think the roads will be mostly wet. as i said a moment ago, road surfaces are warm and air temperatures will still be in the mid- to upper 30s if not around 40, especially south so a trace to an inch on grassy areas. i suppose some of those favorite areas north and west of town could get an inch and a half, maybe slightly more than that but we're not expecting a lot from this by any measure. 45 right now in washington. 43 southern maryland. easton is 37. it's 37 also in tappahannock. fredricksburg 41. upper 30s for the shenandoah valley. we've got some big rains -- big ranges in the temperatures depending on how quickly the clouds clear out overnight. good visibility. the capitol dome still shining brightly this morning with 45 degrees, feeling like 39 thanks to agent bit of a breeze north, northwest at 13 at reagan

national. see this guy right here coming across? you'll notice a few specks of green. we did have a few showers across southern maryland and the delmarva. that is gone. our next weather system is actually off the map in the central plains bringing some rain and some snow to places like nebraska and colorado. for us sunshine today. here we are by noon. a nice midday. going to be outside this afternoon, other than a little jacket weather is going to cooperate with you big time. tonight clear. overnight here come the clouds for tomorrow morning. might see a few flurries in some of our ridgetops to the west in western maryland and west virginia. during the morning hours some of the snow will increase from west to east. by noon we could be seeing a few snow flakes around here. notice the green to the south in charles county and calvert county as we go through the afternoon and evening hours. rain southern maryland toward fredricksburg but snow north and west. generally light snow. i think road surfaces are going to be okay. 7:00 we still have some snow

flying north and now after dark, this is one if we get any bit of stickage on the roads, that's when that would occur, although this will start to clear out after the 10:00 hour so that by thursday morning, we're back in the sunshine and looking pretty good as temperatures will climb well up in the 40s on thursday. how much snow we're looking at again? mainly grassy surfaces. about halfage inch or so -- half an inch or so here. inch and a half up north. it's not out of the question but we'll be watching t. it's not going to be a storm to stop things i don't think too badly but around here who knows. a couple of wet flakes and people freak out. tomorrow near 40 with the afternoon snow and rain south. again a light event. no need to rush out to the stores. by thursday 47 degrees. as we look toward the weekend, saturday gets colder, 40 and

really kind of chilly sunday and monday with highs in the 30s. it's 5:17. a good weather day ahead. monika, keep that good weather or that good news going. i am going to try to do that. on the roads we do have good news. there are no problems to report. a little bit of late clearing construction on the southbound side of 270 at old georgetown road but at 5:18 in the morning volumes are light enough that it's really not causing any problems. we'll take you outside live. if you're planning to head over to the south side of town at the beltway, no problems to report here at route 4 as you head over to oxon hill and the wilson bridge. let's take a look at a map of southern maryland. route 4, route 5, 301 everything is doing fine out of brandywine, oxon hill. andrews air force base you're doing fine through the main corridor in southern maryland. if you're planning to head over to the other side of town, we'll take a live look over here in the heart of silver spring. georgia avenue and wayne avenue. we're doing fine as well. nice and light in this corridor. coming up in my next report,

we'll go to virginia at 5:32. back to you. >> thank you, monika. it's been almost a week since a controversy erupted over the susan g. komen foundation defunding money for planned parenthood and reversing its decision. the controversy did help focus the spotlight on some other facilities that breast health services to other women in the area like the capitol breast care center in southeast d.c. >> reporter: when margie first came to the capital breast care center for a mammogram, she was like millions of americans in this tough economy. out of a job that had provided her with health benefits. >> i didn't have insurance at the time. i was able to come and get great care and i've been coming back every year since then. >> reporter: caring for metro area women like margie who are understand insured or have no insurance at all has been the mission of the center. the major barriers include

access to care and follow-up treatment. the director says the centers offers ma'am games, clinical and cervical exams, health education, even transportation to and from appointments. >> we screen 2000 women each year. approximately about 1% of those women that we screen will come up positive for cancer. and we navigate probably about 400 of those women for diagnostic care and follow-up. >> reporter: they have desparate matically -- they have dramatically increased their screening rates. patients will have a patient navigator by their side. >> we have a wide reach but there's still a pretty significant population of women that don't know that we exist. >> reporter: all women are welcome at the center, even those who can afford to pay. remember margie? she's now employed with health benefits and paying it forward. she's volunteering at the center and her insurance payments help subsidize mammograms for women who are in need. >> the capitol breast care center is a community

good morning. welcome back to 9news now on this tuesday morning. i'm andrea roane. hope you're enjoying your coffee. i am. i'm mike hydeck. i need to enjoy some more coffee apparently because my speech is not working. >> you just need to more cups. that's all. >> by 6:00 a.m. that is. we're doing okay this morning. 45 at reagan national but there are a lot of areas where the skies are cleared out. temperatures have dropped into the lower 30s. keep your jackets handy this morning. this afternoon it's going to be sort of like yesterday. we'll have the low to mid-50s. not too shabby for this time of year. here's a look at the day planner with sunshine expected all day long. we're looking at 49 by noon. 53 at 3:00. northwesterly winds will be close to 10 miles an hour so just a bit of a breeze at times but all in all a pretty good day ahead.

want to show you satellite and radar. we have a little piece of energy come across overnight and some places like fredricksburg, down through parts of senior maryland you had a couple of raindrops over- - southern maryland, you had a couple of raindrops overnight. places like manassas and gaithersburg all the way down to 28. springfield is 40. arlington 42. going into the low to mid-50s with sunshine. 5:31, let's go to monika with time saver traffic. good morning esk. at 5:31 things are looking great on the roadways. no big issues to report. in fact, look at this. on 66, 66 miles an hour in centreville at lee highway. maybe want to just slow down a bit. you're traveling fine through that area all the way to vienna and the beltway. no problems on the beltway through annandale right now. we'll take a live look at inbound side of route 4 as you head for the beltway. no problems to report here and down toward oxon hill and into alexandria, virginia. we'll go back to the map, this time on the northbound side of

i-95 as you come up from dale city toward the occoquan river and beyond. you're going to be fine. this is what it looks like in springfield headed northbound from route 644. you're going to see that the volumes are building but no problems to report as you head for the beltway and a last live look at 395 in shirlington. again moving well to the 14th street bridge and into downtown. coming up in my next report, we'll go to maryland in a couple minutes. back to you. we continue to follow breaks news out of fort washington, maryland. a family of five was found unconshens -- unconscious. delia goncalves is outside the home with a story that is just very scary. >> reporter: it is absolutely scary. we can all be in this situation. we are hoping that this family can survive, but it was very touch and go for a short time this morning when firefighters arrived here. we now can tell you it was a faulty furnace that caused this

situation here inside the home spilling dangerous levels of carbon monoxide into the home. get this. more than 90 times higher than the limit firefighters say is deemed to be unhealthy. firefighters were called after doctors at children's hospital could not reach the family. you see, a young child had been transported there earlier in the night and doctors discovered that child had high levels of carbon monoxide in his blood. inside the home firefighters discovered five people, a mom, dad and three children, an infant to preteenage all unconscious. they were medevaced to the hyperbaric chamber at shock trauma center. always check your gas appliances. you should have a trained professional maintain your furnace and most importantly install a carbon monoxide detector in your home. carbon monoxide is a colorless,

odorless gas. it's called the silent killer. it can oftentimes cause dizziness, faintness, even some nausea and it can be a very dangerous situation. we don't know at this hour how long the family members were exposed to those 450 parts per million of carbon monoxide inside their home. we're told five parts per million is considered to be unhealthy. so you can imagine what kind of a dangerous situation was inside this home. here is some good news we can pass along. even though the family is in critical condition at baltimore shock trauma, we're told when paramedics treated them outside here on the scene, they were beginning to show some signs of improvement. so that is some good news but certainly still a touch and go situation for this family. coming up in a half-hour, we'll have more on a very breaking news situation here in fort washington. back to you. >> thank you, delia goncalves in fort washington, maryland. republican presidential candidates are hoping to get a boost from voters in minnesota,

missouri and colorado today. all three states will hold nominating contests, although no delegates up for grabs. polls show mitt romney ahead in colorado but rick santorum holds the lead in minnesota and even has a chance of beating romney in missouri where newt gingrich isn't on the ballot. the lawsuit over virginia's republican presidential primary ballot is over now. newt gingrich has asked the judge to drop his name from that suit. he was the last of the four plaintiffs to do so. gingrich, rick santorum, john huntsman and rick perry all had sued over the state's signature requirement to get on the ballot. this now means virginians will choose from mitt romney and ron paul in the republican primary march 6. other election news in virginia, the state senate passed a voter irchts d. bill. the -- incht d. bill. the 40 state senators were split along party lines. bill bolling cast the decisive vote to cast the bill which requires voters to bring an i.d. to the polls or cast only a provisional ballot if you don't

have one. the bill heads to the house of delegates which passed a similar version last week. time for another your money report. >> jessica is back. >> we're watching your money and watching your phone. people love the 4g service that's out there but there may be one major drawback. "the wall street journal" reports some smartphone users are discovering that speedy service also kills their phone's battery life. the main culprit here, the phones are constantly searching for a signal and that drains down the power. the journal reports complaints about battery life could slow the push by wireless carriers to convert customers to 4g. is the breakfast food on your table this morning? great for you? that could be hard to figure out. wal-mart wants to do some of the legwork. it's adding a new green icon that reads great for you on packages on some of its house brand foods. it's part of a multi-year campaign to profight obesity --

to fight obesity. verizon says it will start a video streaming service later this year in cooperation with red box and its dvd rental kiosks. verizon and the company that owns red box will launch the service nationwide. in addition to competing with netflix, the move also apparently sets up potential competition with verizon's own service fios. so i guess if you're going to be in competition with somebody, you might as well be in competition with yourself. >> if you need to shut it down, you own it so you can do that, too. doctors are offering a new way to tackle the growing problem of type ii diabetes. >> we'll also introduce you to some local heroes who are helping a number of people in need. we're back in two minutes with your weather first.

and calcium supplements. new guidelines for treating type ii diabetes. a drug reduces body weight and improves cholesterol. health experts say metd indication should only be -- medication should only be used when lifestyle changes such as exercise doesn't work. giving babies finger foods might be the best way to wean them from a body. kids allow to feed themselves with finger foods instead of being spoon fed are likely to eat healthier and be slimmer as they get older. kids who fed themselves like carbohydrates the best. spoon fed kids favored sweet foods. here's a look at celebrities celebrating a birthday. actor james spaner is 52. garth brooks is 50. chris rock turned 47 today. steve nash is 38. and he has been in the tabloids quite a bit.

lots of sunshine today. by noon we're in the upper 40s. by 5:00 low 50s. after we top out somewhere low to mid-50s for highs. you'll notice the winds all day northwest. we're in the 5 to 10 range. fairly pleasant for this time of year. look at the chill. 28 culpeper, manassas and gaithersburg. some upper 30s for parts of the shenandoah valley. southern maryland 43. got a 32 from charlie in catlett by the way in fauquier county. easton is at 36 this morning. outside in washington we've got generally clear skies and the windchills, they're not that bad either. mid-20s to upper 30s. so not a lot of wind. looking outside on our michael & son weather camera, good visibility. no concerns under partly cloudy skies. a little bit after breeze out of the north, north west at 13 so the wind chill at least in town is 39. you saw some of those other windchill as moment ago which were in the 20s. this is would we're watching.

by the way, look at the rain which has come on shore on the west coast with this big system. so a wet day across much of california. middle of the country lighter snows in colorado pulling in toward the central plains here. this system is going to be moving east. in fact, we're going to see it arrive here by midday tomorrow with clouds and a threat for the wintry weather. today, though, it's all quiet. a little system overnight put some showers down well to our south. that is leaving quickly stage right. today sunshine. here we are at noon. good looking lunch hour out there. this afternoon we're looking fine as well. we'll watch the clouds increase out west this evening and then work their way toward us by tomorrow morning. so tomorrow generally a cloudy day with some snow developing by midday. here we are at noon. north and west all of this that you see is blue, that is snow. the pink is the mix and the green is the rain which we'll keep down in southern maryland for the most part, maybe southern prince george's county down south through the avenue. d.c. kind of on the line. north and west some snow. but this is going to be light. so i'm thinking the roads will

be wet. generally any accumulations on grassy surfaces. here we are in the evening hours with a little snow. if we get any builtup on road surfaces, it will be after dark. we've only looking at an inch, inch and a half north and west. by thursday this stuff is out of here. in town if we get a dusting, that would be as much as we can max out from this system. 55 today. tonight we're in the 30s. tomorrow near 40 with the afternoon and evening snow and rain south. thursday we start in the 30s but we're back to 47 so no problems on thursday other than maybe an early slick spot. by friday 39. sunday and monday really chilly with highs staying in the 30s. right now 5:48. monika samtani, you're still smiling although it doesn't look like it's as big a smile as earlier. that's only because you have the delays to deal w. you can't really smile about that although you're used to t you hate sitting in it, right? we'll show what you it looks like inside the beltway on 66

today at carpenter's shelter in alexandria, major improvements have been made to the facility. >> we've added a lot of storage so we can take in donations in our pantries, store the maps -- mats where we do our winter shelter and have space for office supplies. it's made a huge difference. >> this space was not available. it was not here before the renovation. >> reporter: when homeaid northern virginia steps in, some renovations are small. some are major. but they all impact people's lives and aid them in rebuilding their future. >> people say oh, you're going to the homeless shelter. you already have one idea in your mind but coming in, they were very helpful and friendly. the place is clean. surprisingly, you know, they made us feel very comfortable, even though we're in a horrible situation, they don't make us feel like we're in that situation.

it is 5:55. we have a big spread on temperatures right now because we had some clouds overnight. they cleared in the last few hours. it really made a difference on the temperatures in places like culpeper. culpeper is not 37. they fell down to 28. same with manassas but in town we're 45 at reagan national. big differences. as we head toward 9:00 everybody will see sunshine. still upper 30s north to low 40s in town. lunch time going to be outside, exercising and taking a walk or just a walk and a lunch, well, 49. much more comfortable by then. even a in manassas. 46 for martinsburg. in the middle of the afternoon, no problems. school is letting out, got sunshine. low, even middle 50s. take will be our highs for the day. look for a high around 55. tonight by 6:00 still clear and temperatures in the 40s. tomorrow we have light wet snow moving in. don't freak out about t. it's

going to -- about it. it's going to be wet roads. maybe a buildup on grassy surfaces. i'll have more coming up on 9news now at 6:00 a.m. right now back to mike. thank you. here there and everywhere, that's pretty much where you're going to see stink bugs this spring and summer. they're already at my house. i don't know why they're early but they are. these mild temperatures we're having, most of us are loving the 50s and 60sence september for the -- 60s except for the skiers. the trouble is the stink bugs love it too. all the wet rain last fall wiped a lot of them out but the warm winter is outdoing that. it's too noisy around the boardwalk according to some people. a new measure would ensure that sounds are directed away from the beaches and boardwalk. initially you could get a ticket or fine for violating the law. you could get arrested if you're a repeat offender.
