suspect. >> george is withdrawing from the university of virginia and remains in the custody of the authorities. >> today george huguely wept in court. this is 9news now. >> nearly two years after the murder that shocked uva and the whole nation, a guilty verdict for george huguely the fifth. jurors convicted him of second degree murder in the death of his former girlfriend yeardley love. >> just a few minutes ago, they recommended a sentence 25 years on the second degree murder charge and one year for grand larceny. we have team coverage on the story. let's start with bruce leshan who is still at his post outside the courthouse in charlottesville tonight. bruce. >> reporter: yes, anita, a night filled with sadness. sadness all around as the prosecutors said. the night nearly two years ago when yeardley love was killed, the jury now holding george huguely responsible for that. and tonight where this young man

was sentenced, a sentence that may keep him in prison until 50 years old. his family, his young cousin coming out of the courtroom in tears. clearly in shock by the verdict and by the sentence. both announced tonight. they had no comment for us. no comment on camera either from yeardley love's family. they said this, we dread looking back on the events of may third, 2010 and pray for the strength to get through each day. time has not made us miss yeardley any less. in fact, quite the opposite. it is truly devastating to wake up each day and realize that she is no longer here. yeardley's contagious smile, kind spirit, gentle touch have left this world, but we know

that heaven has an angel like no other. we will continue to keep her spirits alive by performing works of kindness in her name. now, the lawyers on both sides came out to talk to us. here is a little bit of what they had to say. >> there are no winners in this case. there is nothing but loss everywhere. our hearts go out to the love family. they suffered enormously. >> we are, of course, disappointed with this verdict. but we've been proud to represent george in his fight for fairness over the last couple of years. he has the support of a loving family. he's displayed amazing resilience and courage. >> reporter: huguely's lawyer pleaded with js to think back to the moment when love was dead. she's not dead.

she's not dead. please tell me she's not dead. huguely wept again in the courtroom. his head down, tears rolling down his cheeks. but his far from the only tears. yeardley love's sister told jurors will looking at pictures of her friends, her voice breaking she said i keep the thinking yeardley should be in the pictures but she's not and never will be. lexie love says the longing for her missing sister is like a physical pain. the prosecutor had asked jurors to convict yugly of first degree premeditated murder or felony murder in the commission of a robbery. but they must have decided that when huguely took love's laptop, it was an afterthought after beating her. and while breaking down her door must have shown malice, he did not break into her apartment with a plan to kill her. george huguely's lawyers said on

the podium behind me that they would still seek a correction. apparently they are planning to appeal this. the judge has set a date in april to at least begin considering presentence reports and then impose the sentence. either what the jury recommended or something slightly less. those are his only choices. he cannot increase it. anita and derek, back to you. >> bruce, you have been bringing us this trial every day. we appreciate your work so much. george huguely grew up right here in the washington area. yeardley love was near baltimore. >> tonight neighbors close to both families are sounding off on the guilty verdict, and our ken molestina is live and picks up the team coverage. ken. >> reporter: you know, the entire nation has been glued to the television since watching all of the developments coming out of charlottesville and so have all of those who feel a strong connection to both families. those who live near george huguely senior have been following the trial every step of the way. now they're speaking out about their neighbor's son being a

convicted killer. >> we're very sad this family has gone through this traumatic incident. >> growing up a good family. losing their child going to jail. that's really, really sad for their family too. >> reporter: the 24-year-old grew up in chevy chase but would spend time with his father at his potomac home. those that remember yeardley love were also overcome by emotion after the guilty verdict of second degree murder came down. >> i think it's deserved. i think the evidence is obvious. and i'm surprise it took a year and a half to get there. >> reporter: one life violently taken. another ruined by a prison sentence. >> i hope that both families can find the peace in their hearts. >> reporter: in case you did not know, george huguely is a graduate of landon school in bethesda. back to you. >> thank you, ken. now on to tonight's other big story. the big republican debate in

arizona. the next last one before next tuesday's primary. gary has the latest. >> reporter: it's the last debate with rick santorum a target. no big news here. but some heat as he responded to the new attacks. his opponents tried to question santorum's conservative credential. >> because he's a fake. [ laughing ]. . >> unreal. unreal. >> congratulations. >> reporter: mitt romney tried to argue santorum isn't a real conservative. >> you voted to raise the debt ceiling five times without compensating cuts in spending. >> reporter: after an exchange on spending. >> you're entitled to your opinions. >> i've heard that before. >> you misrepresent the fact and you're misrepresenting the facts. you don't know what you're talking about. >> reporter: well, right back at you. >> there were so many misrepresentations there it's going to take me awhile. >> reporter: and some in your face history. >> you not only endorsed me you said this is the guy that is really conservative and we can

really trust him. >> reporter: an interesting note for dc area workers in a discussion about protecting the southern border. >> there are 23,000 department of homeland security personnel in the dc area. i'm prepared to move up to half of them to arizona, new mexico and texas. this is a doable thing. >> reporter: questions about santorum's posin social ills were frequent. >> just because i'm talking about it doesn't mean i want a government program to fix it. >> reporter: interesting challenge describe n one word. . >> congressman paul. >> consistent. >> senator santorum? >> courage. resolute. >> mr. speaker? >> cheerful. [ laughing ]. >> reporter: the surprise answer of the night, the michigan and arizona primaries are next tuesday. michigan growing tighter in the polls between romney and santorum. it will be interesting to see what impact if any tonight's debate will have on that. anita. the virginia house of delegates today passed a bill that would require women to get

an ultrasound before having an abortion. but before the vote, delegates made a big change to what has been a controversial piece of legislation. no woman will have to undergo an internal ultrasound, only an external one will be required. delegates offered the bill. he opposes a woman's legal right to abortion. government should not be in the business of forcing people to undergo in -- invasive medical procedures. the liquor store we have been reporting on finally has a court date. the owner was arrested last saturday night and charged with selling alcohol to a minor. kim's arrest came after a 9news now hidden camera investigation in which young people admitted they bought liquor from that store for years. allegations kim has denied. the dc attorney general's office says he has a march 13th court date, but the office will decide on what charges to proceed with,

if any, over the next couple of weeks. kim's alcohol license is up for renewal next month, and dc's alcohol licensing board is working with the montgomery county police regarding citations they've written to teenagers who crossed into dc and then back into maryland after allegedly buying alcohol at town square market. remember the dc police escort for charlie sheen. a former police commander connected to the trip is taking legal action. he is hilton burton and he plans to file a whistle blower lawsuit against the district. members of the team provided charlie's escort last april with their lights on. they led the actor from dulles airport to his performance at constitution hall. after the stories made the headlines, he testified before the dc council celebs get lights -- the demotion was not connected to the escort nor to burton's testimony. it could be at least another

month before a virginia man charged with plotting to blow up the u.s. capitol will be back in court. today the man waved his rights to preliminary and detention hearings and fbi investigators arrested him on friday as part of a sting operation. the 29-year-old walked towards the capital wearing a suicide vest and carrying a gun or at least that's what he thought they were. actually they were harmless and had been provided by undercover operatives working the case. he is not likely to be heard from again before they hand down a formal indictment sometimes in the next 30 days. still ahead tonight, have you ever seen one of these before? it's a bin supposedly to collect books or cds and dfrdz for charity. >> -- dvds for donations. >> it may not go to the charity after all. 63 was the high today and it's still in the 50s. it's going to be mild in the

a battle over books is brewing all across the country and it's all over some big blue bins. >> the bins say the books go to charity. but as lesli foster tells us, the word is the source of a growing debate and at least one state investigation. >> it's time to take a look. >> reporter: at the ford reading center, putting words together is like taking a final victory lap around the track. this operates thanks to dozens of books from an organization called reading tree. >> this pushes the scales overtop. >> reporter: some of them come from blue bins like the ones you see in this virginia parking lot. they are marked with words like books for charity and donates books, cds and dvds. >> you can say i was extra sensitive to the appearance of

this box. >> reporter: a library volunteer wanted to know more about the boxes that she says resulted in a 20% drop to donations to the library. >> what i found was very little information about who and what reading tree is. >> reporter: reading tree calls itself a non-profit group based in utah. it sends books collected from bins and purchased from thrift stores and libraries to other schools and organizations that serve low income children. reading tree partners with a company called thrift recycling management which is based in washington state. here at their forestville maryland plant, workers sort through books to be donated, resold or recycled, but you wouldn't know that by looking at the bins. >> is there a problem with the bins as they're labeled? >> i think there has been. it wasn't our intent to create a problem. >> reporter: but the bins aren't the only problem. their financial reports raise questions too. in 2009, reading tree reported

more than $10 million in contributions and grants. they later amended that same return to show they had actually taken in less than $1 million. >> i'm not sure that this smells right. >> reading tree is a non-profit totally separate entity from trn. we have a social mission. >> reporter: trm president jeff mick mull en mcmullen says that is to put a book in a needy person's hands. but what percentage goes to children and what percentage are resold or recycled. for every book that is sold, another is donated. outcry about the bins is growing across the country. the state of oregon is requesting complaints about how the bins are labeled but others are not waiting for officials to step in. >> the library group in chevy chase, dc, protested so strongly that the reading tree bin that was once here is now gone. >> reporter: the group at the southeast dc library branch has

a different view. >> i was delighted to see them because we've always needed more of an outlet for our books. >> there is no disparity where the money is going. we sit down with anybody at the library and go through line through line. >> reporter: lesli foster 9news now. >> they plan to change them to better reflect how the books you donate are used. and they say you should notice the changes in just a couple of weeks. a european vacation, something shiny on four wheels. what would you do? it could be money that you added. that is until now. money being held by state and city treasuries. if i call out your name or you see it scrolling at the bottom of your tv screen, you have some money coming your way.

the thunderstorms from roanoke approaching 64. even into portions of west virginia around charleston. some pretty good storms. a lot of heavy rain now from fredericksburg southward down towards richmond. and we'll zoom in again with live doppler 9000. if you haven't downloaded our weather app, you might want to do it and track these storms. because we may have more storms tomorrow night. let's go to the app store and search for wusa radar. this is heavy rain in southern prince george's county and also into charles county across into the northern neck. and all the way into fredericksburg. we'll zoom in a little bit and looking at rainfall rates. the red is one and a half inches per hour. so it's raining to beat the band. over towards plum point. raining pretty steadily and moderately towards hollywood and over towards la plata. now, what is going to happen in the next hour or so, we'll put this into motion. this is actually going to move off to the east, northeast.
