call for tax hikes on the wealthy and end tax breaks for big corporations. he is also selling $4 trillion worth of spending cuts. all designed to trim the deficit over the next decade. but the president's budget does not stand a changes in congress. republican lawmakers quickly shot down his proposals, dismissing them as bad for job creation. >> rather than treading water, he makes things worse. >> and they say his budget actually does nothing to cut the deficit. >> somebody asked me if this budget was dead on arrival. i said no, no, it's noted not dead on arrival, it's debt on arrival. >> they demand bigger spending cuts and a medicare overhaul. the budget debate is expected to drag on until after the november election. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. >> and the president's budget also calls for $25 billion in

cuts over the next 11 years to the postal service. those reductions would come from changes like ending mail deliveries on saturdays. >> the mayor of washington, d.c. is certainly applauding at least one item in president obama's new budget. language that would grand d.c. governments greater control over local budget. in short, the district would be able to spend its own money without waiting for congressional approval, which it has to do now. >> it's a huge step forward, ladies and gentlemen, in advancing our cause. >> among other things, protect the district government in the event of another federal shutdown. >> usually in a trial, the public and media can see the evidence, but that is not the case for a lot of the evidence at the uva lacrosse murder trial. and today, the judge denied a media request to make it possible for us to see and evaluate things, like george huguely's video taped statement to the cops. >> reporter: that video tape

statement from george huguely played back here, well it was wrenching just to listen to, but you could not see it. because the judge has the tv monitor positioned in such a way that all the audience, the public, and the media can see here is the back of the tv. what did huguely look like when he sobbed and told police on video tape that he struggled with yeardley love, but he did not kill her. we have no idea. no sense of the body language, no peek at the look at his eyes. the courtroom is set up so a lot of the evidence is invisible to the public and to the media. several media outlets, including 9news now, sent a lawyer, to play back the evidence facing the gallery. the judge refused. he said he was sympathetic to the media, but that it was too late and too disruptive to the

trial to change things now. a lawyer for the media outlets pointed to a second monitor already in place in the courtroom and suggested it could be hooked up over the lunch hour. but the judge said no and suggested courtrooms in charlottesville have been set up this way, perhaps since thomas jefferson's time. media lawyer robert yates says there is a significant first amendment issue here. that the public and the media have the right to see and evaluate the evidence. the media outlets are now going to the virginia court of appeals. in charlottesville, bruce leshan, 9news now. >> and two other trials got started today. in maryland, jurors heard the opening arguments in the cor kneel cornelius murder trial. june of 2010 right outside an applebees. prosecutors say the trooper thrown williams out earlier in the restaurant because of a

dispute involving an unpaid bill. >> and in washington, d.c., jury selection underway in the south capital street shootings trial. five men are accused of killing five people and injuring nine others. those men face a total of 54 charges. the jury selection could wrap up tomorrow. this particular trial is expected to last two months. a stunning tragedy in a fire fighting family is left a rural virginia community in shock tonight. 21-year-old zach whitacre was killed this morning when the tanker truck he was riding to an emergency call in west virginia flipped. his father was the one behind the wheel. >> i'm scott broom in gore, virginia. the young firefighter was zach whitacre who was on a tanker truck that rolled over hustling to get water. the driver of the truck was whitacre's father. >> it adds another layer of sadness to the whole event. i mean, i can't imagine how

that would feel. >> page whitacre, no relation to zach spoke to the fire rescue company draped in black. zach whitacre's grandfather was a volunteer here, too, that his dad, doug, was driving is beyond come prehence. this is the house in west virginia that volunteers from two states were trying to save at 3:30 this morning there are no fire hydrants down this country lane, which is why they were called from neighboring gore to truck water in. the truck overturned on u.s. route 50. as to whitaker hustled. 9news now. >> the virginia house of delegates has approved two bills that have pro-choice supporters upset. the first is a controversial person hood bill that defines life starting at conception.

the second would require all women seeking an abortion to first have an ultrasound of the fetus, however, the bill does not force women to see the image. cast final votes on both of those tomorrow. >> dozens of teachers demonstrated today in prince william county. instead of staying after to plan for the next day, they headed out along with the kids. they are protesting the superintendent's plans for no raises until the year 2016. >> we have been taking a hit for three years and informed us that we were going to take another hit to our pay for another three years, potentially five years. >> no raise. >> no raise, nothing. >> the president of the prince william education association says she is asking teachers to occupy the board of supervisor's meetings and bring their extra work there. >> well, a beautiful sunny start to the workweek topped what would make it better, would be more warmth in the atmosphere. >> i hear you. it's 50 today. above average. but good news s the winds died down a little built.

she was in the bathtub of her hotel room. >> she was under water, but not submerged. >> i have no information on that. >> the coroner has completed the autopsy on houston's body, but investigators are not speculating on what caused her death until they have results of toxicology tests. that could take another 6 to 8 weeks. houston's body will be flown to new jersey. her record label, sony is under fire for a price hike hours after houston was found dead. the british newspaper reports her greatest hits album. the price increased by 60% sunday morning. that report says that was actually caused by sony lifting the wholesale price of the album. they haven't commented about the issue. the guardian says a source told it that the wholesale price was incorrect and sony was fixing it. apple has returned that album to its original price.

pretty chilly start to the week. but winter won't stick around long. there will be a warmup. but first, a local high school volleyball player back on the court after conquering cancer. it's all possible because their trainer saw something that nobody else did. her amazing story is up next. three right lanes from route 7. that's exit number 47 to the dulles toll road. and sometime after midnight, all of 495 north will shut down temporarily. this will go on for 30 minutes. the crews will be working on the project and hopefully all of those lanes will reopen by 5:00 a.m. and the same closures will occur each night through saturday. most times it's your family doctor that encourages you to get screened for cancer, but that recommendation came from her school's athletic trainers. and as kristin fisher reports, those actions likely saved her young life. >> two years ago, maurine marsh was the only freshman on the varsity valleyball team. >> after practices, my knee would hurt a lot. >> her doctors told the 14- year-old it was growing pains. but then, her high schools trainer got a lock at her aching right knee. >> never thought in a million years it would be cancer. i noticed her patella was

offset and it didn't seem right. >> two years later, that trainer is getting a kiss from congressman, jim moran. >> thank you. you see, turns out that aching knee was cancer, bone cancer, rare and rapidly spreading. >> i was pretty shocked. i never broken a bone. i've never really been sick. so it was shock. >> after 20 weeks of chemotherapy and a full knee replacement surgery, maurine isn't just back at langly high school, she's back playing volleyball. >> come back in and go for it. it was pretty impressive. >> but equally impressive was the school support. >> we have never had a sick child before. and you helped us. >> successfully lobbied congressman moran to recognize the schools. >> i would like to recognize the administration, teachers, coaches, and athletic training staff for the compassion they

show. they caught it in time, saved her leg. she's now a straight a student and she's a star volleyballplayer and she's a survivor. >> in mcclane, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> check this out. throughout her chemotherapy, maurine stayed in school, she even had a 3.8 grade point average. she'll graduate on time may 2013. the valentines are back at walkersville elementary. the assistant principal says students can exchange valentine's tomorrow with restrictions. kids must have one for every student in the class and they can include food or candy. walkersville elementary banned valentine's last year and the school principal says romance between students had no place in elementary school. should the school have reversed that or romance between 6 to 10- year-olds over the top? send them to mailbag@wusa9.com.

you by michael and son. we're looking at temperatures downtown still in the 40s, but in the 30s, 43 officially. dew point is coming up. and the pressure 30.11 inches of mercury. that is holding steady over the past hour. satellite picture, radar combined. the system looks pretty imprezzive, but it's going to fall apart. producing some pretty good rain and thunderstorms. alabama into mississippi. a little bit of snow in southeastern missouri, not a lot. a little bit of snow. but not really going to amount to anything. and here, it's just for the time being, throwing clouds our way. the clouds are in place, we stay dry tonight. some of the moisture could get into the mountains. hagerstown west ward in the form of light snow or flurries. will not be a problem. temperatures, 46 in college park. 43 in arlington. 43 downtown. but some 30s. 37 up in gaithersburg. 39 up in columbia and looking

at 37 in reston. temperatures are falling, but not like a rock like they did last night and of course the night before when the arctic air came in. a mild week all in all. not as cold tonight. more clouds than showers tomorrow. does not have a lot of moisture with it. mild and just nice on wednesday. grab the umbrella for thursday. a little stronger system coming our way. a little more moisture. all right, late tonight if you're still out walking the dog, cloud cover. no green blob. notice a little bit of snow that went through early in the morning. that could be your morning flurry, but notice, there's no green blobs anywhere. maybe we see a sprinkle in southern maryland by this time tomorrow night. maybe we see a sprinkle in martinstown. but this is going to throw clouds our way as we go through the day on tuesday. we'll clear up nicely by wednesday morning. in fact, temperatures will be above average on wednesday. tonight, clouds on the increase. not as cold. 1 to 2 blanket night. low temperatures 26 to 34. and the winds will be light.

now tomorrow morning, again, a sprinkle or flurry possible. primarily north of town and in the mountains. no umbrella required. no shovel required either. 20s and 30s and light wind. by afternoon, mostly cloudy, mild, a few showers possible. that's about it. need a light coat. high temperatures near 50 and winds out of the south at 10. all right, we'll break it down. 28 to 36 to start. 45 to 50 at noon. maybe a sprinkle. 48 to 53 by evening. again, maybe a sprinkle. more than anything, just clouds. all right, next three days. beautiful on wednesday. 51 and we're looking at rain on thursday. but look at the temperature. 54 degrees. next seven days. another strong finish to the week. we're in the low 50s on friday. a little bit cooler or colder over the weekend. i am tucking a snow flake in there on sunday morning a. cold front approaching from the west and also area of low pressure developing from the south. right now, it's going to stay to our south.

in the mail bag tonight, we sure did not get much snow, just a light dusting. but that did not stop the local authorities from slattering the roads with salt. why would the transportation department waste the salt and the money that bought it, salting roads when there was virtually no snow and no dangerous driving conditions? i know this winter lacked any winter, but we shouldn't be wasting our resources just because we have them. karen, the short, simple answer is this. no politician was unelected because they got too many salt trucks out there and too many snowplows out ready for action. then there was this. compromise? what compromise. instead of requiring faith based organizations to sign up front for this cost, insurance companies that cover faith based organizations must include this coverage in their policies. and you got to know that faith based organizations will have
