jc hayward is off. howard, what can we expect? >> we're seeing a picture out of thornburg, virginia, i-95. they got a lot of snow. this is route 15 and i-64 live now where the snow is sort of tapered down. incredible snow amounts in a small area from around charlottesville. i-95 is just wet from charlottesville across parts of albemarle and orange counties, we got anywhere from 6 to as much as 10 inches of snow. even spotsylvania i have some reports of 5 inches. in the purple areas, these are our winter weather advisories for another hour or so across charles and st. mary's counties. we're watching the snow south of town. this is similar to a few winters ago when we had 2 inches of snow and around march 2 or so, we picked up 5 and a half. well, this was the same type of setup except it missed us by

about 50 miles. southern fauquier toward culpeper starting to shut down. maybe one or two hours of snow left for southern maryland. the dark blue extending from spotsylvania and thurnburg, you can see a little enhance -- thornburg, you can see a little enhancement. that's a pretty good snow band. the difference in southern maryland, it's a bit milder. you may pick up an inch or two on the grassy surfaces. thankfully we're above freezing almost everywhere with 40 at national. la plata snow heavier south, 35 and about 40 on the bay. i will be back in a few minutes and talk about the return of springtime when i see you next. jessica, back to you. >> thank you, howard. the death toll from friday's tornadoes across the south and midwest now up to 39. and with snow covering much of the debris, the recovery effort

has become even more dangerous. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: 15-year-old courtney cummings walked with her parents past the wrecked high school in indiana this morning. the ninth grader won't be back in school any time soon. >> i want to be there. i want to be in my classes. i want to see my teachers and i want to see my friends. >> reporter: tornadoes killed at least 39 people and displaced thousands in five states. the latest victim was angel backcock. she was found alive in a field in indiana on friday after the rest of her family died. many hoped she would be the miracle survivor but the toddler died from her injuries sunday night. a new coating of snow that fell after the storm is complicating cleanup in many parts of kentucky andeanian. utility workers are trying to restore power as quickly as possible. >> they spray painted on the ground where we're going to put our poles and we can't see the spray paint. we have to try to clear the

snow off to make sure we don't hit utilities in the ground. >> reporter: the winter weather is also making conditions hazardous for homeowners trying to survey damage and make repairs. the heavy, wet snow is concealing nails, down power lines and twisted steel. in west liberty, kentucky there are signs of progress. cleanup is in full swing and some banks are reopening. volunteers are passing out food. >> we just felt the need to try to help. i know there's a lot of people out here that probably haven't had a hot meal. >> reporter: power in some areas may not be restored for at least a week. susan mcginnis, cbs news, henryville, indiana. some people in the san francisco bay area were awakened by an earth quake. the u.s. geological survey report said the 4.5 quake -- 4.0 quake struck at 5:30 this morning. so far no reports of damage. a california highway patrol dispatcher said the quake was felt throughout san fan.

israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is in washington meeting with president barack obama at the white house. issue number one is iran's nuclear weapons program. earlier this morning they discussed the threat and the desire to keep iran from developing the capability to build a nuclear bomb. >> in americans look around the middle east today, they see one reliable, stable, faithful ally of the united states, and that's the democracy of israel. americans know that israel and the united states share common values that we defend common interests, that we face common enemies. iranians know that too. >> president obama said a nuclear iran would be unacceptable to the u.s. he also told a pro-israeli conference yesterday there's been too much talk, loose talk, rather, of war with iran. the candidates are making last-minute pitches ahead of the super tuesday primaries.

the republican presidential hopefuls are hoping to check the momentum of the mitt romney campaign. voters will be going to the polls in ten states tomorrow, including virginia. randall pinkston has our super tuesday preview. >> reporter: mitt romney is fighting hard to widen his lead in ohio with just 24 hours to go. >> you have a big say as to who are nominee is going to be. >> reporter: that state is the most watched race out of ten super tuesday contests. a new quinnipiac poll shows romney gaining ground and his rival rick santorum slipping a bit. the two are now virtually tied. romney is trying to convince voters he is the best choice to shore up the nation's sagging economy. >> i understand what it takes to get a business successful and to thrive. i understand how government gets in the way. >> reporter: rick santorum argues the fact that romney has a big financial advantage and has not yet wrapped up the nomination shows voters aren't convinced the governor is the best candidate to challenge the

president. the former senator says if newt gingrich would call it quits then santorum's conservative message would lead him to victory. >> we're doing pretty well. in michigan we would have won easily. >> gingrich is focused on georgia, the state he once represented in congress. he needs to win there in order to stay in the race. the former house speaker sounds confident. >> i think i'm beginning to come back into being my real job which is to be sort of the visionary conservative who offers bigger, better solutions for the future. >> ron paul is still in the fight as well. he headed for alaska, the first g.o.p. candidate to visit that state this year. randall spirchgton, cbs news -- randall pinkston, cbs news, washington. 1,144 delegates are required for the republican nomination. mitt romney holds a solid lead going into super tuesday. the inflammatory words of rich limbaugh are proving a distraction on the campaign

trail. the controversy began after georgetown university law student sandra fluke testified in support of mandatory contraceptive coverage under the school's health care plan. limbaugh first called her a slut and a prostitute on his syndicated radio program and then apologized for the remarks this weekend. saturday's apology game sunday's -- became sunday's top show staple. >> an entertainer can be absurd. >> i don't think he's very apologetic. he's doing it because some people were taking their advertising off his program. it was his bottom line that he was concerned about. >> seven companies have pulled commercials from limbaugh's nationally syndicated show. one of them said his comments crossed the line. a man who led police on a wild chase this weekend is behind bars. it began with a police stop in prince george's county just off southern avenue. it ended when the suspect crashed into a suv and metro

bus on pennsylvania avenue around sunday afternoon. a police cruiser responded to the crash, was struck by the fleeing vehicle trying to get away. police arrested the suspects there. a total of eight people were hurt and taken to the hospital. a wrongful death suit filed by the families of two students killed in the virginia tech massacre heads to court today. school officials will be defending their actions nearly five years ago when the student gunman killed 32 people before taking his own life. it was the deadliest shooting spree in modern u.s. history. the suit claims officials waited too long before alerting students to the first shootings on the blacksburg campus. invite investigators will meet today with former washington redskins assistant coach gregg williams. williams who was also the defensive coordinator of the new orleans saints admitted running a bounty program where he paid players to inflict pain on opponents. redskins players also admit the payouts happened here in washington, too. observers say the league is

security is high in moscow today ahead of expected demonstrations protesting the presidential election of vladimir putin. opposition can be found in large cities among well educated professionals, but support for putin was strong in the provinces and his victory was never really in doubt. it was just a matter of how large the margin would be. as part of her 60th diamond jubilee, prince harry is representing his grandmother queen elizabeth touring the caribbean. tourists and locals packed the center of nassau, bahamas for a glimpse of the third in line to the thrown. it is the prince's first visit to the nation of 700 islands. the islands hold a sentimental value for him. that's where his father and mother famously held their

welcome back. there's been snow outside, howard bernstein. >> a couple of flurries here. we talked about conversational stuff. got a viewer down in stafford saying i thought you said conversational. i said we're talking about it, aren't we? i got reports spotsylvania saying eight inches of fluff on the deck. just powdery snow. stanton 4 and a half to 6. look at this one in bash bettersville in orange -- barbersville in orange county, 10 inches of snow. the elevation was just right. a heavy band of snow persisted. this is such a small area that got it. >> this is the stuff you can take your proof-- >> no, this is kind after wet snow with temperatures which have been hovering in the low to mid-30s it's clinging to a

lot of stuff. we're looking at snow now in southern maryland. got a picture i want to share with you. this is outside of spotsylvania -- outside of fredricksburg, excuse me, just a couple of hours ago. a real pretty snow. clinging to everything. here's a look at our day planner. we're pretty much done. we may have a couple of flurries or sprinkles lingering if we get warm enough as temperatures will hover around 40, maybe the low 40s. winds will be a factor out of the northwest at 10 to 15 miles an hour. so windchill is a little bit after factor this afternoon. then we dip into the 30s tonight. there it is. that is winter's last gasp now passing off to the south and east of d.c. sun is trying to come out here but it's in southern maryland where we're really starting to see the snow persist and also down 95. fredricksburg and spotsylvania, you guys will be done in the next 30 minutes or so as this stuff will be pulling east of 95. then you get to southern maryland, south of la plata, this is where the snow has been

picking up. we know we got at least an inch in western areas of st. mary's county. you may make it 2, maybe upwards of 3. the roads are wet. also bill in huntingtown reporting a little snow, not sticking much. there it s the heavier band north of lonual beach to south of mechanicsville to st. leonard. i think you'll see that for another hour to two hours tops. where it's snowing heavily, we have temperatures which are down in the low 30s with bill in newland saying he got 3 inches of snow to north and west sun is coming out. charleston, 37 degrees now. 34 in leesburg. 39 fort belvoir. up in columbia 36. crofton 39. so a chilly day. as we look outside, we still have generally cloudy skies on our michael & son weather camera with a temperature of 40. windchill is 33 right now with the north, northwest winds at

13. here's our clipper quickly moving through. some snow showers in the mountains now of west virginia, eastern kentucky. but as this slides away from us, we'll see a little bit of sun in a couple of spots but also the threat this afternoon for not much more than a passing flurry or snow shower and maybe even a couple of rain showers well south of town. but we've got the cold air in place, just cold enough for the snow. by 6:00 tonight, the storms off shore. a couple of flurries are left over. that's about it. the warm-up begins tomorrow. so for today low 40s here. mostly cloudy. a couple of flurries may pass through the district and southern maryland. again another hour or two and you'll be done. milder tomorrow. after being in the 20s in the morning, we'll get to the low 50s. look at wednesday and thursday. mid-60s wednesday. upper 60s thursday. delightful. friday we may see a few showers and this weekend clocks go forward. time change the weekend but temperatures are looking up. 60 saturday. 65 sunday. stick around. 9news now at noon will return in just a moment.

to our dentist and figure out how our gums are doing. >> exactly. 80% of people have gum disease. healthy gums don't bleed. don't say i floss too hard or brush too hard but healthy gums don't bleed. i can do a cleaning and take a sharp instrument to somebody's gums and they won't bleed if they're healthy. >> how do we prevent it. >> floss. nobody likes to hear that. a lot of times it runs in families so it could be genetic. you may have to floss more than once a day. but once a day is for everybody. make sure you go to the dentist, floss once a day, brush twice a day. flossing is so important. you could floss instead of brushing. if you're going to pick one, pick flossing. >> what about using some sort of mouth wash. >> it will definitely help. there is mouth wash that will kill the bacteria that will cause the damage but it does not replace flossing. >> thanks for coming in and taking care of our gums.
