, is a birdie putt coming up for dustin johnson that would move him into a tie for the moment with kevin na, who you see right there in the white shirt. a lot of folks thought the west coast would be a struggle for dustin coming off of the late season knee surgery in 2011. pour its in. he has some track record here for dustin johnson. twice a winner in 2009-2010. could have easily won the u.s. open. he had a good chance at it. and kevin na, as you see, wi is

way back there. three groups on the 18th right now. na has this for par now to stay in that fifth place tie with dustin johnson. >> they are go to grind on this one. check the sharpy line on the golf ball. jim: look at the waves splashing up against the wall here. some stormy weather to come in here overnight. kevin na, i thought all week long he might be the guy to beat, he is playing with a superb amateur player, jimmy dunne. played with phil mickelson as well the first three days. he had a stumble today at the sixth. there you go. knock its in for a round of 70.
6:04 pm

nine feet or so. for me it will all be about facing the music with the media. i will be fascinated to hear what he say busy this. you know -- jim: you are all ready to write the story he is back. it will happen this year. but having this type of performance when you get into saying augusta or u.s. open position to win, is there lingering effects of something like this and some of the other recent final rounds? nick: this is like a boxing match. they slugged it out and phil walked away. jim: how about just for tiger? nick: this was a bad day. this was dreadful. there were missed putts. there were blocked shots. he didn't like the 7-iron down the ninth. he pulls it left. he maybe feared right. his game on a sunday afternoon, he has a game good enough to
6:07 pm
get in contention but not good enough to finish it off. >> one final knockdown pitching wedge from 114. nick: middle of the green, spin it back. he is just showing off now. jim: yes, he is. nick: this is a day of perfection. this is as good as we have seen phil play for a long time. jim: it is the round of the day. in fact 67, the best score otherwise. he will have that little one for a 64. it would be the best round of the day by three. nick: the way he put it together, hit the second green in two, couple of great putts. jim: charlie wi back on the tee. >> that is with a 3-wood. nick: makes sense to me. 3-wood and a midiron and a wedge again. play for the fat of the play for the fat of the fairways.
6:08 pm
jim: one of my favorites about phil is the family history here at pebble beach. you think he is a popular winner here? just throiven this ovation. nick: guess who else gets to listen to it? jim: you mentioned his mother, mary. phil's grandfather, albert santos. talk about the american dream, his grandfather, shortly after pebble beach opened, which it opened back in 1919. his grandfather as a young boy, 12 or 14 years old, along with
6:09 pm
his brother, they used to come down here on a train to caddie at pebble beach for 25 cents per bag. generations later the grandson will win at pebble beach for a fourth time and it will be worth over a million and money is not his concern right now. it is about the title. it will be his 40th. this is the point he deflated the field. tiger just holed his shot and phil knocked it down right on top of him. look how much you can see it written all over his feet >> celebrating the par putt. at 15 there was another one just like it. not a single bogey today. those two saves to go along
6:10 pm
with an eagle and five birdies and maybe there is one more birdie to boot. nick: i know phil has a lot of gratitude for what he has got. i know personally when i used to walk off a win like this wait in your career, you say wow. i can still do it. i can still win. this will be a massive boost. it will be a massive boost for augusta national. jim: there was no indication it was coming up. tony romo here at 18. everyone is missing this on the high side. phil had not been in contention at the humana event. missed the cut at home in a tournament he starred at many times at torrey pines. really was not a factor last week. nick: he was very narrow at torrey pines. got more extension going back.
6:11 pm
holding his left leg a lot firmer. that changed things. getting that an inch or two more, you know, more to the golf swing. jim: he will have that little one left to move into a tie for ninth. there is a log jam at 9-under par. phil will have this little one and just nudge it to close the door and make it official for a fourth time. the first time that he won here, nick, you were playing
6:12 pm
back in those days. he won it in 1998. instead of canceling the tournament they moved the final round of the tournament from february to the day after the pga in washington state. they came back on that monday, middle august, and won it for the first time. jim: number four and phil at his finest. nick: phil at his finest, tiger, still a question mark. jim: 64 it is. tiger taking no time. oh, my goodness. nick: he is still putting. jim: you know, this is what has happened to tiger today, being
6:13 pm
in phil's wake is what we saw for over 10 years what tiger would do to everyone else. this is one of the sweetest. that say its right there for those two. this is a victory they will treasure. nick: i think as we get older, it is all about gratitude to think we still got it. boy did he do it today. tiger still has a five-footer. 75. 11 shots higher than mickelson's total today.

wow. for a moment there think how crucial the birdie by mickelson really was. that would have been an eagle. the metlife shot of the day. what do you choose? how about the one at 13. nick: the clever thing about this is the follow through. difficult to get the ball to do this. normally bites and spins down. it runs in there for an easy tap-in. jim: metlife shot of the day on his way to victory. sot' s w-a-t-e-r proof. cool. what else does it d-o? it's fast. it's 4g lte. hawhat's l-t-e spell? nothing. w-h-y? hey, can we stop spell talking now? ok. a-y. 6:22 pm
a good, solid start. i did not do that. 1-under through six, but phil was 5-under through six. that was the start i was hope to get to. i thought i could get it in the middle part of the round but instead i went the other way. >> was being paired with phil a factor at all? >> not at all. hi to go out there and post my number. i thought i had to shoot a 67 to 66 today was kind of the number going out there. that would not have been good enough. it was a fun day to be out there but it was frustrating at the same time. >> i see a lot of progress being made and a lot of quality golf shots. a matter of time before you put it together for four rounds. thanks, tiger. jim: all right. thank you peter. thanks to tiger for sticking toorned do that interview. that is one of the hardest times to sit back after a defeat like this and step in and answer the questions like that.
6:23 pm
nick: i take president great thing about what tiger could do in the past, he could make things happen. right now he can't make things happen on the course. jim: well mr. eastwood you go down to present a check and trophy. you have done that a few times. >> yes. jim: have you not seen many performances much better than that. >> that was exciting today. we talked about it last night briefly. he felt his game was really on. he went out and did it. jim: we always love having you up in the tower. sharing the broadcast with us. >> ok. jim: thank you. >> ok, nick. jim: still have the final group on the 18th green. charlie wi. that is a niceturnaround after that hiccup at the start. >> it was a big hiccup. i thought he would be on a

with play complete, waited around to go back for the ultimate souvenir. the flag at the 18th. phil remembered his grandfather. he used to give all of his victory flags to his grandfather. he useded to have them lining the walls of his den. again, we had co-champions in the pro-am. they will have their name on the back of the wall on the first tee. and a little waterford crystal is heading phil's way.
