good evening. police in montgomery county are searching for the driver who ran over and killed a man in rockdale this morning before fleeing the scene. ken is live along the 4700 block every norbeck road where this happened. ken. >> reporter: andrea, we hear of these types of tragedies happening too often. unfortunately it's hand again, this time the victim is 24-year- old alonzo rodriguez of bethesda. according to police, the 24- year-old had been riding in a car with friends when he got out of that car along norbeck road near westbury. that happened at about 2:20 in morning. they say with an hour later a passerby called 911 to report a man lying on the road. when emergency respondsers got here, rodriguez was already dead. it's believed the hit-and-run driver killed the 24-year-old sometime between 2:20 and 3:24 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of

norbeck road. montgomery county police do need your help, asking anyone who may have been in the area at that time, they're hoping somebody saw something and that they can call them if give this. a tip they need to try to find whoever is responsible for this. now, earlier today we did have an opportunity to speak to the victim's family. they were too desperate to go on cancel are but they're asking for the public's help. they hope somebody can provide that tip that would lead they've to rodriguez's killer. >> let's hope some thank you, ken. two young volunteer firefighters are recovering at washington hospital center this evening. they suffered critical burns while battling a house fire in prince george's county. as armando reports, the injuries were caused by a fiery explosion. >> every one every us know every time we go out the door, it could be the last time. but we also know we're here to serve the citizens. >> reporter: this house fire in riverdale heights sent seven

public servants to the hospital last night after a fireball tore through the home. >> i'm what firefighters described as a blowtorch coming out the front door. >> nearly 70 firefighters trying to extinguish the blaze. >> attention all units -- >> two volunteer firefighters were badly hurt. one suffered burns to his respiratory system. the other has burns over nearly half of his body. >> they have still both critical. however, both alert and able to communicate with us. one is intubated, he is actually in good spirits, and has been writing on a tablet to his parents. >> company seven i would say everybody is very somber right now. we have unfortunately been through this two other times in the past five years. everybody knows what this is like, and it's very difficult,

but they're also holding their own. >> a review is now underway in to how this firefighting operation went down to where the fire engines were placed on the street to how the firefighters entered this burning home. communication between the different units involved and of course what happened when the fireball took out some basement of this home and injured the seven firefighters inside. any lessons learned will be applied the next time these brave public servants go into harm's way. and the dc firefighters burn foundation has stepped in to assist both the families and the injured firefighters as they begin their rehabilitation. the firefighters are 21 and 22 years old. for more information on how you can help, just go to our website, wusa9.com. a local marine is among those killed in the deadliest military aviation training accident in years. captain michael quinn of virginia was among seven marines to died in wednesday's crash near the california-

arizona border. it happened when two helicopters collided in midair during a training exercise. the 28-year-old marine was the pilot of the huey chopper that collided with the cobra helicopter. quinn joined the marines in 2006. he twice received the navy and marine corps achievement medal as well as the national service defense and global war on terrorism service medals. a gunman has killed two american service men inside a government building in kabul. they're believed to be a colonel and major in the u.s. military. the shootings took place as violence gripped the country for a fifth day. er over the burning of holy book at a nato base. the taliban is claiming responsible for the attack inside the interior ministry. >> what we confirm so far is that in the inner city of kabul, often individual opened fire on the -- opened fire on the members of the international security assistance source.

child molestation. he was sentenced friday after entering an alfred plea. that's when a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence for conviction. shelton was the pastor of the community church of god from 1995 to 2000. 9news now interviewed two of his alleged victims who were 8 and 12 years old at the time of the alleged abuse. his arrest raised troubling questions, including why that church brought him to virginia from a congregation in frankfurt, illinois after muscle. allegations of sexual abuse involving boys surfaced there. straight ahead on 9news now, a promise penalty in world leader is hospitalized, prion update on nelson mandela. and dc residents come out in force to get help making an upcoming deadline a little less taxing. we'll explain after this.

former south african president nelson mandela is hospitalized this weekend for treatment of stomach pain. the 93-year-old leader was admitted to a hospital in johannesburg this morning. government officials appeared on television there, saying mandela's hospital admissions was not an emergency and surgery would not be involved. he has been in poor health since a week in the hospitalized over a year ago with respiratory problems. he has not appeared in public since. some d.c. residents got help in filing their tax returns today. congresswoman eleanor holmes norton hosted her 12th annual tax fair today at the washington convention center. tax professionals were on hand from the i.r.s. and the d.c. office of tax and revenue to help residents prepare their basic tax returns. the free event also featured representatives from a variety of financial service institutions, to provide information on low cost credit union, banking and loans, college tuition planning and assistance, mortage help, and credit counseling. coming up, a breezy and
