and the now surging rick santorum. polls show the michigan contest turned into a neck and neck battle and if the state were the bailout of the auto industry were a key issue. susan mcginnis has more. >> rick santorum signed autographs in michigan. he'll spend a second day in the state trying to build on his lead. santorum is using michigan, the state where mitt romney grew up, to launch an attack on romney's lack of consistency. >> governor romney supported the bailout of wall street and decided not to support the bailout of detroit. >> my feeling was that we should not support, the government should not be involved in bailouts, period. >> romney defended his position thursday that the auto industry should have been helped through bankruptcy. >> long may they rule the world. >> santorum surged in the polls campaigning as a conservative alternative to romney. in ohio, the former

massachusetts governor said he is a true conservative. >> i worked in business 25 years. you can't do what i do and not be a fiscal conservative. and so my conservatism is to the core. >> as romney and santorum battle for michigan, newt gingrich said he's hoping for a big showing on super tuesday. ten states are up for grabs next month, including georgia. gingrich will campaign there today and admits, while he served in georgia as a congressman for ten terms, he's not sure he'll pull off a victory. >> given this kind of a year, ho knows? romney could o lose michigan, santorum could lose pennsylvania. who knows what will happen. >> ron paul is trying to make his move for the nomination with strong showings in caucus states. he'll campaign in washington state today. terrell, the next scheduled debate in i can't gentleman has been canceled after romney and ron paul said they won't attend and santorum said he probably won't attend. terrell, so you know, we're in

a goodman and philanthropist. president obama is out west with stops in california and washington. mr. obama was at a fundraiser in san tran fran last night. today he'll visit the boeing plant to talk about u.s. exports. earlier, he praised congress for extending the payroll tax cut. he said leaders of both parties have done the right things for your families and economies that will prevent a tax hike on 160 million working americans. this is real money that will make a real difference in people's lives. >> two fighters were scrambled when mr. obama was aboard his helicopter in los angeles. he intercepted a plane that turned out to be carrying a load of marijuana. president's marine chopper landed safely at the airport for his flight to san francisco. the pilot of the intercepted plane is in jail facing local charges. oh, flying high in the sky.

cbs "moneywatch" time on a friday. signs of a recovering economy in the u.s. are sending stocks higher here and around the world. funny how that word keeps coming up. ashley morrison? good morning. >> terrell, you can't stop yourself. good morning to you too. the batch of good news for investors came thursday morning when the labor department said the number of people seeking unemployment benefits sank to the lowest level in almost four years. last week saw the fewest number of claims since march of 2008. six months before financial collapse. the commerce department delivered positive data on the housing and construction market. housing starts were up 1.5% in december. the numbers show growing confidence amongst homebuilders. home construction is expected to add to economic growth for the first time since 005. that data is fueling markets overseas. tokyo's nikkei gained 1.5% and

hang seng added 1%. on wall street, the dow jones had one of the strongest days of the year adding 123 points. it's at the highest level since 2008 and less than 100 points from 13,000. the nasdaq was also up 44. meanwhile, two years from bailout and bankruptcy, general motors posted the biggest ploft in its history. it sernd $7.6 billion last year. the company will share some of the profit with union employees. more than 47,000 blue collar workers will be getting checks for $7,000. andaman da knox has a book deal in place. it's worth $4 million she was convicted and later acquitted. she was freed last year after spending four years in prison. terrell, that will be an interesting book. >> we'll check it out. ashley morrison in new york. to the battle over same sex marriage. new jersey is the latest state

where lawmakers approved gay and lesbian marriage. they're facing a fight from high-profile governor chris christie. the bill had been approved bit state senate but governor christie wants the issue put to a popular vote. >> i will veto it quickly and then get down to the business of do they care about the issue or the political theater. they became the seventh state to recognize same sex marriage. it's never been approved in a public referendum. at the united nations the general assembly overwhelmingly voted for a resolution calling on syrian president bashar assad to leave. the resolution charges the syrian government is involved in systematic violations of human rights. they're waging a deadly battle with opposition groups. they say the opposition is get help from al qaeda. david martin has that part of the story. >> in syria, the arab spring is turning into a nightmare. not only are the forces of

president assad killing thousands of civilians in an attempt to crush the uprising, but now as director of national intelligence james clapper testified, the opposition trying to overthrow the regime includes some of america's worst enemies. >> we believe that al qaeda and iraq is extends its reach into syria. >> that said, defense secretary panetta, makes a bad situation worse. >> our concerns, which were large to begin with because of the situation, deteriorating situation in syria, that the situation there has become that much more serious as a result of that. >> the opposition also includes thousands of ordinary syrian citizens taking to the streets. but al qaeda showed its hand with bombings in damascus. >> both of which are tar getted against security and intelligence buildings and had all the earmarks of an al

a high security prison. he was sentenced yesterday in detroit. danielle nottingham reports. the nigerian man who tried to set off a bomb on a plane over detroit on christmas day in 2009 will spend the rest of his life behind bars. umar farouk abdul-mutallab called it a day of victory when he learned his sentence. he learned his fate four months after admitting the failed terror attack was a suicide mission. >> al qaeda has lost once again. america has won once again. we always do. >> during thursday's hearing, prosecutors played a videotape showing the explosion that could have happened if the bomb had worked. an attorney appointed to help abdul-mutallab read a statement from the bomber's family. >> we strongly appeal to the american justice department to review the life sentence. >> but attorneys for the u.s. government argued abdul-mutallab attempted to kill 289 people and if released shall he's likely to

try another suicide mission. when he pled guilty last october, abdul-mutallab said his explosive laden underwear was a "blessed weapon to avenge muslims killed around the world." he admitted that he was inspired by a muslim cleric who was killed last year. abdul-mutallab is expected to certificate his sentence in colorado at the federal super max prison where other convicted terrorists are already behind bars. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. we'll take a quick break. up next, your weather forecast and in sports, duke gets a big scare on their home court. we'll show you how they pulled it out. feel the power my young friend. mmm! gary carter. an 11-time allstar in 19 seasons. carter played mostly for the expose and mets before retiring in 1992. nicknamed kid for his exuberant style. he drove the mets to a world series championship in 1986. he hit 324 home runs and was inducted into the hall of fame in 2003. gary carter died yesterday of brain cancer in west palm beach florida. he was 57 years old. worry about getting dirty.ncert [ mom ] oh, how cute. beachflorida. he was 57 years old. ,florida. he was 57 years old. beach, florida. he was 57 years old.

the public will be kept well away from the church. >> whitney houston fans can still get close to the church where her private funeral will be held. come saturday, the plan is to keep everyone, including the media several blocks away from the star studded event. police will close down the streets around the new hope baptist church disappointing many fans. >> we was looking forward to at least listening to the services and, you know, being a part of it. because she a part of us. >> houston's godmother, aretha franklin and fellow grammy winner, stevie wonder are scheduled to sing. clive davis will be among the speakers. among those invited, kevin costner, houston's co-star in the bodyguard. cousin dionne warwick, singer alicia keys and oprah winfrey. her husband of 15 years, bobby brown, is also on o the list according to her publicist who surveyed the church thursday. fans we talked with say brown should be there. >> i think he should be allowed

here's monika samtani. she's going to cheer us up this morning in her orange and howard bernstein. an interesting few days. >> your week might be ending. i don't think mine is. sunday could get interesting. it does look like some snow is on the way. still a little early to know if it's going to be a little or more than a little. we've got some fog this morning, especially from d.c. and points south. 41 degrees with the fog at reagan national. mostly sunny and breezy day. highs 50 to 55 with a noontime temp of 49 and a 5:00 p.m. temperature of a 50 degrees. dense fog advisory for much of the reasonable. in the northern neck it expires at 5:00 a.m. a weak front coming through right now. when the fronts pass, visibilities are improving but ahead of the front, visibility down to a quarter mile in manassas and annapolis. so no visibility in culpeper right now. a lot of these areas south and

montgomery county police are the scene of this crash right now. they're diverting you off on to connecticut avenue. so i'm going to show you a map and tell you your options right now. i have a feeling this may be there for a while. if you decide to head on the southbound side of connecticut avenue, you can take that over to east west highway. if you decide to go north on connecticut, you can take plyers mill road over to georgia avenue and work your way back around to the beltway. the inner loop of the beltway completely blocked off with this serious tractor-trailer crash that happened just before 3:00 this morning. i'll show you a live picture out in maryland. again, if you're planning to head near connecticut avenue or georgia avenue, i think that's going to be your alternate routes to head south on georgia back on to the beltway. i'll keep you posted on this situation throughout the morning and my next report is at 4:39. back to you. >> thank you. see you then. we begin with breaking news n. is a house fire in prince george's county. two children were hurt, one of them critically, a 3-year-old. the other child is 9 years old. the flames broke out about 2:00

this morning on hill mar drive near surry square lane. we have a crew on the way to the scene and will have more in about half an hour. a workplace argument turned deadly after an immigration agent pulled the gun on his boss. the gunman was facing disciplinary action when he pulled out his weapon and opened fire. one person was shot and the unidentified gunman was killed. >> all the police are on the street. it was so scary. >> the agent who was shot is expected to survive. the house and senate are expected to vote today on a deal that would extend the payroll tax cut through the end of the year. that means your paycheck will stay the same and not shrink. the tax break will continue to save 160 million americans about $20 to $80 a month
