hello. i'm one on one today with a registered dietician and you know this is national heart month. for people who suffer from hypertension, we really have an incredible diet for you. it's called the dash diet. i really don't know a lot about it. where did it come from? >> with the national institutes of health, they did the initial research. it's been shown to lower blood pressure quickly, effectively and in as little as two weeks but you're adding food instead of worrying about taking it away. >> that's incredible. >> what do you mean you're adding food? >> the whole diet is really focused -- it has healthier things like whole grains and lean meats, fish, beans. but the main goal is to
12:26 pm
increase fruits, vegetables, dairy. there was some improvement in blood pressure with just getting lots of fruits and vegetables, but it was almost magic when you added dairy to it. two to four servings of dairy. this magic seems to come from the mineral mix that are in these foods together. potassium, magnesium and calcium. rich sources that really can affect your blood pressure. so this diet can be overwhelming because there are lots of things that you can change. so break it down. don't try to do everything at once. you don't chief this overnight. start by focusing on adding one item, one extra fruit, one extra vegetable, one extra dairy to your diet. whether that's in one week or over six months. point, you could have a latte for breakfast, a cup of milk. cue have fruit and yogurt parfait for lunch or maybe just put fruit on your cereal.
12:27 pm
you could super size your vegetables at dinner time. in fact, you want your plate to look a lot like my plate where you add a dairy or milk to your meal and half of your plate are fruits and vegetables. so that's a trick. >> i understand that not only is this diet good for hypertension, but it also solves other problems, such as strokes, kidney stones, colon cancer and diabetes. so it's not just for people who suffer from hypertension. i guess it's for everyone. >> if there was a one size diet fits all, the dash diet would be it. it affects so many of the conditions, helps prevent the ones that are killing us and making our lives less pleasurable. and yet again there's plenty of food to really help fill you up without filling you out. you can actually whittle down your waistline. >> are we cutting down on fat? >> it is less fat, less sugar, doesn't have to be expensive. a cup of milk, 20 cents.
12:28 pm
fruits, vegetables can be frozen, canned or dried. look for seasonal fruits and vegetables. they're the best buy. >> it's called the dash diet. go to jchayward.com. we'll have information on it. we all need to be a little healthier and look like you. >> happy heart month. >> thank you. come back and visit us at 5:00.
