6:01 am
the beltway through cheverly looking great. into the northeast corridor. we'll take a live look at route 50 as you come in from i-97. in annapolis no problems to report. if you're planning to use public transportation, metro marks -- metro, marc, vre everything running on time. coming up in three minutes, i will be talking to the metro g.m. so stay tuned for that. 6:01. we're following breaking news this morning. a family overcome by carbon monoxide gas, the mother, father, and three children are all in critical condition right now. >> they're being treated in a hype baric claim -- hyperbaric chamber in baltimore. the family lives along bernard drive just off allentown road. delia goncalves is there to tell us more about what happened. >> reporter: andrea, we're life in the 8300 block of bernard drive. it's been a long night for a lot of these homeowners here. you can imagine with firefighters and emts streaming through the area to try to
6:02 am
rescue the family trapped inside with these dangerous lefts of carbon monoxide. take a look at the house at this hour. you can see most of the lights are actually o. that's because when firefighters were here, they went through the whole house to ventilate the house. the carbon monoxide level, get this, 90 times higher than the unhealthy limit. it all started when doctors if children's hospital called firefighters because they could not reach the family. you see, a young child from the house was taken to the hospital and doctor there is discovered high lefts of are carbon monoxide in that child's blood. when firefighters arrived, they pulled the mom, dad, three children, the youngest an infant all out of the house, all of them were unconscious. they were flown to baltimore shock trauma. they are now being treated in the hyperbaric chamber there. crews later discovered a faulty gas furnace was to blame for leaking those dangerous levels of carbon monoxide into the home. how dangerous? get this.
6:03 am
it is shocking. 450 parts per million. what does that all mean? firefighters say five parts per million is considered unhealthy so you can imagine, 450, 90 times higher than firefighters themselves, the experts say is an unhealthy limit to have inside your home. this could have been a very dangerous, deadly situation for this family. fortunately they were able to get out. coming up new in a half-hour, we'll let you know what you can do to prevent a tragedy like this from happening inside your home. back to you. >> delia goncalves live on this breaking news in fort washington, maryland this morning. prince george's county police are also busy with two murders. the body was found -- they were found less than a mile apart in new carolton. overnight they discovered a man dead near annapolis road near the plaza 30 shopping center. then just a short time later they found another man dead just west of there on 78th avenue at garrison road.
6:04 am
right now police are not sure if the two murders are linked. this morning a special extra mile report. we're focusing on metro and the bad rap it's gotten lately. almost daily we hear of problems involving the aging infrastructure, delays and bad communication. metro's general manager joins now to set the record straight. thank you so much for being with us this morning. >> it's a pleasure being here. >> you've been in this position for just about a year but you've inherited a lot of problems with metro. instead of me asking the questions, i'm going to go straight to the riders and see what their concerns are and the most popular one was definitely the escalators. >> the worst thing very dealt with was walking up the steps. that's very hard. it's like 290 steps at 19th street and it's really hard. >> that was overwhelmingly the biggest concern when i went out yesterday. that was at dupont circle. why does it take so long to fix the escalators? >> there's a whole history to them. first they weren't maintained
6:05 am
than they should be. so they're in a lot worse shape so it takes longer to fix them. also, this is a huge amount and considering we have 588 escalators on the system. so in time like at dupont circle we're replacing escalators, you'll see better performance. we're also doing a lot better job at preventive maintenance and have seen a rebound in the escalators that are available. >> you think it's preventive maintenance wasn't done before and that's why there's such a huge problem now? >> yes. we had great strlds but we weren't -- standards but we weren't living up to them. we should see better performance in the future. >> i'm going to go to the next two riders. they have valid concerns about the fare hike and service. >> if you want to raise the fare, i mean, give us a little better service. >> mr. general manager, can you please provide more trains. >> his point was there's too
6:06 am
many delays and a lack of communication in the stations once you're down there to even find out about the delay. >> let's talk about some of the things we're going to see this year. we're going to get more rush hour service. rush plus goes in effect in july which is more rush hour service on most of our rail lines. that's a good thing. we're buying new buss to replace the oldest buses -- buses to replace the oldest buses in the fleet. those are some of the things people will be seeing. we're starting the manufacture of new rail cars this year so that in a couple of years we'll see one quarter of our refleet replaced with new cars so you'll see improvements as a result of what we're doing. >> the rush plus service and also will using fare cards be easier. >> we've already made it so that if you have a smartcard, you can now download value on to it without having to go to a machine. these are all incremental improvements but the main thing is rebuilding the system. there were years of not doing the maintenance, not doing the
6:07 am
reconstruction that was necessary, so really there's a lot more pain and i ride the system six days a week like most riders do and i experience the same thing but we have to do this in order to get the system back where it should be. >> these two riders want you to comment on what's been in the news lately. >> there have been a lot of safety issues on the trains. the tracks recently have been cracking. we haven't even had a cold winter. >> where is all the money going? for all the days where they've had huge ridership over the last few years, they've made tons of money. i think someone is either embezzling or totally mismanaging that money. where is it going? >> just a few seconds to go. your comments. >> track work is an important thing. we haven't done in the past enough necessary maintenance. we have 75,000 tires that should have been replaced. we're stepping it up to 18, 20,000 ties a year. we have to get back in shape. when we do all this, you'll see a lot less of these problems.
6:08 am
it will take years. >> hopefully there have been internal controls in place. >> yes, we're looking at the whole system. >> over ten billion trips a year taking in the u.s. transportation system, we don't want all those people on the roads. that means we need to take care of the system. thank so you much and keep us posted of your progress over the course of the year. >> thank you g. to be here. opening statements could start later today in the murder trial of george huguely. the former uva lacrosse player is from maryland. he pleaded not guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend yeardley love. huguely is accused of inflicting fatal injuries during a fight. the court is whittling down a pool of 160 candidates to a 12- person jury plus alternates. the d.c. attorney general, the inspector general and the u.s. attorney's office are all investigating the latest corruption in city government. 130 city workers accused of collecting $840,000 in

6:33 am
children who were all inside the home were unconscious. they were flown to a hyperbare rick chamber for treatment at baltimore shock trauma center. they later discovered a faulty furnace was to blame. the levels of carbon monoxide in the home 90 times higher than the dangerous limit. get this. 450 parts per million, five parts per million is considered unhealthy. now, to avoid this, experiments suggest that you get your appliances checked pretty regularly, you get your furnace inspected by a trained professional and beside as smoke detector, everyone should infall a carbon monoxide detector. it is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause nausea, vomiting and in extreme cases can even kill you. police a call this the silent killer. we don't know how long this family was exposed but thankly
6:34 am
they got out of the house. even though they're in critical condition at this early hour, when paramedics pulled the family members out of that home that was just saturated with this carbon monoxide, as soon as the family members came out into the fresh air, they started getting treatment. they were showing some signs of improvement so that is hopeful news but still a touch and go situation for this family. hopefully everyone can take this lesson and install detectors inside their home to prevent a tragedy like this from happening to them. back to you. >> good advice, delia. of course in fairfax county and the district, you can get carbon monoxide detectors free from the fire department. they cost about $15, $20. police now have an arrest warrant for the man they call the mastermind of the kidnapping, robbery and murder of an alexandria, virginia activist lenny harris. he's 26-year-old tyrone lewis. he's already jailed in alexandria on an unrelated charge. investigators say lewis is the man filmed using harris' credit

6:38 am
to a settlement involving foreclosures. there are five banks involved. bank of america, jpmorgan chase, wells fargo, city group and allied financial. as part of the decide, they would reduce loans for about one million households and hundreds of thousands of people who lost their homes to foreclosure would get checks for about a thousand dollars. if you're one of those families trying to escape a big mortgage, jessica doyle has some great advice for you. >> maybe you would think it would be great to get out from that big mortgage but still some concerns are holding you back. but downsizing in a down housing market may be easier and more profitable than you think. homeowners looking to unlock some cash by selling that big house they no longer need may be making it harder than it realize is -- than it really is. >> the idea that if i wait the market will go up and maybe i'll see those prices i saw three, four years ago will be back and i'll make a lot more money, i don't think that's
6:39 am
realistic. >> reporter: putting the emotional factors about downsizing on the shelf, there's a real case to be made and money to be made, too, from downsizing from a specific type of property. the buyers are out there right now for single family homes. >> your kids are grown. you're downsizing. you can move to a neighborhood where you don't really care about the schools anymore. so chances are you will be able to get a home for much less money. so you're getting the best of both world also. >> reporter: some single family homes with good neighboring schools are now seeing multiple offers in the washington area. >> if you're in that area where prices are still very stable and the market is very strong, you'll probably sell quite easily. >> reporter: in the ideal scenario, the downsizing seller can now look at some harder hit properties. >> maybe a condo or a small rambler a neighborhood hit pretty hard, could be a good opportunity to get a house for
6:40 am
