arlington national cemetery. the small, unidentified remains of those who died in pentagon and shanksville in 2011 may have been dumped in landfill. how this could have been happening and what's going to happen now. >> it's really like a scar picked open for some 9/11 families. the news that some small, apparently unidentifyable, unattestable remains may have ended up dumped in a landfill was buried, actually, in this 86 page report from an independent panel. it has left some families angry and disappointed. >> totally unbelievable. >> abe scott lost his wife, janice, at the pentagon on 9/11. he says news that some small unidentified for the of her may have ended up in landfill is a terrible setback.

>> i have lost all confidence in our system right now. >> we don't know which landfill, but the pentagon was forced to admit in november that partial remains of 274 troops had ended up in the huge dump in king george, virginia. whistle blowers had gone to a delaware senator complaining about the mortuary at dover air force base. >> working at dover is like you get a train wreck every single day. >> some of sergeant scott smith's remains were among those dumped at king george. >> no human being should be placed in a landfill, no matter it's a fingernail, a foot, or an entire body. >> air force officials insist they are now learning that 9/11 victims remains may have ended up in the dump. >> prior practices were not appropriate. >> some unidentified 9/11 remains were entered in a single casket at arlington national cemetery. it is unclear why these remains

were dumped instead. scott wants the pentagon to try and recover what it can from the landfill. >> have a burial fitting for those who were killed on 9/11. >> but air force officials at this point do not seem very interested in looking back at what happened and how those remains ended up in a dump. starting in 2008, they began burying these remains at sea. and the air force secretary and the air force chief of staff say they are focused on fixing the mortuary at delaware now for the future. >> for those misplaced remains, the people left behind are waiting for an apology. >> that's what it seems like. really surprising, this whole thing seemed to come to a surprise to the air force secretary because it was way down in that report. >> thank you for that. back to you in the studio. campaign 2012 is making stops in maryland, or i should say, in michigan and arizona

today. tonight, the tracking poll shows 55% of likely voters believe mitt romney will eventually be the nominee. that does not mean rick santorum is ready to give us his fight. >> mitt romney posed for pictures and kept up his attack on rick santorum. he says his chief rival does not have the skills to be president. >> he's an economic lightweight. i don't think he understands the process of job creating. >> santorum was also out early, hitting some breakfast spots and making a last minute pitch for votes. >> best of luck. >> thank you very much. >> voters are casting ballots in arizona today. >> this is rick santorum, how are you? >> it's michigan where the former pennsylvania senator and romney are locked in a tight race. it's romney's home turf and a santorum upset would be a huge blow to the romney campaign. santorum is trying to get a

boost from democrats here in michigan. he is encouraging them to come out to polling places temporarily change their party affiliation and vote for him. >> romney calls that a new low for the campaign. he says democrats should not be choosing the republican nominee, but not all voters agree. >> as long as he's not doing it with a gun to their head, i don't see anything wrong with that. >> some republicans are having a tough time making up their mind. >> i'm trying to do my own research on both candidates. as much information on their work ethic and their stance. >> as for ron paul and newt gingrich, neither did much campaigning in today's primary state. the former house speaker is in georgia as he looks for a strong showing next week on super tuesday. 59 delegates are up for grabs tonight. 29 in arizona, 30 here in michigan, and arizona is winner

>> yes. turning now to the latest in that school shooting in ohio. this afternoon, a judge ordered the 17-year-old suspect held at least for the next 15 days. this afternoon as we say, the prosecutor say t.j. lane admitted firing ten shots at chardon high school yesterday morning. all of them at random. two of the people he shot died today. that brings the total number of deaths to three. now another student was released from the hospital and is back home with his family. students will head back to school in chardon on friday. michael from our sister station, wgrz in chardon tonight, he has a preview of the memorials planned for the three students who lost their lives. >> good evening, anita. driving through chardon, there are red and black ribbons everywhere and already people are here ready to go inside the church behind us, st. mary's parrish, where they will have a 7:00 p.m. vigil to remember those they lost and begin the very long

process of healing here. in the small town of chardon, ohio. >> we have a community asking, are you okay? >> questions with no easy answers. as the shock subsides, people turn to faith and each other. last night's vigil to be followed by a larger service tonight at 7:00 at this church across the street from where the massacre happened. >> healing from the heartbreak of five students shot, three who have since died from their injuries, and countless others traumatized by what happened when police say t.j. lane entered the school with a gun. but why? >> at this time, i cannot provide you a motive. >> we are learning more about the suspect. most describe him as quiet, reserved, and dark. both in the years before and the moments during the rampage. >> he had no emotion on his face. he was just shooting. >> but he was a good kid, struggling through bad times. >> the bullying and people

caught on tape, an 11-year- old girl has a brutal encounter with a deer. she was leaving a convenience store just as the animal came crashing through the same door. glass went everywhere and samantha took a direct hit. she suffered a concussion, cuts on her leg. but she's expected to be okay. the deer was badly injured and had to be put down.

a picture of a u.s. marine kissing his boyfriend has gone viral on the internet. the picture shows 25-year-old brandon morgan jumping into the arms of his boyfriend. it took place last wednesday during a military homecoming celebration at a marine corps base in hawaii. a friend snapped the picture. they posted it on facebook where it has drawn thousands of comments. >> apparently this photo has been dubbed the kiss seen heard around the world that is breaking barriers. people feel more confident do be truthful for who they know they are. >> military has standards of conduct when it comes to public displays. the couples say they respect those standards, but they say this was a homecoming event and they were celebrating like everyone else. >> still ahead tonight, he's been called the mayor for life. tonight, some challengers are taking aim at marion barry's seat on the d.c. city council.

fill. the nascar season got off to a blazing start last night. after being delayed today, it was because of this fiery wreck. look at that. 40 laps to go, juan pablo raced out. there's his car. he loses control, trying to catch up with the pack. instead, hits a truck that was carrying 200 gallons of jet fuel. fuel and fumes. look at that fire. i mean, that is just a blazing, incredible sight. the race began again, matt edged out dale earnhardt jr. so we want to know what the drivers did during that two- hour delay. here's earnhardt, they are tweeting. they all congregated around. he tweeted these pictures from his car. a few of the cars parked on there. so, i guess you get bored after two hours. >> that's it for us. the cbs evening news is next. >> and derek is back at 7:00.
