thank you for joining us, i'm j.c. hayward. hold on to your hats. because we're raising the severe weather alert flag. there will be powerful intense winds today. howard has been watching his map closely. he's here with details, howard? >> jc, we're concerned about the mid to latter part of this

afternoon and then this evening when some of the winds could really get damaging, potentially 50 if not 60-mile an hour wind gusts will be moving in. on the metro itself the wind advisories will be going into effect at 3:00. those are the lighter colored counties around oh, baltimore and washington including montgomery but you get further north and west up toward frederick and leesburg out to northern talk yore county, the blue -- fauquier county, the blue ridge, the shenandoah valley, you guys are in the wind warning and that's when we're talking about the winds potentially gusting 60 miles an hour and west of the blue ridge the wind warning starts rice now at noon. all the warnings and advisories go until midnight. here's the problem a big storm here in the upper midwest. this thing's got very deep pressure and once the front passes, that pressure gradient is going to drive these powerful winds. in the meantime, tornado watches south of us, this is like a springtime setup even though it's february. we've got a springtime storm on our hands. and out to the west now just

some lighter showers. nothing too heavy here up and down 81 from south of martinsburg and coming to charlestown right now. through winchester going down to woodstock and new market, virginia headed to strasburg as well. so that's the only showers we have now. so keep the rain gear handy. watch the winds and look at the temperatures before i go. thought we'd be in the 70s this morning when i made my forecast. i think the mid- to upper 60s but look how close the warmth is. tap man hock airport is 77. they're on the way to 80 this afternoon and that warmth is going to fuel strong thunderstorms which might make it to southern maryland as well. so that's another problem that we may have to deal with as we get into the latter part of the afternoon. i'll come back and we'll look at some other maps for you and talk about the weekend because we have some colder temps returning. jc back to you. thank you very much howard. well, a shoe sensation is sweeping the country. nike's release of some new exclusive glow in the dark sneakers is sparking frenzy and frustration. i want you to take a look at

the line outside prince george's county plaza. in hyattsville, people began lining up last night to get a chance at the nike air foam galaxy shoe, however thigh went away disappointed. >> pair of nike shoes limited edition. everyone wanted to get them. i was trying to get them in line. >> so what happened? >> we waited until about 6:30 in the morning. and finally somebody from foot locker decided to come out and say that they were not selling the shoes no more. >> well, the scene at prince george's plaza was repeated all over the country. between 800 to 1,000 people lined up to get the shoes in tampa, florida. a minor scuffle break out and there was a similar scene in orlando, florida. police were called in to break up a large crowd there.

the $220 sneakers can become quite an investment. one pair was listed on ebay for $50,000. and a man placed an ad on craigslist. he offered to swap his chevy cavalier for a pair of the sneakers. virginia governor bob mcdonnell went on the road today about his seemingly change of heart when it comes to the state's controversial abortion bill. the bill quickly garnered national scrutiny after it was discovered that the measure would require women to undergo an invasive vaginal ultrasound before having an abortion. the governor pulled his backing of the bill off but he insists that it is not a reversal of his position. >> i merely suggested the other day to the general assembly that to address both medical and legal constitutional issues that had arisen during the

course of the process, that would be some amendments they ought to adopt. >> the bill now calls for women to be offered an abdominal ultrasound and be able to view that ultrasound before an abortion. seven other states have similar mandates. well, virginia reached a deal with online giant amazon.com. to start checking sales taxes. the -- collecting sales tangs. the agreement goes into effect next year. that's when the online seller plans to open two new division centers in the old dominion. they approved the measure this week authorizing the state to require an out of state sellers with distribution facilities to collect sales tax. under the new law, virginia could collect up to $24 million each year. maryland is poised to become the eighth state plus the district of columbia to legalize same sex marriage. supporters of the bill celebrated last night. vote in the senate, the measure

passed 25-22. nearly a week after it barely passed in the house of delegates. >> for my family it's going to mean a degree of safety, of confidence, of security that we know that we will have the government behind us. >> my faith tells me that this is the right thing to do. this is not about legislating our faith. this is very much about protecting equality and justice for all families. >> many church leaders and republicans are hoping to bring the measure to a referendum vote in november. well, the man who provided the gun that was used to kill a maryland state trooper in prince george's county has been sentenced to five years in prison. trooper wesley brown was gunned down outside a forestville applebee's restaurant in 2010. the shooter, cornelius williams was convicted last week of first degree murder. 29-year-old anthony millton agreed to testify against

williams in exchange for that five year sentence. he was angry because he had been thrown out of the restaurant and returned to seek revenge. williams will be sentenced in may. penn state says it has received a federal subpoena related to the jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal. federal prosecutors are seeking information regarding sandusky and his charity organization for children. the former penn state assistant coach is accused of molesting at least ten boys and he denies those charges. world opposition is growing to the deadly regime of syrian president bashar al-assad. secretary of state hillary clinton is meeting with officials from 70 countries in tunisia to discuss ways to end that violence. tina krause has the latest developments now from london. >> reporter: hundreds of protestors loyal to syrian president bashar al-assad tried to storm an international conference in tunisia.

foreign ministers from more than 50 countries are meeting to demand an end to the violence in syria. u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton is among those at the friends of syria gathering. she's calling for a cease fire to allow humanitarian aid into the country. and pressing for new sanctions and travel bans. gunfire gunfire [ sound of gunfire ] , rebels are locked in a fierce battle with syrian government forces, they're asking international leaders to send them more weapons to help take down the assad regime. activists say syrian troops executed at least 18 people in a village of central via friday including at least -- syria friday including at least five children. the humanitarian chief in the u.s. says the situation is deteriorating and the syrian government is blocking aid. >> we have -- that appear to be under siege and what we're desperate to do is to try to

get a proper assessment of what's going on so we can get urgently needed supplies in. >> reporter: thousands have died in the uprisings that began nearly a year ago. secretary of state clinton says assad will have even more blood on his hands if he doesn't let aid through. tina krause, cbs news. >> russia and china are not taking part in the talks after rejecting an earlier proposal to end the government crack down on the opposition. caught on tape a car chase ended in a -- chase that ended in a hail of bullets in los angeles. police chosed in on the -- closed in on the suspected cash jacker at a gas station they opened fire and he was shot and killed when he appeared to have a gun. the closest bystander hid behind a car and no one else was injured. in texas an undercover police sting nets a police officer. the stakeout involved the refrigerator and the deer park police department break room. the chief authorized the

installation of a hidden camera to find who had been stealing items out of the refrigerator: well, three weeks of surveillance caught officer kevin yang red-handed. >> part of that if it's not yours don't take it. you really create a lot of anger in a workplace and frustration. >> officer yang told his supervisors that he simply took it upon himself to keep the refrigerator clean. well, they didn't buy it. he received a 30 day unpaid suspension and he's facing misdemeanor theft charges. still ahead on 9news now at noon, an american detained in cuba receives a high level visit from two u.s. senators. we'll have more on that story when we come back. i'm tara mergener at the white house. protests turn leddy. the story coming -- deadly. the story coming up.

at least nine more people are dead in violent protests in afghanistan. outrage is growing after the burning of korans at the u.s. air base despite apologies from president obama. u.s. and afghan officials. tara mergener has the latest. >> reporter: thousands of afghans took to the streets.

launching a fourth day of deadly protests over the burning of korans at a u.s. military base. afghan security forces fired their guns into the air in kabul trying to get the crowds to break up. they were on high alert. dressed in riot gear, and expecting angry crowds after friday prayers. some of the demonstrations happened outside the air base, that's where the korans were burned tuesday. an afghan soldier killed two american soldiers. the top u.s. commander in afghanistan visited that base telling u.s. forces that now is not the time for revenge. and he asked afghans to exercise restraint and patience. >> we admit our mistakes. we ask for forgiveness. we seek to move on. >> reporter: the president also apologized for the incident in a letter to afghan president hamid karzai. the white house says president obama's main concern is the safety of americans in

afghanistan. u.s. officials insist the copies of muslim holy books for prisoners at the air base were sent by mistake to a place used to burn garbage. u.s. defense secretary leon panetta ordered a full investigation into how that happened and he promises they'll hold the individuals involved accountable. afghan president karzai has called for calm as well but the messages from world leaders are falling on deaf ears. tara mergener for cbs news, the white house. a delegation of afghan religious leaders issued a statement yesterday. also calling for an end to the violence. and saying they expect the people responsible would be prosecuted through the u.s. military court system. a high level meeting between cold war enemies in cuba. senators patrick leahy and richard shelby reveal they met with president raul castro yesterday and they discussed the case of detained american subcontractor alan gross.

gross is serving a 15 year jail term for bringing communications equipment on to the island. leahy says he also met gross, however, he was unable to persuade president castro to release him. coming up next, howard has the -- forecast. >> jc, sun trying to come out a little bit now. look at the satellite and radar loop before the break. the clouds and the showers and storms are building to the west and southwest. it will get rough in spots this afternoon. i'll tell you about the severe weather threat and the wind damage threat and your weekend forecast when we return.

you know, and it's better to let just the plows and salt do the work. >> residents in chicago woke up to a sloppy slushy mix this morning. rain alternated with snow in the overnight hours and then it turned to snow only. of course hundreds of flights in and out of chicago were canceled. >> you know in chicago itself they had maybe just a few inches but in a few suburbs, 8, 8.5. one of their biggest snows of the season also. a lot of the country has really been struggling to get know and that's made a lot of people happy and snow lovers not so. >> but right here? we're loving it. >> it's spring like today. and we -- probably not going to get into the mid 70s low to mid- 70s like i was thinking this

morning. still well in the 60s and we have 70s south of town. and those areas south. you're more likely to see these severe storms and everybody's going to see some winds starting up over the next few hours. so the winds later today tonight, they are really going to be howling. let's start with the look at the day planner because we do expect the lull that we have now to be replaced by showers and storms as we get into the middle of the afternoon. temperatures will be climbing into the upper 50s next hour. if not 60ish in spots. mid 60s at 3:00. i think we'll make a run for the upper 60s here in washington. and with a 70 south and maybe low 60s north of d.c., that cold wedge got in place and just was very tough to dislodge this morning. still some showers and storms at 5:00. best chance south and east of town for severe weather. and then by 7:00, we're windy. partly cloudy. 59. sustained winds out of the west near 30 miles an hour. we could be seeing gusts later this afternoon and this evening close to 50 miles an hour. and that's why we have a high wind advisory going into effect

at 3:00. winds again could gust to 50. out to the west, so you get to the blue ridge and actually you get into frederick and loudoun counties, a high wind warning is in effect and that will be potentially meaning gusts to 60 miles an hour. we're in a lull now. had some showers this morning. look at the showers and storms redeveloping out to the west. the lightning flashing there and that's the white specks. then i'll zoom in and you can see what's coming out of west virginia. just south of harrisonburg. over to live doppler 9000 hd, and check this out from bentonville down to luray. just south of new market. these are some heavy showers here, wouldn't be surprised if lightning starts popping. that's telling me the storm is growing a little bit and getting a little bit stronger. you folks in summeryville up to front royal, flint hill, this is going to be on top of you in the next 20 to 30 minutes and then fauquier county as well and it could be an activity afternoon. 77 in tappahannock but 66 in fredericksburg and we're stuck in the 50s and only in the 40s to our north. sunshine a little bit of it out

there with the overcast skies on the michael & son weather camera but a thin overcast right now and watch temperature 53 -- a temperature of 53 degrees here in washington. 80 in norfolk. all the 730 8:00 0-degree south. no wonder we got tornado watches. spring like here. the energy's in place and south of town, could be very rough this afternoon. we're looking at the severe threat here south and east of town. southern maryland you may get into some strong storms too. isolated tornadoes. rich mondays and norfolk, we're going to have to watch this very carefully. as far as the forecast is concerned on the next seven days, we'll start with the three day for you. we've got temperatures in the upper 60s today. severe weather alert day for the winds. potentially damaging winds this afternoon and this evening. we'll be in the 30s to around 40 tonight. 48 tomorrow with maybe a passing flurry, still windy. gusts over 30. sundays cool, not bad. 49 with a lot less wind and then we're back @ 60s -- in the 60s by tuesday. we've got more on 9news now at noon coming up right after this.

i can't tell you how honored i am to be with our special guest today. he is a member of the famous tuskegee airmen of world war ii and of course we know what they did for our country during that war. we know what they did for pilots and we certainly know what they did for african- american men. i would just like to say thank you. thank you, thank you. please, please meet colonel bob

friend. who is here and you're one of the oldest surviving members of the tuskegee airmen. >> one of several. yes. >> you look gorgeous, i'm going tootling uh-uh light -- tell you that you look mighty young to me. >> thank you. >> i have to ask you about the george lucas film "red tails." what did you think about the movie? >> i think it's a fair rendition of what took place in that war. >> you think -- >> yes, i think that -- he did a fine job with a tough problem. >> it was a tough problem. it was so difficult for him to get this movie produced. and he was just determined -- >> he was that. and he exercised not to -- i like -- individuals so much, but to take the experiences of groups and put them together

and then assign it to someone first. >> it's a beautiful ill ifment. i know you must be proud of it. you were i believe the wingman for colonel benjamin davis? >> i flew with him for most of the time when he flew. >> what was it like? i just want to find out from you, what was it like during that time? of course affairsed a lot of ray -- you faced a lot of racism here in the united states but what were the men feeling when they went overseas representing our country and flying and fighting. >> i think most of them concentrated mostly on winning the war. and to do the best job that we could possibly do in those assignments that we were given. >> and your training was so specialized. i mean everyone knows that the tuskegee iremen -- i mean you set some records during world war ii. that other pilots couldn't compete or compare with. >> to some extent, yes. >> well, let me just say -- it is an honor to spend some time
