high with a 5:00 p.m. temperature still at 53 degrees. those winds will definitely relax after the noon hour. we are looking at clear skies here. there's a front coming through but there's no real weather associated with that except a cool qownl. 29 for -- cooldown. 29 for hagerstown. to the slight slightly mild -- to the south slightly milder. here in town 41. when you factor in the winds, this is why jackets and gloves and maybe the ear must haves if you're going to be -- ear must haves owe' earin -- you're going to be outside. it is 6:00 a.m. on the nose. that means time for monika's time saver traffic. i'm a little distracted watching ought the food being set up in the kitchen. here's a look from sky 9 at 66 exiting on to the beltway. traffic is moving well here. you have your usual slow spots.

santorum neck and neck. let's go to delia goncalves live in the satellite center with a preview. >> reporter: with a very strong showing in the polls, mitt romney is expected to take arizona and the 29 delegates there but the 30 delegates in michigan, they are still up in the air this morning. even if romney wins the whole state, that does not guarantee the native son will get all 30 delegates because they are divided per county. romney has tried to portray his rival as a poor choice to rebuild the economy. santorum on the other hand has launched a series of robo calls in michigan aimed at attracting democrats who are allowed to vote in the g.o.p. primary today. >> i don't believe in government telling us what to do. we need someone like that running against barack obama, not someone who did obama care light. >> senator santorum is a nice guy but he's never had a job in the private sector. he's worked as a lobbyist and

students are on edge after a violent weekend near their campus. someone beat and sexually assaulted a female student at 36 and n streets northwest early sunday morning. her attacker is still on the loose this morning and investigators say the victim is not being cooperative. some students say they don't feel safe. >> you just get the sense it's a very safe place to be but apparently it's not. two other georgetown students were robbed at gunpoint just a few blocks away and a few hours after the sexual assault. investigators do not believe the two crimes are connected. the suspect in a 2007 rape case will have a bond review hearing later today. police arrested bairn marshal yesterday. montgomery county police say d.n.a. taken from a rape scene at a hotel nearly five years ago links marshal to the crime. his d.n.a. profile was uploaded into a national database. a state delegate from prince george's county is saying those speed cameras are

only being used to raise money. delegate carolyn howard has introduced a bill in annapolis making it illegal to move those cameras around solely for the purpose of making more money. howard says she's heard other lawmakers make decisions to move cameras solely based on revenue. last month speed cameras in prince george's county issued nearly 27,000 tickets. when it comes to those speed camera tickets, it's probably going to cost you less than trying to fill up your gas tank. aaa says here in the d.c. metro area the average cost for a gallon of regular $3.73, up 7 cents in the last week. nationwide the average is up to $3.72 a gallon. we're still talking money at 6:05. jessica is here with a special your money report. >> since we're not saving you money on gasoline, let's save you money when you shop instead. >> department stores can feel pretty daunting. you have all those choices not to mention sticker shock. that's why we've pulled together five secrets from a

temperature of 53. we're going to take a beautiful look at inbound side of i-66 from sky 9 as you head into route 50. you're going to find delays extending into vienna and the beltway. all lanes are open. a bit of volume across 66 on route 50 another look around the area at 6:18. while republicans in michigan vote in the primary today, president obama welcomes detroit to washington. >> that's one of the stories making news at 6:12 this morning. the president is going to speak to the united auto workers conference here in d.c. and he will remind them the federal bailout which helped turn around and saved auto industry. the pentagon confirms a maryland national guard soldier was among those killed in afghanistan. 48-year-old major robert marshon -- robert marchanti was

killed. highwayed been with the maryland national guard since 1986. the italian cruise ship costa allegra should reach land by tomorrow. it lost its engine by fire while in the indian ocean. it's the sister ship of the costa concordia which ran aground last month. classes are canceled today at a suburban ohio school just a day after a deadly shooting. >> the teen police say pulled the trigger is due in court today. all of this happened in the town of chardon, ohio northeast of cleveland. greg black has more on the reaction to the shooting. >> everyone is thinking it's a normal monday. there's a guy with a gun. i mean, mondays don't get any worse than this. >> reporter: a small ohio town is trying to come to grips with the bloodshed that left one student dead and four others hospitalized. witnesses identify the suspect as t. t.j.

lane. they say without speaking a word, lane shot at a table of students in the chardon high school cafeteria. >> i looked straight ahead and i saw a gunpointing at a group of four guys sitting at a table and he was about 2 feet away from them and aiming right down at them. he wasn't shooting around the cafeteria at all. >> reporter: nate mueller said he was one of the students hit. he was grazed on the ear. >> the first shot made me look. his second shot i watched him take and hit somebody behind me. the third shot hit me as i was turning away. >> reporter: soon after the suspect was arrested. it was a teacher who chased him out of the school. >> i saw coach hall running towards him. then there was silence. there wasn't any shots fired. so i got up and ran as fast as i could outside to the soccer field across the street. >> reporter: prayer vigils were held last night for the victims

of the shooting. as for the suspect, an attorney for his family said they were devastated and asked for privacy as they try to understand how such a tragedy could have occurred and how they mourn this terrible loss for their community. i'm greg black for 9news now. lessons learned from the 2007 virginia tech shootings were used in response to this tragedy. the school used a phone alert system to inform parents about what happened. however, one of the other things learned, some false information was spread by the students inside the building as they were texting and posting to twitter and facebook during the tragedy. we turn now to howard. >> it's a brisk morning out there but another nice day for a run, a walk, a golf round. >> sounds good. >> tennis outside the bubble perhaps. maybe not so much this morning. it's a little brisk. had some winds gusting over 20 miles an hour but the winds will be lighter this afternoon as we climb into the 50s instead of the 60s like yesterday.

very pretty. 41 degrees. winds still out of the north, northwest at 13 miles an hour. a little tickle in my throat once again. cold air up north where we've got the 50s down to the south and 60s in new orleans. this sets the stage for a pretty good storm to develop. we're seeing it here in the northern plains with some hefty snows in the midwest and upper mississippi valley. rains off to the south and for us, rain tomorrow in the mid- atlantic. some of the rain tomorrow could be on the hefty side. snow will be pretty good up across new york state and new england as this system moves off towards the east. clear skies this morning, even though a front is coming through. we'll stay with a good deal of sunshine through the day. you notice a few clouds off to the west. tonight the clouds will increase after midnight and then tomorrow that's when the rain moves in. so the forecast today 55. 35 to 40 tonight. about 50 tomorrow with the periods of rain but thursday nice and mild. 64 degrees. friday still looks good and some rain on saturday.

drier, cooler sunday. and sunday night into monday morning maybe a few flurries. temperatures dipping into the 40s for highs. let's go to monika santami. how are the roads looking right now? you just have the normal slow stuff all around town. no big incidents to report. i'm starting off with the beltway here. you can see most of it is green around town. that means you're moving at the speed limit. if you're planning to head over to the north side of town, 270 you can see is slowing down just a bit here in gaithersburg. you're good to go through rockville and bethesda and down to the point where the lanes divide. a live look at the beltway. outer loop side normal as you leave 95 into silver spring. this is what it looks like. all lanes are open for you but below the speed limit through that stretch. we'll go back over to the beltway and the south side of town looking good through andrews air force base to oxon hill. no problems on route 5 out of brandywine. if you're planning to head here on new york avenue at bladensburg road in northeast that corridor is fine as well. coming up in my next report,

good day today. maybe not as warm as yesterday but this time of year when you have temperatures in the 50s, we'll take it. noontime temp 49 but the winds get lighter this afternoon as we approach 55. that's about 5 above average. nascar fans will be a little bleary eyed this morning. the diehards stayed up till 1:00 a.m. to catch the end of the daytona 500. >> this was a wild race. this was the first time it was at night the daytona 500. it was postponed twice because of rain sunday and again yesterday. they got it under way last night. lap 160, a bizarre scene. montoya had a problem with his car. he slides into the jet dryer that was there to dry the track after all the rain and then his car explodes. how bizarre. he was okay. no major issues there. the race would be delayed nearly two hours to catch up and clean up the mess. we go to 222 laps.

a crash on lap 196. finally around 12:55 this morning, matt kenseth gets the checkered flag. his second win. monday night was senior night for the jorntown hoyas -- georgetown hoyas and the two basketball players who will be leaving this spring made sure their night was a big one. george south hosted -- georgetown hosted notre dame. the hoyas win. they visit marquette this weekend. the capitals were neither buyers nor sellers at the nhl trading deadline monday but they did put center nicholas baxtrum on the long-term injured list. he hasn't played since january 3. the caps visit the islanders tonight. d.c. is one point behind winnipeg for a playoff spot with 20 games left to play. just about 6:25. just what the world needs.

the northbound side of 95. at route 123 it's going to be slow as you head for the occoquan river. we'll head into downtown along pennsylvania avenue at the williard hotel. there have been no problems across the potomac and anacostia river crossings and bridges. before i go, i do have a commuter alert. you want to avoid dupont circle later this morning if you k. here is a live look at the circle in northwest washington. so this morning at 10:00, ddot will shut off the traffic lights in the circle and they're going to stay off for a few hours. there will be police guiding you through the circle but if you can, just stay away from connecticut avenue, 19th street, p street, new hampshire avenue and mass avenue, you should. they're updating the system that runs all of these traffic lights. they want to get to a hundred intersections if they can and if we do have a major power outage, they want to make sure they stay o. they worked on

falls church metro station. opennous begins at 6:00. the forum starts at 7:00. new this morning video of a serial bank robber who's making a bizarre claim. prince george's county police released this surveillance video of the bank robber. they say he's hit at least four banks in the last two months and he's handing tellers a note saying he has a nuclear device and will detonate it if they don't give him money. police stress they don't believe the guy really has a nuclear weapon but they want to find him and end the robberies. in about 27 minutes, voters in the motor city in michigan go to the polls. that state is one of two hosting presidential primaries today. >> arizona is the other one but michigan is the one which promises to be a close race. >> delia goncalves is on the campaign beat this morning. she joins us live. save us, delia. >> reporter: that arizona is

expected to be a romney win hands down. he's leading by far in the polls this morning in arizona. so he's expected to take those 29 delegates in arizona. the 30 delegates in michigan still up in the air but a loss in michigan would be a huge blow to romney's campaign and also be a major embarrassment. the native son has struggled to gain widespread support in his home state. polls show he and rival rick santorum are in a neck to neck race there, even those candidates who have stayed away from michigan realized the stakes are extremely high for the former massachusetts governor but romney remains hopeful that in the end he is the best candidate for the job. >> this sure has been fun the last ten days or so. we started off about 15 points down in the polls. now we're leading in the polls. thanks, you guys. appreciate the support. >> i think governor romney has to carry michigan. i think he has an enormous

amount at stake. you can have all four -- >> reporter: that's newt gingrich speaking to folks in tennessee. he's looking ahead to super tuesday i should say spending his time campaigning in states there. tennessee is one of the ten states that will hold primaries next week and of course right here in our backyard of virginia as well holds primaries on super tuesday. at stake super tuesday next week, 419 delegates, more than all previous races combined. so far gingrich has 32 delegates. ron paul has 19 and let's finish up the breakdown. santorum so far has 72 delegates. romney 123. according to the associated press in order to get a win for the party nomination at the republican national convention, you need 1,144 delegates. so a long way to go. we could be looking at a long

race ahead. back to you. >> we'll be there every step of the way. thanks, delia, live in the satellite center this morning. the presidential primaries will of course be one of the top stories on cbs this morning. at the top of the hour they'll be talking with wisconsin congressman paul ryan to get this g.o.p.'s star on the vote as well as the federal budget. our country can be energy independent but will come at a price. >> you hear a lot of the candidates using the phrase "energy independence." sounds pretty good given $4 gas prices. but what would it take to control our own energy destiny? you might not like the sound of this completely. a study is out from the american petroleum institute finds if all federal land was open for drilling we could produce enough domestic oil by 2030to eliminate all exports. the study says the move would

create 1.4 million jobs and $800 billion in tax revenue. that sounds good, but here are the trade-offs. you would see drill rigs off of beaches up and down the east and west coasts and our national forests and alaska would be covered with roads. even with all that, the new oil may not bring down gas prices. there's a quiet renaissance going on for factory jobs. cnn reports you could make $100,000 a year working the lines. here's an example. an aspierg machinist can start training at 18 doing apprentice. in five years they would be making more than 50 grand and in ten years that could double to 100,000. a new soda is headed to the grocery store. you could see pepsi next on the shelves. it has about half the calories of regular pepsi at 60 calories a can. pepsi is hoping this is goax to appeal to the folk -- this is going to appeal to the folks who don't like diet soda but don't want all the calories of the full sugary drinks.
