you're watching 9news now at 5:00 a.m. i'm jessica doyle in for andrea roane. >> andrea will be back tomorrow. i'm mike hydeck. glad you're with us. you can expect? flakes out there. monika is going to have traffic in a moment. howard bernstein has your weather first. we have a clipper system coming across the region. clippers move fast. they don't have a lot of moisture to work with and it is march after all. road surfaces warm so we're not expecting much in the way of problems, just conversational snow. but there will be some areas well south of d.c. towards culpeper, charlottesville that do get minor buildup on the grassy surfaces. that's something we'll watch but this is going to be a memory quickly as a warming trend is on the way after today. here's a look at our day planner. we're already in the 20s and low 30s. only 40 by noon. the permeds of flurries and -- periods of flurries and light snow especially south of d.c. the high for today around 44 degrees. we have partly cloudy skies and 32. the clipper system we're

watching is coming across southern west virginia now, just into southwestern virginia. see this right here? this is going to swing to our south. the air around here is a little bit of dry. even though the radars may have snow on top of us, i think a lot of it is going to be evaporating. it's cold enough to support winter weather with 25 in manassas. upper 20s, low 30s on the bay. even in southern maryland we're down to 28 at the patuxent river naval air station. orange, fredricksburg, southern st. mary's and calvert, you may see a little bit of buildup on the grassy surfaces if the snow comes down quickly enough. but with high temperatures again well above freezing expecting nothing but wet road surfaces. let's talk about road surfaces this morning and find out what's going on. here's monika with more. good morning, everybody. it's 5:01 monday morning. usually things get going pretty early on mondays. right now you have a little bit of increase in volume but no

big deals to report. on 270 from gaithersburg down to bethesda you're going to be okay. let's take a live look if you're planning to head to 270 in clarksburg coming down from frederick. lanes are open. no problems to report. 355 looks much the same. no problems on the great seneca highway as well. let's go back over to the maps this time to southern maryland. we're looking fine at 5, 405, brandywine. we'll take a look at the beltway right near andrews air force base and as you head over to the southeast, southwest freeway. a live look on our traffic camera. fine into the southeast area. all the corridors in the district look great. no problems over the potomac and anacostia river crossings this morning. coming up in my next report, we'll go into virginia at 5:10. the n.f.l. is investigating a former redskins coach this morning for an alleged bounty program. >> greg williams served as defensive coordinator in washington. he's accused of paying players for severe hits, even knockouts that would take an opposing

player out of the game. delia goncalves is live at fed ex field with reon the controversy. the big sto started with the new -- big story started with the new or lien saints and now other teams. >> reporter: it is actually expanding. even though a lot of players say this is kind of how the game has always gone, they all agree that paying for this kind of activity is well beyond acceptable means for the n.f.l. so now gregg williams later today will meet with the n.f.l. commissioner in new york to answer to these charges to talk about his actions not only in new orleans but here at fed ex field. gregg williams and his 22-year n.f.l. career are under intense scrutiny after an investigation revealed he paid players on the saints teams to intentionally injure players on opposing players from 2009 to 2011. his, quote, pay for pain program reached 50 grand at its

height. up to 27 players could also be involved and they could face some severe penalties up to fines and suspensions. the saints we're told could even forfeit draft shreks. -- draft selections. >> whether you get paid or not, i definitely think there's been players throughout the course of history that have gone out with the intent of trying to hurt someone. i don't think that is right. i don't think there's any place in our game for that. >> in a sport like football, the chase, the pursuit of the illusive lombardi trophy sometimes causes guys to lose their heads a bit. that's what makes this game exciting is the will to win and the guys who are willing to do anything to go out there and succeed. >> reporter: again, the n.f.l. has a long investigation under their belt into the new orleans saints. several thousand documents to prove that this pay for pain program was actually happening

on the new or lien saints. -- or lien saints -- orleans saints. several redskins players have gone on the record to confirm indeed a similar program was happening here at fed ex field when they were playing here at fed ex against other teams when williams was on the team from 2004 to 2007. coming up in my next live report in a half-hour, what coach joe gibbs has to say about the scandal and what williams himself is saying about all of this mess coming up in a half-hour. back to you, mike, jess. >> thanks, delia. the death toll -- the death toll continues to rise after tornadoes ravaged the midwest and the south. an indiana toddler found in a field didn't survive her injuries. >> right now a massive cleanup effort is under way even though most areas are still without power or cell service. but there are also stories of survival. terrell brown has more from

henryville, indiana. >> reporter: people in henryville, indiana are working together distributing water and sifting through donated supplies, food and clothing as they start to rebuild their lives. >> we're a tight knit place and we pull together when there's tragedy. >> reporter: two tornadoes hit henryville friday. one of them packed winds in excess of 165 miles an hour. the cleanup is under way but it's going to take time and henryville school officials are trying to figure out how they'll finish the rest of the year. the elementary, middle and high school complex was destroyed. it's the weather that could complicate cleanup efforts. winter weather watches, advisories and warnings are up across indiana and kentucky. up to four inches of snow can fall here in henryville. in west liberty, kentucky, utility trucks rolled in to help restore power. crews are working alongside neighbors who are picking through mounds of debris.

>> now we're going to have to start all over and we will. >> reporter: this woman's home was blown apart. she recover add few family photos but says she is one of the lucky ones. >> i have my husband and my family. that was my biggest fear when it happened because we weren't together when it happened. >> reporter: at least 39 people died across five states. 15-month-old angel backcok from indiana was the latest victim found alive in a field near her home on friday but died from her injuries sunday night. terrell brown, cbs news, henryville, indiana. vladimir putin remains russia's president. he will be at the kremlin for six more years. it was an outcome widely expected with him winning 65% of the vote. he told a crowd of supporters they triumphed over opponents intent on destroying russia's statehood upsurfing power. this election was not without allegations of voter fraud saying some of the people voted at multiple locations and others in certain jobs were

forced to vote for putin. opposition leaders are calling for demonstrations today. the leader of the left front said this is not an election. it's a shame. campaign 2012 now. here in the united states as we head into super tuesday, it's once again a battle between mitt romney and rick santorum. romney leads the delegate count. he spent yesterday in georgia where he served some pancakes instead of going after his republican rivals, mitt romney attacked the president's record instead. >> he's been in office for three years. i'm still waiting to hear what his jobs plan is, how he's going to make america more competitive, how he's going to put us back to work. >> rick santorum and mitt romney are locked in a dead heat in ohio which is always a key state at election time and it's up for grabs right now. santorum says romney has failed to close the deal with voters. he says this year's g.o.p. nomination may be decided at the republican national convention. santorum who spent yesterday in

oklahoma says he expects to do well in the south with the conservative voters. >> it's always harder when you've got two conservative candidates out there running in the race as we've seen in washington and we've seen in some of the other states. we have the anti-romney vote if you will, both gingrich and i are out there slugging away. >> newt gingrich seems to be fighting for his political life now. the former house speaker spent his weekend in his hometown saying georgia is a must win tomorrow for him. >> you lose all credibility if the folks who know you best repudiate you. >> more than 400 delegates are up for grabs tomorrow on super tuesday. ten states in all including virginia, georgia offers the most delegates with 76. some analysts say it appears the republican party seems to finally be rallying around mitt romney. majority leader eric cantor and senator tom colbert of oklahoma both threw their support behind romney yesterday. d.c.'s primary is april 3

and if you want to vote, today is the last day to do something about it if you're not already registered. today is the mail-in deadline to making changes to your party affiliation. election officials say in the last primary nearly 4,000 voters who cast ballots were never counted because they were not registered. you can check out your registration status by going to our website wusa9.com and then click on campaign 2012. it's at the top of the page. the time right now 5:10. i'm watching your money. we're pretty close to the dow 13,000. whether we get there again this week that could depend on the latest twists and turns in the greek debt crisis. investors also waiting on the jobs report due out on friday. so far today we are seeing red arrows in both asia and europe. checking the numbers from here at home, the dow stands this morning at 12,977, dipped a little bit on fri.

nasdaq lost -- on friday. nasdaq lost almost 13. as gas prices keep going up, police are warning that something else could go up, too. theft of gasoline. police in new hampshire are warning that drivers could drive off after fueling up without paying. police are also investigating new incidents where gas was stolen right out of people's gas tanks. nike cashing in on jeremy lin's rise to fame. they're selling lin themed sneakers, 135 buck as pair on the website. nike also launched its lin- sanity line of clothes at foot locker stores last month. they've been selling brinkly. >> i wondered if he could end up getting the trademark because he applied for it. 5:11 now. still ahead, a daring rescue to save the lives of three children after a building collapses on them. what rescuers did to get them free. plus, a bystander springs into action when he sees a man drowning and it's all caught on tape.

planner with temperatures that are going to struggle to get into the low 40s. by noon flurries and light snow south. this afternoon we'll see some of the clouds break up as the clipper pulls away. again highs low to maybe middle 40s. here's monika with time saver traffic. crews are looking for an accident on the outer loop westbound 495 after new hampshire avenue but before university boulevard. no lane information given yet. i'll have more information on this coming up in my next report. back you to, mike. thanks, monika. three children were arrested after being pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building in china. about 66 firefighters dug into the ruins with their bare hands. there were quite a few children ranging from ages from 6 to 14. it took rescue crews over an hour to pull the children to safety. the house they were in was crushed when another building suddenly collapsed. an amber alert for a 4-year- old little boy from carlsbad,

new mexico. authorities believe they believe they found the boy's body in a narrow hole near the boy's home. he was reported missing saturday. recovery efforts began yesterday with crews excavating the area. check this out. a portland, oregon man pulled from a river. it was all caught on video. bystanders saw the man in the river stripped down to his underwear, jumped if and pulled the man to shore. other bystanders performed cpr on the victim till the paramedics got there. still not sure of his condition this morning. an unbelievable police chase with more than half a dozen victims being hurt. that story coming up at 5:32. plus, the father of a student killed in that ohio shooting last week speaks to 9news about his loss. we'll be right back.

we're going to start chilly. some snow flakes. that will happen south of washington. some of you may even see a little bit of buildup on grassy surfaces but roads are going to stay wet. it's just too late in the season. unless you have a really heavy snow which we're not going to have, you can't overcome the temps. here's a look at the bus stop forecast. we can't rule out even in the next few hours that some flurries break out southwest of

washington, out toward culpeper, those areas. with temperatures this morning at the bus stop mid-20s to low 30s. our sunrise occurring at 6:34. next week at this time sunrise will be 7:30 'ish as daylight saving time is this weekend. we spring forward. 38 degrees by 9:00. can't rule out some flurries or light snow, areas south of town especially. that will be the case this morning into the early afternoon before the system really pulls away. when it does pull away, maybe some warm enough that we'll see snow or rain showers even. by mid afternoon things will be winding down and you'll notice the winds, north, northwest 10 to 15. that will give us even a little bit of a windchill down in the 30s. our clipper system is coming out of kentucky across west virginia now into southwestern virginia. there's roanoke, lynchburg, those areas picking up a little bit of that light snow this morning. you can see the system as it's

coming across the mountains out of west virginia here. it's trying to get up toward the charlottesville area. on the north edge of this, the air is kind of dry. with temperatures in the mid- to upper 20s, it's certainly cold enough to support snow, even sticking to the surface, but with the dry air, i think a lot of what we're going to see will just be evaporating, especially the northern edge. 30 in alexandria this morning. also in crofton. it's 28 for columbia. arlington is 31 and 28 in bethesda. outside on our michael & son weather camera, good visibility. a few more lights coming on. 32 degrees. feels like 26. this is the dryness i'm talking about. dew point only 20. you get a 12-degree spread. you want the spread to be a lot less or zero between those to for saturations. here's our storm system coming across the central appalachians. just a little bit too far south for us for a clipper but as you look at our future cast, tying to bring some of that snowfall near us as we get toward the

9:00 hour. but don't forget the northern edge of this, the air is dry. i don't think this is reaching the ground. we get through midday parts of southern maryland, maybe toward the lower eastern shore, you may be seeing a little light, wet snow. got a little buildup on the grass. there's a system in the atlantic pulling away. behind it skies are going to clear tonight. it's going to be a chilly night down in the 20s. as soon as tomorrow the wind direction will turn to the south. that will reverse the temperatures from downward to upward. today 44, some periods of flurries or light snow, especially south of town. tonight we're in the 20s. still kind of breezy northwest 10 to 15. tomorrow milder, 51. by wednesday there we go. we're back in the 60s. in fact upper 60s by thursday. and by friday a few showers, 55. don't forget your clocks forward this weekend and smoke detector batteries also a good idea. here's monika santami with time saver traffic. i don't have good news for commuters on the beltway north

of town. good morning, everybody. i'm sorry, howard but we're here at work already. there is an accident i told you about last time. maryland state police did find it on the on outer -- on the outer loop of the beltway. the two left lanes are blocked on the outer loop. that's westbound 495 heading into silver spring. we'll take a live look at college park. it's not affecting you yet here on the outer loop heading around 95 but then once you get past new hampshire avenue, expect that slowdown and stay to the right to get around it. we'll take you back over to the maps this time on 270 coming out of frederick. no problems. i-70 out of mount airy no problems there. we're looking good on 270 to clarks burke. the west side of town at the american legion bridge, once you're off 270, this is what you should expect heading southbound on the beltway into tysons corner why overnight construction has -- where overnight construction has also been picked up.

it is 5:26. talking about a little bit of snow this morning. snowing in roanoke and lynchburg. light snow. we may see some of that light know spread toward us. culpeper, frederickingburg, you have -- fredricksburg, you have a better chance. the air is really dry so i don't think much of this is going to reach the ground. some areas in southern maryland, fredricksburg, look at that. mid-30s here. lower 40s to the north where we'll get less precipitation if any. this thing is going to start to scoot away from us during the afternoon with highs low to maybe the middle 40s. so bundle up.

good morning. stephen strasburg made it clear he was anxious to get on the mound this year. he got a spring debut yesterday down in viera. looking pretty good for his first out there on the mound. the nats got their first run against the astros. bryce harper entered the game in the 6th. the astros crushed the nats 10- 2. it was senior day for the terps, sean mosley getting honored in the regular season finale. the terps down 3. going into overtime. mike scott with a great pass inside. virginia up 2. then time winding down once again and

welcome back. i'm jessica doyle in for andrea roane on this monday morning. get another cup of coffee. we have lots to share with you. traffic issues. monika has that. mr. bernstein is talking four, five different forecasts within one week. we've got winter today. we'll be back in nice springtime by wednesday. consider that. this morning it's cold out there, 20s and 30s. and we even have a little bit of snow in the forecast mainly south of d.c. we have a clipper coming. too warm for any problems on the roads other than them being wet. however, areas south of town may see some minor buildup on

grassy surfaces. i'm talk about that right now. let's get you going with a look at that day planner. temperatures now at 32. we'll be in the mid- to upper 30s by 9:00. by noon maybe a flurry here in d.c. but south of town, areas in fredricksburg, maybe over toward la plata, maybe down toward mechanicsville and culpeper, you have a better chance of seeing that little bit of snow on the grass than we do. noontime temperatures upper 30s to around 40. we'll finish the day mostly cloudy and 44 degrees with an area of low pressure coming out of west virginia. that's a little clipper system coming out of kentucky as well. already snowing in places like roanoke and lynchburg. you can see it south of charlottesville right now. spoke to charlie in catlett. he said he still has stars but clouds moving in quickly. call per is 27. we -- culpeper is 27. we sit at 32. don't be surprised if a couple

of snow flakes later on, highs in the low 40s. if you're planning to head out on the beltway, we have word from maryland state police that this accident we've been telling you about on the outer loop near university boulevard is five cars, minor injuries. everything is on the left side of the roadway. take a look at the delay it's causing on the outer loop. we'll take a live look from our mdot camera at new hampshire avenue. again barely moving trying to get over to university boulevard where you need to stay to the right to get around the accident. five cars involved there. let's go back over to the maps this time all the way down south into virginia on the northbound side of 95. at least there are no incidents to report here coming up from the occoquan river. looking good heading towards springfield northbound on i-95. again no problems to report at route 642 heading into fringefield. on the northbound side of 395 at duck street still running -- duke street still running at or above speed limit. an update on the accident in

silver spring coming up in a couple of minutes. close to a dozen people are recovering now after an accident involving a police cruiser, a metro bus, and a third vehicle trying to escape police. >> this is crazy. it all started in prince george's county yesterday with officers trying to stop a vehicle near the southern avenue border with the district. that vehicle took off, crashed into an suv and a metro bus at pennsylvania avenue. a police cruiser responding to that accident was then hit by the vehicle trying to get away. the suspect was arrested. eight people were transported to hospitals. >> there was a collision on the intersection that involved a metro bus and at least four other vehicles. >> reporter: how many people were hurt and how seriously? >> at this time as far as i'm aware, there are no life- threatening injuries. the suspect was injured as well as at least six other individuals. >> the driver of the car that police tried to stop has been charged with fleeing and eluding police. a man was stabbed to death

in southeast washington after an argument over a dog relieving himself in his yard. this all happened on highwood drive. police say when they got there, 37-year-old robert lee roy wright was suffering from stab wounds. he ended up dying at the hospital later. police arrested 56-year-old elseworth colbert, a volunteer for ward 7 d.c. council candidate kevin chavous, jr. chavous had this to say about the incident. >> people are shocked. we all are. i talked to people all over the area and we're very shaken by the news. it's unfortunate. when i heard it was over dog droppings or something in a yard and for someone, a young man to go out and walk his dog and not come home over something like that is just terrible. it's a tragedy. >> the manual has been charged with second-degree murder in the case. a prince george's county father is preparing to say his final goodbyes to his son, one of the victims in the ohio school shooting.

>> the 16-year-old is described by his father as a fun loving young man who was taken too soon. timothy hewlin of hyattsville said he last saw his son demetrius hewlin last year when he went to ohio to celebrate his son's birthday. demetrius was one of three students shot at chardon high school last monday. >> when i got that phone call last monday, it was devastating. i'm a religious person. i believe one day we all are going to meet up. >> hewlin says even though his son lived with his mother, he and his son had a great relationship. they traveled the country together and he says he can't imagine life without today demetrius. as the families of two more chardon victims prepare to bury their sons, hundreds gather in the square for strength. new memorials continue to be built in the center of town to show solidarity with the

families. >> my way personally of hoping that the feamtion that are involved and that are -- families that are involved and that are deeply touched by this can see that we feel for them and that they are in our prayers. >> students are going back to school for their second full day of regular classes. school had reopened for the first time on friday. n.f.l. defensive coordinator gregg williams is under fire for allegedly paying players to knock out opponents. today he's supposed to meet with n.f.l. security officers. williams who spent time on the redskins coaching staff is linked to pay for pain performance plans in 18,000 documents. delia goncalves is live at fed ex field in landover. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, jess. many fans know football is a very tough and violent sport, but a lot of folks expected at least it to be clean and fair. well, gregg williams is accused of muddying up the game by allegedly paying these players

off when he was with the new orleans saints and there was a good chance when he was with the washington redskins on the sidelines here at fed ex field. williams served as defensive coordinator for the new orleans saints from 2009 to 2011. he and up to 27 players are linked to a, quote, pay for pain program where williams would reward players who knocked out opposing players on the field. one former player says he was even paid up to $1500 for one sack. the scheme was allegedly ceardz out when the n.f.l. was -- carried out when the n.f.l. was trying to prevent head injuries and focusing on safety by changing rules and imposing larger fines for violent hits. in his 22-year n.f.l. career, williams was known to be a super aggressive and demanding defensive coordinator. take a listen to what this announcer even said during a saints game. >> for the new orleans saints, you're going to become more aggressive. you will become nastier and you will not back down.

>> i don't think it was any different through the course of my career that when you have a high profile guy, that you're always going to try the defensive player to do what you can to get them out of their game or get them off the field. >> reporter: williams released a statement friday of apology saying, quote, it was a terrible mistake and we knew it was wrong while we were doing it. instead of getting caught up in it, i should have stopped it. i take full responsibility for my role. i am truly sorry. i have learned a hard lesson and i guarantee that i will never participate in or allow this kind of activity to happen again. joe gibbs who was the coach of the redskins during the time when gregg williams was here with the team several years back says he does not approve this kind of activity. in fact, didn't even know it was happening but several redskins players are on the record saying indeed that this program was in place and was in play when they were here playing on the field.

a few flurries are going to be possible with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. best chance for that will be southwest of washington. those areas we were just talking about. your sunrise 6:34. it sets at about 6:06 this afternoon. so for the day planner here in washington, got a few flurries, even a period of light snow through midday and early afternoon. with temperatures well above freezing, roads will stay wet. that's not really going to be a factor here. winds northwest at 13 so windchills staying in the 30s. by tonight we're clear and chilly. 38 degrees by 8:00 p.m. it's going to abbrisk night. here's the clipper coming out of ohio and kentucky through west virginia now getting into virginia. some rain showers near 95. we've got snow in places like roanoke reporting snow. lynchburg, blacksburg all reporting snow right now. this is moving toward the east. notice the returns north of interstate 64, not all of that reaching the ground yet but with anticipation of some snows, we've got winter weather advisories well south of town, spotsylvania county, orange county, points south there.

could get an inch, maybe two on the grassy surfaces. that goes until noon. might just get an area there with a little buildup on the roads but for most of us it won't be a factor. upper 20s in gaithersburg and the patuxent naval air station. winchester also in the upper 20s. fredricksburg right now 33. clear skies or at least at the surface. good visibility on our michael & son weather camera with partly cloudy conditions at reagan national. notice the difference from the dew point and the temperature. a 12-degree spread. the air is dry. some of this moisture as it gets toward us is going to evaporate before reaching the ground. you can see where it's really tracking areas well south of washington. we'll put our future cast in motion and all a he see -- you'll see these echoes get up toward d.c. and west virginia anded panhandle. very my doubts as to how much the northern half of this is going to reach the ground. by the afternoon it will start to pull away and we'll see a mix of clouds and a couple of rain and snow showers left over

no problems across the american legion bridge. a live look on the northbound side of 395 looking pretty good still at duke street on our vdot camera. in my next report an update on silver spring in the next couple minutes. making news now at 5:54, president obama is preparing to meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu today talk about the growing tensions between iran and the rest of the world over the country's nuclear weapons development. israel threatened to use force to defend itself but president obama urged against it saying he wants to allow for sanctions to work. however, president obama said he will not hesitate to use force when it is necessary to defend the united states and its interests. one man is alive today because of a rehoboth, massachusetts police officer. the man's car crashed into the palmer river in massachusetts. the driver was trying to climb out of the broken windshield and then through the sun roof.

the officer said she knew she had to do something to help so she jumped in to keep the victim from doing anything dangerous. they threw the officer a rope to help her pull the man to safety. she said the rescue was all in a day's work. another animated film cleaned up at the box office. >> it also set a record for this year. keep it here.
