that almost destroyed my healing process. >> they stopped dumping remains in 2008. air force officials say they are only now learning that 9/11 victims remains may have ended up in the landfill, too, along with the partial remains of some 274 service members. >> we certainly have expressed our regret for the additional grief caused to families of loved ones whose remains were handled in an less than ideal, or by some measures, inappropriate standard. >> some unidentified 9/11 remains were in a single case debt at arlington national cemetery. it is unclear why these remains were dumped instead. widower, abe scott, wants the pentagon to try and recover what it can from the landfill.

>> have a burial fitting for those who were killed on 9/11. >> but, at this point, the top civilian and military leaders of the air force say they have no plans to look back at what happened to those 9/11 remains. they say they are focused on the future and fixing the mortuary services at dover into the future. lesli. >> unfortunate development there, bruce, thank you. tonight, we are learning more about the teenage suspect in the deadly high school shooting in ohio. within the last hour, t.j. lane made his first appearance in juvenile court where the judge ordered he stay in police custody. the 17-year-old is accused of opening fire on a group of classmates in the cafeteria yesterday morning. two more victims died today. bringing the death toll to three. two others are still in the hospital. >> in court today, prosecutors say lane confessed to the attack. he also said he did not know his victims and chose them at random. >> he chose his victims at

random. this is not about bullying. this is not about drugs. this is someone who is not well and i'm sure in our court case, we'll prove that to all of your desires and make sure that justice is done here in this county. >> manuel is in chardon where the town is in mourning and investigators are trying to figure out why he could do such a thing. >> derek, suspected shooter, t.j. lane, entered the courthouse a short time ago wearing a bullet proof vest. inside for his initial hearing, prosecutors told the judge that lane admitted taking a gun and a knife to school and also admitted to the shootings, saying he chose his victims randomly. devastating news keeps battering the community of chardon, ohio, three students are now dead. victims of monday's shooting at the local high school. officials confirm the death of russell king and shortly after dmitrius.

an attorney for the suspect's family identifies him as t.j. lane. he was a student at a nearby school for at risk children. he was at chardon waiting for the bus when witnesses say he opened fire hitting five students. investigators searched his family's home for clues to a motive. cbs news has learned lane complained of being bullied. nate mueller was in the cafeteria when the gunfire started. he knew the suspect, but he never sensed trouble. >> he was a quiet kid. he never caused problems. he was never egged anybody on. >> a lot of the talk here in chardon is about how tight this community is. the sheriff himself has deep roots here and shaken up by the violence. >> i happen to be a graduate of chardon high school. i met my wife here. most erie feeling in the world was walking down the halls yesterday, running down them. >> across town, there are ribbons for the victims.

>> i can't imagine what the parents are going through. it's horrible. i mean, you never think it's going to happen in your town. >> the community will gather tonight for a candle light vigil. thursday, parents and students return together to chardon high. the judge is forbidding any video or pictures to be taken or shown of lane because he is a minor. and he will remain in custody. that's the latest from ohio. derek, back to you. >> thank you, manuel. those two wounded students are a 17-year-old male and a 18- year-old female who is in stable condition. earlier reports, as we know, had indicated that bullying could have played a role. but certainly this issue is once again in the spotlight as we look at the potential violence. peggy fox, you spoke to somebody who speaks out about bullying and what it can do to people. >> david is a college student who devotes much of his life to

bullying. gives talks to people who are bullied and also tries to help bullies change their ways. and one of the main things is talking to bullies to help them cope. >> when i was being bullied, i felt like everybody hated me. >> david is a confident student at northern virginia community college on his way to gw next year. but when he was in elementary school, he was bullied relentlessly by kids who used to be his friends. >> they would start making fun of me for various things. for my size, for religion, for being in the gifted education program. constantly degrading me. it's all of the things i was proud of. i have always been proud of my religion, you know, and it hurt to hear on a daily basis how my religion could be used against me. >> he left his bullies behind in his new middle school. the bullying had broken him down, leaving him emotionally unstable. >> at that point, my self- esteem was down. once i got into middle school. i was blaming myself for everything.

i couldn't make friends because i didn't want to trust anybody. >> he thought about lashing out. and can understand how a child who is bullied can result to violence as the alleged shooter did tragically. what saved david from hurting others or himself is the group he joined. the antidefamation league. there he learned how to cope with the bullying. he talks to area high schools about how to stop bullying. here's one suggestion. >> something as simple as sitting with somebody at lunch can completely turn their life around. >> david also says using the word gay in a derogatory way can be very hurtful to gay people. he said he was giving a talk at a high school once and a girl stood up and said i'm a bully. i never realized it and i am. i'm going to change my ways and thanked him. that meant a lot to him and a lot of times, bullies don't realize what they are saying, it's hurting people. >> and can be wounding. >> parents need to get

involved. >> peggy fox, thank you. let's go back to you guys. a county councilwoman being pulled over for driving more than 100 miles an hour. scott broom is live at police headquarters with the details. all right scotty, who is it and what is going on? >> all right, this is district 7 council member of prince georges county. according to a police source this afternoon. she was caught going 105 miles an hour in a 55 zone on the capital beltway back on february 22. right around branch avenue and believe it or not, at 50 miles an hour over the speed limit, she was issued only a warning, according to police. she was spotted by an officer in a marked patrol car on the beltway and pulled over in an official statement, police say she was written a ticket for an unsafe lane change and only a written warning for excessive speed. now reported to be 105 miles

per hour. police say the issuing is consistent with the typical discretion applied by police officers dealing with speeding motorists. now police say there is video of this incident that was taken by an in car camera by a police vehicle. they are not going to release that video because it's part of a pending district court traffic case. so we are working hard to learn more about that this afternoon. we have attempted a contact council member tolls, by e-mail and by telephone and so far, she hasn't talked about this alleged incident where police sources are now saying she was going 105 miles per hour on the beltway. we are continuing to work the story. reporting live at prince georges county police headquarters, scott broom, 9news now. >> scott, thanks. listen to this, a capital cyclist is run over by a flat bed truck, dragged for 30 feet, and does not die. this amazing se scenario

happened this morning in northwest d.c. and kristin fisher is live just a block away from that incident. kristen, this sounds like one lucky cyclist. >> no kidding, especially when you hear what he went through from witnesses. now, these red bikes have been taken on 1 1/2 million rides since the capital bike share program started in 2010. now out of that 1.5 million rides, there's only been 17 accidents. that's about one a month. unfortunately, one of those accidents took place this morning one block away. >> i was walking in this crosswalk across the street. >> lee was a few feet away when this cyclist was taken out by a flat bed truck. >> i have never seen anything like that in my life. >> the cyclist was dragged about 30 feet underneath the truck. >> some of the front wheels hit him and the back wheels hit him as well. so he was rolled over several

times. he was, you know, moving, but you could tell he was in horrific pain. >> accident is under investigation, but it appears both the cyclist and the truck were heading south on 11th street. when suddenly, the truck turned right into the cyclist. >> i was thinking about doing some biking myself. i'm not going to do it. definitely dangerous. >> try telling that to the people who use and need capital bike share every day to get to work. >> i'll probably pay better attention. i think i'll use it just as much. >> it is just part of what happens with a bike when you are riding a bike. today i ran out, but usually try and always have your helmet. >> this cyclist was not wearing a helmet. part of the appeal is the grab and go convenience. now they are trying to extend that to helmets. >> what we piloted so far is make helmets available in some of the hotels in town. so that the hotels can provide

them to the guests. so we may, hopefully expand that. >> now in this accident, unfortunately a helmet probably wouldn't have helped too much. the victims sustained most of the injuries that the victim sustained were to the lower part of his body. he is still in a hospital. no word on his condition. as for the driver, well, that driver could be facing some charges, once this investigation is complete. derek. >> kristen, i got to tell you, i can't tell you how many times i have come to that accident. that happens all the time. >> it's called that deadly right hook for a reason. >> thank you, kristen. on wall street, stocks closed above the 13,000 mark for the first time in nearly four years. the dow finished the day up 23 points to close at 13005. lesli. one highly anticipated list of top cars is out and i'm

a commuter alert for motorists on the virginia side of the beltway. work on the wilson bridge project will mean construction delays around alexandria. one lane of the outer loop will be shut down on the eisenhower connector tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 in the afternoon. and two lanes will be closed overnight on the same stretch of highway through thursday. all the traffic signals were turned off this morning down at dupont circle. they needed to upgrade the system. >> that led to predicted commuter chaos at one of

washington's busiest traffic circles. celix ortiz was there. >> reporter: too much congestion and the lights don't seem to be synchronized. >> people are honking and blowing and even running into the crosswalk. >> you have a green light to walk half way through the traffic and have to walk on a small island and go through the rest of the traffic. >> the lights are not working right now and it is not moving. i like it better when the lights work. >> people are still coming into work. how are we supposed to cross? are they going to block off the circle? >> i was not anticipating this right now. >> they have to do maintenance, right? definitely need someone to direct traffic if there's no lights. >> i think they are doing a good job.

correct. let's start with a live look outside, brought to you by michael and son. that black dot is to protect the lens. looking left from broadcast house and really, just a few high clouds coming in and they'll thicken up overnight. they'll stay dry tonight, if you want to take a walk this evening or later tonight. you will be fine. temperatures not bad. 54. dew point 22. pretty dry air mass. relative humidity only 29%. pressure is steady. 30.27 and winds northeasterly at 7. satellite picture, radar combined, here comes the storm. it's not terribly well organized, but by tomorrow, it will become much better organized. a big area of severe weather possible tomorrow. big thunderstorms pushing through the northern sections of missouri and some other thunderstorms down around alabama. but tomorrow, we could see severe weather close to us as richmond and as far north as pittsburgh. it's crazy. we could be talking about severe weather. satellite picture, radar combined. high clouds back to the west. again, we will stay dry tonight

and early tomorrow. temperatures in the 50s. 52 in bethesda. 55 in rockville. 52 in great falls. uniform, 52 in reston. and looking at 53 in sterling and 54 down in manassas and 54 downtown. 55 in college park. so, here's the deal. cooler and then wet. dry and just chilly tonight. you'll need an umbrella tomorrow all day. the ladder part of the view tomorrow could be wet. the earlier you come in, the better chance of having a dry commute. the evening will be wet for everybody. by tomorrow morning, early, we see some showers and good rain indicated by the yellow and orange out in western maryland. that rolls through in the afternoon. we are talking about the possibility of a rumble of thunder. you get a break, and lighter showers appear by evening. up toward gaithersburg and up around hagersburg and finally we get into early in the morning on thursday, showers

caught on tape, an upskirt photographer gets taken down. a seattle man spotted someone with a camera on his shoe taking pictures up his wife's skirt. with the help of bystanders you see right there, the video

peeping tom was apprehended and that was recorded on a smart phone. >> he had his foot underneath my skirt and he was clicking pictures. and using his cell phone to watch what he was doing. he had a mirror on his shoe with a camera lens. >> apparently he has too much time on his hands. he is identified as 41-year-old daniel crater. he was using sophisticated equipment, a including an hd camera, remote controls, and an iphone. a florida man now charged with destroying a 16-year-old girl's first car. he did it by driving a monster truck over it. >> this happened on saturday at the red neck yacht club. that is what it is called. police say norman deliberately drove over the toyota corolla several times while a crowd was cheering him on. the teenage driver was at a nearby mud pit with friends. somebody mentioned hey, a car is being flattened.

only on 9 tonight, there are a few moments sadder than the passing of one's mother. the sad reality along with a startling reaction from the officiating priest at the funeral. >> that's what one northwest washington woman said to her as she was trying it lay her mom to rest. matt jablow picks up the story. >> i was stunned. >> it's been an extremely difficult week for johnson, perhaps the most difficult week of her life. >> i feel very sad. >> it started on saturday at st. john newman catholic church in gaithersburg, where friends and family gathered to say good- bye to barbra's mother who died last week after a brief

illness. >> i was in the first pew in the first seat next to my mother's coffin. >> a few minutes before the funeral began, father marcel learned that barbra was involved in a romantic relationship with another woman. >> i am a lesbian. >> a former catholic schoolteacher, she aren't considered her sexual orientation would be a problem until she stepped forward to take communion. >> he said i can't give you communion because you live with a woman. >> although shaken, barbra said she tried to compose herself to give her mother the dignified funeral she deserved. a few minutes later, barbra began her eulogy. >> at which time father marcel left the alter and did not return until i finished my eulogy. >> according to barbra, the story gets worse. after first refusing to give barbra communion and walk off

the alter, the father refused to accompany barbra's mother's body to the cemetery here in aspen hill. pararay was told that father marcel had suddenly become ill. >> no other family should have suffer what we did from this man. >> in a written statement, the archdiocese of washington conceded that father marcel acted improperly. any issues to receive communion should be addressed by the priest with that person in a private setting. >> archdiocese of washington has said it exactly right. >> barbra johnson said she is satisfied with the statement, though she adds the damage done to her family and her mother's memory could never be repaired. >> we don't get a do over. this was her one moment to pass from this earth. >> matt jablow, 9news now. >> barbra said she told me father marcel will be removed. the archdiocese of washington

would only say the incident will be handled as a personnel one. the voters in michigan and arizona are headed to the polls today. even though michigan is mitt romney's home turf, the latest polls show he's in a tight race with his opponent. cbs news washington correspondent is here live from new york city. i want to talk scenario. let's say mitt romney wins, but santorum says i win, because this is romney's home turf. is he right? >> well, i'll tell you this. if mitt romney does not win michigan, i think it is going to turn this race upside down. you know, these races are not just about delegates. i mean, they are about momentum. they are about perception. they are about what people think. if mitt romney does not win in michigan, i think you're going to hear people in the party say wait a minute, here's the candidate that had all the money, here's the candidate that had the big organization and he couldn't win in his home

state where he grew up and where his dad was governor? i think it's just going to set off a round of doubt in the republican party and i think you will begin to hear people say, we need to get somebody else into this race. i'm not saying that in the end, mitt romney may or may not wind up with the nomination. i'm not saying this means that rick santorum is going to get it. it is going to turn things upside down if mitt romney doesn't win tonight. >> you know, bob, people keep talking about this third candidate or somebody else could get in the race, but chris cristie in new jersey says no way. who else is there? >> well, i mean, there is still chris cristie. i remain -- i'm not one who believed if push came to shove and republicans came to him and said look, you have a chance here, we need you, my guess is that in the end, he would do it. there are still others out

there. i mean, who knows. it's still a long shot at best. but i'm telling you if mitt romney doesn't win this one and he may have to win it decisively to put down this talk. if he doesn't, i think we are back to the get go on this. >> bob, that was my other question. does it matter how big the win is or is a win a win for mitt romney? >> well, a win is a lot better than losing if he wins by just a little bit, it's better than losing. what he really needs to do is get a good solid convincing win here tonight. and there's no question about it. the romney people are running scared. i mean, you and i have seen a lot of campaigns and we know how candidates like to lowball going into a campaign. the romney people today sounded really nervous about this. and started talking about all the alternatives and if they lose, it won't mean the end of the world and all that kind of thing. i think they are worried. he may pull it out at the end here, but this is going to be close going right down to the

pills made to help you get a good night sleep could be more dangerous than anyone thought. now researchers track the records of nearly 35,000 people, half of whom were taking sleep medications. the results out today in the british medical journal found people taking a newer one were almost five times more likely to die compared to those not taking the sleep aids. what is causing the death? are the pills to blame or underlying factors that suffer from insomnia? sleep expert talked about that on cbs this morning. >> i think there is an association that they saw with higher doses and you can certainly see that.

we have received a ground swell of national support for our reports on underage drinking. we've heard from educators and

paramedics and countless others across the nation. even in our community and beyond. as andrea mccarren tells us, our reports are getting the attention of local and national leaders, including elected officials who have the power to affect change. for several weeks, we watched and video taped dozens of teenagers buying alcohol at town square market in northwest washington. >> you can't be a parent and not be outraged and disgusted. >> i think it's reprehensible. >> that's just some of the growing chore us of reaction from our reports exposing the sale of liquor to minors. weeks after our initial report aired, the owner was arrested and charged. >> continue to sell to minors. >> this man is stealingly cor out of his liquor store to children. >> the buyers, children as

outside. this is our live weather cam. you can see the sun there on the right. we'll put this into motion the past couple of hours and we'll see high clouds move in. for the most part, we're in good shape tonight. in fact, we start out clear and the clouds will roll in here and we'll see a dry night and a dry early morning it looks like and then we'll see perhaps some rain developing mid to late morning across the metro area. right now, high clouds, not a big deal. temperature wise, we're in the 50s downtown. we're looking at 54 at national. dew point is 22. the winds north, northeast. there are the clouds rolling in, but again, stays dry tonight and early tomorrow. temperatures are in the 50s, pretty much across the board. 51 in bethesda. 52 in reston. we're looking at 52 at andrews and 55 over by beltsville and with the wind off the water,

notice the computer is picking up the colder air. the water is still cold. the bay and the ocean both are cold. cooler and wet and dry. just chilly tonight. need an umbrella for tomorrow. the morning commute will be wet late. tail end of the morning commute and it appears the evening commute will be wet for about everybody. all right, tonight 2:00 in the morning, you can do whatever you want to do, no problems. by 8:45, most of the showers are west of town. that's what i mean by the tail end of the rush hour becoming wet. pretty good rains indicated by yellows. and down i-81. then that rolls across the heart of the metro area in the afternoon. some big time thunderstorms are possible. maybe even some localized street flooding. we get into the 8:30 hour tomorrow evening. some left over showers. another batch of showers roll in. by thursday morning, all the showers beginning to lift on out. so for tonight, clear early and clouds come in lite.
