sit down and eat. i like them apples. and thank you for sitting down, standing up or whatever to watch us on 9news now at 5:00 a.m.ment i'm andrea roane. >> happy friday, i'm mike hydeck. good morning monika samtani. >> how are you? >> traffic --'s coming up momentarily. >> my mother is watching. >> i know, i know. >> good morning mama. you got allergies which are high up there? the tree pollen is way up there today. the winds are going to be way up in the severe weather threat this afternoon. a severe weather alert day. a quick look at the wind advisories and warnings. the warnings are west with gusts to 6 # miles an hour places like frederick and leesburg and winchester out toward well warrenton sort of on the border there with the advisory and the warning. then closer ho home, gusts maybe 50 miles per hour in the immediate metro. upper 60s at noon. i know it looks like a lot of sunshine, we have the threat for a couple of showers and thunderstorms. you can see that in northern virginia now coming to the

winchester area and parts of northern maryland some of the showers here over the next half hour or so. monika's got timesaver traffic now. the good news is it's friday morning light. and you know, in terms of the weather, it's not affecting traffic as of yet. the beltway looks great. you had a couple of construction spots around town but right now everything looks fine around town. let's go over to the north side if you're planning to head on the beltway, there are no problems to report between college park and bethesda. we'll take a live look at the american legion bridge on the west side of town. looking great here. no problems to report between bethesda and tyson's corner, all construction pretty much picked up on 66 at route 50. we'll go back over to the maps and this time, to the vw parkway and lute 50 if -- route 50. if you're coming in from manassas you will be okay through the east corridor and on the south side of town, no problems coming up from southern maryland on to the beltway at route 4 for us. still down to oxon hill and the wilson bridge. coming up in my next report, we'll go into virginia at 5:10. back to you guys.

thank you monika. today maryland is one step closer to making same sex marriage legal. the senate passed a bill in a close vote last night. >> and governor o'malley is expected to sign the measure but it probably won't end there. delia goncalves is live in the satellite center with a breakdown of last night's vote. good morning. >> reporter: good morning mike and andrea. a pretty exciting night at the capitol in annapolis yesterday. the hallway was filled with supporters after this measure passed. and the whole chambers really erupted in applause. the measure, the official vote 25-22. it was really tight but the measure did indeed pass last night. bill sponsor richard mattelino indeed got a hug from governor o'malley after that historic vote. the governor is expected to sign the measure making maryland the eighth strait plus the district of columbia to recognize same sex marriage. it comes less than a week after the house of delegates barely passed the bill. the vote also ends a year long

that would define life starting at conception. the state senate sent the so- called personhood bill back to committee for next year. police are investigating is robbery that ended in murder in northeast washington. police found a man shot in the 5,000 block of tenth street. they believe the suspect or suspects were trying to rob him. he later died. police are hoping to hear from anyone who was near the scene around 6:30 last night when the robbery happened. prince george's county police are looking for suspects in a home invasion in buoy. two men burst through a back door of a home on henderson chapel road yesterday morning. they tied up a couple and their daughter and stole the cash and their car. the robbers were wearing masks and at least one of them had a gun. neighbors felt 9news now the victims have shared their homes over the years with young

people in need of foster parenting or adopting. time for the latest your money report this morning. jessica is off today but we still have the headlines for you. investors are hoping to end the week with a rally. the markets closed up in asia overnight. in britain headed downward though after the opening bell in london this morning. this after a major u.s. market all were on the upside yesterday. the dow picked up 46 points closing at 12,984. the nasdaq picked up about 24, that closed at 2956. and the s if and 500 picked up five and change. websites like facebook and google have come under fire recently due to privacy issues. well now the obama administration is trying to do something about it. it teamed up with these internet companies to keep your information from being tracked sort of. as alexis christoforous reports the companies are hoping this move will win back some consumers trust. >> reporter: sports fanatic amanda uses her iphone for instant access to nba stories

and scores and she's not surprised she gets basketball ads through her browser. >> een has your -- everybody has your information, what can you do? >> reporter: but federal officials say internet users should be able to choose whether they want their personal information collected or being sold to advertisers. thursday white house officials announced a coalition of internet giants have abreed to add a duo-- agreed to add a duonot track button on the web browser. they cannot use the information to send you customized at. the american civil rights union says it's a start. >> now they have to take the next step and make it really meaningful by making do not track mean -- actually mean you won't be tracked. >> reporter: web providers will still collect information about your internet habits and use it for market research and product development. >> it doesn't make me more comfortable. not at all. >> reporter: internet providers also agreed to make opting out easier. right now it takes several steps and can be confusing. fire fox first offered a do in

howard bernstein here, your weather first on the severe weather alert day. heavier showers right now on live doppler 9000 hd up in the win chester area approaching oh charlestown right there along route 340 heads to frederick and just west of martinsburg as well. some high winds as well as we get into the afternoon maybe even a few severe storms south and east of town. temperatures will shoot well up into the 70s actually. low to mid-70s for highs with the noontime temperature of 68. we could have gusts in the

metro to 50 and knot and west to 60. and we've got advisories and warnings, full details on the next five. right now monika's in with timesaver traffic. i'm happy to say still looking great on the northbound side of i-95 although a bit of volume here in this area. coming up in my next report, construction on the beltway in maryland at 5:17. back to you andrea. making news now at 5:10, an investigation is underway after police in los angeles shot and killed a suspected carjacker late last night. police say a man in his 20s led officers on a chase through hollywood when the suspect pulled into a gas station, police opened fire after he appeared to be waving a gun. the closest bistandser hid behind a car and no one else was injured. the 9-year-old seattle boy was arraigned yesterday for wednesday's shooting of a fellow third grader at their elementary school. police say the boy put a pistol in his backpack and it fired when the backpack was slammed

down on a desk. doctors are trying to save the girl who was hit with the gunfire in the abdomen. the boy replied no when the judge asked him if he understood what the meaning of bodily harm was. it appears that john edwards sex tape will never be made public. in a settlement reached yesterday. former edwards aide young has given the tapes back to rielle hunter. the agreement calls for the tapes to be destroyed within 30 days. if you're looking for a place to stay inside when the high winds crank up this afternoon, we'll take a sneak peek at some new movies in theaters at 5:58. at 5:34. why some area governments have spent most of their snow removal budget even though we've hardly had any snow. and at 5:15, howard is going to break down why he says this is a severe weather alert day. we'll be right back.

welcome back to 9news now. you see it there on the screen. severe weather alert day. and it's because of winds, high winds and strong storms. >> that's right first things first, we'll have the winds to develop and some of the showers this morning and the big stuff i'm concerned about. the winds i don't think will be cranking until later this morning and this afternoon. you could have gusts 50, 60 miles an hour out north and west of the town. don't put the garbage cans out. they're going to fly around. they may be in the next

neighborhood with the winds and plus the garbage will be all over place. they're going to be up tonight and overnight and tomorrow. if you can wait until the next time. just wait. i'm going to start actually with the wind advisory and the wind gusts and then the storms here on the graphics. in the metro area where we've got the yellow counties, that's the wind advisory, the orange counties are the wind warning. could get to the 60-mile an hour range and you can imagine some of the damage that can happen with that with some tree branches down and maybe even a small tree. fire danger's up as well and keep that in mind and a lot going on. here's a look at the bus stop forecast, not too breezy yet and maybe i'm a little premature with the windy and mild. but certainly mild. scattered showers. 40s 50s out there. sunrise at 6:48. and today we are going to see sunshine. we'll also have a couple of rounds of showers and storms like this morning. 57 degrees. chance of storms. then the sun comes out upper

60s by noon. we're going to the low maybe mid 70s in spots. crazy for late february. by 4:00, again a chance of storms 70 degrees. and then we're going to get cooler. here's the cold air coming in and winds going to the west, sustained winds 21, 22 but gusts 40, 45, 50 miles an hour not out of the question. here's a look at the first line of showers this morning out to the north and west. any lightning at the central and southern west virginia. around here though the rain has moved in. and on live doppler 9000 hd, we see lighter showers in montgomery and howard counties moving up toward baltimore but the heavier stuff now just west of frederick through harpers ferry south of charleston. martinsburg now with maryland and williamsport, got the heavier showers and all of this moving east, east northeast at about 40, 45 miles an hour. this stuff is hauling out of winchester here and through the martins buc area. we've seen pawpaw with the heavier sures and then moving off to the east.

let's talk temps because we have a big range out there from 42 in hagerstown to 52 in d. c.. to ten degrees warmer another ten down south. 63 in tappahannock at the airport there so those guys are easily going into the 70s. in d. c. this morning good visibility on the michael & son weather camera under cloudy skies and a north northeast wind. right now 7 miles an hour. that will switch to the southwest and really haul later on ahead of the front which is it will back here. some showers there, snow to the north. there's going to be hefty snows across parts of new york state and new england. but with the second line of storms later today, that threat of severe storms south and east of 95. damaging wednesday gusts and some areas far enough south, even richmond south, even an isolated tornado can't be ruled out and once we get this through us, the rain showers in the mountains will turn to snow showers. that's pretty good news for the ski areas at least this final week of february. 74 today. that's 25 degrees above average. tonight we dip into the 35 to 40 range still windy tomorrow.

48 maybe a stray flurry. sunday 49 and it will be cool and then back in the 50s by monday. 60s by tuesday. showers return with some rain on wednesday. monika samtani are you anywhere near as busy as i am today? otherwise the roads are not that busy. it's friday morning light. here's the north side of town. i wanted toive go you a heads- up on the southbound side of connecticut avenue between the beltway and jones bridge road, there's construction in the right lane and it's causing a bit of a slow exit to get on to connecticut avenue southbound. the beltway itself is unaffected by the construction. let's take a look outside live if you're planning to head over to colesville road on the outer loop of the beltway leaving 95 you will be just fine. volume is still pretty light this morning. back to the maps and this time tall bay north coming out of frederick, there are no problems to report on i-70 or 270 coming down past sugar loaf into jermantown.

old town maryland getting reports of heavier showers there. light stuff up towards baltimore and the showers around this morning. some of those will be moderate here as by 9:00 we're going to be near 60 degrees. we get to the middle of the day and some sunshine. that's going to boost us upper 630s and even low 70s south but then in the afternoon the threat for strong to severe storms high temperatures in the 70s mike and andrea. amazing. today's maryland and georgetown lacrosse game could be the end of a long time rivalry. >> the nationals' positions players aren't all healthy in spring training. kristen berset has the details. >> we talked a lot about stephen strasburg's return about ryan zimmerman's contract. and about whether or not bryce harper is ready for the big leagues. another guy to keep your eye on though is adam laroche. the first baseman tried to play last season and has since had shoulder surgery. now he's not even close to 100%

but every day he's been able to throw the ball further and further which is good progress. he's not expected to be ready for the opening day but should be back this season. the public ultimatum from anderson to georgetown not only affects just the men's basketball team but hundreds of other student-athlete that is look forward to the rivalry that may be taken away. the match-ups create some obviously the most exciting games during the season. today, the men's lacrosse teams face off which is something they've done for the past ten years. unfortunately, though, it could be the last time these two play each other for a very long time. >> we obviously enjoy playing georgetown. it's a great game. it's a great rivalry. we hope that at some point we can get it back on again. but we're team players and you know whatever department is going to ask or other coaches need us to do. we'll support our guys 100%. jeff jones and au eagles hosting buck nell tonight. american up by one but mike m

everything else. >> really the afternoon and evening is the bigger concern time. this morning we have some problems in the form of some showers mainly north and west of d.c.. but the afternoon hours starting at noon west, 3:00 here in the metro is when the advisories and warnings go into effect and i want to show you the advisories and warnings. in the yellow counties, that's a wind advisory. we could have gusts later this afternoon or evening 50 miles an hour. north and west, starting at noon really out to the shenandoah valley, that's the wind warnings. and those areas could see gusts to 60 miles an hour. so if you have to you know lower the basketball hoop or you got garbage to put out and you can't have somebody to pick it up. you might want to consider next time because when the winds kick up this afternoon if you're not home, you may just have the garbage can in the next county. 59 degrees at 9:00 and we could have shop showers arnold there. this afternoon showers and storms and upper 60s then but highs into the low to mid-70s in spots during the afternoon

hours. we've been watching showers this morning move across northern sections right now and i want to switch to live doppler 9000 hd from winchester that ride up 340 into frederick is a wet one and lighter showers up toward baltimore, now to monika samtani with temperatures this morning around 351 degrees. no need to really worry out the door to work. i think you're going to make it on time at least for now. i'm going to start off with virginia and show you what it looks like if you're planning to head inside the beltway running at or above the speed limit on 395 and 66. a live look first into springfield on the northbound side of 95. lanes are open coming up from the occoquan river to this point. we'll go further north now to the 14th street bridge. if that's where you're headed into downtown not bad at all across to the potomac river. this time south on the gw parkway you know normally by about i would say another 20 minutes or so, things start to get heavier on the gw parkway so if you're just now headed out the door you're going to be fine inside the beltway here.

we'll take a live look into rockville. the heart of rockville route 355 at route 328. nice and quiet here as well, back to you. maryland's law is on governor o'malley's desk this morning. the state senate passed the measure last night. >> once the governor signs it maryland will become the eighth state to legalize same sex marriage. delia goncalves is live in the satellite center to explain what appoints now have -- opponents now have. good morning. >> reporter: good morning andrea. there are several opponents, some church leaders and several republicans who want to put this measure up for a vote. and have the people decide whether or not same sex marriage should be legal in maryland and believe it or not, it was actually supporters of the bill who made all of this possible. get this -- you see the measure barely passed in the house of delegates last week and supporters including the bill sponsor and the governor agreed to write in conditions that

would allow opponents to request a referendum vote on the measure if it passed. quickly after the senate passed the bill last night 25-22. opponents said their next fight will be in the voting booth. recent polls show maryland voters are evenly split on this issue. >> i think the people of maryland will have that decision. no other state has approved this in referendum. i think thishes related to -- issues related the education, the issues related to religious freedom have not been resolved with this piece of legislation and i think people will be very motivated to put it on the ballot and take it to a vote. >> what's going to happen at a referendum sir? >> i think the people will pass it. >> reporter: you can see that was martin o'malley you just saw walking through the crowd. our colleague gary nuremberg helped us out with the morning's report. i should also tell you opponents have a long way do go. they need 55,000 signatures on -- before putting the measure on a november ballot. back to you.

>> all right, delia goncalves reporting from our satellite center. federal prosecutors have won a conviction in the sex trafficking case against an ms 13 gang leader. a jury found rances amaya guilty of conspiring to commit sex trafficking of a child and three counts of sex trafficking. investigators say he forced three girls, the youngest just 14, to have sex with strangers for money. at motels and even inside cars in falls church this went on. some of the girls were forced to have up to ten clients a day. emergency responders have a new way to help people in prince george's county. agency heads unveiled their new visual language translators yesterday. they're a little bit like the cards on airplanes that show you what to do in an emergency in case aconite speak one of the printed -- you don't speak one of the printed languages on the folder. louisa county high school is going to get $19 million from the federal emergency

management agency and it's going to repairing all the damage caused by the earthquake that hit there back in august. virginia governor says rebuilding the school however is going to cost $43 million and a combination of insurance, state and local funding is going to cover what fema does not. fema already awarded $3.2 million to the county to help build thomas jefferson elementary school. a lot of us are loving the mild almost snow free winter. just two measurable inches so far this season but that's not saving the state much when it comes to snow removal costs, the state highway administration says it spent $33 million of the $36 million budgeted. why? the agency dispatched crews 14 times this year to pretreat roads and remove any snow that did fall. app agency spokesman told wbal radio missing a storm is never an option. he says crews must have to be ready even if the forecast changes to have no snow.

at 5:34. time for another your money report. jessica doyle is off this morning. nissan is recalling a quarter million vehicles worldwide. they may have an engine problem that could lead to a fuel leak. the recall includes -- so far, no accidents or injuries have been reported and a nissan spokesperson says the company wants to keep it that way. and me about d.c.. that's the slogan of a tourism summit held yesterday on capitol hill. members of congress and staffers sampled food from many of the local restaurants and they shared insight on the district's museums and theaters and the night life there. still looks like a lot of fun. residents only have a tasty new option now. a grand opening ceremony was held thursday for a new safeway on spartan road. a large grocery store includes a sushi bar, open flame oven, breads are baked there. expanded cheese section.

good morning and welcome back to 9news now. severe weather alert day. today, winds the biggest problem later today. >> that's right, going to be after the noon hour. especially mid to late afternoon. not only the winds, but we've got a threat for severe storms south and east of town as well. two problems today. let's start with the wind advisory and the wind warning going into effect between noon and then 3:00. the noon start time is out

west. out toward i-81. 3:00 here in the metro. we're under the advisory, the counties in the lighter yellow shade. that would be around the d.c. and baltimore metros, gusts could get the 50 miles an hour later this afternoon into the evening hours. gusts to 60 possible out west and higher elevations there. noon to midnight is the general range although it doesn't start until 3:00 here closer the d.c.. again noontime start out to the west. it's mostly cloudy this morning and mild at the bus stop. 40s and 50s but we have some scattered showers out there. we'll look at that in a moment on radar and our sunrise at 6:48. so a light jacket required but you won't need it later on as temperatures shoot by noon towards 70. upper 60s, winds start to pick up southwest. 13 sustained. we should have some gusts by noon maybe in the 30-mile an hour range and then this afternoon gusts in the 50-mile an hour range and potentially some storms around here later this afternoon and early this evening with the threat for that severe weather south and east. here's a look at the regional

doppler, some snow up across parts of new england and some school delays in connecticut this morning. some thunderstorms down in southern west virginia but locally you can see how the moisture has come out of west virginia here. they've weakened. still though some rain we're talking about across parts of northern maryland, northern virginia in and around the baltimore area. heaviest stuff is north of leesburg and it's been coming out of winchester here up 522. this stuff is lighter than it was a half hour ago. that stuff has now moved east past charlestown into loudoun and frederick county, maryland, you can see it here from lovettsville up to jefferson and brunswick and thus coo or what. very, very quick movement on that and you'll notice very little if anything south of town. temperatures this morning they're on the chilly side north and west where we've got low 0s 234 leesburg at -- 40s in leesburg at 41. but d.c. south and east, now around 50. even 52 in college park. it's 45 in gaithersburg.

50 in springfield. outside on our michael & son weather camera, good visibility. it's pretty quiet out there this morning, we've got cloudy skies and 52 degrees. dew point's in the upper 40s and the air is getting more humid, more moisture. that's going to support some heavier rain showers later this afternoon. as we look at the futurecast, we'll see this first batch of rain this morning, 8:45. generally d.c., points north. shouldn't see too much south of town until later on. midday, fairly quiet. the afternoon, though, here comes some showers and storms with the front. heavierest down south where it's going to be warmer places like richmond and even up to fredericksburg and then southern maryland on the eastern shore clipping there. better chance late this afternoon than say north and west but here comes the winds, going to drive colder air here. that will turn the rain showers to snow showers in the mountains, maybe even a flurry in the mountains on saturday but it's going to be tough you have here with the -- up here with the winds and snow flying. i'm jealous if you're skiing tomorrow, however it's going to be cold and the snow will be

conference in tunisia to talk about a transition to democracy if al-assad's regime falls. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. making news now this morning, firefighters spent the night trying to contain the flames in galveston, texas. a tank holding crude oil exploded and it's burning on the docks there. it shook the surrounding area, no injuries were reported. the fbi is checking out suspicious packages sent to at least two u.s. senators. an envelope containing white powder was delivered to the philadelphia offices of senator pat toomey. it was harmless. staffers at tennessee state lamar alexander's nashville office also turned over a suspicious package. there will be a major speech on the economy in michigan today by mitt romney. romney is neck and neck and a race with rick santorum and this is where romney grew up. voters go to the polls tuesday in michigan and arizona. women are being asked to
