waste. the ashes dumped in a landfill. >> that is totally unacceptable. >> abe scott lost his wife, janice, at the pentagon. news that some small part of her may have ended up in a landfill adds to his lingering pain. >> it's been a terrible reset. that almost destroying my healing process. >> they stopped dumping remaining in 2008. air force officials say they are only now learning that 9/11 victims remains may have ended up in the landfill, too, along with the partial remains of some 274 service members. >> we certainly have expressed our regret for additional grief caused to families of loved ones whose remains were handled in a less than ideal, by some measures, inappropriate standard.

that they can use to give a head's up to the family members. and number two, i'm very disappointed with the process that has been done by the government so far in terms of bringing the accountability to those who were in management positions at 9/11 and post 9/11 issues. i think the pentagon owes us some answers. they need -- and answer, provide answers to the questions we have. i also think they need to do an investigation that is not directly done by the osd inspector general. it should be done by an entity, for example, the general accounting office. and we need to -- we need to bring about accountability to

those who were in charge at that mortuary. >> what the government seems to be saying to you is, we're sorry this happened, but we are moving on. is there anything else they could say that would make this better for you? >> none. except that they are going to bring those who were in charge of that mortuary and make them accountable of what happened. >> one quick question. you said that this pulled a scab, basically audiotape your healing process. what do you do now to restart that healing? >> well, i'm a christian man and what i'm going to do is continue on doing the fine things with my wife's scholarship and i'm willing to work with the pentagon in terms of answering the question that we have and bring this to a closure. >> abe scott, thank you so much for talking with us and we hope you find peace over this. thank you. >> thank you. all right, now we move on to big developments in

yesterday's deadly scoot shooting in ohio. the 17-year-old suspect was in court and the judge ordered that t.j. lane be held for the next 15 days while authorities wrangle over the charges and whether or not to try him as an adult. lane had admitted he fired ten shots inside the chardon high school. >> earlier in court today, he chose his victims at random. this is not about bullying. this is not about drugs. this is someone who is not well and i'm sure in our court case, we'll prove that to all of your desires and will make sure that justice is done here in this county. g one of those shooting victims died yesterday, two others passed away today. memorials are being planned. classmates will be back in school on friday. >> a cyclist gets run over today by a flat bed truck, but lives to tell about it. this happened this morning at the intersection of u street

and 11th street in northwest d.c. >> i'm kristin fisher in northwest washington. i'm at the scene of an ugly collision between a lumber truck and a capital bike. >> i was walking in this crosswalk right across the street. >> lee was just a few feet away. this cyclist was taken out by a flat bed truck. >> i have never seen anything like that in my life. >> not only was he hit, the cyclist was dragged 30 feet underneath the truck. >> some of the front wheels hit him. you can tell he was in horrific pain. >> the accident is still under investigation. but it appears that both the cyclist and the truck were heading south on 11th street when suddenly, the truck turned right into the cyclist. >> this cyclist was not wearing a helmet. part of the appeal of capital bike share is the grab and go convenience. now they are trying to extend that to helmets. >> what we piloted so far is make helmets available in some of the hotels in town so that

the hotels can provide them to the guests. so, we may hopefully expand that. >> in washington, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> in less than one hour, the polls will close and the michigan republican primary and it's shaping up as a tight race. where 30 delegates are up for grabs. mitt romney and rick santorum in a tie until the two focus their efforts in michigan on convincing voters that their opponent is the wrong choice. >> i understand why jobs go. why they come. santorum is a nice guy, but he's never had a job in the private sector. i believe in markets. i believe in free people. i don't believe in government telling us what to do. we need someone like that running against barack obama. not someone who did obama care. >> the voters are choosing a candidate in a winner take all primary in arizona. the winner there gets 29 delegates, but most candidates skipped the state as romney appears to have a solid lead

there. the other two candidates, ron paul and newt gingrich are skipping california and michigan and focusing on the states that are part of the big super tuesday vote next week. gingrich spent today campaigning in georgia. he is hoping to reenergize his campaign. ron paul is holding rally tonight in springfield, virginia. the only candidates on next week's ballot in the commonwealth. occupy protesters will be sticking around at freedom plaza for a little while longer. the national park service is finalizing an extension to their permit, which as of now, expires tomorrow. the extension would allow the protesters to remain in freedom plaza until april 29. the pr tests started back in october on the 10th on versely of the start of the war in afghanistan. the dulles access road 267. starting at 9:30 tonight, vdot will close all of the eastbound lanes where it intersects the

inner loop. the traffic will be detoured and then on to chain bridge road. crews will be working on the beltway express lanes project. the lanes will be reopening at 5:30 in the morning. >> another great looking day outside, just like most of the rest of this past month. topper, wouldn't it be great if every february was like this one? >> no. it would be great for some. we're looking at a nice evening. clouds are rolling in, but no worries. let me show you temperatures. a little bit cooler in the suburbs. 48, 45 now to frederick and 46 in leesburg. still 51 downtown and 54 in manassas. really not a bad evening as we close out the month of february. or almost close it out. clear skies early and clouds come in late. breezy and chilly. winds will pick up later. south, southeast at 10 to 15. we'll come back, derek, and talk about thunderstorms and tell you when those are going to roll in and we have some snow flakes on the seven-day. we'll explain that as well.

again. that makes for 21 straight days that the cost has increased. the national average is now at $3.72. that's 2 cents more than yesterday. 35 cents more than this time last year. here in washington, d.c. area, prices are up a penny from yesterday to $3.73 a gallon. >> a large group of protesters taking aim at pepco. they showed up at a bethesda office building to deliver a message and cake to a board member. they can't have its cake and eat it, too. the protesters are calling on the utility to withdraw its request for a rate hike and cut salaries of workers. >> they are not happy. the group said pepco board members can expect these the next several days. >> from sunny and warm to chilly and rainy.

well, the cat is out of the bag. we now know who is behind the hank the cat campaign for the u.s. senate seat in virginia. hank's owner is anthony roberts.

he and his partner set up the whole thing as an inside joke, but the campaign's website crashed when it got too popular and hank's first ad went viral. hank has his work cut out for him. a new poll shows a growing lead for republican candidate and former governor, george allen. it was conducted by rhone oak roanoak college. allen and kaine face multiple challenges in the june primary. >> two years ago, baltimore's mayor enacted a 2-cent bottle tax and now she wants to more than double it. stephanie rawlings-blake introduced a tax. she says that would bring in $10 million a year and that would be great for fixing up schools. but opponents say it would hurt families and cause retailers to cut jobs. city council is expected to vet on the vote on the bill in the

february 29 get an opportunity to actually celebrate their birthday. but, why do we add that extra die day to the calendar? >> every four years, these guys get an extra day of spring batting practice. and these guys get an extra day on the campaign trail. why do we really need february 29 on the calendar this year? the answer is partly in our manmade calendar and partly in the way the earth moves. >> it goes around the sun once in 365 and almost a quarter days. almost, but not quite. so in order to rectify this, we have to periodically add an extra day to the calendar. >> u.s. naval observatory, the date and time. he says the leap year dates back to julius cesar. the idea was to keep the summer and winter solstice's close to

in the meantime, locate your umbrella tonight. let's have a live look outside. this is the intersection of wisconsin. traffic is moving along nicely. look to the left, that is north along wisconsin avenue. temperatures still pretty mild. i mean, they are falling into the 40s in the suburbs. but 51 downtown. wind out of the south at 6. dew point 22. that's troubling. and relative humidity only 32%. pressure, 30.37. that's been sitting there since 5:00 this evening. temperatures again in the suburbs in the 40s. 49 in arlington. still 50 in rockville. already 46 in gaithersburg. 49 in great falls. 54 in manassas. that seems high. 48 in college park and 49 in beltsville. so cooler than wet. dry and chilly. you'll need your umbrella tomorrow. morning commute will probably be late. the tail end of it. evening commute looks wet pretty much across the board just about everywhere.

here's our future cast. clouds coming in, notice the green blob. then we'll stop at 10:30. so get to work early. if you get to work by 9:00, you'll have a dry commute. after that, all bets are off. look at the yellows, that's heavy rain. from hagerstown, down into fairfax county and also down into charles county and prince georges county. heavy activity rolls through. then we get a break by tomorrow evening. another batch rolls through tomorrow night. that could be heavier. see the oranges and the yellows, even red. we have two chances for thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and again tomorrow night and then we get a break. everything pushes away and left with a very nice thursday. so for tonight, clear early. then clouds come in late. breezy and we'll call it chilly. winds south, southeast 10 to 15. by morning, get ready, rain and showers developing. 9:00 or 10:00. earlier to the west.

a little later to the east. temperatures in the 30s and 40s. winds south, southeast at 10 to 15 and by afternoon, rain showers and even some thunderstorms. high temperatures around 60. winds turn a little bit more out of the southwest at about 10 to 15. so we'll break it down for you. dry at 6:00. 35 to 42. but then storms possible at noon. storms possible at 5:00. 46 to 50 at noon and 49 to about 54 by evening. all right, next seven days. once we get through tomorrow, we're in great shape. look at thursday, coming in like a lam. sunshine and 69. are you kidding me? the bulk of the day is dry. still fairly mild. rain showers and maybe more thunderstorms, derek, on saturday. 55 and then colder. maybe some snow showers sunday night. maybe a flurry on monday, too. >> all right, sir. winter still left in the tank. >> barely. >> just a little. we'll be back.

in the mail bag tonight, a bit of a debate raging on the facebook page about that story involving a catholic priest and refusing to give that woman communion or participate in the ceremony after finding out she is a lesbian. monica harrison writes, that is so sad. i feel so horrible for that woman. i don't care what you think, it's a funeral. the woman's mother died. we get so mad about that lunatic group that protests funerals and this is no different. i think it's worse. but wait just a second, that priest has to follow certain rules. for him, sharing it with a lifestyle that is unbiblical is unappropriate and he would have to answer to god inappropriately. since he found out during the funeral, there was no time for any private council. the rest of the funeral should not have been a problem, which is pretty much what the catholic church is telling us. being plain rude is something else. meantime, we got this on
