through the three-foot gap in the roadway. now, he fell about 30 feet down into four-mile creek, hitting his head on a rock. he was taken to the hospital where he died almost 24 hours later. and now both the alexandria fire department and virginia state police, they are investigating, exactly what happened and why he fell through the crack as being called right now, just a tragic accident. but whatever happens and comes from the investigation as the chief said and a day of great sadness for everyone here at the alexandria fire department and, of course, for his family. now, he is survived by his wife, rebecca. >> yes, just very sad, very much so indeed. thank you. we'll turn to today's testimony in the yeardley love murder trial. they took a step-by-step view through the emergency efforts to save the life of yeardley love. now, they tried to convince the jurors that the horrible bruising on love's body had

been caused by the paramedics trying to resuscitate her. but bruce leshan said some of the most damaging testimony came from a friend when he burst into a room to find him strangling love months before he's accused of killing her. >> reporter: he actually wrapped his arms around the prosecutor's neck to try to show the jurors what he saw. he said yeardley love was trying to free herself. he said she ran out crying hysterically, screaming that she could not breathe. they insist that nothing he did to yeardley love that night just before uva graduation was violent enough to kill her, but the first officer who responded to a desperate 911 call from her roommate knew almost immediately that this was not an alcohol overdose. her mouth was caked with dry blood, her right eye was

bruised purple and swollen shut. detective sergeant john bails told jurors that love was obviously the victim of some kind of violence. there was a large discoloredded area on the right side of her face, an obvious abrasion on her neck and chin. >> medics performed cpr and they asked one of them if the cpr might have bruised her body. the medics said while they thought it was possible for cpr to bruise someone that he had never seen it and he says that he did not see it on yeardley love. >> one of the defense theories here is that yeardley love died from a fatal combination of pills and alcohol. but her doctor testified that he scanned her heart repeatedly, gave her ekg's, and that there was nothing medically that would have caused her heart to suddenly stop. in charlottesville, bruce

leshan, 9news now. >> reporter: they found love's laptop with e-mails threatening to her kill in a dumpster that was just about to be picked up. the 27-year-old ashley jean campbell is now facing child sex offense charges. police say that campbell was involved in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student from the fall of 2010 until just last month. she was reportedly driving them to a park where they would engage in the sexual court. she was freed after posting bond. i'm matt jablo where a teacher here at the school is in serious trouble with the law tonight after being accused of the lengthy relationship with one of the students. the school on the road here in rockville, they are known to a lot of people today they are making bad news, thanks to the alleged actions of one of their

teachers. the 27-year-old ashley campbell a kindergarten teacher at montrose christian is now accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. >> the teacher did confess to relationship. >> reporter: they said that they had sex numerous times in the montgomery county park. >> reporter: and this occurred in her vehicle. >> reporter: police say that the school administrators notified them of the relationship after receiving an anonymous elias abuelazam mail about it last friday. while the school's parents were notified earlier today. >> it's dust gust -- disgusting. >> yes, absolutely. just absolutely. i was trying to act like that. she is just a nice person. >> reporter: in rockville, matt jablo, 9news now. >> one of the e employees accused of collecting the unemployment checks while still on the job in the city is out of the job tonight. the source tells our own bruce johnson that the d.c. council member filed that staff for wednesday.

it was earlier this week that 130 current and former city government workers were collecting the jobless benefits, the benefits while they still had jobs. and the scam cost the city at least $840,000 over the three- year period. today, the attorney generals from all over the country announced a $26 billion settlement with the big banks to help out homeowners on the verge of being foreclosed upon. we asked scott broom to explain how the money might get to you. >> reporter: the settlement provides a first for people that have been foreclosed upon. maybe they have a dispute with the deal. the banks might offer as much as a $2,000 compensation to those who have already lost their homes. more importantly, folks who are under water here in this home and that is common. perhaps they will owe over there are be 00,000 on a house that is now only worth about $250,000. well in this settlement, the banks are being encouraged to forgive some of the principle. in this case let's say they knock off $50,000.

if you renegotiate the loan, that could save your homeowner as much as $230 a month in monthly payments. here is another big category. folks with high interest loans. let's say they owe that $300,000 and they got a high- interest loan, they cannot get out of the rain, they cannot refinance. in this settlement, they will be encouraged to refinance them, more at market rates. today's market rates is 3.75. in this case, they could save the homeowner as much as $600 a month. that might really be the difference for them between staying in the house or giving it up. now, these are hypothetical numbers where the bank has not said exactly how it will work. but you can see why today's news has raised a lot of hope. and that is the only state not to sign off on the settlement with the big lenders. now, it is getting a little chilly. >> yes, it is. the temperatures, they made it

another guilty plea today from the so-called home grown terrorist, jesse curtis morton admitted to conspiring to solicit the murders of the creators of south park. he ran a revolutionary muslim website from brooklyn and the threats were in response to the episode of south park that depicted them in the bare costume. he pleaded guilty today to federal court in al andrea,

facing five years in prison for each of the charges. a tennessee man is facing murder charges for reportedly killing a couple who unfriended his daughter on facebook. the 60-year-old marvin potter appeared in a tennessee court to face the murder charges. before their death, the victims complained to police that potter's daughter were harassing them after deleting her as a friend. the couple's 8-month-old baby was found in the home unharmed. and the washington post report says that authorities have handled other cases where potter's daughter believed she was snubbed by somebody. and in chicago, a teenager was ecstatic when he found his drawing was chosen for this year's city sticker. all that happened when the city leaders rejected the drawing, saying it appeared to depicting gang imagery. the picture honors men and women's uniforms. there are some critics that say that is a well-known gang signal.

exactly how it was planned. a massive cargo vessel collided with the people in the disabled sailboat. people that the vessel had been coming to help. a 9-year-old boy and their dad were knocked into the water. the horizon alliance traveled nearly 150 miles to get to the boat after answering the call from the coast guard. >> that will be the 20-foot swell. and the darkness and the maneuvering, they have shifted their side to the football field. and getting it close to the small sailboat. you know, it will take a special skill. >> they were maneuvering to pick up the passengers. as it became closer to the sailing vessel that collided somehow. >> well, all three passengers, they were wearing life jackets with the strobe lights. crews were able to reach the 29- year-old first, but it took another 50 minutes for the ship to turn around and pick up his brother, bradley and his nephew. all three had mild hypothermia. otherwise they are doing okay. welcoming up on 9news now,

al fred from new carlton with no sympathy at all, who claims a brand new avenue speed camera amounts to a speed trap designed to crush their wallets. give me a break. try the economy or the politics. as for the speed cameras, the answer is simple. slow down, and the problem will go away. well, of course, you are right as far as it goes, but the residents here complained that the particular camera is at the bottom of the hill, which means you'll get a ticket for not hitting the breaks long enough. but of course, you know, we know that the city would never put that camera in a specific spot, just to give out maximum tickets. that would be unfair. in the meantime, over on the wusa9 facebook page, several of you say that a proposed new virginia law that
