cross hairs. they are at it again and by they i mean the food police. they have come down on chinese food, bacon, and now soft drinks. matt jablo with the breakdown. >> reporter: it's one of the listed ingredients for coke and pepsi as long as for those who can remember. as for the public interest or cpi, the caramel color will no longer be used to make cola. >> they need to ban the products that contain more of this cancer-causing contaminant than the agencies own's regulations would permit. >> reporter: it links it to several cancers. they told 9news that jeopardizing people's health simply to give cola the familiar brown hue is just not acceptable. >> there's 310 million

americans. we're saying that about 15,000 of us will develop a cancer because of the caramel coloring. >> reporter: in response, the american beverage association issued a statement questioning the science of the studies, cited by the chpi. the statement reads in part, "this is nothing more than chpi's scare tactics. their claims are outrageous. chpi fraudulently claims the operating room of the interest of the public's health when it is clear that only motivation is to scare the american people." will you drink any less soda as a result of the new information? >> probably not. >> reporter: in response to the entire caramel color controversy, here is what the washington area and all the residents and the long-time cola drinkers had to say. >> i think data could be tortured to tell any story, so i think that there is probably an element of truth to that and it is probably a stretch as well. >> most likely i'm going to stop drinking it. i'm going to tell my friends to stop drinking it too because

that's not good. >> reporter: for their part, the food and drug administration says they will be reviewing the request to have the caramel coloring removed from colas. but they added that all existing data indicates that coke and pepsi are safe to drink. derek? >> wow, matt. i thought that coke was on the health food. new at 11:00, intense moments on the george washington campus tonight. according to the secret service, there was a report of a man possibly armed with a gun running from the white house towards the g.w. campus around 9:00. campus police sent out an alert to all the students. the officers went searching, but the gunman was never found. they declared an all clear. the university wads never on lock -- was never on lockdown. tomorrow is super tuesday, that's when 10 states have primaries, caucuses, choosing 419 delegates. we delegated a look at super tuesday in general and west virginia is one of the super tuesday states that may play a

way to the convention. >> that is important to his continued candidacy. some virginia voters at that ron paul rally told them that they would like to see him leave a third party effort if he does not get the republican nomination. >> is that something you would do with them? >> i don't have any thoughts on doing this. and we got into the delegates, but i have no plans on doing that. >> do you intend to support the nominee? >> it depends on what their platform is and what they are standing for. >> well, that is far from a prom. the big one tomorrow is ohio. santorum had a lead in the polls late last month and now romney is ahead, but derek it's close. >> all right, thank you, gary. an update now on friday. the federal raid is targeting the office and the home of the prominent d.c. businessman, jeff thompson. according to the washington post, thompson's accounting business confirms that the office raid was connected to an ongoing federal investigation into the campaign finance and the district of columbia.

the company turned over campaigns hosted by jeff thompson. over the years, thompson has been one of the biggest campaign donors to candidates in d.c. he also owned the firm charter health, which is a medicaid management provider with a $320 million contract with the city. dog poop or dog attack? two totally different stories are emerging tonight following the stabbing death. and now witnesses, they say that he stabbed robert wright to death because the dog he was walking had left feces in his front yard. earlier today he said that it is totally wrong. that they cornered him and threatened him with the dog. >> anybody who is telling you that this case has anything to do with dog poop doesn't know what they are talking about. >> today, he plead not guilty

to second-degree murder. now, sky 9 was out over the scene right after the fedex truck rear ended a bus. it happened along this road here it in southern maryland. four students from the middle school were on that bus at the time of the crash. and the emergency crews, they had to take one of them to the hospital along with both of the drivers. and all three victims suffered non-life threatening injuries. the other student is on the bus and they were not hurt. maryland state police say that the bus was stopped at the time of the crash. no word on any charges being filed. a stolen bag full of meat shows you one crazy view of controversy. it was headed for the exit. and a cop happened to be inside. he runs after the meat man. the shoplifter jumped into someone's pickup, which was just right outside. the cop tries to smash out the window. the the man sitting in the big truck sees it all go down and

he tries to help the cop by crashing his truck into the pickup. >> and that was coming this way. and i guess he was trying to pin the car up against the wall to keep that because he was saying that's what the police were doing. >> well, it worked, kind of. the pickup scooted on to the safeway sidewalk, but the shoplifter hit the gas and nearly ran that woman over. but the pickup was so badly damaged that the suspect could not make it out of the parking lot. and police caught up and took him into custody. tonight, the residents in five states are trying to recover after the weekend storm spawned nearly 100 tornadoes. 39 people died in those storms, while hundreds of others were hurt. they tossed his father and the two children nearly 100 yards through the air. jackson recalls the chilling and frightening moments when that tornado was hitting down on them. >> i was telling them, you know, it's okay, but in my

a hateful message spread across the church tonight. now they need your help to catch the vandals. somebody spray painted racial slurs on the church on top of the road this weekend. deputies believe that it happened sometime between 8:00 on saturday night and 8:00 on sunday morning. and the sheriff's office says that they've got zero tolerance for this sort of crime. if you got any information, they would really like to hear from you. in montgomery county, young people serve adds jurors and then sentence their peers who were caught drinking, using drugs, committing other crime. now, the cameras have never been before allowed into the maryland courtroom until now. as you'll see, some of the minors accessed to blare their faces.

approach the 70s on thursday. especially the south of town. overnight tonight, we're going to stay with the clear skies, colder. a few blanket nights. winds are out of the northwest at about 10. now tomorrow morning, plenty of sunshine, but a cold start. grab a coat. temperatures in the 20s and the 30s. and thankfully the winds, not much of a factor. winds are northwesterly at 10 and then by the afternoon, plenty of sunshine. but still a little bit on the chillier side. the high temperature for you is 46 to 50. the winds are light. good news is they are also out of the south southwest at 10, bringing up the milder air, slowly, but surely, especially on thursday. the highs on tuesday. you might make 50 in arlington and springfield, but primarily in the 40s. 48 in rockville and downtown and college park 48. bowie at 47. maybe 48 in reston and fairfax and maybe only 47 out towards leesburg and down towards manassas. so the zone forecast if you jump the divide. only 35 for the friends in oakland. but then you'll get into the lower 40s for cumberland. plenty of sunshine for the mountains to the coast.

mid-40s for winchester, martinsburg. 47 in leesburg and warrenton. probably 37 in fairfax as well. downtown in the upper 40s. upper 40s to the near 50s in southern maryland. you had snow. southern st. mary's county had an inch of snow. 49 for annapolis. and there is a small craft advisory on the bay and title potomac until 10:00 in the morning. your day planner is 24 to 34 to start and clear skies. by noon, just chilly. temperatures in the 40s with lots of sunshine. mostly sunny by the evening. 47 to about 52. now the next three days. look what happens. milder on wednesday. we're in the lower 60s with the sunshine. and then on thursday, warmer temperatures in the upper 60s. if might be low. again, it might flirt with the 70s. to get through on friday, they will approach. and the the lower temperatures here are happening. and the clouds will be coming in with a couple late showers, but not a big deal. they will clear out nicely on

quite frankly neither should billy gate, nanny gate or in sports the so-called trip gate. now if you want to blame somebody for all of this, it turns out that william sapphire is the one who originally popularized this whole thing, but unliked the poor bill, the gate concept is apparently immortal or perhaps undead is more accurate. attaching itself to any hint of scandal and quite literally sucking the life out of it. you can't kill or it out last it -- outlast it. i don't know, the whole thing is a scandal, well, let's be real. absolutely refused to call it gate gate. him pay anyone for the injury of an opponent. the nfl will make a decision by the owner's meeting which starts on march 26. to the wizards. they are going for two in a row today. for they're hosting golden state with the back door pass to ellis for the dunk. and the warriors, they never trailed this game. the only bright spot is john wall, off the state here and the golden state turnover. he will be finding him for the double double tonight. 20 points, 14 assists, but the wizards really had no shot the at catching up. and the warriors, they set a season high as they crushed the wizards, 120-100. randy whitman apologized to everyone after the game who had to watch this movement. nicholas backstrom has been in sweden. he said that it was tough to be around the team every day not knowing when he would be able to play again. but they say that he is there visiting family members, not to see a specialist.
