through an entire community. >> this is the house in west virginia that volunteers from two states were trying to save at 3:30 this morning this . this is the young teenager who died, zach whitacre. thrown from a water tanker when his truck overturned. >> everyone is still in shock and dealing with the emotions. >> page whitacre spoke to the volunteer fire rescue company draped in black. zach whitacre's grandfather was a volunteer, too, his dad, doug, was driving is beyond comprehension. >> another layer of sadness to the whole event. i can't imagine how i would feel being the father. >> it was jeff's house, the whitacre's were trying to save.

judge denied a media request to make it possible to see and evaluate things. like george huguely's video taped statement to the police. bruce, we want to know why. >> yeah, derek, it was tough to listen to the huguely video tape that was played back here on friday. we could not see it because the prosecutors put it on a tv monitor here that was visible only to the judge, the jury, the lawyers, and huguely. all the public and the media got to see was the back of the tv. what did huguely look like when he said he struggled with yeardley love, but he said he did not kill her. no peek at his eyes. the courtroom is set up so a lot of the evidence is

invisible to the public and to the media. several media outlets, including 9news now, sent a lawyer to a hearing to ask the judge to play back the evidence on a second tv monitor facing the gallery. the judge refused. he said he was sympathetic to the media, but that it was too late and too disruptive to the trial to change things now. a lawyer for the media outlets pointed to a second monitor. already in place in the courtroom and suggested it could be hooked up over the lunch hour. but the judge said no and suggested courtrooms in charlottesville have been set up this way, perhaps since thomas jefferson's time. >> now media lawyer says there is a significant first amendment issue here. he says that the public and the media have a right to see and evaluate this evidence. the prosecutor got plenty angry

about that. he says that he only is legally required to show this evidence to the judge or the jury. the media outlets they plan to appeal, they plan to take this to the virginia court of appeals and that may happen starting as soon as right this hour. about 5:00. derek. >> in the meantime, the trial goes on, bruce leshan, thank you. >> two setbacks for the prosecution in the penn state sex abuse case. the judge granted jerry sandusky's request to visit with all of his grandchildren, except the three who are currently involved in a custody dispute. the judge also denied the prosecution's request for an out of town jury to hear the case. instead, a jury from state college will be picked just as sandusky's defense lawyer wanted. the former assistant coach has been on house arrest. an investigation into how a 30-foot sign fell on i-66 over the weekend. the sign hit a pickup truck

town. now several protesters were arrested by police today after they repelled from the arlington memorial bridge. they were hanging from ropes. the sign that read free tibet. we had 500 protesters who marched on connecticut avenue from the chinese embassy ending at louisiana fayette park. they are protesting the chinese government closing tibet to foreigners after opening fire on protesters, calling for freedom and the return on the dalai lama. and china's vice president during his visit to the u.s. >> we are highly critical and suspicious that you will probably continue the same violations of human rights. we are trying to raise awareness and raise caution to the western audiences. >> and this protest has been very well organized. it has been peaceful earlier

cuts to military and domestic spending. and the renewed plea for tax hikes todd very wealthy. at $350 billion to stimulate job growth. but the forecasted $901 billion deficit does fall short of the president's goal of cutting the deficit in half by the end of his first term and the republicans already say the cuts in the president's proposal just don't go far enough. president obama unveiled that budget proposal at the campus of the northern virginia community college today. >> plan would create an $8 billion fund to help connect community college students with businesses looking to hire workers for high growth industries. >> here in american, we have the best workers and some of the fastest growing companies in the world. there's no reason we can't connect the two and places like nova are proving that we know how to do it. >> the president says the fund could train 2 million workers in healthcare, transportation, and advanced manufacturing. >> dozens of teachers

again. they say the same fate is for them. >> music icon, whitney houston was honored at the grammy's last night. fans are calling radio stations and sending record sales through the roof again. >> here at the corner of panover place, otherwise known as the strip. they are also remembering whitney houston today. it's not the 170 million albums and songs that she sold. it's not the fortune. out here, it's the pain. it's her drug addiction that they are relating to. >> she got called up young and when she did it for so long, there was no quitting. >> the voice belongs to a crack addict who knows the side of whitney houston that most of us can only imagine. >> you can't quit, because that's part of her life. she couldn't function without it. >> that's his niece.

she tried years to get him and other relatives off the drugs. >> how many times a day do you have to hit the pipe? >> every day all day. >> all day? >> all day long, whenever i get a break. you holding me up now. >> the world lost a great woman, an icon. >> mary gordon is a recovering addict in downtown washington. she says whitney houston's sudden death is topic a in sessions with clients today. >> people think it's about stop using a substance. we have areas that have to be amended and sometimes we don't have a fix or the people to help us do that. >> olivia chase, daughter of a preacher, brought up in the church, like whitney houston, a crack addict in recovery. >> doesn't matter what i have or don't have. most precious possession, sometimes, for some people is just to know that stuff will kill you. >> that stuff will kill you.

we don't know the exact cause of death of whitney houston. may not know for several weeks. want to point out the research shows that the number of people addicted to drugs and alcohol in the washington area is higher than anywhere else in the country. 11% in d.c. 9% in both maryland and virginia. they say the supply of drug, the stress and the lack of treatment facilities all play into this. >> and what the last addict said, it doesn't matter what you have, there's still something missing. back to you in the newsroom. >> tonight we are monitoring developments in three cases across our area. first, a man accused of killing an offduty maryland state trooper is on trial. testimony is underway in the case against cor kneel i cornelius williams. he is accused of killing trooper brown. he was working as a security guard at the time. the trooper has thrown williams out of the restaurant over a dispute involving an unpaid bill. >> jury selection also started

today in the case of five men. literally accused of terrorizing parts of southeast d.c. the men are accused of four shooting deaths and nine other shootings on south capital street. investigators say the five went on a retaliatory shooting spree in 2010. this lasted eight days. prosecutors added 30 counts, bringing the total to 54. police say the shooting spree ended as some young people gathered outside a house just after a friend's funeral. and it will be life in prison for a former suburban hospital worker who stabbed his boss to death. sentencing was hand down today in the case of keith little. he is convicted in december of killing brockington jr. little stabbed his boss 72 times on new year's day 2011. today, little claimed he had been railroaded by authorities and he plans to appeal. lesli. >> the obama administration has proposed a new plan to help homeowners who are under water

refinance their loans. but with historically low mortgage rates, there are millions of other borrowers who might take steps to lower their home loans. and if you previously refinanced, we examine whether it's a good move to do it again for your bottom line. >> whit and beth bought their new jersey home last may. they locked in on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage at 5%. >> i couldn't believe that interest rates would ever go any lower than they were. 5% is pretty low. >> they did go lower and months after moving in, the clays refinanced at 4 1/4%. >> we had no closing costs and ultimately what we ended up having was simply an appraisal fee and cost of applying for a mortgage. >> it's important to figure out if it's enough of a

the winner of this weekend's $336 million power ball jackpot has yet to come forward. the winning ticket was sold at a stop and shop supermarket. the jackpot was the third biggest in power ball history. the largest prize since the raise in ticket sales. after a night of rioting in athens, greece. 45 buildings were torched and dozens of stores and restaurants were smashed. more than 120 people were injured. the rioting was sparked by the imposition of harsh new austerity measures. the goal is to save greece from bankruptcy. israel's prime minister is blaming iran for two car bomb attacks that targeted staff at

my life. you know, or it couldn't. it's always in the back of my head. always. >> broken heart syndrome affects mostly women and in many cases comes on suddenly. keeping women's hearts healthy and beating strong was the focus of today's annual affair of the heart luncheon. thousands of women of all ages, including me, was part of a sea of red that filled the ballroom at the hotel. the event is always festive and full of high fashion. but the focus is serious. women oftenignore or misunderstood the symptoms of a heart attack and wait to get to the hospital, hurting their chances of survival. >> we're talking about changing temperatures around here. >> a little bit. for the most part, you're going to be happy. and then over the weekend, we go a little back toward winter. right now, we'll take a live look outside. light winds, this is our weather cam brought to you by michael and son.
