through an entire community. >> this is the house in west virginia that volunteers from two states were trying to save at 3:30 this morning this . this is the young teenager who died, zach whitacre. thrown from a water tanker when his truck overturned. >> everyone is still in shock and dealing with the emotions. >> page whitacre spoke to the volunteer fire rescue company draped in black. zach whitacre's grandfather was a volunteer, too, his dad, doug, was driving is beyond comprehension. >> another layer of sadness to the whole event. i can't imagine how i would feel being the father. >> it was jeff's house, the whitacre's were trying to save.

they were called from neighboring gore to truck water in. the truck overturned on u.s. route 50 as they hustled to get a second load of water. >> we are volunteers. takes a special person to be a volunteer and put their life on the line. my thoughts and prayers go to their family. i'm proud to have volunteer firemen. >> here in gore, volunteer fire fighting isn't heroic. it's what neighbors and family do for each other. today, we were reminded that it is in fact heroic and the cost can be very high. in gore, virginia, scott broom, 9news now. >> certainly can. zach whitacre was riding on the rear of the fire truck when his dad lost control, according to the west virginia state police, who also noted the road was icy at the time. usually in a trial, the public and the media can see the evidence, but that is not the case for much of the evidence at the uva lacrosse murder trial and today the

judge denied a media request to make it possible to see and evaluate things. like george huguely's video taped statement to the police. bruce, we want to know why. >> yeah, derek, it was tough to listen to the huguely video tape that was played back here on friday. we could not see it because the prosecutors put it on a tv monitor here that was visible only to the judge, the jury, the lawyers, and huguely. all the public and the media got to see was the back of the tv. what did huguely look like when he said he struggled with yeardley love, but he said he did not kill her. no peek at his eyes. the courtroom is set up so a lot of the evidence is

invisible to the public and to the media. several media outlets, including 9news now, sent a lawyer to a hearing to ask the judge to play back the evidence on a second tv monitor facing the gallery. the judge refused. he said he was sympathetic to the media, but that it was too late and too disruptive to the trial to change things now. a lawyer for the media outlets pointed to a second monitor. already in place in the courtroom and suggested it could be hooked up over the lunch hour. but the judge said no and suggested courtrooms in charlottesville have been set up this way, perhaps since thomas jefferson's time. >> now media lawyer says there is a significant first amendment issue here. he says that the public and the media have a right to see and evaluate this evidence. the prosecutor got plenty angry

about that. he says that he only is legally required to show this evidence to the judge or the jury. the media outlets they plan to appeal, they plan to take this to the virginia court of appeals and that may happen starting as soon as right this hour. about 5:00. derek. >> in the meantime, the trial goes on, bruce leshan, thank you. >> two setbacks for the prosecution in the penn state sex abuse case. the judge granted jerry sandusky's request to visit with all of his grandchildren, except the three who are currently involved in a custody dispute. the judge also denied the prosecution's request for an out of town jury to hear the case. instead, a jury from state college will be picked just as sandusky's defense lawyer wanted. the former assistant coach has been on house arrest. an investigation into how a 30-foot sign fell on i-66 over the weekend. the sign hit a pickup truck

near monument avenue and fairfax during saturday afternoon's high wind. amazingly, no one was hurt. the department says sign structures are inspected every five years and this was checked out in december of '07. ultrasonic testing have also been done since the 2007 inspection. not much high wind to speak of today. topper on the terrace with tonight's monday evening forecast. >> we had wind gusts to 49 miles per hour on saturday. so essentially, 50-mile per hour winds crossed the area. you look off to the southwest, you'll see some clouds. going to stay dry tonight. not bad. 46 downtown. 43 in gaithersburg. we're looking at mid 40s in leesburg as well. jump the divide, only 28. now here's the deal. clouds are going to thicken up tonight. it's going to stay dry. notice the left hand portion of your screen. that could roll into the mountains by dawn tomorrow. and we'll come back and tell

you that's going to roll into here. in the meantime, increasing cloudiness, not as cold. low 26 to 34. winds will be light. come back and talk about whether or not we see wet snow flakes tomorrow morning and look ahead to another storm on thursday. >> the activist from around the country are in town to protest a visit from china's vice president. earlier today, hundreds of demonstrators marched down connecticut avenue from the chinese embassy to the white house in protest of what they call chinese police brutality. anny hong joins us live from louisiana fayette where another protest is taking place. >> reporter: these protesters holding signs. the american and tibetan flag, protesting against china. we have a coalition here, tibetans, and human rights groups. quite a few protests around

town. now several protesters were arrested by police today after they repelled from the arlington memorial bridge. they were hanging from ropes. the sign that read free tibet. we had 500 protesters who marched on connecticut avenue from the chinese embassy ending at louisiana fayette park. they are protesting the chinese government closing tibet to foreigners after opening fire on protesters, calling for freedom and the return on the dalai lama. and china's vice president during his visit to the u.s. >> we are highly critical and suspicious that you will probably continue the same violations of human rights. we are trying to raise awareness and raise caution to the western audiences. >> and this protest has been very well organized. it has been peaceful earlier

president obama delivered his 2013 budget plan. the $3.8 trillion spending plan

cuts to military and domestic spending. and the renewed plea for tax hikes todd very wealthy. at $350 billion to stimulate job growth. but the forecasted $901 billion deficit does fall short of the president's goal of cutting the deficit in half by the end of his first term and the republicans already say the cuts in the president's proposal just don't go far enough. president obama unveiled that budget proposal at the campus of the northern virginia community college today. >> plan would create an $8 billion fund to help connect community college students with businesses looking to hire workers for high growth industries. >> here in american, we have the best workers and some of the fastest growing companies in the world. there's no reason we can't connect the two and places like nova are proving that we know how to do it. >> the president says the fund could train 2 million workers in healthcare, transportation, and advanced manufacturing. >> dozens of teachers

demonstrated in prince william county today in protest of the superintendent's plan for no raises until the year 2016. but the teachers target of action is the board of supervisors. more from woodbridge. >> teachers in three high schools, battlefield, and here at forest park, participanted in a work to the rule job action today. obviously having difficulty there with peggy's story. the superintendent along with other northern virginia school districts are hoping lawmakers dump registration. those are funds that help schools attract teachers with competitive salaries. transportation secretary, ray lahood went back to school today. part of the annual teach for

calmed down. the dew point is 13. that's troubling me just a little bit. as we get moisture rolling in tomorrow morning, that's why we could see a breeze, period of light snow or flurries. north and west of frederick and into hagerstown. here's the system. you know, it looks impressive right now, but it's not very well organized and by the time it gets into the tennessee and ohio valleys, it loses some of its umph. big thunderstorms there and snow into northern arkansas and missouri. nothing really organized. so more clouds than anything on tuesday. i think you would want to leave your umbrella at home. get ready to have it handy on thursday. you can skip it tomorrow. temperatures mid 50s. 45 in great falls. down 95, still upper 40s in fort belvoir. not as cold tonight.

the westminster dog show starts today at new york city's madison square garden. >> more than 2,000 dogs will spend the next two days trying to get the top prize of best in show. >> and manuel spent the day behind the seans of what we know is the oldest dog show in the country. >> reporter: they are the creme de la creme of the dog world. >> that's a face a mother and a father can love. >> from pampered poodles. >> it takes several hours of work to get him and five minutes to get me ready. >> and handsome hounds. >> he does everything he can to make everybody look at him. >> and it takes a lot of work.

we had a death in our family. ♪ [ music ] >> what a magic voice. beverly hills police say whitney houston was unconscious and unresponsive when they pulled her out of a bathtub in her hotel room. she was pulled out by a member of her staff saturday. we don't know what killed her and police say it may be weeks before we get some answers. however, we all do know about whitney houston's drug use and bruce johnson, you have been talking to folks who know about it. >> you'll hear that intro

again. they say the same fate is for them. >> music icon, whitney houston was honored at the grammy's last night. fans are calling radio stations and sending record sales through the roof again. >> here at the corner of panover place, otherwise known as the strip. they are also remembering whitney houston today. it's not the 170 million albums and songs that she sold. it's not the fortune. out here, it's the pain. it's her drug addiction that they are relating to. >> she got called up young and when she did it for so long, there was no quitting. >> the voice belongs to a crack addict who knows the side of whitney houston that most of us can only imagine. >> you can't quit, because that's part of her life. she couldn't function without it. >> that's his niece.

she tried years to get him and other relatives off the drugs. >> how many times a day do you have to hit the pipe? >> every day all day. >> all day? >> all day long, whenever i get a break. you holding me up now. >> the world lost a great woman, an icon. >> mary gordon is a recovering addict in downtown washington. she says whitney houston's sudden death is topic a in sessions with clients today. >> people think it's about stop using a substance. we have areas that have to be amended and sometimes we don't have a fix or the people to help us do that. >> olivia chase, daughter of a preacher, brought up in the church, like whitney houston, a crack addict in recovery. >> doesn't matter what i have or don't have. most precious possession, sometimes, for some people is just to know that stuff will kill you. >> that stuff will kill you.

we don't know the exact cause of death of whitney houston. may not know for several weeks. want to point out the research shows that the number of people addicted to drugs and alcohol in the washington area is higher than anywhere else in the country. 11% in d.c. 9% in both maryland and virginia. they say the supply of drug, the stress and the lack of treatment facilities all play into this. >> and what the last addict said, it doesn't matter what you have, there's still something missing. back to you in the newsroom. >> tonight we are monitoring developments in three cases across our area. first, a man accused of killing an offduty maryland state trooper is on trial. testimony is underway in the case against cor kneel i cornelius williams. he is accused of killing trooper brown. he was working as a security guard at the time. the trooper has thrown williams out of the restaurant over a dispute involving an unpaid bill. >> jury selection also started

today in the case of five men. literally accused of terrorizing parts of southeast d.c. the men are accused of four shooting deaths and nine other shootings on south capital street. investigators say the five went on a retaliatory shooting spree in 2010. this lasted eight days. prosecutors added 30 counts, bringing the total to 54. police say the shooting spree ended as some young people gathered outside a house just after a friend's funeral. and it will be life in prison for a former suburban hospital worker who stabbed his boss to death. sentencing was hand down today in the case of keith little. he is convicted in december of killing brockington jr. little stabbed his boss 72 times on new year's day 2011. today, little claimed he had been railroaded by authorities and he plans to appeal. lesli. >> the obama administration has proposed a new plan to help homeowners who are under water

refinance their loans. but with historically low mortgage rates, there are millions of other borrowers who might take steps to lower their home loans. and if you previously refinanced, we examine whether it's a good move to do it again for your bottom line. >> whit and beth bought their new jersey home last may. they locked in on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage at 5%. >> i couldn't believe that interest rates would ever go any lower than they were. 5% is pretty low. >> they did go lower and months after moving in, the clays refinanced at 4 1/4%. >> we had no closing costs and ultimately what we ended up having was simply an appraisal fee and cost of applying for a mortgage. >> it's important to figure out if it's enough of a

the winner of this weekend's $336 million power ball jackpot has yet to come forward. the winning ticket was sold at a stop and shop supermarket. the jackpot was the third biggest in power ball history. the largest prize since the raise in ticket sales. after a night of rioting in athens, greece. 45 buildings were torched and dozens of stores and restaurants were smashed. more than 120 people were injured. the rioting was sparked by the imposition of harsh new austerity measures. the goal is to save greece from bankruptcy. israel's prime minister is blaming iran for two car bomb attacks that targeted staff at

israel's embassy. one bomb went off in new deli. it hit an embassy car wounding two people. a second device was defused just in time. prime minister says israel has prevented other attacks in recent months. israel's foreign missions are now on high alert. >> a ski lodge at one of pennsylvania's most popular resorts has burned to the ground. firefighters from 13 fire departments in four counties battled those flames through the night. at woodlands. that's outside of pittsburgh. the fire broke out last night. the lodge was closed at the time. two workers inside got out safely. one firefighter suffered smoke inhalation. there's no word on the caws cause of the blaze. >> what does the uso have in common? find out why they were all at the white house today. >> but first, desert for breakfast? sounds high in the sky, but up

wheat nor breakfast to lose weight? a new study looked at two different groups of obese adults. one ate a low carbohydrate breakfast. the other had a 600 calorie breakfast, high in protein and carbs. the results showed both groups lost weight at the beginning, but the desert group kept it off. researchers think the protein likely helped the first group feel full longer and having that desert meant less likely they were going to cheat later in the day. >> for some people, it can take a long teem to heal. this is not always just an emotional phenomenon and can have physical consequences that

last. >> cheering for her son at his football game when she felt a sudden sharp pain. >> started from the middle of my chest and went to my shoulders. >> she thought she was having a heart attack, but no arteries were blocked. the 49-year-old had been under a lot of pressure and stress. >> stressful running around, i have workers in my house. >> doctors determined she was suffering from something nicknamed broken heart syndrome. a temporary heart condition that emotional stress can trigger. >> it is still a form of heart attack. the arteries are open and the pump of the heart is just really badly affected. typically almost the entire heart is affected. >> doctors at nyu are studying the condition and not sure why it happens to some people and not others. >> many patients have sky high adrenaline levels. we think that may be a way the body is expressing its reaction to stress. >> her heart muscle was damaged, but it healed with time. she now takes medication as a precaution. >> it could happen any time in

my life. you know, or it couldn't. it's always in the back of my head. always. >> broken heart syndrome affects mostly women and in many cases comes on suddenly. keeping women's hearts healthy and beating strong was the focus of today's annual affair of the heart luncheon. thousands of women of all ages, including me, was part of a sea of red that filled the ballroom at the hotel. the event is always festive and full of high fashion. but the focus is serious. women oftenignore or misunderstood the symptoms of a heart attack and wait to get to the hospital, hurting their chances of survival. >> we're talking about changing temperatures around here. >> a little bit. for the most part, you're going to be happy. and then over the weekend, we go a little back toward winter. right now, we'll take a live look outside. light winds, this is our weather cam brought to you by michael and son.

really, we're in good shape. temperatures mid 40s. the dew point is low. that's a function of how much moisture is in the air right now. so i'm a little concerned about that for our folks in cumberland for tomorrow morning as some of the moisture rolls in. not a big storm coming our way. winds out of the south, southwest. winds have calmed down. satellite picture. looking at high clouds coming in. it's going to stay dry tonight. some snow breaking out in ohio and into a portion of kentucky. this could get into the mountains, maybe hagerstown, maybe cumberland. maybe as far to the east as frederick and martinsburg by tomorrow morning at 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning. should not be a problem, but don't freak out if you see snow. 44 right now in bethesda. 45 in rockville. 44 arlington and 44 in springfield. temperatures pretty uniform. 43 in reston and 46 in sterling and 46 in college park. so, here's the deal. essentially a pretty mild week. not as cold tonight. clouds come in. keeps temperatures up a little bit. more clouds and showers on

rookie of the year a year ago n. fairness, a lot of us thought he was going to leave, but the fact he waited so long, we thought well, maybe he'll stick around and stay. the perception is bad though. just a year ago, they went to a bowl game. they won nine games. they have 25 kids that leave school. somebody has to stop the bleeding here. >> this weekend, pebble beach, tiger woods comes out and has a great three rounds and going into sunday, completely falls apart. >> kind of falls apart, but it's getting closer. he has three top three's. he's not there yet. he's not the player he was two years ago, but all that matters at the end of the day is winning majors. and even in the last two years with all the turmoil, tiger finished top four. the game is rounding into shape. phil mickelson said he is very close. nicholson and his three previous tournaments didn't finish better than 25th and he shot 64 on sunday.

activities and a home-like atmosphere. >> individuals with dementia can come here for a full range of activities and opportunity to socialize with others to find friends, which they often don't have anymore. to get medical attention if they need it, to have their meals here, to get their medications here. so it's a full service program for the person who has dementia. >> many times the care giver of patients is called the second victim. because the care giver turned upside down and that's why the family daycare center is so important. to support and educate family members of alzheimer's patients. >> center focuses on strength rather than memory limitations. they address the needs of a whole person and support.
