5:04 pm
>> i'm still trying to figure this out. let me break it down for you. nike is about to launch its limited edition slew collection. it's coinciding with the all star game this weekend. the collection includes this guy right here. is this the zoom kd4 shoe. here's the lebron 9. but this is the crown jewel of the collection. the foam 1galexy. it's not being sold online. it's only sold in stores for $220 a pop. but, right now you can get it online only on sites like ebay. this pair starting bid was $2,000. now look at this. it is up to $20,000. >> it was packed. police everywhere. >> up to a thousand people stood in line overnight outside the mall at prince georges in hyattsville. >> what is it about these
5:05 pm
sneakers that will make you do crazy things to get them? >> when they're on my feet, everybody looking at them. that's the best part. >> for the men, these elusive glow in the dark sneakers are a status symbol. >> i want to brag. that's basically what it is. >> for the ladies, it's all about money. >> you can buy them here for $200 and sell them online. >> foot locker store canceled the release due to safety concerns. >> the crowd remains on the scene and in anticipation that the store may change their mind. >> but not calvin butler. >> you were here last night at 11:00, drove down to raleigh and then came back and you still got nothing? >> still don't have any shoes. >> his buddy who stayed in line in maryland didn't get the nike's they wanted, but they did drop $180 on the lebron 9. >> love of my life. i'm sleeping with these tonight. >> did more women come up to you when you are wearing these
5:06 pm
shoes? >> i spent all my money on these. >> this group, which drove down from new york city also scored the lebron's, but they aren't taking any chances. they switched out their bags for these red ones out of fear they would get mugged. >> really? >> just for these shoes? >> yup. >> fortunately, nobody at that mall got mugged, but the police department did make one arrest for disorderly conduct. now, throughout that story, derek here, i know you have really been wanting those shoes. >> i mean, wonderful nike's, that's what i have in mind. >> if you want those shoes, your best bet would be to follow nike's twitter feed. the latest stores that still have them in stock, although there haven't been any. >> thank you, kristen, appreciate that. back to you in the studio. >> we have an update on a home invasion robbery that happened in bowie. police say a car taken during that robbery has been

recovered. the 1999 gold jaguar was found in upper marlboro this morning. no one was inside. police are still looking for two men who tied up three people at the home on henderson chapel lane. the men took money along with the jaguar. no one was hurt. >> the george huguely trial might be over, but one of the jurors is speaking out saying he will be haunted by the yeardley love murder for ever. ian is a university of virginia professor. he was on the panel that sentenced huguely for 26 years. he says being a juror was one of the most difficult things he has ever done. he felt like he built a relationship with the families during the trial and adds that george huguely's statement was painful, but huguely bears responsibility for what happened. >> when we came out with our verdict, both times, i was not afraid to look at george and look at him and i think that's because i was confident that
5:08 pm
what we did was right. >> he feels at peace with what the 12 jurors decided. the manassas woman accused of being the so-called blond bandit pleaded not guilty. police have linked stephanie to a series of bank robberies in maryland and northern virginia. the crime spree lasted 13 days. in one case, police say she carjacked a woman at knife point at tyson's two galleria. in new jersey, prosecutors began laying out their case against a former rutgers student accused of spying on his gay roommate having sex with another man. that roommate, tyler clemente later killed himself. >> reporter: anita, today in court, we heard the prosecution and the defense give their versions of their cases against robbie to the jurors. now robbie is a college student here at rutgers who used his dorm room web cam to spy on his

roommate. his roommate later found out and took his own life. >> robbie faces 15 criminal charges, including a hate crime related to the suicide of his gay college roommate, tyler climente. julia told jurors robbie wanted to victimize him and rob him of his dignity when he used a web cam to spy on him with another man. >> acts were not a prank. they were not an accident. these acts were purposeful. they were intentional. and they were planned. >> robbie sent an instant message to a high school friend, telling him about the sexual encounter. that friend was the first witness and read the message to the court. >> i went into his room and turned on my web cam from there and i saw him making out with some dude. >> two days later, he asked if he could have the room for himself. he invited a friend to watch on the web cam.

5:11 pm
ask, hey, why did you do that? >> but up next, another abortion bill goes down in defeat in richmond.
5:12 pm
5:13 pm
today, the virginia senate struck down one of two bills that would require a woman to have an ultrasound before having an abortion. fauquier county republican said she was troubled not only by the original provision that required transvaginal ultrasounds burks ultrasounds, but the state would subject a woman to have a test. removed from both bills, but today he did not reverse his position. >> i merely suggested that to address both medical and legal issues that had risen during the course of the committee process that this would be a measure, this would be some amendments that they aught to adopt. >> both governor mcdonnell and maryland governor debated some of the nation's top issues during a state solution conference this morning at the museum. today's face to face
5:14 pm
meeting comes after last night's vote that could make maryland the 8th state, plus the district to legalize same sex marriage. >> supporters of the bill celebrated last night's tight victory in the senate. the vote came nearly a week after the measure barely passed the house of delegates. governor o'malley promised to sign it, the bill does allow church leaders and republicans the opportunity to bring it to a referendum vote this november. >> and governor martin o'malley will be a guest on face the nation. governor bob shaefer of face the nation. good to have you with us, bob. big vote to approve gay marriage in maryland. everybody is talking about it, even nationally. a week ago, the economy was all anybody wanted to talk about. >> well, i think in the end, derek, this election is still going to be decided on the economy, but the social issues do keep cropping up. we are seeing that out in michigan where we are having the next primary and we are certainly seeing it here in
5:15 pm
both maryland and virginia. as i understand it now, this gay marriage thing, even though it's past will be a referendum coming up. that means everybody will get to take a stand on it whether they want to or not, including president obama, i assume. this is going to be a part of the campaign. down in virginia, of course, the governor down there came out for amendmenting that ultrasound thing. i'm not sure i still understand exactly what he's done, but clearly he is moderating his position on that. we never question people's motives, derek, but it has been noted that virginia governor might be on the list of people to be considered as a republican vice presidential candidate. he might want a more moderate position going into the general election. >> and we also want to mention the fact that you have chris cristie, the governor of new jersey on your shoulders. he's a backer of mitt romney. romney had a pretty good week and rick santorum had a tough week. >> yeah, i think that's right.
5:16 pm
but you know, while the governor of new jersey really is a romney backer, a lot of people are saying chris cristie should have run and i'll tell you one thing. if mitt romney doesn't win this thing in michigan, the place where he grew up, i think you're going to see new pressure on chris cristie to get into this thing and there are a number of states out there where the filing hasn't closed yet. someone could get in and win a substantial number of delegates. i'm not sure. well, it would be impossible, i think, to win the nomination before the convention if a person is just getting into the race. but they could certainly win it enough to keep somebody else from getting the nomination. if it goes to the convention, it's anybody's guess as to who winds up with that nomination. >> certainly make things very, very interesting, perhaps more so than they have been in a long time. bob, thank you so much. we look forward to seeing you
5:17 pm
on sunday. >> okay. winds are the story at this hour. >> thunderstorms are pretty much gone now, although technically, southern maryland is under a tornado watch until 8:00. but winds are the story and hopefully you had some precautions. if it's trash night, put your address on your trash can, because it's going to be down the street. let's look outside. we time lapsed this for you. this is brought to you by michael and son. we'll put this into motion. you're looking west and we had some showers roll through here, but the heaviest activity was actually south of town in charles county and st. mary's county. but we're left with a few clouds and really the winds have not picked up yet. but they will pick up as we go through, say, the next several hours and really pick up as we get into the 9:00, 10:00 hour. 55 downtown. never made it that warm today. it was 70s to the south, but only in the upper 50s. the winds now north, northwest at 12. pressure beginning to rise.

hurt. >> outside of boston, dramatic surveillance video of a truck crashing through the front of a convenience store. three men were standing in line when the out of control truck slammed into the pantry. stopping just inside the store. only one of them had to go to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. police say the 43-year-old driver suffered a medical emergency, which caused him to lose control. he has not been charged. and check out this nasty wreck in dallas. an 18 wheeler right there crosses three lanes of traffic. pushes an suv through the concrete barrier and the truck lands on a car. the driver of that car is in intensive care. police believe the truck driver's speed caused him to lose control of his rig. >> now this next video may be harder to watch. >> a driver and passenger with only seconds to spare narrowly escape an on coming train. >> we take you to delaware on the campus of the university of

5:30 pm
charles county where the severe storms that proceeded our windy night dumped hail on to parts of waldorf. topper is in the weather center with this severe day of weather. top. >> the winds are beginning to pick up west of us. there's one storm i'm concerned about, lesli. we'll show you live doppler 9,000. this storm has hail in it. we showed it to you a minute ago. we have left over showers, parts of montgomery county and especially east of i-95 95 toward annapolis and heading toward la plata. this one storm is, i'm pretty sure hail in it. we are looking at hail to the northwest of st. leanard. this is definitely hail that is just to the southeast of prince frederick. so right now, we don't see a warning on that. we have to turn our attention to our winds. just how windy it's going to be and for how long this weekend. anita. >> thanks, topper. even a young child can tell you the red light means it's time
5:31 pm
to stop. why do so many bicyclists have a tough time obeying that law? riding a bike, of course, is a great option and getting around such a traffic heavy city like d.c. >> what cyclists would admit if they were honest about it is ignoring the traffic signals, that's not such a great option and as ken shows us, it happens way too often. >> the district is known to have some of the worse drivers in the country. now you can add this city bicyclist to the list. >> everyone is in a hurry. >> it's illegal to run red lights on a bike, not to mention dangerous. that's exactly what we saw in dupont circle. this cyclist seemed to be more interested in showing off for our camera than obeying the red light. 9news photographer strapped on a helmet cam to get a closer look, but check out what we saw from another camera. james stopped at the light and gets past by a daring cyclist whom never stopped.
5:32 pm
this guy speeds through a red light and darts in front of a metro bus that narrowly misses him. >> this happens all the time, but what is just as interesting is the reason some of these bicycle lists disobey the road rules. >> we are doing a story on bicyclists. did you realize you just ran like three of them? >> i don't pay attention. >> i saw you run that light. do you do that a lot? >> i don't want to talk about it on camera. >> i definitely know the rules and i'm thankful. >> not all cyclists are as unapologetic. in fact, this rider says he makes it a point to be responsible. >> i want to be respected by motorists when they are out driving because they can easily harm and kill me if they don't respect me. >> pedestrians and drivers alike say they are constantly having near misses and some are left trying to make sense of
5:33 pm
this disregard for safety. >> there's a sense of self- importance. like the universe revolves around them. traffic safety is a community activity. >> all right, here's a warning. it's also illegal to blow past a red light on a bicycle in maryland and in virginia. and if you are popped by the police doing that here in the district, you can be fined $25. just so you know, d.c. police plan on launching an initiative in march to combat this problem. in northwest d.c., 9news now. >> yeah, and since ken's story first aired, we have gotten loads of reaction on our facebook page. let's just say, cycling has a pr problem around here. rob says i call them entitled bikers. they run the streets inside without thinking of others. james kaine writes, i see them running stop signs and red lights all the time, even on busy four or six lane parkways. and pamela comments, i think bicyclists should be fined as much as drivers for violating the rules of the road.
5:34 pm
here's some good news, there will be a place where cyclists can ride as much as they want and as fast as they want. plans are in the works to build a cycling track in southwest d.c. the washington post reports the d.c. drone wants to build the track at buzzard's point that is just off south capital. there will be racing events as well as classes. still needs to raise about $300,000. so this is not going to happen next week. >> drivers around dupont circle could run into delays. they are being turned off, so the technicians can upgrade the traffic control system. officers will be there to direct traffic while the signals are out, but drivers are being warned to approach dupont circle with caution. you might want to consider alternative routes. a commuter alert as well for drivers in northern virginia. this morning a new traffic signal in tyson's corner replaced from route 7 to the northbound lanes of the
5:35 pm
beltway. and this weekend, there will be other new twists and turns due to the express lane's project in fairfax county. a rant from the outer loop of beltway to interstate 66 will go back to being two lanes instead of one. and an additional fifth lane will be added to i-66 west. work on the so-called hot lanes is expected to be finished by the end of the year, but be careful around tyson's corner. >> a member of the d.c. council is exposing under age drinking, quote, remarkable. and councilman jim graham followed up by asking tough questions at a human services committee hearing. andrea mccarren joins us more with what has transpired. >> i have been called worse, but some interesting information came out of this hearing. first, abra's director acknowledged that last weekend's arrest of the owner of town square market was the first arrest by metropolitan police of a liquor store operator. in the last 14 months, we have
5:36 pm
