. new at 11:00, spies like these help to catch osama bin laden, by why do they want to use them here on civilians. plus we're tracking if the rain or snow will be gone for the morning commute. but first tonight, breaking news. a local paramedic responding to a call falls from a highway overpass. >> this is 9news now. right now, traffic in arlington finally moving again after a paramedic responding to a car fire went from rescuer to victim. >> alexandria fire officials say the medic fell off an overpass and into an rocky creek bed. this happened on i395 right over four mile run. ken molestina live there with more on exactly what happened. >> reporter: really what happened out here can only be described as tragic. virginia state police have now taken over the investigation.

the big question tonight, why did that paramedic fall over the overpass? rescuers rushed to try to save one of their own. alexandria fire officials say a seven year veteran of the department fell 20 feet off of an overpass and into a creek full of large rocks. >> i saw him and they immediately did cpr. >> i started crying and then i got down and started praying. >> reporter: according to neighbors who live near the creek, he was lying motionless when fellow rescuers got down to where he was at. >> i saw the ems working on their buddy for a good 20, 30 minutes. i hope he's all right. i don't know if he made it or not. >> reporter: alexandria fire officials believe the first responder fell through a gap in the overpass. more than likely, it was through a space in between the roads just like this one. if you look closely, you can see the narrow gap in between the overpass. what is still a mystery is what caused that paramedic to fall through. those that saw it take place are praying for the medic and his family as they hope for the

best. >> i feel sorry for the girlfriend or wife. she came down there and i said a little prayer for her. i hope he gets better. >> reporter: just a little bit ago, i did get off with the fire official over at alexandria fire. i'm being told the paramedic remains in critical condition tonight. i've also learned that he was a medic from the seminary road station in alexandria. the medic was taken to a trauma center in dc. once again, still listed in critical condition tonight. back to you. >> okay. this just in to 9news now. police have arrested a man wanted on charges of sexually assaulting a little girl inside a dc school. in custody 21-year-old devon wood of southeast. and police say he's the man who entered dc's ketcham elementary during school hours last week and assaulted a student. wood now charged with second degree child sex abuse. tonight snow has come and gone from the dc metro area leaving behind very little mess. it started to fall early this

afternoon coating cars but not sticking to the road. >> but we are not in the clear just yet. let's check in with anny hong. >> derek and anita, we have two things we should be concerned about. some areas of patchy fog developing. and also some areas of ice we could see on some of the untreated surfaces and the road. the temperatures are dropping to below freezing. here is a look at some of the pictures we got in earlier today of the snow. this is courtesy of jeffrey thomas coming in from maryland where you can see a nice shot coating the grass and the trees out there earlier today. how much snow did we get? well, not a whole lot. nothing to write to mom about. damascus an inch. hagerstown also coming in at one inch of snow. herndon, virginia almost half an inch. and stevens city getting 8 tenths of an inch. the system has moved on through.

you can see part of it moving into new york city but we have clear skies overnight as high pressure dominates our weather pattern over the next couple of days here. temperatures are right at the freezing mark here in downtown, but already did he blow freezing in gaithersburg, frederick, martinsburg, hagerstown, so we have moisture on the ground. that's why we'll see areas of fog developing. culpeper already seeing fog reports coming in. also the untreated roads. even stepping on your front porch you might be a little bit slippery. overnight partial clearing and cold. areas of fog. lows 25-32 degrees. we'll talk more about another chance for snow this weekend coming up a little later. back to you. >> thank you, anny. >> we might note that storm did drop a little more snow north of the beltway, but it looks like now things are cleared up. matt jablow has that story from frederick, maryland. >> reporter: here in frederick north and west of the district, the area that was supposed to bear the front of today's storm, as you can see the roads are

just a little wet but few people here are complaining. the snow started falling in frederick county early this afternoon and it looked for a while like it might actually accumulate. especially in the mountains. but by early this evening the snow had stopped falling and in downtown frederick the only sign of the storm was a dusting of snow on a few cars. how were the roads today? >> not bad at all. >> reporter: people we spoke to said memories of the wicked weather of the past few years are still very much stuck in their minds and they're grateful for this winter's mild conditions. what a difference from winter's past, huh? >> absolutely. yes, last year there was a tunnel just to get through the roads. a tunnel. >> reporter: the only question now is whether the roads will be icy for tomorrow morning's commute. people here in frederick are hoping tomorrow will be as mild as most of the rest of the winter. matt jablow, 9news now. well, the first witnesses take the stand at the yeardley love murder trial. george yugly is charged with

killing love, his ex-girlfriend. prosecutors say a drunk yugly broke down love's bedroom door, beat her and left her for dead. he had no intentions of killing that young woman. among the first witnesses, yeardley love's mom. and she nearly lost it up on the witness stand when they asked her how she learned of her daughter's death. new at 11:00, city hall has fired the chief and the deputy chief of the district's protective services police department. this according to the washington post. that police department handles building security and law enforcement on dc government property. let go were the chief lewis cannon and his deputy benjamin pietra. they did not offer a reason for the firings. why is underage drinking so dangerous. here are stark examples. each year 5,000 people under had the age of 21 die as a result of using alcohol.

that statistic is according to. cdc. here is another fact as far as the adolescent brain. people who start drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to become dependent or alcoholics at some point in their adult life. and the younger the kids start to drink, the more they are at risk. the more they are at risk for becoming victims of sexual assault as well as possibly at higher risk for suicide and homicide. 9 wants you to know we're doing our part to help combat this problem. for weeks we videotaped dozens of teens buying booze from a liquor store in northwest washington. a mother of the teenager tipped us off to the store. one teen said she had been buying alcohol illegally for years. today we went to the district to find out what is being done. a spokesperson with the alcohol beverage regulatory district says within the last week they sent their usual undercover

agent in to make a purchase. >> we went to the store and we found no violations because he did not sell to the minors 9news now alerted metropolitan police that this business was selling to teens back in early december of last year. mpd told us it brought the issue to the attention of abra that very same week, and we waited to confront the store owner until january 14th, 2012, more than a month after letting authorities know what we had found at town square market. 9news now repeatedly asked for interviews with abra, and those were turned down until today. we're going to be following this topic, this very important issue and bringing you any new developments when we get them. first on 9, the 22-year-old that killed -- spending the next 20 years in prison is excessive. kids think this will never happen to them, so locking me up for all these years doesn't send a message. in any event, if there needs to

be a message sent, does anyone think 5-10 years doesn't send a message? so you're a social worker and awe accompany two young -- accompany two young boys to what is supposed to be a supervised visit to their estranged father. but the dad grabs the boys, lock the door and won't answer the door. >> he blew up the house with the kids. >> the kids and the father were in the house? >> yes. yes. he slammed the door in my face so i kept knocking. thought it was a mistake. i kept knocking. and then i called 911. >> and that is the 911 call that social worker made last weekend in washington state. investigators have now released the tape. josh powell and his sons all died when the house went up in that ball of flame you see right there. police believe powell had poured gas throughout the home and simply lit a match. he was under investigation for his wife's disappearance, and he

lost custody of those two boys. privacy advocates are worried now that congress has authorized the increased use of unman aerial drone here in the united states. these eyes in the skies have been instrumental in the fight against terrorists abroad, but do we want them spying on american citizens at home? gary nurenberg has that. >> reporter: they can look really little , especially way up in the sky. essentially invisible. >> the thing that allows observation of people by the government in public places. but this is to an entirely new unprecedented degree. >> reporter: the bigger ones, predators and global hawks, have helped track and with bombs kill american military enemies abroad. and police see law enforcement uses at home scoping out a street demo like those we see so often in dc. following suspects say in an illegal gun case. seeing who is illegally crossing the border and wear or taking over the duties now filled by

more expensive helicopters with their pilots. >> you can give law enforcement the ability to have some sort of aerial asset at a much cheaper cost. >> reporter: fighting wildfires. any type of fire for that matter. >> it let's them know where the hot spots are. where people might be trapped. >> reporter: but privacy advocates see dangers. >> we have this really weird inconsistency when people are not knowing when the government is going to be watching them in opposition to our very beloved constitutional right not to be observed by the government unless there is a warrant. unless there is probable cause. >> reporter: the industry says essentially relax. >> police have been using cameras on helicopters for decades. i think there is an ability to have unmanned aircraft follow some of those guidelines that exist. >> reporter: but privacy advocates want more. regulations that specify when and why a drone can be used to

we got pictures in thanks to bill walsh showing this of his yard. you can see the snow sticking to the grassy areas. he go the a ruler and he said it's two inches. it's pretty good up there. but we're expecting high pressure to dominate the weather pattern. you can see where it's much quieter tonight. precip is to the north of us and basically out in the coast. and we'll see temperatures cold overnight and also we've got light winds. we have the moisture on the ground. and the clearing skies that can see some areas of fog developing overnight. so right now leesburg and manassas reporting some fog at this hour. temperatures are right around freezing for gaithersburg, leesburg same deal. also in the freezing mark. temperatures will get down into the mid 20s out in the suburbs, especially by early tomorrow morning. so below freezing thursday morning. go very slowly out there. sunny and dry for thursday and

friday. and the weekend we're going to see arctic air come back in and a chance for snow returns. but just snow showers. here is a look at the future cast. lots of sunshine tomorrow. it's going to be a very brilliant day. blue skies out there. you'll want your sunglasses. friday same deal. a couple clouds moving in maybe friday night. and we have a slight chance for snow showers maybe on saturday. right now not a lot is expected. and then we'll see much colder conditions, though, especially by sunday. so overnight what can we expect? partial clearing and cold conditions. some areas of fog. lows mid 20s to low 30s around downtown. tomorrow morning mostly sunny and cold. a few slick spots are possible. especially with walks and bridges and overpasses. even the parking lot in the school areas could also see some slick spots if they have not been treated. we'll see northwest winds at about 5-10 miles per hour. the afternoon still lots of sunshine both cool. you will want your jacket and sunglasses. highs mid 40s into the upper 40s. so in cumberland, temperatures there topping out 43.

lots of sun. 45 in winchester. 44 in hagerstown. gaithersburg also in the mid 40s. washington dc 46. andrews air force base 47. average high for this time of year is 45 degrees. here is how our thursday breaks down, 20s and 30s to start. a chilly day for tomorrow. watch out for the slick spots in the morning and areas of dense fog possibly. the next seven days, friday around 50 degrees. pretty nice. then on saturday partly to mostly cloudy and colder. a chance for snow showers on saturday. maybe as early as friday. we'll watch these models. and then on sunday, we're going to be cold only in the mid 30s. but look at the overnight lows saturday into early sunday morning. in the teens. it's also going to be windy on sunday. so that wind chill factor single digits potentially over the weekend. >> we're not used to that. >> it will feel like winter for sure. all right. it's claim your cash time. all this week we're trying to reunite people with cash and valuables being held by state
