disaster i've ever seen and i'm just astounded by the amount of destruction. >> the death toll continues the climb in tonight stands at 38 people killed by tornadoes and storms across five states, hello, i'm bruce johnson and thank you for joining us. a massive search tonight for the survivors of the storms and tornadoes in the midwest and south and in the gulf coast can the great lakes -- and the great lakes, emergency responders are combing through homed in neighborhoods. president barack obama he's promised federal assistance where needed. along with the 38 people are hundreds of people with injuries tonight and in one remarkable story a 2-year-old girl was found alive in a field ten miles from her home. susan mcginnis begins the coverage tonight from henryville, indiana. >> reporter: first responders combed through the rubble searching for tornado survivors. >> we just hope that we've not left any stone unturned at this point. >> reporter: the crew in henryville, indiana picked up a photo album they hope to get to

it owner. >> after the fact they'll say that's the only picture we found of the family we have left. >> reporter: the tornado demolished the townsending a school bus into a building, dropping a tractor-trailer on a gas station and shearing the walls off of homes. >> i've seen some of the most incredible and intense damage i've ever seener. >> it headed into eastern kentucky cutting a path of destruction 52 miles long. >> reporter: the national weather service is saying it's an f 4. >> it's in the violent category that most tornadoes never come anywhere near to. >> reporter: one young survivor is recovering in louisville. rescuers found the 2-year-old in a field near her home. in ohio a twister tore up the town of moscow killing two people and a few people died in

alabama. back in henryville, long time resident wayne jones is trying to stay positive. >> i have insurance that covers everything, just pay everything off and start over. >> reporter: jones will have to start by finding a new place to live, susan mcginnis, cbs news, henryville, indiana. >> tonight emergency cows are afraid the death tom is going to rise -- toll is going to rise. small kentucky town in morgan county lab demolished in the storm. tonight residents are going through what's left of their homes and possessions through the area. in homessen -- many homes have been destroyed. >> can't get in to put a roof on. probably all the gone by the time -- be gone by the time we get back in. >> i guess we'll have to start all over and just it's awful. >> we feel lucky and blessed. >> and tonight emergency crews still searching through buildings and debris hoping to find survives. right now anny hong is in the weather center and anny, a record number of twisters last

night? >> well, bruce, it's actually a possibility. especially for the ohio and tennessee valleys. for the month of march, now the standing record is at 74 tornadoes. that was in march 11th through 13th back in 2006. now, right now more than 100 reports of tornadoes have come in from yesterday. up to -- and about a dozen states from mississippi to ohio. but now you have to keep in mind, these tornado reports may go down. as they'll be consolidated as the damage surveys are done. things are much quieter in the midwest, a lot of the tornadoes took place. here's a look at doppler radar where we have a dip in the jet stream. as the cloneup continues toy -- clean-up continues they shouldn't be encountering severe weather over the next couple of days, for us cooler weather as well. bruce back to you.

>> anny, thanks a lot. rush limbaugh is apologizing tonight to a georgetown university law student for his remarks that set off the bipartisan storm of anger and sent some of his radio advertisers walking. ken molestina live with more. >> reporter: yeah, bruce earlier this week that limbaugh took aim at georgetown law student sandra fluke and now he's apologizing for the comments but not everyone is buying it. >> he thinks you're a slut right? thinks you're a prostitute. she wants to be paid to have sex. >> reporter: those were the words broadcast by rush limbaugh in week after georgetown law student sandra fluke testified. >> the denial of contraceptive coverage impact real people. >> reporter: now after reports of advertisers pulling out of the show he's offering an apology. in a statement limbaugh wrote quote --

caucuses. he defeated rick perry and ron paul who were battling for second place tonight. newt gingrich, he trailed further behind. 40 delegates are at stake. now on tuesday, that's the big prize. more than 400 delegates up for grabs and voting takes place in some seven -- make that ten states. d.c. businessman jeffrey thompson raise big money for most of the district's recent mayors and council members. last night the fbi and irs raided thompson's home in northwest washington. people close to him believe he's under investigation because prosecutors want to know if all the dollars steered to local campaigns were legal. aftercommando troublearmando trull got reaction today. >> reporter: according to published reports, thompson, his many companies, employees, associates and contractors have contributed over $730,000 in the last ten years alone.

orange, $100,000, mayor gray, $90,000. council chair kwame brown, $33,000. just about every sitting member of the council except for tommy wells has gotten a thompson connected check. has mr. thompson or any of the companies contributed to your campaign in any way? >> he did a long time ago. not recently. >> i think he's been involved in political campaigns for longer than i've been a politician. >> reporter: the district has been very good to jeffrey thompson. the biggest contract is the $320 million a year deal to provide medicare managed care. that company had to pay the district $12 million after the city sued it for fraud. the company admitted no wrongdoing and the settlement and the contract was renewed. last night, the fbi and irs raided thompson's northwest home in his d.c. offices. the fed say it's part of the ongoing investigation and mo

the cruiser to stop the car and the officer had pulled over and that car struck the officer. 45-year-old driver who caused all of this has been charged with driving under the influence. a small plane crash in rappahannock county leaves two people hurt. the plane from south carolina en route to hagerstown, maryland went down in a field this afternoon. three people on board were hurt. there were three people on board, two of them were hurt and we don't know the extent of their injuries. the faa of course is investigating why the plane went down. the suspect is on the loose after robbing a pharmacy in sterling, virginia and tonight authorities want your help in catching him. take a look at the store video. a man walked into the rite aid pharmacy in the cedar lake placid shopping center just before 10:00 this morning. he approaches the pharmacy counter, implied he had and weapon and demanded drugs. he made off with prescription medication. anyone with information should call loudoun county sheriff's office, still ahead on nudes news this saturday night.

actress cheryl lee roth is in washington this weekend to promote awareness of hiv and aids. ralph visited the d.c. women's collective in -- women's collective in northeast washington to urge workers to cricket the an aids -- contribute to an aids memorial quilt. the quell features more than 47,000 panels. each one dedicated to somebody who died of aids. ralph's african-americans in particular that participate in mo josh beckett -- in the project. >> it's the aids quilt. and we realize that the aids quilt is over 50 miles long and

treated at children's hospital until a match is found. disneyland was put on lockdown. thousands of people were left milling about disney's main streets and tens of thousands more were left stuck outside the anaheim, california resort. disneyland was shut down for about three hours when the suspicious package turned out to be harmless. the district of columbia's 911 emergency system is up and running again tonight. the system went down for about 20 minutes this afternoon without warning. police say there was no major emergencies during that time and tonight, they're blaming is pepco feeder problem which knocked out power to the emergency call center. coming up on 9news now this saturday night, not too early to start thinking about st. patrick's day. head over to old town to get help you started. also the great weather- wise. and anny is going to tell you how the plan for love for skating.

st. patrick's day parade. hundreds of people lined up along king streets to see the parade. the owners of murphy's grand irish pub in old town, they served as grand marshals today. today's festivities also included a classic car show and a fun dog show. great day for a parade especially in the afternoon. i thought it was great out there. >> yeah, definitely we saw some really early morning rain but the rain went away. the clouds went away bruce and we got up to 63 in down on the a pretty nice day this afternoon -- downtown, a pretty nice day this afternoon. hey tomorrow things are changing. colder air filtering in right now and temperatures are cooling down in downtown. we are at 52 degrees. cloudy skies. the winds are out of the north- northwest at 15 miles per hour. right now in manassas down into the 40s already. leesburg 45. but fredericksburg you're holding on the to 56 degrees, that's our mild spot for the hour. 53 in annapolis.

and in hagerstown, down to the lower 40s. so you will notice tomorrow morning as you're waking up heading out the door, it will be colder especially compared to this morning's mild start. here's a look at this area of low pressure a lot of showers and thunderstorms going throw into parts of georgia, the carolinas. so looks like we are looking at cloudy conditions a slight chance to the southeast of us tomorrow where we could see maybe some wet weather but for the most part, it will be a colder start for your sunday morning. the afternoon breezy and cooler. then for monday morning, some snow showers are possible. not a big snow maker though. the middle of the week is looking to be milder and dry for your wednesday and thursday. we'll take a look at that in your seven day forecast. here's a look at the 9 futurecast. so tonight, cloudy conditions. it will be cloudy through overnight and into tomorrow morning to start your sunday morning. and then by the afternoon, we'll see a little bit of clearing. and then we'll see the clouds increase once again tomorrow night into early monday morning. that's when we have a chance for some snow showers.

you can see in the white and the purple here right around fredericksburg and points south. even just south of pax river in southern maryland. you can see some snow showers, maybe some flurries, not a whole lot expected as far as accumulations are concerned. around the beltway. but by the afternoon the clouds break out and we see more sunshine but we will be cooler on monday. so overnight, as you're sleeping mostly cloudy and colder. a one to two blanket night. lows will be 35 to 40 degrees. tomorrow morning as you're starting off the day, mostly cloudy and cold. grab your jacket. northwest winds at around 10 to 15 miles per hour. a breezy afternoon. partial clearing but colder. our sunset's five minutes after 6:00 p.m. so here's a look at your zone forecast. we start in western maryland and cumberland, highs there topping out lower 40s and mostly cloudy conditions. snow showers basically out in the mountains. hagerstown mid 40s.
