leesburg, gaithersburg, winchester, and by tomorrow evening, we could see some light snow around the district. a little mix to the south and also south and west of town. we're talking about mainly rainy conditions. not a whole lot for accumulations, but it is the timing of this event impacting the evening commute. temperatures are in the 50s here in downtown. we'll talk more about that snow and let you know how much you can expect for where you live coming up later. >> there is outrage tonight over news that some d.c. government workers got thousands of dollars in illegal unemployment checks while they were still on the job. bruce johnson has been digging into the story and learns that some of the people ripping off the system were working at the highest levels of government. >> outrage and disappointment on the streets of anacostia. >> so many things that the city needs. >> unemployment could be as

high as 50%. account for the people who stopped looking for work. news that 130 current and former d.c. workers have been caught collecting unemployment checks while on the job is not sitting well. >> it seemed like everyone in government -- that's why programs, they have programs it help people get jobs. >> that cost tax pairs $840,000. sources say, 45 workers in the public school system collected illegal checks, many of them classroom teachers. three staffers to former d.c. councilman, harry thomas jr., collected unemployment checks while still on the job. after thomas resigned in disgrace for stealing thousands of dollars, two of the staffers were fired. a third was hired by council chairman, kwame brown, who said the worker has been placed on leave. the cases go back to 2009 and get this, in many instances, people were adding 15,000,

18,000, $20,000 to the incomes they were getting from the city government. >> and i want to know what is the plan to recover our money. >> works for the d.c. government, she wants her workers who ripped off the system to be held accountable. >> and i don't doubt that there is more going on. >> the alleged corruption goes to the top. it was in september of last year that 9news now first reported that gabby frazier was fired for allegedly sering jobless benefits to her daughter and others. bruce johnson, 9news now. >> and 40 of the people under investigation left the city government. others have been placed on leave. a new year, a new session, the same gridlock. house and senate negotiators met to work out the details on extending that payroll tax cut for millions of people.

but they did not make any significant progress. the two sides have three weeks to reach an agreement before that benefit runs out. the campaign trail takes the candidates to three states today. minnesota and colorado both hold their caucuses tonight at 7:00 p.m. local time. missouri holds a primary, but there are no delegates at stake there. that state delegates will be awarded march 17, which missouri holds its caucus. >> mitt romney and ron paul are going to be the only republicans. a federal judge removed newt gingrich's name from the case challenging the commonwealth ballot access law, which effectively kills the lawsuit. it had initially been filed by gingrich, rick perry, and john huntsman. the new york city vendor credited with preventing a car bombing in times square is turning his attention to politics. dwayne jackson says his brush with terrorism back in may of

2010 taught him it makes sense to get involved. now, he is seeking the democratic nomination to represent his home district in congress. well tonight, prince georges county police want to know if two officers made up their side of the story after a shooting. >> i'm scott broom in brentwood, where the surveillance video does not line up with the report the officers gave after the incident friday night. the lowest price gas station and convenience store. on rhode island avenue at brentwood. an officer fired a shot with two suspected robbers, including 19-year-old ryan keith dorm, a convicted felon who was arrested that night and accused of trying to grab an officer's gun. no one was hit by the shot that was fired, but the confrontation was caught on surveillance video, which apparently tells a very different story. >> we have given that video. we presented that to the state's attorney office and they are reviewing it.

i don't want to affect, that is a criminal information. i don't want to affect that at this time. >> one of the two officers involved has been named. corporal donald taylor, a 13 year veteran, who was assigned to a robbery suppression task force on the lookout for trouble. while the investigation against the police officers unfold, the prince georges county state's attorneys office has dropped charges against the robbery suspect. in brentwood, 9news now. >> in the span of one hour, two people were found shot to death blocks apart in prince georges county. tonight, police are investigating whether the two murders are connected. police say 16-year-old christopher donald smith was found dead about 10:45 last night in new carolton. then the ambulance crew handling the smith case spotted another victim less than a mile away. he is 23-year-old edward thompson jr. police believe he was gunned down while riding a bicycle. >> a brutal murder or an accident? nearly two years after yeardley love's death, now looks like we

will hear the opening arguments tomorrow at the trial. bruce leshan is live in charlottesville where lawyers have been struggling to find a pool of jurors that can presume george huguely innocent until proven guilty. bruce. >> reporter: derek, the judge actually here now seems to have a pool of about 30 potential jurors who have actually, many of them, said that they are at least open to the defense explanation here. that george huguely may have beaten yeardley love. but that she died from a fatal combination of aderol and alcohol. deliver pizza to pay the bills after hanging out in the jury room, he is now more convinced that huguely is quality. >> do you think you could have been an unbias juror? >> for the initial questionnaire, i had not. but between then and now, i think i would have gotten

back now with a commuter alert. crews started delivering power substations for the dulles rail project today to a site off the road. around winchester at 9:00 this morning. then chattums. more things are expected to be delivered tomorrow. they'll be ready for some more delays. a trip to the white house. it usually means you have done something spectacular. you won the world series or the super bowl. >> president obama says when kids do something spectacular, they should be honored as well. and 100 students from 45 states were in fact honored in the east room today as part of the second annual white house science fair. all of them are winners of major science competitions across the country. jack dudly and sidney from leesburg were part of the team representing virginia.

that nant breast cancer association. she was widely reported as being the driving force behind the charity's decision to stop grants. it has been a week since all this news broke of komen's decision to -- the controversy did help focus the spotlight on other places that offer breast health services to women in the metro area regardless of your ability to pay. andrea roane introduces us to the capital breast cancer center in southwest d.c. >> when margie first came to the capital breast care center for a mammogram, she was like millions of americans in this tough economy, out of a job that provided her with health benefits. >> i was able to come and get great care and i have been

coming back every year since then. >> caring for metro area women who are under insured or no insurance at all has been the mission since it opened in 2004. the major barriers to preventative healthcare services include adequate followup treatment. beth beck says the center offers mammograms, clinical and cervical exams, health education, even transportation to and from appointments. >> we screen 2,000 women each year. 1% of those women we screen will come out positive for cancer and we navigate 400 of those women for diagnostic care and followup. >> dramatically increased screening rates and they are detecting cancers at twice the national average. patients sent to other locations for additional care will have a patient navigator by their side. >> we have a wide reach. there's a significant population of women that don't know that we exist. >> all women are welcome at the center, even those who can

afford to pay. remember margie? she is now employed with health benefits and paying it forward. she's a volunteer at the center and her insurance payments help subsidize mammograms for women who are in need. what a great idea. andrea says it's a community initiative between georgetown and the washington hospital center for breast health. a million dollar gift from the avon foundation helped launch the center and avon continues. this year, we have links on our website to donate or register for that walk. lesli. >> welcome home, sailor. it's been too long. tonight, more than 2500 sailors are returning home to family and friends after a deployment that is one for the record books. it's the uss baton. these men and women were deployed to europe and the middle east for 321 days. that is the longest deployment since the uss midway was out

52 in fredericksburg. hagerstown around 44 and annapolis in the upper 40s at this hour. all right, so we got some changes on the way, a touch of winter heading this way. increasing clouds tonight. wednesday morning commute is going to be fine. now in the afternoon, some light snow and also some rain moving in. the critical time for the snow will be 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. just in time for that evening rush. all right, so here's your future cast. we start this tomorrow morning at 7:30. generally cloudy conditions throughout the entire area. far west of us in comperland, peters petersberg. we'll see light snow developing. by 6:00 tomorrow night, you see some snow, also purple here indicating the wintery mix and south and east of town, we're talking mainly a rain event for southern maryland, including pax river. the snow sticks around through the night hours tomorrow and moves out of here and see high

pressure build back in. accumulation wise, not a whole lot around the district. maybe a trace, maybe up to half an inch in gaithersburg and manassas. higher amounts, 2 inches potentially for hagerstown. culpeper maybe half an inch. ground is too warm for a lot of the snow to stick. so tonight, partly cloudy and chilly. becoming mostly cloudy. lows in the 30s. tomorrow morning, we're looking at mostly cloudy conditions and cold snow showers. don't forget your snack et and your boots for tomorrow. here's your seven-day outlet. we're going to warm up thursday and friday into the 50s. cold air mass coming in for saturday and sunday. the weekend is going to be cold. mid 30s. if you want to stay inside, read a book, watch a movie, it's a good weekend to do that. and then we'll see temperatures in the upper 40s by tuesday. i think the message here is you may have to deal with a longer commute tomorrow. maybe some slick spots as temperatures cool down. >> we'll be ready. >> thanks a lot, anny.
