the president promised to sign the extension as soon as it passes. gambling at national harbor? prince george's county executive rashern baker is expressing support for a high end casino there. maryland lawmakers would have to pass legislation to allow the casino. voters would also have to approve the idea in a referendum. if approved it would become the sixth gaming parlor in maryland. coming up at 6:30, we'll talk live to prince george's county's executive about the idea. turning now to the republican presidential race this morning. g.o.p. hopeful rick santorum is trying to capitalize on his recent surge in the polls. >> he's targeting mitt romney in his home state. >> reporter: rick santorum signed autographs as he worked for votes in michigan. he'll spend a second day in the state trying to build on his lead. santorum is using michigan, the state where mitt romney grew up, to launch an attack on romney's lack of consistency.

>> governor romney supported the bailout of wall street and decided not to support the bailout of detroit. my feeling was that we should not support, the government should not be involved in bailouts, period. >> reporter: thursday romney defended his position that the auto industry should have been helped through bankruptcy. >> long may they rule the world. >> reporter: santorum has surged in the polls campaigning as a conservative alternative to romney. but in ohio the former massachusetts governor said he is a true conservative. >> i worked in business 25 years. you can't do what i do and not be a fiscal conservative. and so my conservatism is to the core. >> reporter: as romney and santorum battle for michigan, newt gingrich says his campaign is looking for a big showing on super tuesday. ten states are up for grabs in that contest next month, including georgia. gingrich will campaign there today and admit while he served in georgia as a congressman for ten terms, he's not sure he'll

pull off a victory. >> given this kind of a year, who knows. romney could lose michigan. santorum could lose pennsylvania. who knows what's going to happen. >> reporter: ron paul is trying to make his move for the nomination with strong showing in caucus states. he'll campaign in washington state today. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> ron paul took second place in the maine caucuses earlier this month and that state is expected to revise the results because of a few errors but officials in maine say they don't expect the outcome to change. mitt romney should hold on to his win there. singer whitney houston will be laid to rest tomorrow in a private ceremony. and it could get a little ugly. members of a controversial westborough baptist church say they're going to protest the funeral. they contend houston's death is a result of her failure to spread christianity. the 48-year-old singer was found dead in los angeles in a hotel bathtub saturday night. westborough baptist church is known for its radical demonstrations at the funerals

of soldiers. you can watch whitney houston's funeral tomorrow at noon on our website. it will be streamed on wusa9.com. whit any houston's former -- whitney houston's former husband bobby brown took the stage last night with his band the new edition. he didn't appear tuesday night for a cincinnati performance. instead he went to los angeles to console his daughter following whitney houston's death. to the latest on the george huguely murder trial. we might see final witness testimony in the case today and closing arguments by tomorrow. testimony was cut short yesterday because one of the defense lawyers was sick. george huguely is accused of murdering his former girlfriend yeardley love back in 2010 when both of them were students at uva in charlottesville. a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in maryland appears to be on hold at this point. according to "the washington post," the debate on the measure was cut short last night. it turns out a delegate who supports the bill is now scheduled to have surgery later

today. that makes the vote uncertain, especially since the two sides of the issue are so evenly split in this. supporters admit they are a couple of votes short of the 71 needed to pass the bill. last year a similar bill failed in the house of delegates after it was already approved by the senate. new jersey's governor is promising to veto a same-sex marriage bill that passed in the state assembly. right now the house and the senate do not have enough votes to override the veto. chris christie wants the voters to decide on the issue in a referendum. six states and the district recognize gay marriage now. washington state's new gay marriage law is expected to take effect coming up in june. we have an update on the d.c. liquor store accused of selling to underage teens. 9 news now first exposed teens buying booze in northwest washington on february 1. d.c.'s alcohol regulators, the agency called abra say they tried and failed to conduct its own underage purchasing at the store and that their

investigation continues. the store is still open, but montgomery county police tell 9news just last friday they busted two teens crossing the city line without alcohol from town square market. >> ended up following a car with two people back into maryland and they were two 19- year-olds who had purchased or had purchased two bottles of liquor. >> sergeant white also tells 9news that over the course of five nights in december they issued at least 36 alcohol citations to minors who purchased booze at town square market and crossed into montgomery county. d.c. police were informed about the citations according to white who says he was told the information was then passed on to abra. prosecutors reportedly want former prince george's county executive jack johnson to pay his criminal fine upfront rather than installments after he's released from prison n. december johnson was fined $100,000 and sentenced to more than seven years in prison for extorting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from

connecticut avenue. i'll have details on that situation coming up in my next report. back to you. >> thank you, monika. it is time for the first your money segment of the morning. >> jessica is here with good news for friday. >> good morning. wall street, the dow looking pretty good. we're within a hundred points of a 13,000 level. that's good stuff. we saw nice rally yesterday. sent the blue chips to their highest level sains may 2000 -- since may 2008 and that was thanks in part to some encouraging economic news. asian stocks on the plus side as well. the dow stands at 12,904. it added 123 points in trading yesterday. the nasdaq rose by 44 and the s&p 500 was up by 14. >> the job market and housing sector are looking a bit better these days. the labor department says new applications for jobless benefits have dipped to their lowest level in nearly four years. and housing starts last month nearly match add three-year high.

part of the rebound in home construction is thought to be linked to the unusually warm winter weather we've been enjoying. this january was the fourth warmest in more than a century of record keeping. and a consumer alert for parents this morning. children's playground slides that contributed to more than a dozen fractured bones on small children have been recalled. the consumer product safety commissioner are recalling a slide known as the slalom glider. it lacks a transition platform on the top and sides of the chute causing some children to fall when moving from the ladder to the slide. they were sold nationwide to schools and other facilities between 2006 and 2011. >> what's it called again? >> the slalom glider from landscape structures. if you have one of these, just take it down. >> i'm going to check the brand. i'm not sure what the brand is. thank you. >> you've got it. you will want to hear howard's forecast coming up for the weekend.

. good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 4:44 this friday morning. going to be a good day today. >> yes, we have a little bit of fog. breezy. good day tomorrow. sunday if you're a snow lover it may be a good day. we're talking about the threat of snow is growing. >> where? you've been saying the threat of snow about where? >> in the north of town of the areas north and south. a lot depends on the track which is still not concrete. you go far enough north, you might be too far away from the moisture. maybe just south of us or maybe just north of us.

that's one of the things we'll find out as we get closer. let's get you started with the details as we have them at this time. talking about the coastal storm. if you have plans tomorrow, maybe going to take your loved one out for valentine's day a little late, do it. keep it. we'll start as rain likely south and east and north and west may stay all snow. any rain changing over to snow likely midday on sunday. critical times will be much of the day on sunday once we get into the late morning through the evening hours on the first part of the night. this thing slow enough it may even be problematic overnight sunday night. i know what you're thinking about monday morning, kids. yeah, maybe. let's talk about the d.c. snow checklist. got the cold, the moisture. three things we need for a good snowstorm. cold is coming up. marginal but enough cold air in place that i think we can do this. the moisture, i think we'll have plenty of moisture around. the only question we have with the storm track, that's looking better today than maybe yesterday. we'll see if this comes up. if we were going to have the

blizzard of the century, you would see everything pegged on high. doesn't look like that now but the ingredients are coming together for us to get our best snow of the season. we've had 2 inches so far the entire season. it won't take much to beat that. at the bus stop areas of fog. 36 to 44. your sunrise at 6:57. as far as our day planner today, mid-40s by 9:00. it will be breezy at times. around 50 at noon with a northwest wind. by 5:00 50 degrees. highs between 50 and 55. really not a bad day at all. a few sprinkles ahead of a weak cold front coming through from gaithersburg toward dickerson and poolesville toward charleston. that's t. just a couple of sprinkles out there. the other problem is the fog. a dense fog advisory d.c. south and east till 6:00 a.m. visibility down in manassas and call per. but behind the front the advice i can'ts start to pick up. temperatures low to mid-40s.

in washington look at our microsun weather camera. well, we're not seeing anything because of the fog there but that's a live picture of what's not out there. foggy, 41 degrees. feels like 36 with that south wind at 7. this is what we're looking at. this storl spinning right here -- this storm spinning right here in northern mexico. as this thing comes across texas, you see the moisture. that's going to carve out a decent area of low pressure coming out of the gulf of mexico. that will track toward the east, northeast. when it comes out here, we're there. a hundred miles could make a big difference for us on sunday. so no problems today. no problems tonight. all is quiet. a little breezy. tomorrow we'll see some of those clouds increase. then here comes the moisture. saturday night into sunday morning. this is one computer model. it's got it more to the south. if this ends going a little bit more to the north, we could see a really decent amount of snow around here by sunday afternoon, sunday night.

stay tuned. goes a little farther south and east, it won't be nearly as much. 54, breezy today. tonight we're dipping into the upper 20s and mid-30s. tomorrow 54 with increasing clouds. sunday looks like rain changes to snow and falling temperatures could be a rather difficult travel time around here late sunday, sunday night. if you have travel plans, keep that in mind. as we look at the rest of the seven-day forecast, better by president's day 44. tuesday 55 and another chance of showers on wednesday. here's monika samtani at 4:48 with time saver traffic. early this morning it was an accident involving a tractor- trailer and another vehicle and it has ended up with one person dead at the scene there. we're talking about the accident just after connecticut avenue. it happened just before 3:00 this morning. maryland state police and montgomery county police are on the scene investigating at the scene of the crash. that's going to take a little while. in the meantime all lanes are blocked there. i subject you choose your alternate route early. i also want to give you a heads up that northbound connecticut avenue you cannot exit on to

the inner loop leer as well. so your alter -- here as well. your alternate outs on the north side of the beltway, take plyers mill to georgia avenue. the intersection of connecticut and georgia is doing just fine. on the south side of the beltway take connecticut to east west highway and work your way around that toward georgia as well and back on to the beltway. i'll keep you posted on the situation. let's go into virginia on the northbound side of 395. right now everything is looking good to the 14th street bridge but we'll take a live look as well at duke street. it's going to be the fog that's a factor. i'll end with a live look into downtown. pennsylvania avenue, the fog is thick, high up. we'll go to our camera there. pennsylvania avenue, you can just about see the road below. coming up in my next report, i will update you on the situation in bethesda at 4:55. mike? >> thanks, monika. just about 4:50 now of the the so-called underwear bomber is going to spend the rest of his life behind bars. a federal judge sentenced umar

farouk abdulmutallab after the 25-year-old pled guilty to trying to below up a jet christmas day 2009. prosecutors played a videotape showing an explosion that could have happened if the bomb had worked. >> two, one. >> the nigerian native pled guilty last october. he said the explosive laden underwear was, quote, a blessed weapon to avenge muslims killed around the world. he admitted al qaeda leader inspired him. if he was released he would likely try another suicide mission. about 170 marines just back from afghanistan took part in a purple heart ceremony. it was led at the marine corps memorial last night. there were also some emotional reunions earlier at walter reed national medical center in bethesda. black iron marines as they're known visited 16 wounded war

yars from -- warriors from their unit. it's the hope the marines will lift the spirits of the injured since not all wounds are physical. >> caught on tape, a woman is run over by the same hit-and- run driver not once but twice. donna adams knows she's lucky to be alive after the speeding car mowed her down last weekend throwing her on to the hood and there the ground. there you see it in this videotape n. is from fall river, massachusetts. it shows the driver getting out. there he is getting out of the car, looking down on to donna and then he gets in and runs over her again. the driver crashed about a block away and tried to run but a good samaritan chased him down. >> i just grabbed him by the shoulders and held him down and by that time the cops were coming around the corner. >> i'd seen my life flash by me. i thought i was gone. i'm thankful to be here. >> police arrested the 32-year- old driver. he told officers he had had five beers and two shots the
