option here. i'm mike hydeck. happy friday, here's monika samtani. good to see you this morning. this one for you mama roan. let her know. she's watching the morning. >> there's a reason for that. >> right now howard has the weather first. it is a severe weather day a serious topic. >> especially afternoon and evening hours, the rain north of town this morning but the problem will be this afternoon when the winds really start to kick up. the wind advisories in the counties in yellow, the orange counties are where the wind warning will go into effect at 12:00 midnight. but winds later this afternoon and this evening could gust to 50 miles an hour. maybe 60 out to the west. in some of the higher elevations so we'll be watching that for, very areafully. 59 by 9:00. can't rule out a shower or storm here. middle of the day doesn't look too bad. becoming a little windy and upper 60s. we wet goth 70s but by 5:00, back into the 60s and some of the storms this afternoon could be strong to severe. we are looking at the rain

coming out of west virginia. there was some lightning and thunder with this earlier, now at least we're looking at the lighter showers up to the north and occasional area of yellow there around new market here on i-70 and into upper montgomery county some slight showers and this extends back into parts of to northern shenandoah valley and before i go a quick look at the temps. in the low 40s north to already to low 60s down tappahannock and richmond. it's 50 in la plata. monika samtani happy friday. at least you can enjoy half the day. the rest of the day, not so great. but this morning, things aren't looking too bad around town. the beltway's great. we're going to take a look at an accident here on the inbound side of new york avenue. it's at 9th street at the bridge there blocking the left lane. and it is slowing things down for you going about 30 miles an hour from bladensburg road heading over to 9th street right now. no problems through cheverly. in fact a look at route 50. coming in from annapolis this morning, it is nice and light all the way to the beltway.

just keep that accident in mind in northeast. we'll go back to the maps and this time over to virginia on the northbound side of 95. it's been incident-free. it is a bit slow from newington into spring fields. a live look there where you'll see just the volume building trying to exit to the beltway or continue north to 395. a live picture northbound 395 at duke street. still not looking too bad through landmark. more on area roadways once again at 6:11. maryland is poised to become the eighth state in the nation to allow same sex marriages. >> the state senate voted 254622 last night less than a week after the house of delegates passed the measure. so what happens next? delia goncalves joins us now live from the newsroom to detail some of that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning mike, andrea, the bill is probably sitting on the governor's desk this morning at this very hour waiting for his signature. he's already pledged to put the name on the bill. in fact, the governor made an appearance in the capitol last night after the historic vote

to congratulate wilson son senator richard -- bill sponsor senator richard madaleno. opponents were few and far between last night anticipating the outcome to have vote. there was a heated debate with a number of republicans saying marriage is indeed intended for procreation between a man and a woman but ultimately the body overruled that position and joined the seven other states and the district of columbia that now recognize marriage for all. >> for my policeman it's going to -- family it's going to mean a degree of safety, of confidence of security that we know that we will have the government behind us. >> he filed the lawsuit about -- in the mid 2000s and we are fabulously happy that this is finally the culmination of it and we finally have marriage in maryland. >> my faith tells me this is the right thing to do. this is not about legislating our faith. it's very much about protecting equality and justice for all families. >> reporter: the reverend however may be alone on this issue. many church leaders in the area

are against same sex marriage and they've joined with republicans to try to stop the measure. coming up in my next live report in a half hour, their plans at a vote and what that means for the president and this heated debate. back to you. andrea crash? >> thank you delia goncalves reporting live from the newsroom. in virginia, the general assembly is shelving a bill that would define life as starting at conception. the state senate sent the so- called personhood bill back to committee for consideration next year. a senate committee approved another bill though that would require external ultrasound exams for women seeking abortion. removed from that bill? a controversial provision that would have required a more invasive kind of ultrasound procedure. the hunt is on this morning for a pair of robbers. two men broke down a back door at a home in bowie both wearing masks. this was early yesterday morning on henderson chapel

road. the neighbors still can't believe it. >> i am complily upset if appalled by what happened. this is such a nice neighborhood and i can't imagine something that heinous happening across the street from here. >> i'm grateful they didn't take a life. >> the victims have shared their home over the years with young people in need of foster parenting or adoption. the investigators say at least one of the intruders may have known his victims. lawyers for george huguely are hinting they might appeal. a jury wednesday night recommended a prison sentence of 26 years for the former uva lacrosse player. convicted of second degree murder in the death of yeardley love. the judge plans to every a formal sentence in -- issue a formal sentence in april. one of the jurors said it was tough on the jury to see pictures of the crime scene and love's battered body.

this is howard bernstein. we've got several weather problems today. one is going to be the winds could gust to 50 in the metro area and of 60 west of town. a warm day with the net of showers and even some showers which could be severe. the highs into the lower and possibly middle 70s. all right howard a look at the beltway route 4 pennsylvania avenue. no problems to report here in forestville down to andrews air force base but just getting word of an accident southbound route 5 near the beltway coming out of marleau heights, an update on area roads at 6:18 coming up in my next report. mike back to you. thank you monika. it is 6:11 now. bare faced and beautiful. it's the campaign to help women feel more comfortable in their own skin. monday, the center in maryland wants women to go bare faced and show them and show the world the real them. paige morris is the director and she joins us to explain.

how did this whole thing come about and why are we connecting it? >> the renfro center foundation is -- it's an educative forum that we have in the renfre center that is -- it came about as a result of a survey that we recently did asking women how they feel about wearing makeup and how they feel about going without makeup. and it discovered that almost half of all women have very negative feelings about themselves when they don't wear make up. which is pretty alarming. >> yeah. and so we decided to do the bare faced thing to try to help quell that feeling? >> well, the -- the campaign is really in honor of the national eating disorder awareness week which is next week. we're asking all women to go without their makeup on monday. and then to take pictures of themselves and post it on their twitter or on their facebook accounts. >> and it's about trying to feel more comfortable in your

own skin with hopes of when you look in the mirror, it may or may not be connected to an eating disorder a small step in the right direction sort of thing. >> right, i guess we are not saying that when you wear makeup you are going to get an eating disorder. that's a very complex disease but we are sighing -- we're hoping to spark a conversation about what it means to have a healthy body image and that league anything in life, anything used to excess, that can certainly lead to very destructive behaviors. so if you're using your makeup to enhance your natural beauty, that's one thing. if you're using it as a mask to sort of hide behind, that's quite another. >> so now is this the first year you're doing this? or has this been going on for a while? this seems like a small step to a much bigger issue. is this your first year doing this? >> this is our first year doing this. >> so hopefully we can get some people to send our -- facebook accounts, some of your pictures if you decide to be a part of the would be great. and i'm sure you have a

in fact toward midday. southwesterly winds 14 and 19. these are the sustained winds. the gusts by noon, will probably be in the 30-mile an hour range if not more. and then this afternoon, with the threat of strong to severe storms especially south and east, that's when we could have the gusts this afternoon and for the first part of tonight oh 40, to 50 miles an hour with the higher ones west. we've been watching showers and even storms this morning out across areas in west virginia. the west virginia storms are pretty far south. i don't think they're going to be much of a problem for us. maybe in charlottesville but the showers near us they're up to the north and light ones montgomery to howard county. little heavier shower here to new market and mount airy there in southern carroll county and track main linters. richmond 61. but we're sitting at 52 this morning with good visibility. so far quiet. cloudy skies. winds out of the northeast at 9. that's all going to change as the strong confident heads this way -- cold front heads this way. by 9:00 the showers still

welcome back. coming up on 6:22 on this friday, and severe weather alert day because of the concern fortune damaging wind gusts this morn -- for damaging wind gusts this afternoon. even the threat of a severe storm later this afternoon into the evening hours. this morning on live doppler 9000 hd, some scattered showers most of that is up toward i-70. a few here just on the north side of the metro coming through areas of bethesda right now. headed toward college park and silver spring. we'll have upper 60s by noon and then the afternoon the winds pick up. could gust to 50 in the metro and 60 out west. good morning everybody. since the nationals have opened camp we've talked a lot about stephen strasburg's return, about ryan zimmerman's contract, and about whether or not bryce harper is ready for the big leagues. another guy to keep your eye on though a adam laroche. the first baseman tried to play last season and has since had

shoulder surgery. now he's not even close to 100%, but every day he's been able to throw the ball further and further. which is good progress. he's not expected to be ready for the opening day but should be back this season. the public ultimatum from maryland a. d. kevin anderson to georgetown not only affects just the men's basketball team barhops of other student -- but hundreds of other student- athletes that look forward to the rivalry that may be taken away. it creates some of the most exciting games during the season. today the men's lacrosse teams face off. it could be the last time they play each other for a very long time. >> we obviously enjoy playing georgetown. we hope that at some point we can get it back on again. but we're team players and you know whatever department is going to ask or other coaches need us to do we'll support our guys 100%. jeff jones and au eagles

welcome back. 6:27. howard bernstein with you out on the weather tore race, a live shot from hyattsville, maryland where people have been outside half the night waiting for the nike shoes from a foot locker on sale for supposedly $220 this morning. thankfully the weather is dry. just mostly cloudy skies this morning here. and we're going see some showers later there but this morning we're seeing them up north and later today the winds are doing to start to pick up. this afternoon could be a difficult day. so severe weather alert day with wind advisories going into effect as we head toward 3:00 here in the metro. noon out west. where there could be gusts 60 miles per hour with the higher elevations and the blue ridge and mountains of west virginia and western maryland. gusts up to 50 here in the washington and d.c. metros, even leesburg is in the wind

become the eighth state the allow same sex marriages. >> the state senate voted 25-22 last night. but opponents vow to fight the bill. delia goncalves joins us from the newsroom to explain. >> reporter: you know some church members can expect a petition passed around the pews this sunday because a number of priests and pastor in maryland are working the fight this bill. several bill supporters including the sponsor and governor wrote in a clause who to allow opponents to referendum vote on the measure. if it succeeded. the controversial -- the move was calculated with a calculated risk in order to get controversial bill passed in the house of delegates last week and again last night in the senate it was again a tight vote. however a referendum may prove to be trouble for president obama and pit him with the gay community and the black church. even though mr. obama has

publicly stated his views are quote evolving. >> i think the people of maryland will have that decision. no other state has approve this in referendum. i think the issues related to education, the issues related to -- religious freedom have not been resolved with this piece of legislation and i pie people have been mote -- think people will be motivated to take this to a vote. >> a referendum, what's going to happen? >> i think the people will pass it. >> reporter: talking to the governor last night in annapolis. opponents will be hard at work, they need more than 55,000 signatures in order to get the referendum vote on the november ballot. back to you mike? >> thank you delia. delia goncalves live in the newsroom this morning. we are still waiting at this point for the first plea from bradley manning, he's the army private accused in the largest leak of u.s. documents in history. he was expected to answer a plea on thursday, however he decided to delay that decision.

he also failed to say whether or not he wants to be tried by military jury or just a judge. manning allegedly gave more than 700,000 secret documents and video clips to that antisecrecy website wikileaks. the defense claim he was a troubled soldier who should not have had access to the material in the first place. we could learn today the identities of seven marines killed in a chopper crash wednesday night as two helicopters collided in a remote area near yuma's training center on the line there. the aircraft was conducting some routine night training operations when they crashed and went down. the cause of the crash is still under investigation and there were no survivors. two inches. that's how much snow the d.c. metro area has seen during this incredibly mild winter. but it's not saving the state of maryland on snow removal costs this year. the state highway administration says it spent more than $30 million of its $36 million budgeted for snow removal this year and the reason why? the agency had to dispatch crews 14 times this year to

pretreat roads and remove any snow. a spokesman for the agency told our sister station wbal radio that missing a storm is just never an option. crews have to cover 17,000- miles and they must be ready even if the forecast changes. 6:35, the holidays and all the big meals are over. but are you still having trouble losing weight? well, even though you're exercising and eating right there might be something else at play here. >> exactly, there's new research out of baltimore that suggests your personality could be making you fat. alec baldwin explain -- anita brikman explains. >> reporter: gail of virginia has tried all kinds of different diets. she loses the weight. but as soon as she goes off the plan, it comes back. >> so then i start all over again. >> reporter: but this busy 43- year-old might be able to stop the owe owe dieting -- yo-yo dieting if she get to the bottom of her emotional eating. >> i eat very fast. i eat when i'm stress. i'm a perfection else and

and it's 6:42. 52 degrees, timesaver traffic now. camden line 843 shrine ever running eight to 10 minutes late. also now an accident. it's in the tyson's area on the westbound side of route 7 right here at the beltway blocking one lane. no problems to report on the dulles toll road. we'll take a live look at 66 on the inbound side. where you've got your normal slow stuff out of centerville and then again route 50 to 13. the good news is that all the overnight construction you may have heard about. it was causing delays there. that was cleared up as well and you can see both directions of

66 running really well outside and inside the beltway. now look at the maps again on the northbound side of i-95 it's been actually lighter than normal across the occoquan river. you will hit the brakes right here in lorton. we'll take a live look in springfield on the northbound side of 95. again, looking great as you head for the inner loop of the beltway up toward annandale. 66 and teashop's. no problems to report across the american legion bridge. live look at 395 as well on the northbound side. looking good leaving duke street heading for seminary road again just the normal slow stuff. hov lanes have been great. no problems across the 14th street bridge and into the downtown. all of the corridors in downtown are good with the exception of one area. that's inbound new york avenue at the 9th street bridge. the right turn lane you've got one lane blocked there as well. no problems through cheverly or route 50. coming up in my next report, another look around the area at 6:58. but now to weather. guys? thank you monika.

howard you've been busy all morning long. >> a wind advisory into effect this morning. this morning not -- this afternoon. this morning not a lot of problems, lower hos but this afternoon, very spring like. windy, warm, maybe even some strong and severe thunderstorms. that threat would be best south and east of washington. we start with the advisory asks warnings for the winds which go into effect again 3:00 here in town. out west they start at noon and in the orange counties that's a wind warning. gusts there 50 to 60 miles an hour. here in d.c., down south. gusts 40 to 50 miles an hour and significant winds potentially darling wind. it will be possible a little bit later. the bus stop forecast looking at it. well, not too windy but it's a mild morning in most areas, scattered showers and 40s and 50s. our sunrise at 6:48. this afternoon sets able 5:55. and you're looking at the rain in morning that we've been watching mainly north of us and out into west virginia. we've had some thunderstorms but you can see as i zoom in

here towards white sulfur springs and western virginia. now -- well just a little bit of lightning and even that's going to pass south of the charlottesville area. locally on live doppler 9000 hd, some showers north of us. scattered around here and also to the south and west. south of warrenton to culpeper this stuff is pretty light here between culpeper moving east across route 29 and actually crossing route 29 as we speak. in western maryland a couple more moderate showers if you will. that's going to approach clear spring here coming out of west virginia in just a little while. hagerstown over to williamsport also a little bit of rain. temperatures big difference from the 30s in pennsylvania to the 60s from richmond down toward nosh folk right now. new york 36. there's been a little snow across parts of new england this morning, enough to delay school for an hour or two. mid 40s in sterling. low 40s up to leesburg and lovettsville. it's 52 fort belvoir and here in d.c. this morning, mostly cloudy skies. on the michael & son weather

youth of virginia speakout about the campaign in schools across the state. thank you for joining us hailey. you know what i love about this campaign and what you do is it really gets teens to take a proactive role in promoting safety habits. >> that's really our number one goal. we want to be proactive. not reactive when it comes the saving teens' lives, they really do take a creative method for this particular campaign and that's what i love about it. >> i do too. tell me about the requirements to participate. >> all right, for this campaign there are three components. you have to do a creative entry project and sign pledge cards promising to buckle up and do activesties in the schools. >> right now you are going to aflounce the top winners of the campaign and i know you separate them into categories the small and the large schools and let's start with the small. >> all right. well, the winners of the small

school category is fort descience high school in augusta county. and the large school -- is that all right for me to do this? jefferson flores in bed forest. >> i they they both did a great job but tell us what fort defiance did. >> nine people were killed in augusta county in 2010 so they decided to show their message through that. they selected nine students to represent the nine deaths. and they were put in black attire for the entire day. their obituaries were read on the morning announcements and they were not allowed to speak for the whole day. >> it really caught students' attention didn't it? >> it did. they were asked to think about how it would be without their friends in their lives. >> there's a grand prize. tell us what that is and what they need to do to get that. >> well, in order for them to be the grand prize winner, the two schools will compete in an
