never found. one of the biggest campaign donors in d.c. politics had his accounting office raided by federal agents. jeff thompson staffers confirm it was part of a federal probe. employees turned over documents related to campaign fund raising events hosted by jeff thompson. over the years thompson has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a multitude of d.c. candidates. he also owns a firm called chartered health, a medicaid management provider. it has a $320 million contract with the city. 57-year-old ellsworth colbert has pleaded not guilty in the stabbing of robert wright. witnesses say colbert stabbed wright to death because a dog wright was walking pooped on colbert's yard. but colbert said he was cornered and threatened with the dog. colbert has a long list of arrests and convictions in d.c. and prince george's county. a federal judge has ruled

maryland's handgun permit law is unconstitutional. the law's requirement that residents must show a, quote, good and substantial reason to carry a handgun infringes on their second amendment rights to bear arms. he says the maryland law is not sufficiently tailored to the state's safety public interest. there's new information about the cleanup of ground water near maryland's fort deetic. the national re-- dietrich. the national research group cites a study which found ground water contaminated is unlikely to have ill effects. cleanup in full swing after a tornado -- after tornado ravaged areas. the national weather service says at least 30 tornadoes

packed wind speeds of 110 miles an hour when they slammed into towns across the midwest and south on friday. a.o.l. says it's defending advertising on rush limbaugh's radio show. the company says it's biz of his derogatory comments about a georgetown university law student who testified about birth control. at least seven other companies have pulled ads from his show because of his comments. his show has also been pulled from two radio stations. jared loughner will continue to be forcibly medicated. an appeal by his lawyers to stop the med case was turned down in court. he's accused of killing six people and wounding 13 others during last year's deadly shooting rampage in tucson, arizona. monday's ruling allows authorities to keep giving him drugs. former washington redskins assistant coach gregg williams could face severe disciplinary action from the n.f.l. williams met with league investigators yesterday. he has admitted to running a bounty program in new orleans

500 was down by 5. there is mixed news on the economy back here in the u.s. the commerce department says factory orders fell 1% in january of the the biggest decline in over a year. businesses spent dramatically less on machinery after a tax credit expired. activity for service companies, including restaurants and hotels expanded at a faster pace than expected last month. and yahoo will reportedly lay off thousands in a massive restructuring. the struggling internet company is expected to announce the changes later this month. scott thompson became c.e.o. of yahoo back in january. he's trying to find ways to make the company more competitive with google and microsoft. face fook stole the domination from yahoo last year as the main display advertiser in the word. it's tough times for yahoo really trying to redefine what it is in this economy. >> microsoft going to make another bid. they keep fighting.

good morning and welcome back to 9news now. 4:43. howard is here with our forecast. a warm-up is ahead. >> a real interesting snow. it was so similar to march 8 -- 2008 and 2009. we had a winter where we had 2 inches of snow going into the beginning of march. march 1 and 2 we had a snow where we picked up five and a

half inches. had this storm been 60 miles farther north, it could have been a repeat of several years ago. but we got some flurries and snow showers. it was conversational around here but the real problem out toward charlottesville and some of those areas. barboursville had about 10 inches of snow yesterday. that's not that far away. i think winter is over. stick a fork in it. springtime is just about here. the bus stop forecast, temperatures starting in the 20s and 30s. it is a brisk morning but the winds thankfully aren't true strong. the sunrise at 6:32. as we look toward the days are lots of sunshine. winds will start northerly and then turn toward the south. by noon 43 and southeast. by 4:00 48. ignore the raindrop. i missed that one when i was making the graphic. we'll see a high near 50 today

with 43-degree reading at 8:00 p.m. and south wind at 8 miles an hour. tonight we won't be as cold, just 30s with a few spots dipping into the upper 20s. this morning under clear skies, 32 in washington. lots of low to mid-20s out across northern virginia from culpeper to winchester. out to the west we've got 30 degrees in easton down south. anywhere from the upper 20s in tappahannock and 33 at the patuxent naval air station. clear skies, good visibility. 32 degrees. dew points have dropped into the teens. so the air nice and dry and currently a north, northwesterly wind at 9. we have a slight windchill feeling like 24 out there. you see the arctic air toward quebec and ontario toward caribou maine. more importantly us for, the rise of the 50s coming up toward dallas, oklahoma city. that push of milder air is going to get this cold that's with us now out of here so that

never the next couple of days we're going to see a significant warm-up out our way thanks in part to this storm system coming into the northwest. there's rain and snow with this but this thing with the southwesterly winds ahead of it will take those warmer readings we just saw and kick them in our direction. so that while we're going to struggle to get around 50 today, i think we'll be closer to 65 tomorrow and closer to 70 by thursday. a couple of snow showers in the mountains yesterday afternoon and evening and right now it's up in the flakes. looking at the future cast, a quiet day ahead. temperatures from the south and temperatures pushing 60. the nighttime hours topping at 6:45, lots of sunshine here. we'll go through the day a wednesday, sunny. a passing cloud here or there but mostly sunny and mild day as temperatures tomorrow shoot into the 60s and even warmer still on thursday. this front thursday afternoon in toward ohio and western new york, that will bring us a

chance of showers on friday and cool us down a little bit. but we're still looking pretty good until that happens. as we look at the forecast, today about 50 degrees. a little cool, winds turning to the south at 5 to 10 in the afternoon. tonight we're dipping into the 30s and upper 20s. look at the nice warm-up tomorrow. 65. going to be a little breezy too tomorrow and thursday. could have some gusts over 20. by thursday i think we're going to be around 70 for the afternoon high. as we head toward friday cooling down in the 50s with showers around. saturday 54. saturday night this is the weekend, the time change. we sprint forward. so going to lose an hour of sleep but the sun will set that much later. sunday 65 and monday 68. could be some showers late monday into tuesday. it is 4:47. monika is in now with time saver traffic. >> thanks so much. good morning, everybody. things are looking great outside. just have the usual construction sites especially the west side of town but this time i'm going to focus on the north side coming in from i-70 and 270.

all lanes open and down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll take a live look at 270. this is a good indication at shady grove road of the length of 270 in from frederick. it's very quiet through rockville. we'll take a look again at the map and this time over on the other side bw parkway and route 50 are fine inside the beltway. on the inner loop between route 50 and 202, two left lanes were blocked overnight with construction. so be aware of that. they should be clearing that up within the next ten minutes. we'll take a live look at new york avenue at 9th street. things are still moving well. coming up in my next report, we'll focus on virginia at 4:55. 4:48 now. a plan to impose a 5 cent fee on paper and plastic bags, that plan is back on track in prince george's county. a few weeks ago that proposal seemed dead. but now a key of house delegates committee has approved a plan meaning the measure will soon go before the full house. the prince george's county council and rushern baker

support the bill. a new report from the center of science in the public interest could make you think think twice before you grab another cola. >> reporter: it's been one of the listed ingredients for coke and pepsi for as long as most people can remember but if cspi has its way, caramel color will no longer be used to make colas. >> the fda should ban products that contain more of this cancer causing contaminant than the agency's own regulations would permit. >> reporter: citing studies that link several types of cancer to a chemical in caramel coloring, the head of the cspi told 9news that jeopardizing people's health simply to give colas their familiar brown hugh is just not acceptable. >> there's 310 million americans and we're saying

about 15,000 of us will develop a cancer because of the caramel coloring. >> reporter: in response the american beverage association issue add statement questioning the science -- issued a statement questioning the science of the studies cited by the cspi. it reads in part, this is nothing more than cspi scare tactics and their claims are outrageous. cspi fraud dentally claims to be operating in the interest of the public's health when it is clear it's -- its only motivation is to scare the american people. will you drink any less soda as a result of this new information? >> probably not. >> reporter: in response to the entire caramel color controversy, here's what some washington area residents, all of them long-time cola drinkers had to say. >> i think data can be torture to tell any story so there's probably an element to truth to that but it's probably a bit of a stretch as well. >> i most likely going to stop drinking it because that's not good. >> people in our newsroom say

they're not going to stop drinking it. >> clear cola, come on. >> the food and drug administration says it will review the quest to have the caramel coloring removed from colas. the fda added all existing data indicates that both coke and pepsi are safe to drink. british researchers say more evidence is needed on the safety and effectiveness of knee replacements. researchers at the university of oxford are calling for better, long-term monitoring of patients so surgeons and patients have more information to make better decisions. they say there's a lack of evidence on the safety or cost effectiveness for many of the implants and little reliable data comparing implants and surgical techniques. more than 650,000 total knee replacements were performed in the u.s. in 2008. the american college of physicians is releasing new cool low recollect al cancer screening guidelines. they say doctors should risk
