custody. this all unfolded this morning outside cleveland in a town called chardon. manuel with the latest for us tonight. >> parents cried and hugged their children outside chardon high school after a a student opened fire in the school cafeteria during breakfast. one student is dead and four injured. >> we feel so disheartened. >> a teacher may have saved lives by running after the suspect. >> one of the teachers happened to chase the shooting suspect out of the building. immediately at that point, our officers entered the building, went to the five injured students that were injured and got ems in there behind the door. >> police say there was one shooter and he turned himself in. students who witnessed the attack said there was chaos with people screaming and running down the halls. >> 1100 students are enrolled here at chardon high school. 30 miles outside of cleveland. parents describe it as a tight knit community where everybody

knows each other. >> as s.w.a.t. teams rush to the scene, teachers ushered the students out of the building and into the elementary school across the street. parents lined up outside to collect their kids. >> i hope every parent, if you haven't hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple days, take that time. >> victims are four boys and a girl. one witness recognized the shooter as an outcast. police have not identified the suspect. but they say they have his handgun and running a background check to trace where and when he got it. manuel, cbs news, chardon, ohio. >> now cbs is identifying the young man as t.j. lane. you see a photo of him right there. as of now, the fbi offered no comment on what a motive might be. back here at home, the district's office of the chief medical examiner says a

pulminary embolism killed a senior. the 6'7", 365-pound 17-year-old died saturday night. his teammates called him the gentle giant. and they remembered him in a prayer service today. >> you never know when they are going to be gone, you know what i'm saying? >> webb just received a scholarship to play for alabama state. his family has yet to announce any funeral arrangements. police are stepping up patrols around georgetown university after a student was sexually assaulted near campus. it happened early sunday morning at 36th and n streets northwest. i'm kristin fisher a block away from georgetown university where a student was beaten and sexually assaulted over the weekend. >> i live right here. i walk three to four times a day. >> students at georgetown university are rattled that something so violent could happen here on a street that is one of the main gateways to

campus. >> that makes me nervous if it happens right here. i live with four other girls and we are all about 20, 21. so we go to bars and come home. i walked home alone plenty of times. >> it happened around the time bars are closing. just after 2:00 a.m. sunday, a young man beat up and sexually assaulted a female student. the suspect got away, but described as being a white male between 18 and 22 years old. about 6 feet tall and with short brown hair. less than 24 hours after that sexual assault, two other georgetown university students were robbed at gunpoint just a few blocks away from here. police are still looking for those two suspects. so far, they do not believe that these two crimes are connected. in georgetown, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> virginia senate decided to put off a vote on requiring women to have an ultrasound before they can get an portion. would have mandated an invasive form of the exam and favor of

an external abdominal ultrasound. >> the lawmaker who wrote that bill is under fire tonight. delegate, dave albo on a new pack hit list to vote him out of office because of his support for several antiabortion bills. and as peggy fox reports, albo's sexually charged speech was the stimulous for the woman strike force pack. >> in a picture of a bill that has albo on it. >> dave albo's story about not having sex with his wife went viral over the weekend. >> the very next scene was a gentleman from alexandria going -- >> after they caught a clip about the transvaginal ultrasound bill, his wife was suddenly not in the mood. >> the show is over and she looks at me and she goes, i got to go to bed. >> both sides of the aisle found it funny, it pushed a group of women into action. >> i was angry about it.

fox, 9news now. >> and in just the first day, the women's strike force pack raised over $10,000. new at 6:00 tonight, the town of culpeper, virginia, could be facing a lawsuit over a deadly police shooting. but culpeper star opponent says gary cook plans to sue the town. this after a police officer shot and killed his wife, patricia, earlier this month. an officer responded to the report of a suspicious person in a parking lot. patricia cook drove off with an officer's arm in her window. the woman refused the order to stop. the officer has not been identified. two firefighters are in a local hospital in recovery. today, their fire chief is giving us insight after their own experiences on what they face ahead. >> the two firefighters are here at med star washington center. they could be here for weeks,

if not months recovering. their fire chief went through a similar experience where he was burned very badly. down to his muscle and bone. and he says what these men went through will change them for ever. >> it's going to be a long road of recovery. just takes time. >> river dale volunteer fire department recalls a moment he was seriously burned when fighting a house fire in northwest washington a year ago in april. he underwent several surgeries, including skin grafts and rehabilitation. >> something i love to do and you know, every time you go running in a burning building, doesn't mean you're going to come out. >> chief ryan says the two firefighters recovering from friday's fire will always be reminded of the day that could have taken their lives. but they'll need their strength and the support of family, friends, and fellow firefighters. >> you really deal with recovery for the rest of your life, because it's not going to go away. >> in northwest d.c. anny hong, 9news now. coming up at 7:00, a can dated

to auto workers who will be voting in the republican primary. terri bowman says he is part of a growing number of conservatives in the auto union. >> it's not the case where union members are primarily democrat. there's a loft diversification out there. >> bowman works on the production line at ford and took a big pay cut when the industry collapsed. he believes michigan needs more than just automobile jobs. >> we need to create that environment. i think mitt romney is the best candidate out there to create that environment, to create jobs in michigan. >> with the race so close, both romney and santorum are focused on getting their supporters to the polls tuesday. danielle nottingham, cbs news, detroit, michigan. >> virginia's lieutenant governor cast a tie breaking vote on a controversial voter id bill today. the measure tightens the requirements for providing identification at the polls. critics say it will only present new obstacles to the poor, elderly, disabled and others. the virginia senate also passed

a measure today that would exclude the press and public from observing the count of any provisional ballot. >> don't be penny wise, that was a key message president obama delivered to the nation's governor. today the president played host to the governors at an annual white house luncheon. he realizes state budgets are tight, but cutting back on education now will hurt the economy later. >> no issue will have a bigger impact on the future performance of our economy than education. in the long run, it's going to determine whether or not businesses stay here. it will determine whether businesses are created here, whether businesses are hiring here. >> president obama also said the nation's economic outlook is improving from the early days of his administration, saying our recovery is gaining speed. >> and the chance to go out for a little bit today during the show felt good. >> very nice. 64 was the high.

now, 9 sports with kristen berset. the best sports in town. >> with just 20 games left in the regular season, the capitals right now on the outside looking in. many expected them to make some moves before the trade deadline in hopes of securing another post season birth. but 3:00 p.m. came and went today with the caps staying put. mike's name was thrown around after a dismal season and rumors of discourse between hammerlick and dale hunter went nowhere. the capitals made no deals, sticking with the team currently in place. gm saying there wasn't anyone out there they wanted. >> i think our fan base, i think we have been doing this long enough that they ovens if -- we have terrific young players in our lineup right now. and we are going to have terrific young players going

forward because we didn't give them away today. >> one move the caps did make today, placing nicholas backstrom on long-term injured reserve. the caps center hasn't played since taking an elbow to the head. >> starting to look like harper will play on saturday. the 19-year-old didn't start any games last season. they want to give him the chance to at least compete for a spot with the club. >> can you believe it? conference tournaments that started the big dance not too far off right now. georgetown has clinched a first round bye in next month's big east tournament, but a win in tonight's home finale against 20th ranked notre dame could give them a double bye to the quarter finals. it's also senior night. the coach is making sure that they focus on what is most important right now. >> i don't want to stop and reflect on what jason and henry
