her ex-boyfriend is tried in charlottesville for the murder. we are outside the courthouse with more information. bruce. >> reporter: yeah. it's a little tough to sit through but the prosecutors need to prove to the jurors exactly how yeardley love died so they brought in a neuro pathologist. a woman, a doctor from bc -- vcu named christine fuller. what she found was a lot of small bruises and bleeding all over the young woman's brain. she describe bruises in the middle cranial fossa over the temples on either side of yeardley love's head. she said they were consistent with either a fall from a height or a punch to the head particularly a punch into a wall or into the floor. but she said those injuries were not bad enough to kill the

uva lacrosse player. she also described bruising and bleeding in love's brain stem. that is the area of the brain that controls your breathing and your heart beat. she described them as torque or twisting injuries. caused by a sudden acceleration or deceleration of the head like it suddenly snapped back and forth. she said those injured could have caused sudden death. she never tied those injuries to a punch to the head or a slam against the floor. but you can imagine. she was also asked about cpr. one of the defense theories is that the injuries to love's brains might have been caused by a sudden rush of blood to the brain to resuscitation injuries as paramedics pumped on her chest. but this neuro pathologist said. no she saw absolutely no sign

of that and the signs of that kind of brain injury are very, very clear. cross-examination going on and we will let you know what they say later this afternoon. >> all right. we will have the latest information on our website, wusatv9.com. right now dc detectives are investigating an early morning shooting that occurred in southeast washington. they found an unidentified man with gunshot wounds to his back. this happened around 9:00 this -- 1:00 this morning near 50th street southeast. medics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital where he later died. police are looking for a suspect and a motive. we are hearing from convicted killer britney norwood for the first time. we were about to show you police video from last march. >> tired of him sexually assaulting me and made me move her car. i know where her car is. >> the footage shows norwood

choking back tears as she lied to investigators about the night she killed jana murray. norwood claimed that two men broke into the store in bethesda last march and sexually assaulted both women and killed mary. that was a lie. norwood was convicted of first- degree murder in november. she will spend her life in prison without the possibility of parole. hundreds of protestors are expected to hold a rally outside the white house today. the rally coincides with a visit from china's vice- president. four protestors were arrested yesterday as they attempted to hang a free tibet manner underneath the memorial bridge. many are outraged over china's move to seal off tibet to foreigners and journalists during a government crackdown on protestors. >> with a we are highly critical of and suspicious is that he will continue the same violations of human rights and so we are trying to do is to

raise awareness and raise caution. >> china's vice-president is on a week long diplomatic tour of the united states. new details are emerging about the final sendoff for singer whitney houston. her family says there will be no public memorial and the singer will be layed to rest in the private ceremony. allison has more. >> reporter: whitney houston fans are gathering outside a funeral home in newark, new jersey torque pay tribute to their hometown girl. >> i was really devastated because her music is just an inspiration to all of us. >> reporter: a police escort led a hearst carrying her body here overnight. the fallen super star will be layed to rest in the state where she was born and raised. >> sad she has to come home under these circumstances. >> it makes people in this area believe they can make it to stardom the way she did. >> whitney houston's family members have been struggling to plan a proper sendoff. they decided to hold her

funeral here in the church where whitney's talent first emerged when she sang in the choir as a child. the 48-year-old pop sensation was found dead saturday under water in the bathtub of a beverly hills hotel. law enforcement sources confirm to cbs news some prescription drugs were found in the room. but authorities won't speculate on what killed her until toxicology results are back. houston was one of the world's best selling artists until she started battling drugs and alcohol. but her fans are focusing on the high notes. >> i'm younger and she is older and i still love her music the passther at new hope baptist church says houston's mother sissy is in deep pain but her faith will get her through this difficult time. allison for cbs news, newark, new jersey. the l.a. coroner says that there were not a lot of prescription

appears that syria is on the brink of a civil war. today troops continue to bomb neighborhoods amid calls for united nations peace keepers to step in. the u.n.'s commissioner for human rights says the violence

is escalating. >> the longer the international community fails to take action, the more the civilian population will suffer from countless atrocities committed against them. >> the united nations estimates more than 5400 people have died since the pro democracy uprising began a year ago. now the arab league is calling on the u.n. to form a joint peacekeeping force to help end that violence. police in thailand have detained a second iranian man after a wave of bombings in bangkok. at this point, authorities are trying to connect the three bombings to recent attacks in israel and georgia. an iranian identification card was found at the scene of today's bombings. at least four people were injured. coming up next, howard and the valentine's day forecast. >> try to sweep out here right now. good deal of sunshine and temperatures warming up very

same-sex marriage supporters in virginia selected today, valentine's day, for a rally in naifer of legalizing those marriages in the common wealth. virginia's constitution limits marriage to one man and one woman. two women from fairfax county will lead the protest today by trying to obtain a marriage license. karen rasmussen and barb brin have been together for 26 years. they met while serving in the navy. both realized their request for a marriage license will be rejected but they hope to start changing minds in the common wealth. >> scales are tipping and we don't want virginia no be the last of all the states to recognize marriage equality. the scales are really tipping all over the country. >> a "washington post" poll done last year shows 47% of virginia residents favor legalizing same-sex marriage.

43% are opposed. now to maryland. supporters of legalizing the state of -- rallied yesterday in annapolis. the group, equality maryland, lobbied lawmakers to try to win over their support. governor martin o'malley wants to legalize same-sex marriage this year. it was rejected last year and supporters admit they are still a few votes short in the legislature. u.s. senate is celebrating valentine's day but instead of candies and a heart-shaped box, visitors are getting a lesson on how to take care of their heart. >> reporter: volunteers are standing by to show you a little love this valentine's day offering free screenings to keep your heart healthy. >> tim is working with the sister to sister foundation for six months and already lost nearly 30 pounds even at age 28, knew it was time for a change. >> sort of rubbed off on me and

>> irene is doing a great job with that organization. >> all she has done over the years. >> happy valentine's day to you. >> nice, red. >> i like your tie, too. you steal the cake obviously. weather-wise today will try to steal the cake this afternoon. it's gorgeous. sunshine which has developed. it looks like a slim, slim chance for shower and in a couple of spots and other than that i think our next best chance of rain will hold off until thursday. a look at the day planther afternoon. and perhaps i should have depicted a little bit more sunshine the way it's going as temperatures are going to shoot into the low 50s. we get enough sun and sun will make a run for it, 55 this afternoon and especially southwest of town. 7:00we are back in the 40s with mostly cloudy skies. winds south at about 5 to 10 miles per hour. southeast tonight at 45 by 9:00. after midnight and after we lose this slim threat of a shower, that's when we will see sky goes partly cloudy. weather headlines just that isolated shower or two possible

through the evening. i think most of us will not see anything until thursday. sunny and mild wednesday. then rain becomes more likely thursday at least some showers moving in and that will get us back cooler. and then the weekend. what's going to happen sunday? some of the models are suggesting a possible coastal storm in february and coastal storms, that means return to winter. also possible that storm slides south and east of us and leaves us alone. so going to watch it. just want to let you know it's a possibility. not etched in stone. see the moisture we are looking at. most of us has not reached the ground. west of the mountains is where we see rain and snow across parts of ohio and that's reaching the ground and these amounts are still fairly light and as you look closer in we have a little batch that passed through southern maryland and up toward our north and west and a live doppler hd, finding a few echos through martinsburg and down between cambridge and

oxford over toward salisbury. we are looking pretty good and temps into the low 50s. manassas at 52. tap-ic 52. it's been the mid-40s, martinsburg and winchester and here in d.c. we have 48 degrees and look at the sunshine on our weather camera. a decent amount of sunshine out there. it was cloudy on the hour but a lot of breaks in the overcast and feels like 43 with the south wind at ten miles per hour. the dew point is 24 so it was good. the rain and heavier stuff across georgia into extreme southern south carolina. even that's dissipating. the moisture off to the north and west will stay mainly north and west of us so as we look at the future cast we are in good shape. other than that slight threat of a shower this evening and one or two spots, this is going to come through us and we will clear out after midnight and generally sunny day tomorrow and then another system comes with those rain showers by thursday. and let's break down the forecast. today 52 degrees. partly to mostly cloudy. that slim chance of a shower. tonight we are in the 30s but

half and half. it's like a pink drink. >> it's nice for your sweetheart. >> exactly. we will take one and a half ounces of grey goose pear. >> i love grey goose pear. i don't drink it often. not often. >> we will take a half ounce of a pom granite liqiewr. we will -- liquor. we will take rose scented simple syrup and we will take about one and a half ounces of that and then we will take a little bit of half and half. >> half and half. uh-oh. >> exactly. >> the richness. >> that's the richness. >> and a little lemon juice. >> and a little tiny bit of lemon juice. just a touch. >> and in order for us to make this nice and frothy, we have to take the strainer spring off of the strainer. and stick it in there with the others. and it gives you a little bit of extra little bit of extra
