>> we have stunning news out of l.a. whitney houston has been found dead in a beverly hills hotel. she won a grammy award a half dozen times, but it was a career marred by drug abuse and repeated attempts and promises of recovery. police in los angeles confirm that 48-year-old whitney houston died at the beverly hilton hotel where she had been a guest. >> at approximately 3:43 p.m. this afternoon, the beverly hills police department received an emergency call from the beverly hilton hotel. >> police in los angeles were offering little clues as to what might have caused whitney houston's death. >> in the hotel on the fourth floor, they were attempting reseesation measures. there were no obvious signs of any criminal intent at this time. and it's being investigated by

grammy's live tomorrow night right here at wusa9. we'll go live to l.a. for more on whitney houston's death. snow is falling. we have high winds, freezing temperatures. let's go to anny hong. >> we have some light snowfalling right now here at the weather terrace in northwest d.c. and some flurries. you can see pretty much some widespread light snow showers falling. a closer look and zoom on in for you. where the snow is falling. we have it around bethesda, fairfax, even out to for the bay and annapolis. brandy wine, all seeing some light snow. we're not expecting a whole lot to accumulate. a coating out there. earlier today, we saw more snowfalling. this is in frederick county where he said they had some whiteout conditions earlier today when you factor in the really high winds that came blowing in today with that

arctic cold front. how much snow did we get? columbia 1 inch. dulles international reporting just over half an inch of snow from today. the wind, that is the other big story out there. this is through 7:00 tomorrow morning. a high, a wind advisory has been in effect for much of the d.c. area. expecting gusts up to 50 miles per hour. some cold temperatures out here. what does it feel like now? 10 degrees in downtown. manassas, 8. even andrew's air force base, it feels like 11 degrees. these numbers will drop overnight into early tomorrow morning when temperatures will feel like in the single digits. if you are far north and west of town, higher elevations are also windchill advisory where we can see temperatures feeling like minus 5 degrees. so overnight, these snow showers should be ending,

becoming partly cloudy, still very cold and windy. lows will get down into the mid 20s in downtown. down to the teens in the suburbs. we'll talk more about the cold weather that is going to impact us for the weekend. if you can stay inside, definitely. it's a good weekend to read a book, have some hot chocolate and watch a movie with the family. talk about the chance for more snow coming up later in that seven-day forecast. >> romney wins the maine caucus by a slim margin. even though several places in the state will not hold their caucuses until sometime next weekend. charlie webster says the governor defeated ron paul with 52% of the vote compared to paul's 47%. newt gingrich and rick santorum didn't campaign in the state. santorum drew 18%. gingrich drew 6% of the vote respectively. >> mitt romney also won the

cpac presidential straw poll of conservative activists. romney captured 17% of that vote. the republican presidential hopefuls address 3400 attendeis at the conservative political action conference in northwest washington on friday. ron paul skipped the conference, campaigned in maine. only 12% of the votes in that straw poll here in washington. >> funeral services will take place next weekend for joshua wiseman. the alexandria paramedic died friday, a day after he fell from a roadway while responding to an emergency and suffered a severe head injury. visitation will take place wednesday at the everly, wheatly funeral home in alexandria. funeral services will honor -- take place at the hebrew congregation. layed to rest at ivy hill cemetery in alexandria,

virginia. a transgender woman is murdered. police have a suspect, but no motive. trying to determine if this was a hate crime. family and friends gather for the funeral of japarker jones in southwest washington. the 23-year-old parker was stabbed to death at a bus stop last week on east capital street. >> i think that, you know, just being out, catching a bus and somebody gets attacked like that. i think that's a crime, you know. shouldn't have, people shouldn't be out in the fear of walking the streets. >> 55-year-old jerry montgomery is being held. faces second-degree murder charges. >> a teenager who opened fire on a crowd of young people in prince william county, virginia, is in police custody tonight. 19-year-old johnny was taken into custody without incident. he is accused in the shooting last night that followed a series of altercations between

two groups after an argument broke out during a basketball game at garfield sr. high school. there was a fight and a second brawl occurred when a teen showed up at the mall. >> it appeared that two groups reconvened down there during the process the shooting took place. no one got injured, however, the vehicle containing the initial shooter drove to another location where he opened fire on two innocent bystanders who were walking in the area. >> the female victim is expected to be okay. faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and shooting from a vehicle. >> this week, we are trying to reunit people with money and valuables that are being held in city and state. that money and items could be from old safe deposit boxes, forgotten bank accounts. if you see your name at the bottom of the tv screen under claim your cash, it means you

plagued is ready to set sail again. the crown princess reported to florida this afternoon after 200 passengers became sick with the noro virus. it was the second time in as many weeks as the ship is forced to return to port because of the illnesses. crews sanitized the ship and was ready to set sail again this evening. new passengers say they aren't concerned. >> we feel comfortable. we're not worried about any virus or anything or being on the rocks. we trust our captain. >> highly contagious virus causes vomiting, nauseous, and distress. days after the maryland attorney general's office set up a phone bank calls in homeowners. the phone bank was set up three days ago in this conference room in baltimore. on the very first day, agents with the attorney general's consumer protection division fielded more than 500 calls. maryland is getting a billion

whitney houston, a six-time grammy award winner herself is dead at the age of 48. we spoke to lieutenant with the beverly hills police department who said it was hotel staff who called 911 early this afternoon after being notified by someone in whitney's party that something was wrong. she was supposed to attend a pregrammy party. it was hosted by clive davis. the music producer that discovered houston. when paramedics arrived, it was the worst case scenario. she was declared dead at 3:55 p.m. the police department says that they have found no signs of any criminal intent in the actual hotel room, but as for specifically what was found and how she died, bruce, we don't know at this point. >> one of the things that is puzzling and there's a lot of puzzles surrounding this, what are the other guests saying? she was traveling with an interraj, have any of these people been interviewed?

welcome back, everyone. we start with our live look at the capital. we see some light snowfalling here on the michael and son weather camera. it is fairly light. most areas seeing flurries, but it is quite widespread. temperatures are dropping 25 degrees right now. the dew point 16. we have winds out of the northwest at 22 miles per hour. we got the snowfalling right now. we're not expecting a lot to accumulate, but it will be enough to make the roads slick out there with these very cold temperatures. here's a look at live doppler

9,000hd. this blue indicating the light snowfalling. let's zoom on in for you where we are seeing snowfalling in much of the d.c. metro area. pretty much the entire beltway. reston, manassas, fairfax, gaithersburg, bowie, and out toward annapolis as well looking at some light snow. again, we're not expecting a lot to accumulate, but it will be enough to put a coating and make roads pretty slick. we don't have any winter weather watches or advisories in effect for the immediate d.c. metro, but a warning out west until 6:00 tomorrow morning and now toward cambridge and maryland through tomorrow winter weather advisory. we did see quite a bit of snowfall further north and west of us. getting 2 1/2 inches. steven city, only .6. that wind advisory is in effect until tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. with gusts up to 50 miles per hour expected.

right now 29-mile an hour gust and temperatures spinning like 10 around town. down to the single digits like leesburg. 4 and 5 degrees. but once we get through this, we're talking about milder weather coming this way. tomorrow's high only 35. cold and windy. monday, a little milder. not as cold, lots of sunshine. valentine's day, mostly cloudy. the chance for a passing snow shower once again. cloudy for the middle of the week wednesday and thursday, but back into the lower 50s. chance of showers on thursday. so if you're heading out early tomorrow morning, watch out. those roads can be slick with additional snowfalling and cold temperatures tomorrow. >> okay, thanks. a lot of basketball. >> a lot of stuff going on, especially maryland. they go to durham and play good basketball today. troops a little under manned. see how maryland was done. georgetown, they are looking to keep their eyes on the prize after that tough loss at

syracuse. and be on the lookout for a hungry tiger. hungry tiger. he's making his move on one thing that makes our day when we're on the field is watching lauren get up to bat. our daughter loves baseball. and we tried to get her on some teams, and there were some coaches that would include her but she just never felt right about it. hitting the ball and then making the other kids wait, just wasn't her idea of what baseball was. we thought she would just have to settle for being a fan; until rotary stepped in. and they built this special field. they took an idea of just letting the kids play baseball and made it fit these kids, rather than trying to make the kids fit the field. lauren forgets about what she can't do, because they've given her the opportunity to do something that we never thought possible. when these kids get to play ball, their heart is there they're so excited and they just get to feel like regular kids. on the phone i heard her telling her grandmother that she was the luckiest kid in the world.
