2012. good morning everybody. so good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. we begin in afghanistan this morning. early today a suicide bomber killed at least nine people in eastern afghanistan. it's the latest in the escalating furor over the burning of islamic holy books. we have more in washington. good morning. >> good morning terrell. the explosion took place at an airport. while there's no official indication that is connected to the deadly riots, the taliban has claimed responsibility. that complicates efforts in the country. a car bomb exploded outside the airport early monday. afghan police say it killed several people, including two guards and a soldier. the taliban claimed responsibility and said it was revenge fort burning of quran. >> it follows days of deadly riots across the country. angry afghans have been marching through the streets and clashing with police over the handling of the muslim holy book.

the burning was a accident. >> we deeply regret the incident that has led to these protests. we are condemning it in the strongest possible terms. >> the united states launched a full investigation. commanders say it cannot derail the progress that's been made since u.s. forces invaded afghanistan in 2001. u.s. forces are working side by side with troops as they prepare to take control of the country next year. >> this is not the time to decide we're done here. we've got to redouble our efforts, we've got to create a situation in which al qaeda is not coming back. >> but nato pulled all foreign advisers from afghan ministries in kabul. it was a precautionary measure after two military officers were killed over the weekend. afghan police have identified the shooter and there's a manhunt under way. since the quran burnings came to light last week, more than 30 people have been killed in riots

and protests. protests and riots including four u.s. soldiers. terrell? >> in washington for us. dart i, thank you. pakistani officials began tearing down the compound on saturday and finished this morning. bin laden lived there for years. u.s. commandos raided the base may 2nd and shot bin laden to death. the remains of the last american soldier who was missing in iraq have been identified. staff sergeant ahmed -- was kidnapped in october o of 2006 when he sneaked off base to visit his wife in baghdad. the army has no further details surrounding his death. to syria. anti-government activists say troops are bombarding the city of homs with rockets and artillery this morning. human rights groups say 59 people were killed yesterday as syrians voted on a new constitution. the u.s. and other western nations call the vote a sham.

the u.s. and some 60 other nations tried to come up with a strategy to push assad from power. hillary clinton characterized the vote as a cynical ploy talked to wyatt andrews about the situation in syria during a stop in morocco. >> with the violence continuing in syria and assad refusing to allow medicine to reach the injured, secretary of state hillary clinton in an interview with cbs news, argues the united states is doing what it can but within limits. >> i am incredibly sympathetic to the calls of somebody do something. but it is also important to stop and ask what that is and who is going to do it. >> what to do about assad was supposed to be answered last friday when a global conference called -- demanded that assad step aside. several arab countries, starting with the saudis argued for -- the obama administration is

no problems on any of the northern corridors heading down to the beltway. coming up in my next report 295 once again. back to you. thanks. we'll see you in a bit. sad news. 17-year-old rico webb, an offensive lineman for the school, went to the hospital saturday with chest pains and died yesterday. the crowd was cheering we love rico for most of the game last night. the school plans a prayer service at 8:30 this morning. two firefighters injured in the blaze friday in prince george's county are back at the riverdale fire station. >> they still have a long road to recovery. matt has more. >> reporter: lieutenant michael maples has fought dozens of fires and dealt with all kinds of situations during his nine years as a volunteer

firefighter. the last two with the riverdale fire department. but what happened two nights ago in riverdale heights, was an inch tilely new and extremely painful experience for the 24-year-old firefighter. you see lieutenant naples was one of seven firefighters with three different department dollars who were injured, two of them critically, when a fire tore through a vacant house. lieutenant naples suffered serious burns on both sides of his face and tore ligaments in his shoulder. when something in the house fell on him. could have been sheetrock and metal. too dark, too hot, kind of get it off me and get it out of there kind of stuff. a total of seven firefighters responded to friday night's blaze. four were injured. but tonight, all four have been released from the hospital. >> very painful. >> reporter: 19-year-old michael mcclary was another of the
