here's a look at some of the snow totals we've seen so far. frostburg, maryland, getting around 1.2 inches. germantown, a little bit. hagerstown, half an inch. and winchester getting an inch and a half. so for tonight, expecting snow likely. around the beltway, the rain will start to change over to snow, just in time for that evening rush. a trace possible around the beltway. rain likely south and east of town. lows 25 to 32 degrees. we are looking at slick spots developing. we'll talk more about the snow coming up later. back to you. >> our team coverage of this evening's snowy commute continues in maryland. scott broom worked his way from the beltway into frederick county where we can see there's a lot of snow coming down behind you. >> reporter: well, i guess that's the go ahead news. we had to come an awful long way to find the amount of snow we found out here. there is an inch on the ground.

we're on the frederick county line into washington county. that's i-07 behind us right here and you can see despite the snowfalling from the sky, the roadway is wet and clear and commuters are moving this afternoon. >> i try to get everything done and get back home. >> it started early at frederick county and rattled a few nerves. >> my husband is working in d.c. today. i'd like to have him home sometime this evening. >> traffic has built steadily as the federal government announced unscheduled leave to begin getting workers home early. >> i wish i was a federal worker, too. i work retail. we are open for everything. >> this is no blizzard, but the highway administration in maryland is gun shy. issuing a statement recalling this rush hour storm last january 26. >> i've been here 40 minutes, haven't moved an inch. >> that left some commuters

stranded overnight in their cars because plows could not move through the rush hour gridlock. >> they are saying 2 to 4. i guess we'll see what happens. >> highway officials go home early and stay away from plows trying to clear. meanwhile, the snowplows lined up to prepare for the first snow to seriously threaten a weekday rush hour this season. plow drivers just happy to get some work after this wacky warm winter. >> we get plenty of it so we can make extra money. >> at the higher elevations, reminders that winter can be beautiful, as long as you don't have to drive. >> and you are back live now taking a look at interstate 70. we're right on the margin with the temperature. it's 33 degrees up here. a little warmer downhill in frederick and thankfully for the maryland officials who are really nervous about this today. this has not turned into a gridlock situation like that storm back on january 26.

traffic is moving, things are looking good out here for now. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> let's hope it stays that way. let's go to ken, he is live in leesburg with the latest on the conditions there and steve, i was going to say steve. it's actually ken. the snow is coming down there, too. >> it is coming down. you can see it, actually, is this is the first time i have seen that the snow comes down this thick. but look down at the ground. not a whole lot of it is sticking. these chunky snow flakes are falling, but it turns to water. it's sticking more, but again, back to the topic that scott was talking about and anny as well. the streets behind me. you can see over here the traffic is flowing right now. the concern is going to be later on and how long these streets will stay slick. you can see right now, not a whole lot of snow accumulation

on the roads. it's falling, but not sticking. back to you. >> okay. ken, thank you very much. and to get the latest weather and traffic conditions any time or file a storm report, log on to our website, wusa9.com. you'll find the link on our home page. anita. >> now to the uva lacrosse murder trial. the prosecution painted a horrible picture of yeardley love's final minutes today. nearly two years after police arrested george huguely of chevy chase in her murder. opening statements have now started. bruce leshan is live in charlottesville. this had to be really tough to listen to. bruce. >> it was really tough, anita. and one of the most disturbing things for me was this mental image of this young woman badly injured, lying alone in her bedroom unable to summon help and just dying there alone.

taking as long as two hours. >> commonwealth attorney had jurors spell bound as for the first time, he publicly detailed the case against huguely. the former star lacrosse player, much thinner now, listened with little obvious reaction. the prosecutor says huguely busted down yeardley love's bedroom door and attacked her, be therring her so badly she could not move. she spent at least two hours in that bed where she died alone. chapman says the injury that killed her was consistent with a hand on her throat and he said doesn't take much pressure on her artery to cause her heart to stop. then the prosecutor quote and e- mail huguely allegedly sent love two days before killing her. you said you would get back together with me if i stopped drinking. then you went and bleeped mike

burns. huguely admits some, but not all of it. there was no reason, nothing he did to her that would cause george to believe this would be the horrible result. and the defense attorney said just hours after love's death, the detective, did you hit her head into the wall? did you crack it? huguely, no, you guys said she had a black eye and a bump on the head. she's not dead. i didn't. i did not. i never did anything that could do that to her. huguely's lawyer says the college senior never intended to hurt her. involuntary manslaughter, he told the jurors, is the only verdict that requires your careful thought and deliberation. >> the defense actually says that the first time there was any hitting in this relationship was love attacking huguely. the defense says that she thought that he was seeing an old flame and they say that she

went to his apartment and this slight young woman attacked this 6-foot 2 lacrosse player hitting him over and over and over again with her purse. that's the way they tell the story. anita. >> so much emotional testimony and much more obviously to come. bruce leshan in charlottesville. thank you. >> 9 wants you to know that montgomery -- when it comes tornado age drinking. all this after 9news now started to do stories. the department of liquor control will distribute identification checking calendars to every license business in the county that sells alcohol. those calendars will make it easier for businesses to quickly determine the age of a purchaser. they will also include the regulatory tips, important licensing dates and training scheduled. county executive talked about the initiative on 9news now at noon. >> the end of the day, it

requires merchant who is diligent and committed. requires parents to make sure their kids understand the law and obey the law and requires the government to hold people accountable. if they don't, we certainly can take action in reference to their licenses. provide to under age people. >> in a statement announcing the id checking calendars, the montgomery county echoed our mission here at 9news now. we'll do all we can to prevent the sale of alcohol to youth under the age of 21. tonight, our andrea mccarren shows the harsh reality of troubled lives that began with early alcohol use. >> i'm trying to make myself feel better. that was my medication. >> on a cold december night at a montgomery county police station, we met jim shackled to a table. he had been picked up on his

fourth dui. >> yes, i could hurt somebody. >> he confessed some day he would probably kill someone. not with a gun or knife, but by getting behind the wheel loaded with alcohol. >> i might do the same thing. i don't want that. i know it's in me. it's in me. because i'm sick. >> the self-described worthless loser agreed to share his story because he doesn't want young people to make the same mistakes he has. >> i almost died three weeks ago. i drank a fifth of vodka and i was puking in my own puke and going down my esophagus. >> and worst of all, it was witnessed by his own son. >> my wife said, he's just drunk. my son said, mommy, he's really in bad shape. >> jim is 55 years old. though he looks significantly

older. he started drinking when he was 14. drinking, he said, for fun. >> how would you describe yourself now? >> pathetic. i find myself pathetic. look where i am. >> and he lost his job, his home, and his marriage is in shambles. hours earlier, another life ravaged by alcohol. we were riding in a montgomery county police cruiser in downtown silver spring. what began as an apparent hit- and-run escalated into a wild high speed chase. for more than five minutes, we followed the speeding driver as he barreled on to the beltway and then i-270. until word came over the police scanner that he had crashed after hitting another car and spinning out of control. >> transported to a hospital, we learned he was 42 years old

laptop. sounds great, right? there's a catch. that is that not everybody is eligible. >> travel 140,000 miles a year and i think anything that makes it go smoother would be great. >> this frequent flier would be the perfect candidate for tsa's new precheck program. he's a u.s. citizen and he is part of an airlines frequent flier program, but not help these women who were strip searched late last year. >> she says, you pull your pants down, please, and she pulls my underwear down. she says lower your pants. >> they are not eligible because they are not frequent fliers. but their horror stories helped spark today. >> tsa precheck is about more than just speeding up travel. it's part of a fundamental shift in how we approach aviation security. >> secretary janet announced the expansion to 28 of the nation's busiest airports.

including reagan, dulles, and bwi. the program is currently being tested at seven other airports. how does it work? you sign up for the program online before you fly. >> so when the person arrives, they will have in their boarding pass, embedded in the bar code they are part of the tsa precheck program. >> if they are deemed low risk, they will be sent to the presecurity line, a luxury, but not all passengers think it's a good idea. there it's sending a signal that we are loosening it down, so i don't know. i think i would rather keep @ it the way it is. >> this program will be up and running by the end of march, but dulles and bwi won't be getting it until the end of 2012. lesli, just remember, even if you are signed up for this program, it's no guarantee that you won't still be screened and get one of those body pat downs or have to go through a body

this includes washington, frederick, maryland, and jefferson county, where 1 to 2 inches possible. you see the blue north and west of us. we are seeing light snow. a little bit of mix coming in and also some rain north and -- actually south and east of town. let's zoom into the snow. gaithersburg, leesburg, you're all seeing snow. look around the d.c. area and the beltway, we're looking at light rain out toward annapolis and the bay. so what we're expecting is to die down. we did see snow in frostburg. 1.2 inches. germantown, .10. o now, snow is likely for the rest of tonight. a trace to 1 inch possible and lows getting down to mid 20s to lower 30s. this system is moving in on out

of here quickly. we should start to see some potentially clearing skies overnight. temperatures right now are in the 40s and 30s. temperatures 40s in annapolis. washington, d.c., 38 degrees, manassas also in the mid 30s. frederick, hagersdown, you're all at the freezing mark. here's a look at our outside story. looking at minor snowstorm, but the bad timing. snow and rain for the commute, mainly wet roads. snow on the grassy areas and cars and some slick spots are possible tomorrow because i think with temperatures being well below freezing into the mid 20s around the suburbs, we're talking about icy conditions around the bridges and overpass and those untreated surfaces. our future cast showing us the snow will go ahead and clear on out overnight and high pressure coming back into the region, which means lots of sunshine for thursday and into friday. and temperatures a little bit milder. here's a look at the snow potential. around d.c., nothing.

maybe a trace. gaithersburg, .3. leesburg, half an inch. winchester around .4. you can see not a big snow maker by any means. so, expecting snow and rain for south and east of town. tomorrow morning, mostly sunny. temperatures will start out in the 20s and 30s. tomorrow afternoon, you won't want your jacket and sunglasses. highs 44 to 48 degrees. so in oakland, temperatures there warming up to only 37 degrees, cumberland 43. winchester mid 40s. manassas mid 40s and the d.c. area around 46 degrees. here's a look at your seven-day forecast. the quick event thursday, friday more sunshine. low 50s. saturday and sunday, we're looking at much colder air coming in from canada. you look at saturday night, we're going to get into the teens. plans to be outside or go out, i definitely would say bring out your winter weather gear

police are looking for the people responsible for an incredible case of animal cruelty in anne arundel county. a badly injured pit bull was found in lincecum. shelter workers found a

veterinarian that was willing to provide care for this dog. this story has sparked some passioned comments on our facebook page. misty writes, our society has evolved. we don't need this type of entertainment anymore. this cruel mentality needs to be stomped out. what's wrong with people? and nikki hampton defends the breed. she says i'm so sick and tired of hearing stories like this. people think so badly on pits. as you can clearly see, it's not the breed, it's the people that make them this way. makes me sick. and james writes, they aught to use whoever did this as a bait dog. tell us what you think. >> there will be no fights in back tax. the proposal died this morning in a committee just one day after it won unanimous support from the prince georges county council. a bill that would impose a bag tax in maryland is still

pending. d.c. and montgomery county already had the 5-cent bag taxes. you can get a $250 fine from now on if you pass a stop school bus in frederick county, maryland. the county's board of commissioners voted unanimously to increase the fine. a police officer can ticket you, but you can also be ticketed if you're caught on school bus cameras. on a single day last year, a statewide survey found 7200 violations. coming up, a social worker's frantic call for help. police released the chilling 911 tape in the day josh powell blew up his home, killing himself and his two young sons. and the family rescued from carbon monoxide poisoning is recovering. the special treatment they are undergoing and new details about their rescue. stay with us.

winter weather continues to strike parts of our viewing area. anny hong has the latest on our snow from the weather terrace. ann. >> we are talking about snow still north and west of town, but around the beltway is still mostly rain with a little bit mixing in. here's a look at our live doppler 9,000hd to show where we have the snow around leesburg and gaithersburg and frederick and if you look just around the beltway, we have mainly rain. leesburg and reston now starting to see some snow. you're looking at a mix also before it does change over to snow. and looks like around the beltway and points south, we're

looking at mainly rain. a winter weather advisory in effect north of town and washington, frederick, and jefferson counties. here's a look at the roads. time saver traffic. >> you're going to need extra time if you're moving toward the capital beltway. mainly because of the warning from earlier. everybody is really taking it easy. taking a live look at 270 and middlebrook. most of the slow traffic starts at the beltway, moving toward the frederick county line. up beyond father hurlly. also let's take a look at the american legion bridge. damp roadways, but everybody left work early. solid stop and go. it's moving into virginia and moving in toward maryland on both the inner and outer loop. we're getting word of a lot of spinouts, but nothing serious at this point in time. one accident coming in. right near coca-cola drive. taking a look at 66 and 29 in centerville, once again, we

have the wet conditions. further north and west, where it's been snowing longer, we are seeing some accumulation, mainly on the side roads. that's the latest from the traffic center, lesli, anita, back to you. >> the family that was rescued from carbon monoxide poisoning and near death is receiving treatment at this hour in baltimore. >> that's where peggy fox talked to the doctor . she has more on the narrow rescue that saved them all. >> this is the hyperbaric oxygen chamber here at shock trauma center where two of the family members are still recovering tonight. this after they were pulled from their homes yesterday morning after narrowly escaping certain death. >> he was concerned because they wouldn't answer the door and he could see different ones lying on the floor. >> two adults and two children were passed out on the floor from carbon monoxide poisoning leaking from their furnace.

they have given one child a seizure. >> i think they didn't know what was happening. he fell off the bed. i guess he was unconscious. the hospital let them know it was gas. >> doctors treating the boy at children's hospital sent paramedics to the home when nobody answered phone calls. but the children's uncle got their first. according to the shock trauma doctor treating the whole family. >> he saw the house mates collapse on the ground near the four month old who was in a seat. and then he went upstairs and found the two oldest children in the hallway collapsed. unconscious outside their bedroom and the mother collapsed unconscious on the ground. >> she started pulling people out of the house just when rescue crews alive. since then, shay they have been getting treatment. >> the two children will be finishing up this evening. they are expected to make a fullrecovery. peggy fox, 9news now.

>> the family had no detectors and the dad says he's going to install them right away. >> police have released the chilling 911 calls from the day josh powell killed himself and his boys in a home explosion. in them, you hear a frantic social worker pleading with emergency workers after she brought children to the home for a supervised visit. the rest of the story from manuel. >> a social worker was the first to alert police that something was wrong at josh powell's home. >> i'm on a supervised visitation for a court ordered visit and something really weird has happened. >> elizabeth tells the 911 operator that seven-year-old charlie and five-year-old were one step ahead of her. when powell slammed the door on her. >> i could hear one of the kids crying, they wouldn't let me in. >> griffin hall grows frustrated as she waits for police. >> how long will it be? >> i don't know, ma'am. >> this could be life

threatening. he went to court on wednesday and he didn't get his kids back. and this is really -- i'm afraid for their lives. >> inside, police say josh brutally attacked his boys, then used gasoline to blow up his house. >> ma'am -- >> he blew up the house and the kids. >> the kids and the father were in the house? >> yes. yes, he slammed the door in my house. i kept knocking. i thought it was a mistake. i called 911. >> powell sent an e-mail to his sister that day indicating he may do something drastic. >> he said something about, he can't live without his sons. >> powell was the main person of interest in the 2009 disappearance of the boy's mother, susan, in utah. manuel, cbs news. >> and susan powell's parents say the boys recently started

to remember more and more about that night that their mom disappeared. >> a union representing workers is being blamed for last august's deadly stage collapse at the indiana state fair. seven people died in that disaster. they gathered to see the country duo sugarland perform. 50 others were hurt. contributed to the collapse and an attorney says the union is being made a scapegoat. >> we're going to switch to lighter now. costco is the most popular store. it was named number one in the quality of merchandise in the store and online. it also won high marks for its electronics, sporting goods, and jewelry. costco was the only one in the survey to get an outstanding overall rating. rounding out the top five, kohl's, jc penney. wal-mart did not make the top

on to tonight's health alert, a new study shows spanking kids could lead to problems. researchers reviewed several studies, which is controversial and found kids who were physically punished had more mental health disorders and slower brain development than those who were not. the article published says parents should find other more constructive ways to discipline their kids. >> taking a nap during the middle of your workday. wouldn't that be a dream? doctors say dozing off for a bit can improve our health and our productivity and now some companies are waking up to the idea. >> dick herman is napping on the job, but his bosses don't mind. they encourage it. >> it rejuvenates me. i am much better focusing. >> herman works at a mobile

maryland, and frederick, virginia until 8:00 tonight. 1 to 2 inches possible. that is being a little optimistic. here's a look at doppler. we see some snow north and west of town. leesburg and gaithersburg and reston, a little mix between columbia, maybe heading into bethesda, and south and east of town, we are looking at the green, which is light rain at this hour. and so for most of southern maryland, this will be a rain event for you. you might see a few flakes mixed in. showing us a beautiful shot of the white house tonight, where mostly on the beltway, we're looking at light rain. temperatures down to 38 degrees. the winds are fairly light out of the northeast at 5 miles per hour. temperatures around downtown, upper 30s. leesburg at the freezing mark. hagerstown 32. annapolis in the lower 40s. i'm concerned about place like

hagerstown as temperatures will continue to fall into the 20s, which means some slick spots could be developing overnight and into tomorrow morning. so, minor snowstorm. just bad timing. snow and rain for that evening commute. mainly wet areas. and we will look for slick spots tomorrow. definitely, if you have kids, walk them out to the bus stop because i think the driveway and the sidewalk could get slick. here's a look at the future cast. we're looking at once the system moves on through, plenty of high pressure moves back in. lots of shine for tomorrow and temperatures will be on the chilly side and on through friday, we'll still see the dry conditions. here's a look at our snow potential. final call. okay, so in the gray, including the district and the immediate d.c. metro area, a trace to 1 inch. as you head further north and west, maybe 1 to 2 inches. 2 to 4 inches in the higher elevations. even 4 inches is optimistic.
