2012. and good morning everyone. i'm terrell brown. we begin with the investigation into the death of whitney houston. the los angeles coroner's office says an autopsy has been performed. still, it will take weeks to determine exactly how the 48-year-old superstar died. houston was found dead in her hotel saturday afternoon. she was remembered at the grammy awards. elizabeth sanchez has the latest. elizabeth, good morning. >> good morning, terrell. music's biggest stars came out for a celebration, but it turned into a tribute celebrating one of their own. the grammys paid tribute to whitney houston as investigators work to figure out exactly how she died. ♪ and i -- >> jennifer hudson sang one of her most well-known songs. audience bowing their heads in prayer. >> we've been truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit. >> houston died in the bathtub of her fourth floor hotel room at the beverly hilton on the eve of the grammy awards. nominees and fellow ar cysts on the red carpet say she was an inspiration. >> you fantasized about being like her someday. >> she was such a great voice. we lost her way too early. >> many of music's biggest stars say it cast a shadow over the awards show. it could be weeks before investigators can answer questions about what caused the singer's death. >> there was no visible signs of trauma and froul play is not suspected. >> her autopsy was completed sunday but officials are waiting for the toxicology test results. >> the grammy award winner's career started to fade after reports of drug use. investigators haven't said if they found any illegal drugs

inside houston's hotel room saturday houston made her last known public appearance thursday in hollywood. some say the pop sensation was poised for a comeback. she just wrapped filming of a new musical drama due out this summer. meanwhile, this has been hard on her family and friends. her daughter was rushed to the hospital yesterday. she was treated and released for anxiety and her father, bobbi brown skipped his concert to be by her side. live in los angeles, elizabeth sanchez, cbs news. thank you so much. houston's former husband, bobby brown arrived in los angeles last night. he was swarmed by reporters at the airport. he performed in mississippi saturday night and was overcome with emotion on stage. in a written statement, brown asked for privacy. >> elton john paid tribute to houston during his show in las vegas last night. with all the trouble she went through, it was easy to forget how brilliant she was.

>> she could sing gospel, she could sing i will always love you and make you cry. and she was the most beautiful woman i think i've ever seen. she was incredible. >> john added that houston had one of the most beautiful voices he had ever heard then dedicated a song to her. ♪ >> there was reaction throughout the entertainment world to houston's death. dolly parton who wrote the hit i will always love you said i will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and i can truly say from the bottom of my heart, whitney, i will always love you. barbra streisand said she had everything, beauty, voice, how sad it could not bring her the same happiness. mariah carey said she will never be forgotten was one of the most beautiful voices to grace the earth.

more on the passing of whitney later in this broadcast. in politic, in washington, president obama submits his bum et for the 2013 fiscal year to congress. it calls for $4 trillion in spending cuts. $1.5 trillion in new taxes mostly by allowing the bush era tax cuts to expire the end of the year. $110 billion in short term job stimulus spending. the budget is sure to be hotly debated as the elections approach as is the white house position on contraception and religious institutions over the weekend. rick santorum had harsh words for the president and mitt romney. whit johnson reports. >> despite a distant finish in the main caucuses. >> this is a two-person race right now. >> a rising rick santorum sunday took sharp aim at republican rival mitt romney. >> mitt romney is the author of romney care, which is the biggest government expansion in the state of massachusetts. >> santorum blasted the white

house also for its latest concession on a contraception rule. >> there's no compromise here. >> it requires insurance companies, not employers, including religious oganizatios to foot the bill for birth control benefits. across the sunday talk shows, jack lou spent most of his time defending the change instead r of promoting the 2013 budget. >> we have broad consensus, not universal that this is an approach that's right. >> the contraception issue has been a rallying cry for republican presidential hopefuls all jockeying for support from a fractured conservative base. santorum's three-state sweep in colorado, minnesota and missouri this week wasn't enough to top mitt romney in the delegate count. accidental praise from candidate ron paul. >> do you think mitt romney, if he's the nominee, can beat barack obama? >> yeah, i do. i do. i think i could beat him too. >> republican candidates and voters will have a little time

to breathe. the next primaries aren't until february 28th in michigan and arizona. whit johnson, cbs news, washington. overseas, dpreek lawmakers approved an austerity budget. the harsh new budget means that greece can receive the next installment of bailout money. it's to keep them from defaulting on its loan. prior to the vote, riots broke out in athens and at least six other cities. the trouble started as more than 100,000 protesters marched on the greek parliament. they threw firebombs and rock at police who responded with tear gas. at least 45 businesses were damaged. more than 120 people were injured. switching gears now, cbs "moneywatch" time on a monday. gas prices on a steep climb and opening your wallet and purses for valentine's day. ashley morrison here in new york. >> we won't forget. good morning, terrell. overseas stocks in asia jumped.

nikkei gained half a percent and the hang seng also added half a percent. on wall street, investors are keeping a close eye on the situation in greece. they're hoping the dow will rally after losing 61 points last week. the nasdaq stayed flat for the week. another spike in gas prices according to the lundberg survey, the average cost of a gallon of regular has jumped nearly 12 cents over the last three weeks to $3.51. there's more money missing from bankrupt trading firm, mf global. n a trustee says an additional $400 million is missing from customer account. they filed for bankruptcy in october after it could not account for more than a billion dollars. americans are expected to spend more than $17 billion on sweethearts this valentine's day. the average person will spend $126. that's up 8.5% from last year.

los angeles. time now for a check of your national forecast. latest satellite pictures shows a storm moving across texas. dense clouds are coming off the pacific. over the northwest in northern california. the east coast is clear while another system sweeps across the great lakes into new england. in sports this morning, phil mickelson crushed tiger woods and everyone else at pebble beach. he started the day two shots behind woods. an eagle putt put him under and never looked back. woods finished in 15th place. mickelson finished at 17 under. his fourth victory at pebble beach. he's only the ninth player in pga history with 40 career wins. lebron james was on fire. in the first, he goes between two defenders for the rim hanging jam. ended up scoring 23 points. chris bosh finished with 14. miami now winners of ten of their last 12 games and show time in boston.
