described as a junior here opened fire on a group of students sitting at a table. >> parents cried and hugged their children outside chardon high school after a student opened fire in the school cafeteria during breakfast. one student is dead and four injured. >> we feel so disheartened. >> a teacher may have saved lives by running after the suspect. >> one of the teachers happened to chase the shooting suspect out of the building. he immediately, at that point, our officers entered the building, went to the five injured students that were injured and got ems in there behind them. >> police say there was one shooter and he turned himself in. students who witnessed the attack said there was chaos with people screaming and running down the halls. 1100 students are enrolled at chardon high school. 30 miles outside cleveland. parents describe it as a tight knit community where everybody knows each other. as s.w.a.t. teams rush to the scene, teachers ushered the students

out of the building and into the elementary school across the street. parents lined up outside to collect their kids. >> i hope every parent, if you haven't hugged or kissed your kid, take that time. >> victims are four bays and a girl. one witness said he recognized the shooter as an outcast who may have been bullied. since he is a juvenile, police have not identified the suspect. they say they have his handgun and running a background check to trace where and when he got it. >> two of the four shooting victims remain in critical condition. police have the high school sealed off and the campus will be closed tomorrow. that's the latest from here in ohio, derek. >> manuel, thank you for that. now, of course the big question everybody is asking today is, were there warning signs? was there something this young man did that could have tipped us off that this was going to happen before it did indeed happen? the alleged shooter was reportedly active on social media like facebook and twitter. scott broom is here to talk

about that and what we know. >> because there are some witness reports that tj lane did tweet about his intentions and there are pictures out there on twitter circulating globally, showing him holding guns. they have not been authenticated. be aware of what you forward to your friends. t.j. lane was on facebook with some chilling thoughts. >> tj lane's facebook page includes a dark and rambling letter. including the lines now, feel death, not just mocking you. and later saying, die, all of you. a witness to the shooting is reported by the associated press, told reporters that lane had posted to twitter about his intentions to attack, but was ignored. it sparked a vigorous discussion in the twitter today, no one looked into it, did we learn nothing from columbine? less son, when a student says he's going to bring a gun to school, you must always take him seriously.

many more are calling for metal detectors at all schools. life online is filled with threats among kids for the whole world to see. word searches turned up the following tweets from kids. i will bring a gun to class and shoot you, expletive, with a hash tag, stop over achieving, tweeted one user today. i want to kill everyone at school right now. you're all annoying. and another girl apparently tweeting about her bullying of a boy, said, i feel like, and she named the boy here, he would bring a gun to school and if he did, i would be the first one to get shot. i'm mean as, she used an expletive to him, lol. i asked high school kids today if they would tell anyone if they saw tweets like these. >> you don't know. that's the thing. i feel like it depends how well you know the person. like if you know the person and they are joking around, like oh, i'm going to kill all you, if you know the person well enough to know that they are kidding, you are serious. it's all right.

information when it becomes available. again, a live look from sky 9 at this fire in burtonsville. lesli. >> a georgetown university student is injured over the weekend in a vicious sexual assault just one block away from campus. it happened early sunday morning near the intersection of 34th street and n street in northwest washington. that's where kristin fisher joins us live with the latest on the investigation. kristen. >> well, the suspect is still at large. the victim is recovering. but people here are really worried, especially because of where this happened. right in front of me is an elementary school, four blocks this way, that's where wisconsin avenue is and that's where all the popular bars and restaurants are. a block in this direction is campus. so this sexual assault literally took place at the intersection of where campus meets the rest of the community. >> on the weekends if i go out, then this is the route i take. >> i live right here. it makes the walk three to four

times a day. >> students at georgetown university are rattled that something so violent that happened here on a street that is one of the main gateways to campus. there's an emergency call box on the corner. >> that makes me nervous. i know i live with four other girls and we are 20, 21. we go to bars. >> in fact, it happened around the time the bars are closing. just after 2:00 a.m. sunday, a young man beat up and sexually assaulted a female student. the suspect got away, but he is described as being a white male between 18 and 22 years old about 6 feet tall and with short brown hair. the university sent out an alert tosser student, but many say they want more information. >> i was surprised, because they didn't include many details. >> most likely a student or is it most likely a person from outside of campus? what are the leads? what's going on? >> you want more details from the school. >> in the meantime, campus

police are increasing patrols and students are being urged to not walk alone. >> definitely being aware. taking the school transportation whenever possible and not walking alone. >> you get the sense that it's a safe place to be, but apparently it's not. >> less than 24 hours after that sexual assault, two other georgetown university students were robbed at gunpoint just a few blocks away from here. police are still searching for those two suspects, but so far, they do not believe that these two crimes are connected. back to you. >> all right, we know they want to hopefully find those people and find them soon. >> we have new information on the death of a rising football star. determined rico webb died over the weekend of what's called a pulminary y embolism.

delia was there for this morning's emotional tribute. >> they called him the gentle giant. big rico webb, the 6'7", 365- pound, offensive lineman stood out as a power house on the field, but was kind and mild mannered in the hallways of the high school. today, his classmates remembered him and tears and in laughter. >> you never know when they are going to be gone. you know what i'm say saying? >> sophomore year, he got in a fight with james kirk. it wasn't a massive fight, but it was big enough it got a crowd around and it was pretty funny. so this was right before practice. the coach made him and james walk around for about 45 minutes. they walked around the entire field holding hands.

>> webb had a bright future ahead of him, just signing a full scholarship to play ball at alabama state. >> rico was going to be an extremely successful kid and that's one of the ways we can keep our brother hood in tact is be successful so we can tie everything back to where we all began. >> in hyattsville, delia goncalves, 9news now. >> funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. the man accused of stealing someone's nike foamposite shoes is now in custody. that suspect's name is lamont bennett. he was arrested thursday. and police say the robbery happened in the 5,000 block of silver court. bennett's arrest comes days after the demand for these $200 sneakers caused chaos outside stores all over the country, including right around here at the mall at prince georges. now bennett faces charges of first-degree assault, armed robbery, and theft.

former d.c. councilman is going to be sentenced in may for stealing thousands of dollars that was meant to go to youth and youth programs. bruce johnson has been working the story from the beginning and bruce, the nonprofit that was used to funnel these funds said thomas was the subject of a d.c. hearing today. >> they don't provide the services directly, but they get the money. it's called the children and youth investment trust fund. a lot of good, got a lot of big money, but what everybody is talking about is all the money that harry thomas junior stole. it's threatening the future of this program at this point. >> former d.c. councilman, harry thomas jr. could be sentenced to four years in prison for using his position to steal roughly $300,000 from the children's and youth investment trust fund. >> do you swear under penalty of law. >> today the administrators of the trust were summoned before a d.c. committee to explain why the nonprofit should be allowed to continue. >> is the program in trouble?

>> i don't think there's any risk of the substance of the program being discontinued. >> the trust is a public private partnership in the district that works to improve outcomes for children. >> ellen london, a long time staffer, now the ceo. the trust fund budget right now is $3 million. but since 1999, it's been over $100 million. much of that money put there through ear marks who had certain youth programs that they wanted funded over the years. trust witnesses will not comment on the continuing federal probe. testified the changes have been implemented to prevent the theft that saw the trust, write checks to two nonprofits who then kicked the money back to councilman, harry thomas jr. >> we have documented our process. the board does not review proposals. we have independent reviewers. >> we serve over 300 kids in our after school program. >> if the childrens and youth investment trust is allowed to

department chief recalls a moment he was seriously burned when fighting a house fire in northwest washington a year ago in april. four firefighters were injured, but ryan had the worst of it. undergoing several surgeries, including skin grafts and rehabilitation. >> he says the two firefighters recovering from friday's vacant house fire will be reminded of the day that could have taken their lives. they will also remember this. >> how important life and family is and how fast it can be taken away. >> firefighter was injured in friday's vacant house fire in riverdale heights. he was one of seven injured. burns on his face and torn ligaments in his shoulder. >> could have been sheet rock. could have been metal. too dark, too hot. >> with such dangerous and sometimes deadly conditions, injures don't stop them from their jobs. a job they are willing to risk their lives for. even if it means a long and tough road for recovery.

>> that's what i love. every time you go running into a burning building, doesn't mean you're going to come out. >> anny hong, 9news now. >> chief ryan ads family, friends, fellow fire fiergts firefighters will be a part of this recovery. caught on tape, an 86-year- old world war ii veteran crawls to safety after being attacked and carjacked. this happened last week at a busy gas station in detroit. the surveillance video shows the attacker driving aaron's car away while aaron crawls for help. amazingly, no one offers it to him. several people just walk by. he eventually makes it into the gas station and lays on the floor, still no one comes to his aide. but remarkably, aaron says he's not bitter. >> i was wondering why they was passing me if they saw me crawling. they knew something was wrong. but people don't want to get involved in anything nowadays.

awakening. aaa says our reason will be a hot spot for prices as we approach the spring and summer season. the auto club says the prices will be extremely high. partially because of the shutdown of refine rise on fineries on the east coast. as of this weekend, the average price was $3.83 a gallon in d.c. compared to $3.69 for the rest of the nation. all right d.c. residents, you are missing out on millions of dollars in unclaimed tax refunds. and the irs wants to put it back into your hands. 4,000 residents who did not file their 2008 tax returns could get back an average of $642 each. to collect that money, you must file that 2008 return with the government on tax day this year. that's april 17. under age drinking. it is not just dangerous, it is illegal. and coming up, 9 wants you to know just what happens when the cops roll up on local kids who have been boozing it up.

dwindling fertility who aren't ready to start a family have options now. including freezing eggs for the future. the american academy of pediatrics is changing its recommendations about one of the sexually transmitted viruses. boys should be vaccinated for hpv when they are 11 or 12. this is a series of 2 or 3 shots. the group previously just recommended the hpv vaccine for girls. now it's for boys, too. aap is issuing new guidelines for kids ready to hit the field for baseball and softball this spring. training and conditioning so they don't hurt their shoulders or elbows. >> they have -- >> as they are growing, if they over use their arms or shoulders too much, they wind up causing bone problems as well as muscle problems. there's a will the of information out there. that gives you the guidelines.

>> nfl combine is wrapping up in indianapolis and let's just say there's a bit of good news and bad news for the skins. >> if they are looking at quarterbacks, their job joust get tougher. kristen berset is here with a true nfl expert to break it all down for us. >> a big week for the potential draft picks joining me to talk about what went on at the combine. a writer from u.s.a. today. i know you just got off the plane from indianapolis. of course, yesterday lots of buzz around robert griffin iii. he ran the 40-yard dash, but do want to mention, he is a track star at baylor as well. we knew he was fast. you had a chance to chat with him. what was the buzz like surrounding him and how is he feeling about his week? >> a couple things. i think one of the things that was evident at the combine, this is a guy that you want to represent your franchise. so when you talk about a magnetic personality, he son of

a military kid, he is disciplined. he got a degree in three years at baylor. so when you look at those intangibles, add that to it, he has the potential to be a star. >> impressive nonetheless in the skills. howard philadelphia tweeted that the redskins are willing to give up their second round picks and first rounder for next year to move up and get rg3. a good decision on their part? >> that's the going rate. last year's draft when the atlanta falcons moved up from late in the first round to get julio jones, they gave up. the redskins sitting at number 6 could possibly try to make that move. and there are other teams that are going to be in the mix.

one being the cleveland browns at number 4. maybe the seattle sea hawks. it depends. if you're the st. louis rams, you're in a good spot because you can feel these offers. one thing that i have been told from someone who knows the particulars involved is that the redskins could have an inside track in dealing with the rams because bruce allen, the redskins general manager used to have a guy on his staff who was the point man for the st. louis rams. >> if they can't pull off that trade, who are other guys they might have been looking at? >> no question, texas a and m who did not work out. he has a food injury. nothing serious, but he is probably the next quarterback on everybody's list. so that's the guy to keep on eye on. and brandon is a quarterback from oklahoma state who was the oldest player at the combine. former baseball draft pick. he bounced around in the minor leagues, but he's in the draft at quarterback. that may be another option, but not at number 6 in the first

shape. it's an octagon. >> glenn elementary school has a diverse population. students from 52 different countries attend. today, they are visiting the art reach program in the mcclane, virginia. >> for many of these kids, they have not been exposed to art. they haven't been to an art gallery. they haven't been to a museum. this gives them the opportunity to see art directly, to be inspired by it and learn about the concepts of art. >> welcome. >> have you all been in an art gallery before? >> yes. >> some of you have, some of you haven't. that's great. we are so excited to have you here. >> sharon, a professional educator and artist says, art transcends all the differences and language, culture, and religion. and that is why art reach is so successful. >> many of the teachers are under pressure to teach,

specifically math concepts, english concepts, writing concepts, and art is a natural link to helping students think about those concepts in other ways. >> schools that participate in the art program have been designated as after school. most students speak english as a second language and come from low income families. anthony, a local artist, gets inspiration from young people. >> these kids are very wide eyed. their minds and imaginations are wide open. and because they are wide open, they are able to create things that are always a surprise for me. i really like teaching this age group and interacting with these kids. for me, i get good ideas. >> after school workshops, classroom projects, and visits to local art clubs. fairfax county teachers say the program is phenomenal and makes their job a lot easier. >> the other thing that is wonderful that teachers appreciate is that this gallery
