a.m. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. we're glad you're joining us. that's what you get when you join us on the morning show. here's monika samtani. she'll have traffic momentarily. we've got a good day ahead. not as good as that story but a good day nonetheless for february. sunshine will be out and temperatures will climb into the mid-50s. average high 47 degrees. once again it's been much of the case this winter we'll be above average. sunshine. we have a few clouds early. by noon 50. by 5:00 51. right now 42 and mostly cloudy with a high around 55 degrees. notice some temperatures have dipped into the 30s. mid-30s there up in frederick at 35 and manassas at 36. we're still 42. had the little rain shower action after a little sun yesterday afternoon. that's all raced up toward new england. but to the west now, this side, we've got some rain entering areas in the western tennessee valley coming from the mississippi valley. that's going to head our way for tomorrow.

probably not getting here till mid- to late morning. temps this afternoon still mid- 40s up north but most of us low to mid-50s this afternoon and fredericks, culpeper, you might make a shot toward the upper 50s with the sunshine. monika has dried her eyes and she's here now with a look at time saver traffic. >> still feeling a little sappy. that was amazing. not too shabby outside. things looking great. if you're planning come in from the west side of town, i'm happy to say from leesburg through ashburn, the dulles toll road, 66 is looking good as well, all the way from centreville to nutley street which is what i'll show you if you're planning to head on the inbound side. here's what it looks like at nutley street heading for the beltway. let's go back over to our maps and this time we'll head over to the south side of town. 395 coming up from springfield looking like you're going above the speed limit all the way up the line to the 14th street bridge. we'll go to our vdot camera here. no problems to report at duke

street up to the 14th street bridge. coming up in my next report, we'll go to maryland at 5:10. metro is preparing to admit it bears some blame for the deadly red line crash according to the washington examiner. >> nine people died back in june 2009 when one train slammed into the back of another. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at a memorial to those crash victims. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike. it was a devastating crash that really changed the lives of hundreds of families here and hundreds of metro riders who ride on the metro daily. we're on the new hampshire avenue overpass and this overlooks the crash scene where many of these family members lost their lives. i was here last summer when the victims' families posted these pictures. you can see one for mother of six anna hernandez and several other pictures, flowers and signs that have been here for nearly a year memorializing

these victims. now a bit, just a small bit of justice for these families. metro today we're told and three equipment manufacturers have reportedly settled seven of the nine death cases plus several injury cases and according to court documents filed monday, they will, quote, stipulate to liability at the four remaining trials. no word on cash payouts to the families but according to a metro spokesperson, it's $5 million insurance deductible should cover costs. the admission comes two years after the national transportation safety board released scathing reports that repeated ignored problems led to the deadly crash. >> metro was on a collision course long before this accident. >> this accident is a classic expaferl of an organization -- example of an organizational accident. >> reporter: metro under new management now has worked with the n.t.s.b. to fix many of the problems. there's still a long way to go but they have made some

improvements. we'll have more on what they're doing to make metro safer coming up in a half-hour. back to you, mike, andrea. >> delia goncalves live outside the fort totten metro station. thank you. a georgetown man accused of strangling his 91-year-old wife will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. the judge says right now 47- year-old albrecht mooth is not ifity to stand trial. police are investigating three more street robberies in upper northwest washington now. they all hammed monday and in two cases a gun was used. the robberies happened this time near river road and 46th street along wisconsin avenue in friendship heights and on warren street. police say in all three atabs there were three robbers wearing ski masks and driving a dark colored vehicle. investigators are already

looking into at least half a dozen other robberies in the area. the montgomery county school board has approved the superintendent's $2.13 billion budget request. superintendent joshua star says this budget allows the school system to keep up with the growing enrollment while meeting the minimum requirement to fund students' education at the same level. now the school budget goes to the county council and ike leggett for final approval. president obama's budget proposal does not include any new funding for d.c.'s private school voucher program. d.c. is the only place in the country where federal tax dollars subsidize private school tuition. students can receive up to $12,000 a year. back in 2009 congress agreed to phase out the program. however, there's new talk republicans might try to restore that funding. five minutes after 5:00. good morning if you're just joining us. time for the latest your money report. >> jessica doyle is here with today's headlines. good morning. >> good morning. we've got a global rally going

on right now and something obviously wall street would like to jump on later today. that's as new developments as greece marches closer to aid for its economic problems. on wall street stocks, kind of an "ah" session after a dispinting re-- disappointing retail sales report was released. knack zach was flat. -- nasdaq was flat. house and senate negotiators have reached a tentative deal on renewing the payroll tax cuts. it saves the average worker about 20 bucks a week. the bill could be on the president's desk as early as this week. the deal would extend the tax cut through the end of the year. jobless benefits would also be renewed as well. and doctors would be saved from a big cut in their medicare payments but the plan would add to the deficit. this weekend will be a good one for buying appliances in maryland. that's because it is tax free weekend for energy star appliances. we're talking your air conditioners, washer and

dryers, solar water heaters, frigs, dehumidifierers, programmable thermostats and cop pact fluorescent light bulbs. -- compact fluorescent light bulbs. those will save you the 6% sales tax. get it while you can. >> what do you have for us in the next half-hour? >> a big change in the gaming world that has a lot of people pretty excited. we'll talk about that coming up. the fda issues a warning about fake versions after cancer drug. that story coming up. plus, the president takes the first lady to a northern virginia restaurant for valentine's day. more on that coming up. ahead in sports, the wizards did something overnight that they haven't done in ten months. stick around for that.

watch out for the accident after this point on the showedder but causing a bit after slowdown getting by. more on maryland roadways at 5:17. making news now at 5:10, whitney houston's family has decided to hold a private funeral service this saturday in her hometown of newark, new jersey. new jersey's governor has ordered state flags to fly at half staff saturday. autopsy results on the 48-year- old entertainer expected to take up to eight weeks. food and drug administration is warning doctors now and patients about a counterfeit version of the drug evass continue, an injectable medicine used to treat cancer. the counterfeit version is labeled as avastin but does not contain the drug's active ingredients. the president leaves on a road trip. last week he snuck in a valentine's dinner old town, alexandria. the president and first lady dined at vermillion restaurant. it was offering a special four-

it's coming up on 5:14 this wednesday morning. the forecast is like a roller coaster. where are we? >> today is a ridge. got a trough tomorrow. another ridge on friday. we've got sunshine expected and temperatures above average. back in the mid-50s. take a nice long walk with the dog again this afternoon. she was a happy camper sniffing everything and feeling almost spring like out there. >> loving the forecast. >> yeah. you're going to get outside and love it as well. this morning you'll neat the jackets. we start in the 30s and 40s. about 35 to 45 on the bus stop forecast. we have some clouds around. i expect them to be breaking up some over the next several hours. 7:00 on the nice for the sunrise. sunset 5:45. we'll have a good deal of sunshine today. i think we'll be partly to mostly sunny. by noon sunshine and 50. a little bit of a breeze. northwest winds 10 to 15. if you're going to be outside, wind breaker, sweat shirt, that sort of thing.

by 8:00 still clear, in the mid- 40s but the clouds will return overnight tonight and some rain will return on thursday. this morning we're say going bye to yesterday's little system. clouds now. it's going to pull out of here the next few hours and that's why i'm expecting a good deal of sunshine. up north upper 30s from hagerstown, cumberland 37. oakland with plenty of snow on the ground they're in the upper 20s. down south fredricksburg is 40. here in washington this morning we've got 42 degrees. looking outside on our michael & son weather camera, lots of clear skies. mainly dark at the white house this morning. the washington monument in the upper right. 42. feeling like 38 thanks to the north wind at 6. a bit after windchill. dew point still creeping up at 31 degrees. got a lot of action on the weather maps. another storm on the west coast. storm in the middle of the country and we're saying goodbye to the third storm. it's this one right here from oklahoma and texas moving in toward the mississippi valley. this is going to be thursday's

rain maker. there's a little bit of wintry precip on the northern edge of this. just not enough cold air. that's really been the case most of the winter. not enough cold air for us to get snow. we have seen a couple of bouts here and there. sunday, though, we may see a coastal develop. if it slides south of us, no biggie. if it comes up the coast, that's a different story. this afternoon sunny, pleasant, mid-50s. a bit breezy. clouds thicken up overnight tonight toward tomorrow morning. expect a cloudy start to your thursday but a dry start. as we get into the middle of the day and especially the afternoon and evening this is where we're going to see the rain showers. i think the evening rush hour on thursday unfortunately will be a wet one but a dry thursday morning. then this is out of here so we're left with pretty good weather by friday morning. partly to mostly sunny skies. then we just watch and see how things develop for sunday. again nothing etched in stone. could be a coastal. could slide off to the south.

avenue. back over to the maps. this time to 95 in from baltimore. you're fine. bw parkway same story. there was a minor incident on the inbound side of route 50 before the beltway. really before 197. things are looking great there now. it should be on the shoulder with the lanes open. we'll take a live look a little further south and here's what it looks like if you're coming south of the beltway south on the beltway at route 4 pennsylvania avenue over to the wilson bridge and into alexandria. all lanes are open. no problems to report at this time. coming up in my next report, we'll go to virginia at 5:38. just about 5:31 now. the prosecution is starting to out up a list of experts at the uva lacrosse murder trial. >> testimony ran late last night as prosecutors were wrapping up their case. one expert testified that george huguely and yeardley love had each other's d.n.a. under their fingernails and a neurologist described the fatal

injuries to yeardley's brain stem. a sterling man is suing a former loudoun county sheriff's deputy. video from a patrol car camera appears to show terry daniel hitting carlos garcia from behind during a november 2009 arrest. garcia was knocked out and his lawyers say he suffer add traumatic brain injury with intermittent memory loss. the sheriff's department and former deputy have not commented on the lawsuit. metro has taken some responsibility in the june 2009 crash that killed nine people. delia goncalves is live at the memorial to the victims on the new hampshire avenue overpass. >> reporter: good morning, andre ya. the overpass overlooks the -- andrea. the overpass overlooks the crash site where these victims lost their lives. you can see these posters and signs have been here for a

while. it's a reminder to us all of the lives lost that fateful day. the trains involved in that deadly crash were among the oldest in the fleet, the 1000 series cars. the national transportation safety board warned metro well before the crash about the old and dangerous trains that metro always said they were too expensive to replace. what a price we paid for the lives shattered from what the ntsb said was metro's negligence. since then, though, metro has changed its management, has taken a hundred measures to fix problems, including track repair and circuit replacement though we can tell you the 1000 series cars, the old ones involved in the crash won't be completely replaced until next year. metro is operating the trains on manual mode only. this crash occurred when the trains were on automatic mode and the brakes and the warning system failed.

coming up in a half-hour, i'm let you know what the admission and the cost payout to the families of these victims may mean for riders of metro currently. we'll have that in a half-hour. back to you. >> delia goncalves with that live update. tonight a visitation will be held for alexandria paramedic joshua weissman. he died last week responding to a car fire on 395 when he fell off an overpass into four-mile run. the visitation is from 5:00 p.m. until midnight at the everly wheatley funeral home on west braddock road. surrounding jurisdictions will cover emergency calls in alexandria so his colleagues can attend. we'd like to give you a heads up. tonight you might hear some artillery fire in northern virginia. the old guard is scheduling cannon fire drills at arlington cemetery from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. the booms are so loud, we usually get concerned phone calls asking what's happening. that is what's happening.

once again some old guard drills at arlington national cemetery. at 5:34 we have another your money report for you. >> jessica is back with a consumer warning for cancer patients n. is scare -- patients. this is scary. >> this is potentially a serious problem. what we're talking about is the best selling cancer drug in the nation. now the maker of avastin is warning doctors and patients about counterfeit vials of the product being distributed in the u.s. tests show they do not contain the key ingredient in avastin. it's used for colon, lung, brain cancers. the company says the counterfeit products do not have genentech printed on the packaging or a six-digit lot number with no letters. at this point unclear how much of the counterfeit product was distributed in the u.s. or whether it's caused any harm gldz more americans were late on their mortgage payments in the last three months of 2011.

a credit reporting agency says a little more than 6% of mortgage holders were behind in their payments by 60 days or more. analysts are saying the delinquency rate will not get any better until housing prices recover. switching gears for you. the angry birds are flocking to facebook. the popular game just debuted on the social network. 500 million folks have already downloaded the game devices to their smartphone. the facebook version will allow folks to pay to get more birds or other game extras as well as sharing your scores with others via your news feed. angry birds is very popular on my phone when my daughter steals it from me along with the new game she's obsessed with "cut the rope" which apparently is hot with kids right now. >> haven't seen that one. >> leave it all to the gamers there. >> thanks, jess. >> sure thing. coming up, we will tell you about some of the bills that actually survived crossover day in virginia. plus, nearly 20 dogs have

busy. in maryland governor martin o'malley has introduced a phase- in of a 6% sales tax on gas. and the bill to legalize same- sex marriage is now headed to the full house. in virginia tuesday was crossover day. now the house and senate may only consider bills already passed by the other chamber. virginia's house passed two restrictive antiabortion bills. the senate passed legislation to require drug screening of welfare recipients but rejected a bill to make it easier to dismiss public school teachers. the washington animal rescue league is now caring for nearly 20 dogs that were rescued in mississippi. the dogs were found in filthy conditions. at this point they've already received the emergency medical attention they need and the vets at the rescue league at the medical center in northwest washington are going to be caring for them. once they're healthy and they undergo behavior evaluations, the dogs should be ready for adoption soon. >> we just saw on the westminster dog show a dog that had been cruelly treated made it to best in his breed. >> i don't know that.

few minutes as staffers get there. we've got a storm system here over texas and oklahoma moving in toward the mississippi valley. this is almost a repeat of a couple of days ago but this is going to be tomorrow's rain maker as it moves in our direction. i do think the moisture, at least the clouds get here well in advance of the rain. with some luck we're going to be dry for the morning commute tomorrow but the evening commute looks wet. looking at our high temperatures today, we've got low 50s up to the north. great falls 53. college park gets up to about 54. to the west in fairfax county, fairfax 55. leesburg 54. manassas, you're going to top off at about 56 degrees with a good deal of sunshine and just as i said earlier, that northwest wind 10 to 15. so the next three days, 55 today. we're back in the 30s to near 40 tonight. tomorrow those clouds are actually going to roll in overnight so the rain develops. i think it's dry for the morning commute. by midday into the afternoon some of the rain moves in. afternoon rain. 50 degrees. friday we're back to 50 but

santorum has surged past mitt romney in the latest cbs news- "new york times" poll. he leads romney 30% to 27%. 9 wants you to know fairfax police have charged five juveniles with public drunkenness. this happened last friday night following a basketball game between languageley and mclean high. four of the kids who were arrested were at mclean high school. the fifth at a nearby fast food restaurant. there's no word at this point what punishment these students will get but according to the students rights and responsibilities booklet for fairfax county, a fires-time violation for possessing or being under the influence of alcohol shall result in a suspension from school for a minimum of five days and maximum of ten days and a suspension for 30 calendar days for all student activities.

still mostly cloudy skies with temps in the 30s and 40s this morning. you'll need the jacket when you get going early but we're going to have a nice afternoon. by 9:00 mostly sunny, temperatures getting into the upper 30s and low 40s. as we approach lunch time, i think we're going to be right around the 50-degree mark. we'll head into the afternoon. lots of sunshine and temperatures are going to be into the low 50s, maybe 55 or so for the high. might even be a little warmer than the 51 at 3:00. by driving home still looking good. temperatures around 50. there's a new book out that claims the french do a better job parenting than americans. >> the book is called bringing up bebe. peggy directs the french maternal school in georgetown. she says the french believe they can learn self-control much better than americans do. french children are expected to find ways to amuse themselves and wait for meals to be
