show a lot of the potential jurors have already made up their minds that george hugley, v is guilty of the brutal murder of yardley love. hugly was let in, the former la crosse player, lumbered into the courtroom. sheriff's deputies have strapped heavy weights around his ankles to slow him down if he tries to escape. hugly's family sits right behind him on one side of the courtroom, but he doesn't even seem to look at his parents. victim yardley love's family sits on the other side of the courtroom, many of them wearing pink scarves or pink coats. one potential juror turned up wearing a pink scarf too. the judge dismissed her. another juror was almost in tear as she talked about her own daughter who is almost the same age as yardley love. she says she really felt connected to the victim. she was dismissed as well. the judge has dismissed 10 of

the 15 potential jurors object on the morning panel, but things seem to be picking up. the judge is hoping to seat a jury by the end of today. j.c. >> thank you very much, bruce lashan. we'll hear from him this afternoon. a high-ranking official at the komen for the cure breast cancer charity has resigned over the organization's funding controversy. the vice president for public policy karen handle said in a letter to komen officials she supported the move to cut off funding for planned parenthood. handle said the idea came up before she took her position with komen. and handle says that komen's strategy, rational and her involvement have been grossly mischaracterized. sources tell the associated press that handle was a driving force behind excluding planned parenthood from komen grants. handle, a republican criticized

current georgia governor nathan deal as being soft on abortion while running against him in the 2010 gop primary. a family from fort washington, maryland is lucky to be alive right now. rescuers removed two adults and three children, all of them unconscious overnight from a home on bernard drive. doctors at children's national medical were treating a fourth child. and when the child's blood showed high carbon monoxide levels, doctors could not get anyone at the home to answer the phone. firefighters removed the family and they were flown to the hyperbaric chamber at a baltimore hospital. later this morning a relative outside the home told our crew only the mother is still in serious condition. it appears that a faulty furnace was leaking carbon monoxide. prince george's county police are also busy with two murders. the bodies were found less than

a mile apart in new carrollton, maryland. overnight they found a man dead on 85th avenue near annapolis road. that's near the plaza 30 shopping center. and then just a short time later they found another man dead just west on 78th avenue at garrison road. police are not sure yet if the two murders are linked, but in the last hour we've learned that one of the victims is 16 years old. every 50 minutes someone will die because of a drunk driver. that's according to the national highway traffic safety administration. our andrea mccarren met one young man who almost became a statistic. dylan lewis admits that he was driving drunk. andrea spoke with dylan in a maryland trauma center for this "9 wants you to know" report. >> i just remember waking up outside of my truck when the

ground was shaking, bleeding, and thinking that was it, and i wasn't okay with that. >> do you have any vital signs? >> yeah. [ sirens ] reporter: we met dylan lewis at the lowest moment of his life. i wanted to fight, i wanted to live and i wanted to stay here, and i did that. >> driving drunk on a cold january night, dylan lost control of his truck, hit a telephone pole and flipped over. >> for some people they don't get this lucky, they don't get this second chance, they don't get to wake up after their drunken car accident. reporter: we met the 21-year- old at university of maryland's shock -- in shock trauma hours after he was brought in by ambulance, minutes before he went into surgery. >> i don't ever want to touch alcohol again. i want to take the responsibilities of a 21-year- old and i need to get my act together. >> i got a call from shock

trauma about 6:00 in the morning, telling me where he was. every mother can probably imagine how i felt. reporter: dylan told us the toughest part of this ordeal was facing his mother. >> first thing he did was apologize. i'm so happy that he was alive. >> i'm thinking that was it. reporter: we showed her the interview dylan did with us from his hospital bed. >> we agreed there would be no alcohol in this house ever again. >> drinking alcohol isn't for me. i'd remember spend my time looking for things that i can enjoy doing sober. >> somebody not too much older than you all who decided to drink and drive and he nearly lost his hand. >> dylan's raw honesty already appears to be impacting young lives. we met him just by chance while visit town hall meeting trauma center with a group of juvenile offenders, teenagers, getting a gliches of the real-life kons gsh glimpse of the real-life consequences of his destructive behavior. >> blood all he over my

clothes. >> let this be a wakeup call because i never want to see you guys here as a patient. >> i hope those kids really learn that they have families and they have lives, and if they have dreams, drinking is going to take it all away from them. that's all i wanted to say. reporter: andrea mccarren, 9 news now. >> coming close to death has really changed dylan's life. he now wants to go to college and become a social worker or maybe a counselor. he wants to help troubled kids get off the path that he was on. metro's general manager responded to questions from transit passengers this morning on 9 news now. richard sorerel says station escalators were not maintained according to system standards and he also told monica santani that upcoming rate hikes will lead to better service and equipment. >> rush plus goes into effect in july which is more rush hour service on most of our rail lines. that's a good thing.

[ booing ] >> romney is focusing most of his attacks on president obama. the president's campaign is returning $200,000 in contributions from a mexican casino owner who is now facing drug charges. the lawsuit by four republican presidential candidates to get on the ballot in virginia is over. a judge approved newt gingrich's request to be dropped from the case. he was the last plaintiff left. only mitt romney and ron paul will be on the virginia primary ballots next month. d.c. mayor vincent gray is expected to deliver his yearly state of the district address.

the mayor will talk about his priorities for the city tonight at the sixth and i historic synagogue in northwest washington. his speech will start just after 7:00 p.m. a massive investigation is under way into the latest city government corruption allegations. 130 people stand accused of collecting $840,000 in unemployment while they were actually working for the city. the department of employment services says the 90 suspects still employed by the city are now on administrative leave with pay. and the employment services director tells bruce johnson these people knew what they were doing. >> they have to certify to those benefits every week, so if you know that you are -- you know, that you're getting a pay check from the d.c. government every week, you have to certify that you don't have any other income. >> the city uncovered this scam during an internal review. his name is ernest evans,

tubman were on hand this morning. tubman was born on maryland's eastern shore. after escaping slavery in 1849, she led hundreds of slaves to freedom on the underground railroad. her statue joins a collection of presidents and historical figures. more than 40 states have agreed to a settlement involving foreclosures. there are five banks involved, bank of america, jp morgan, chase, wells fargo, citigroup and allied financial. as part of the deal they would reduce loans for about 1 million households and hundreds of thousands of people who lost their homes to foreclosure would now get checks for about $1,000. lincoln park in falls church is closed for a major remodeling project. crews are preparing to install a rain garden. the first phase includes removing five white pine trees. and once installed, the rain gardens will absorb storm water and that should ease flooding

problems and improve water quality. >> a lot of rain gardens going up across the region. good stuff. >> very good thing. >> very good thing. it's so nice outside. >> it really is. >> sat out on the weather terrace and enjoyed it. bright sunshine and low wind temps in the 50s. i'll tell you now, a little bit of wintery weather headed this way as we head into tomorrow, especially in the afternoon and evening. so the day planner for you this tuesday afternoon, lots of sunshine, temperatures going into the mid-50s. you know, some of the car thermometers read 58, 59, yeah, that wouldn't surprise me at all. northwesterly winds become northerly later on and they could gust 15 to 20 briefly for a few more hours before diminishing somewhat tonight and we'll see temperatures drop into the 40s with clear skies early. the clouds will roll in after midnight. right now we're 50 in winchester, leesburg and fredrick. still 48 in gaithersburg, culpepper 55 and on the eastern shore 50 and a few folks down in pax river, there's a 51 back here. it is a very nice day.

look outside, our michael and son weather camera, bright sunshine out there, not a cloud to be found, although somehow they did find it when they reported on the air. it is just about clear out there. north/northwesterly winds at 10, the dewpoint only 29, so a nice, dry day. we do have a system coming tomorrow that's going to bring some light snow and rain. that rain is generally going to be south and southeast of d.c. north and west of town light snow and some of that could be breaking out even by mid morning, places like winchester, hagerstown, up toward fredrick. roads, though, will be mostly wet. that means warm today, relatively speaking. tomorrows temps will be upper 30s to near 40. late in the day between 4:00 and 9:00 when the snow is coming down, the sun angle goes down lower, that's when we could have issues with slick spots. snow totals a trace to as much as two inches mainly on grassy areas. but some sidewalks and driveways, some back roads and we head into the evening hours get a little accumulation on them, don't be surprised, just

take it easy. this is the storm tomorrow, it's already in the central plains. you see some snow with it, that's the blue. the rain is green across kansas. we've got some freezing drizzle in areas of nebraska and south dakota. we won't have that problem, but we will have wintery weather which is so hard to believe because it's so darned nice out there right now. we put the futurecast in motion. just want to show you we're clear for the afternoon. clouds thicken up toward tomorrow morning. going to stop the clock several times. 9:00 a.m. you'll notice in fredrick, out in cumberland, winchester some light snow developing. as we head to the middle of the day, north and west of d.c. some light snow, but temps should be above freezing, mid- to upper 30s then, so we'll have wet roads for the most part. as we get into the late afternoon, we've got some rain breaking out south and southeast. they'll be generally warm enough south of town to stay mainly rain in southern maryland. with the snow here at 7:00, now we could have a couple of slick spots here and there. the snow still around at 9:45 and pulling away overnight and we'll get back to sunshine and 40s as early as thursday.
