we begin this afternoon with breaking news from wall street. the dow crossed the 13,000 mark for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. but it has now gone back below the 13,000 mark. the last time it was there was may 20th, 2008, four months before the leman brothers

investment bank went under. u.s. stocks got help today from a bailout deal for greece, aimed at preventing a potentially catastrophic default and from strong corporate earnings at home. the s & p and the nasdaq were also up today in heavy trading. thank you so much for joining us, i'm jc hayward. nato is trying to head off a public relations nightmare in afghanistan after troops reportedly burned copies of the koran and a pile of tbar badge outside a -- garbage outside a military base. rina hasan has more. reporter: more than 2,000 afghans chanted death to america outside of bagram air force base. the major u.s. military base in afghanistan. they held up partially burned copies of the koran, blaming nato troops for throwing the holy books away with a pile of trash. nato officials are trying to do damage control. the top general in the country

says it was a mistake. he's ordered an investigation and is offering an apology. >> i promise you this was not intentional in any way. reporter: an afghan official says local workers on the base saw what was going on and recovered the burning books. the incident has angered afghans who already think foreign troops are not respectful of their religion. this man says they are the enemy of our soil, our honor and our koran. u.s. helicopters fired flares to try to break up the crowd, but after a decade of war, protesters are fed up. they threw stones and demanded that troops leave their country if they can't bring peace. rita nissan for cbs news. let's turn our attention now to the republican presidential race. the candidates are preparing for primaries in arizona and michigan. those elections are exactly one week away. former pennsylvania senator rick santorum is leading in the

polls and lately he's been focusing his attacks on president obama rather than his gop competitors. >> whose side is he on is the question. we need someone that's on your side. >> both mitt romney and newt gingrich have the financial backing to catch up to santorum in the polls. supporters gave romney and gingrich more than $5 million each last month. police are still working to identify the 29-year-old female driver who died last night after her car crashed into a kentucky fried chicken store. this morning crews replaced the windows and doors that were shattered when the speeding bmw slammed into the restaurant on martin luther king highway at sheriff road in landover. police say the victim was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour when it lost control nearly 100 yards away. four people were also injured in the wreck, but they are

expected to recover. the trial of five district men charged with unleashing a wild shooting on south capital street will begin today. prosecutors say that the five men are responsible for an eight-day wave of violence that culminated with the march 2010 drive-by shooting. four teens were killed as they left a funeral. a fifth person was murdered days later supposedly over a stolen bracelet. all five will go on trial at the same time. the defendants are facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. hundreds of thousands of partyers are in new orleans now for today's mardi gras celebration. fat tuesday marks the end of the carnivale season. the final party before lent begins. the carnival was shut down at midnight at the start of ash wednesday. city officials estimate that this year's celebration will bring in more than $100 million to the local economy. we'll have more news and

we are enjoying beautiful weather. it is just gorgeous out. >> yeah. and it's going to be even warmer tomorrow and warmer thursday. thursday is the day we will probably have people out in shorts as we'll be well up into the 60s. we might even flirt with 70 in a few spots thursday south and west of d.c. then it's going to get colder again this weekend. it's february, after all. but today we're making the first step. we're going to make it into the low 50s. lots of clouds out there, day planner and that's going to be the case. we may get into more sunshine later this afternoon. pretty cloudy at the moment, lots of high and mid-level clouds. these are dry clouds. 47 at 1:00, and as we head

toward the 3:00 hour, potentially into the low 50s this afternoon. those winds out of the south 10 to 15. they'll gust up to 20 at times. as we get to the afternoon and evening hours, you'll notice upper 40s. but, look, the winds stay up. so tonight not nearly as cold as what we had this morning when we had a few spots in the upper teens. you see how the clouds have rolled in. you see how it looks like it's raining here, the returns, the air is dry. looking at doppler 1,000 hd, this is falling apart and it's not reaching the ground, evaporating before it gets to the lower levels of the atmosphere. leesburg and winchester 49 right now, fredricksburg is 47 and across the bay, one of the warm spots there in easton at 48 degrees. outside on our michael and son weather camera, we do have some breaks looking off toward the east. but overhead here in the northwest, looks mostly cloudy out there, and that's what they're reporting at reagan national. 46 degrees, feeling like 39 with that south wind way up. right now it's 17 miles an hour. for us the thing that's going to warm us up, this storm

system and even the one on the west coast bringing lots of heavy snow to the mountains and the rockies. but this guy spinning here giving us the southerly winds, so it's bringing up the milder air and that's going to be the case for the next couple of days as we get a little bit warmer each and everyday. today we make the first step into the low 50s. tomorrow around 60. then as we get into thursday, maybe mid- to upper 60s, potentially a few breaks in the cloud cover here later on. this will sweep by us. and then tomorrow in the afternoon, tomorrow night, chances for a couple of showers, mainly going to be north and northwest of d.c. so the forecast calls for 53 today, breezy. 30s to even 40 tonight. winds stay up a little bit. mild tomorrow, maybe a few showers really tomorrow night into the early, early hours thursday. milder thursday, mid-60s, maybe flirting with 70. and as we head toward friday, we're going to be seeing more rain, 60. and the weekend features blustery conditions saturday, sunday and monday. today is a very special day here with us at wusa9. jc hayward celebrating her 40th anniversary.

bruce johnson is joining me now. and, bruce, this is a big day and thanks for coming in. >> my pleasure. it's a big day not just for the station, it's a big day for the town, maryland, d.c., virginia. jc hayward, she's been here 40 years, howard. she was the first woman anchor in this town. you can imagine what that was like. she's one of the deans of all the journalists here. maybe now she'll stop calling me boy and cub reporter. i'm hoping for that. want to give you some history on jc hayward. take a look. >> we'll have more details coming up on eyewitness news at 6:00. president ford offered turkish leaders. it has been a history-making day in salt lake city. jc hayward four decades of reporting and anchoring in one shop is unheard of and it probably will never be repeated in our market, if anywhere else in the country. in those four decades, she's done it all, she's reported reported sports, arts, education, breaking news and she's talked to almost everyone. >> for me looking back on my, you know, brief career in

broadcasting, you know, i've met some great people, and, you know, right up there is jc hayward. jc, it's been an honor and privilege working with you these past two years. it's so great to work with someone who has been so important to broadcasting, to women, to the washington d.c. area, and i don't think in my entire experience in broadcasting in my 35 years, i don't think i've worked with anyone who lights up a room or lights up a camera or a set the way you do. you always bring something special. >> i met jc over 10 years ago now. we were introduced by jc's very good friend patty andringa who was chairman of the boys and girls club sports. since that time jc has been so helpful and such a great supporter of our kids. you can ask, jc, can you come.

>> oh, thank you. muah. i won't call you a cub reporter anymore. you are a seasoned reporter now. >> i'm still a cub. i'm the rookie on the set here. >> talk to us. after 40 years, how do you feel when you reflect back? is there something that just jumps out at you? >> oh, gosh, yes, there are some things that jump out at me. speaking of jumping out at you, remember nellon man dell la? -- nelson mandela, the interview i had with him, i followed him when he came to the united states, went to new york, went to boston, followed him to atlanta, and then had an exclusive interview with him here. as a matter of fact, he was supposed to be your interview, but he said he wasn't going to talk to anybody except me. >> that's probably not the first interview you've taken. >> i had a strapless dress on, that's the only thing i had going for me. that's the only thing. >> we have somebody very special on the phone for you. tell us if you recognize the voice.

>> good afternoon, dr. jc hayward. i simply called to say how much i love you. you know you're an instrumental hand in my career. as a rookie there, you taught me how to mark up my script so that i would sound comfortable and intelligent on the air. you also taught me how to be very personable and if i may speak on behalf of my deceased mom, she indicated in so many words if i could be anything like jc hayward in terms of personality, accessibility and remaining down to earth, i'll hit the mark. i love you very much, jc. >> and i love you. and i am so proud of james brown. every time i see you on television, i just flex my muscles and say, oh, yeah, that's my boy. >> well, you should. and, jc, i know you know this comes from the heart as everyone will say that with a common thread, i love you with all of my heart and soul and your longevity speaks to the sustained excellence that you displayed throughout your career and your humanity. thank god. >> oh, thank you for the phone call and thank you for those

jc hayward, 40 years on the air at channel 9 and still looking just as good as ever. congratulations. >> i remember jc, i had dinner with max one night and he said you better watch out, dude. i said why. he said because there's a fine young thing coming up here from atlanta if i'm not mistaken, and i said yeah, promises, promises, and then i looked up on the screen one day and there you were. and i said oh, my, my. i looked at you just a couple of days ago and i said oh, my, my. still got it going on, girl. you go, jc. congratulations, baby. >> oh, that is so precious from them, doreen and, of course, jim. jim, you look good to me too, honey. >> later for that. we got a very special guest in the house right now.

d.c. mayor vincent gray and as jc said a short time ago, you were a child when she started on the air. >> i wish. >> thank you for being here. >> not only am i glad to be here, there's no where else to be other than you here celebrating 40 years of a fantastic career in the district of colombia, jc. >> thank you. >> i want you to know that today has been declared jc hayward day in the district of colombia. >> oh, my goodness. >> you are the only one for whom that's been declared today. >> oh, my gracious. how special that is. >> how special you are. >> thank you, mr. mayor. >> not only have you done a great job in your professional career, but i look at the things you've done for the city, the boys and girls club, options public charter school which i was delighted to be invited to be the commencement -- >> our first graduation speaker. >> absolutely. and i watched how those students related to you and your words there, it really shows the passion that you have for this city and how much people love you in the city and will continue to do so, jc. >> thank you, mr. mayor.

this is so special that you took time out of your busy schedule to celebrate with me. >> i wouldn't be anywhere else. by the way, i was delighted just a year ago to be with you as you were indoctrinated into the black journalists hall of fame. very few people have had that honor and you immensely deserved it and i'm glad i was able to be there to be a part of it. >> mayor, speak to how important it is to those see her and touch her. they point to their daughters and sons and say, you know, this woman set an example, blazed a path. how important is she to the community to those young people out there? >> i think she's a tremendous role model. she shows it can be done. you go back 40 years ago and first woman anchor in the district of colombia, what an experience that must have been. and now that's just routine. you have blazed a trail for so many people, jc, and our kids when they watch you on tv, they see the constant professional

and they see somebody we know who reaches back to try to bring them along. it doesn't get any better than that. thank you. that was so special for me when i came here. i didn't want to be just a face on television, you know, i wanted to put down roots here. i was not born here, i was not raised here. but this city has embraced me and shown me so much love, and i just wanted to be a part of the city from the very beginning. and i must tell you, when i came to channel 9, i only came for six months. i really didn't intend to stay, but my goodness -- >> that's a long six months. >> am i glad that i did. >> as are we. you've been a fantastic part of our community. we own you now. you can't go anywhere. >> i will not go anyplace, mr. mayor. you got me. >> and your involvement with howard university too,late not forget that. you're a graduate of howard university and honored a doctorate from howard and have helped to support this -- >> as you've given money, fat checks. everybody knows about that. we're going to be right back,

how come you all just getting to celebrate her. thank you. jc, seriously, if congress had been in session today, i couldn't have made it up here because i would be on the floor of the house asking the house of representatives to join me in celebrating 40 years of magnificent broadcast journalism by none other than jc hayward. >> thank you. thank you councilmember. >> we acknowledge her 40 years on the air, but more importantly your 40 years in the community. you've been an asset to the community, participated in so many activities, helping the community and the enjoyment of life that we have here in the entire region. i want to thank you for all that you've done for our entire community, not just here at channel 9 but throughout the entire community. >> congratulations. and jc, before we go, the channel 9 family wants to come up here. we want to make a presentation to you. >> oh, my goodness. >> you are a leader, we love you. >> i love cake. >> oh, my dposh, leslie. >> it's heavy. oh, my gosh! >> we have flowers for you.
