5:00 p.m. watching a weak system through the great lakes but all is quiet around here and cold. look at these readings. down to 21 manassas. culpeper 21. the heavier snow just south through albemarle and orange counties. about 26 in la plata this morning while cambridge is at 30. we're looking at highs later good 3:00, 4:00 or so maybe 48 for baltimore. 50 here in d.c. we could see a few spots south and west into the low 50s. let's go to monika at 6:00 a.m. and tell you what's happening with time saver traffic. thank you so much. we've been telling you about this accident on the eastbound side of 123 at the entrance to the c.i.a. we know the tow truck arrived. it's not causing much of a delay in that area. i'm happy to say if you're headed to route 123 you'll see the flashing lights but no big delays to get that on the inbound side of 66 it's beginning to bunch up right here in centreville. we'll take a live look closer into the beltway near route 50 and 123. you'll be okay.

whole day. so it's going to be a long one for a lot of the folks inside. 49 delegates are at stake here in virginia. romney is expected to take the race. that's because the former massachusetts governor and ron paul are the only two names on the ballot because they were the only candidates to get the 10,000 necessary signatures to get on the ballot here in virginia. but romney and santorum are really focusing their energies today on ohio and the 69 delegates up for grabs in that state. the front runners focusing on the economy and manufacturing jobs that have been outsourced. >> there's a lot of jobs that are actually very good high paying jobs that take skills that we are losing and we can get back. and those are the jobs we're going to attract. >> they also steal our designs and our patents and our brand names and our know-how. >> reporter: gingrich expects to come in third place in ohio so is now focusing in the south

the search for a gunman heading towards george washington university turned up nothing. the secret service tipped off authorities at the school. agents reported seeing a gunmen leaving the area around the white house and heading towarded campus yesterday. the school says it's notified students and staff through its campus alert system. campus police searched the area but found nothing. charges could be filed against the driver of a fed ex truck. it crashed into a school bus yesterday on route 2 in calvert county, maryland. a student from windy mill school and both drivers were rushed to the hospital. their injuries are not life- threatening. the bus was stopped at the time of the collision. the deanwood metro station on the orange line is metro's most dangerous. the washington examiner reports the station in northeast had 67 crimes classified as part one for serious crimes. that list includes assaults, burglaries, rapes and car thefts. number two on the most

california state capitol. they were protesting cuts in in tuition hikes. president obama will speak at a high school graduation in joplin, missouri. a year ago that town was devastated by a massive tornado that killed 160 people and damaged 2,000 buildings. communities across the midwest and south spent a lot of money on their early warning system for tornadoes but in one community no one ever turned the system on. >> that would be branson, missouri. a tornado ravaged the downtown entertainment district there. fortunately no one was killed. the city's early warning system is supposed to send automatic messages when a tornado is on the way. the company that made the system never turned it on. that problem has now been fisted. what systems are in place here? >> reporter: as we head into

spring, sites like this, a tornado, full of violent rotation and oftentimes leaving a path of destruction are more likely, even for the d.c. area. >> things can happen very quickly in the atmosphere in a matter of a few minutes. a tornado can spin up andly within a minute or two from a rapidly growing updraft. >> reporter: with new upgrades to its radar in sterling, virginia, meteorologists will be enter analyze the returns like rain, snow and severe thunderstorms that could form into tornadoes. >> this radar will allow the meteorologists to go in and see where there are areas of high winds or rotation. >> reporter: once the national weather service issue as tornado warning, emergency managers with the affected counties are contacted and within minutes alerts go out. >> there's a severe weather system approaching. >> reporter: officer of emergency management officials at montgomery, loudoun, fairfax and arlington counties all have systems set up to send out text alerts to cell phones and e-

mails but that's only if you sign up through their websites. >> we also rely on social media. all of our text messages are hooked into twitter and facebook. we have accounts on both of those sites so we push out information to the broadest audience that we can. >> reporter: arlington county, la plata and the university of maryland college park are the only places in the region that have tornado warning sirens. that's where emergency managers can transport a preordered message or speak into a microphone to tell people exactly what's going on. >> one of the best ways to -- [indiscernible] >> these things are a necessity. it's one of those things shoe have a flashlight, a weather radio. a big alarm will go off and wake you up. we heard of people sleeping in the house and a storm is coming and they don't hear it.

nice picture. clear skies, 30 degrees. feels like 24 with the windchill and the dew point still in the teens. the barometer continuing to rise. story in the northwest. this comes on shore, brings the jet stream down southwest and rises in the east. that means a warm-up is in store us for. that's why i'm pretty confident about the 60s tomorrow and 70 on thursday. the only system we have this morning, a weak one with some snow showers in the great lakes. that's going to pass well to our north. we may get a passing cloud but generally a very sunny day. tonight, tomorrow here come the winds on wednesday out of the southwest. that's going to boost our temps in the 60s and even toward 70 on thursday. i do want to point out the showers here in michigan and back toward chicago and central illinois on thursday morning, that front gets here friday. that's why we've got to get rain back in our forecast for the end of the workweek. 50 degrees today. tonight we're in the 30s to upper 20s. cold but not as cold. as we head toward tomorrow, 65, breezy and even warmer

another big story, the presidential campaign. super tuesday in the race for the republican nomination. >> ten states will hold contests today. ohio may be the closest race. about 30 minutes ago the polls opened in virginia. >> that's where delia goncalves is this morning. she's live in falls church. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. we're live outside falls church community center. general registrar david burkey told me some time ago this early part of the morning should be the busiest part of the day. unfortunately it looks pretty slow from where we are. but to get some expert opinion, let's talk to mr. burkey himself. what are your thoughts, what you have you seen so far? >> word is from the ward so far in our city there weren't that many people in line at 6:00 a.m. in fact, from two of them there was nobody in line. turnout is going to be quite low today. >> reporter: can we make the correlation between low voter turnout and the two names that appear on the ballot, only mitt

romney and ron paul? >> between mitt romney and ron paul the polls aren't showing that those two are neck and neck in this state. generally the polls are going to indicate that romney is -- [ inaudible ] >> you said -- >> reporter: you said every vote in every election is important. let's talk about what we did in the last hour when we interviewed you when you said the 10,000 signatures seemed to be the issue in this race. but changing that would be a very expensive change. >> sure. the state of virginia used to allow digital electronic equipment which city of falls church has. so we can have write-ins if we want. but no hoppinger the general assembly -- longer the general assembly voted you cannot have digital equipment. you can only purchase the paper ballots. the problem becomes with the primary with dual primary, republicans and democrats both

having a primary, you have to have two sets of scanners in each polling place. the scanners cost thousands of dollars and with some places like fairfax county having over 230 precincts, that's a lot of money over the whole state to change. one write-in change on the ballot will make it very expensive in this budget. >> reporter: even though you said you sometimes as a voter may feel frustrated that you can't write in our own candidate but it is an expensive and long process. >> it should be an easy change but it's technically two elections on that day. >> reporter: polls will still close at 7:00 p.m. >> 7:00 p.m. >> reporter: every election is an important one according to lots ever folks and the trudge star here so he will be -- and the registrar here so he will be here till 7:00 p.m. there are also low primaries in d.c. and maryland. >> thank you. while republicans are focused on super tuesday, the

president is going to hold his first live news conference ever the sort of new year. we'll bring it to you at 1:00 this afternoon. we'll have live coverage on wusa9.com and get reaction on 9news now beginning at 5:00 this afternoon. a federal judge says maryland residents shouldn't have to prove why they need to carry a gun outside their holes. he's found the sta state's handgun -- found the state's handgun rule unconstitutional saying it violates the second amendment. itself case revolved a retired navy veteran in baltimore county. his permit renewal was denied in 2009 because he couldn't prove he was being threatened outside his home. a suspect at a botched attempt in northwest d.c. is facing charges. police chased 41-year-old alfred jerome reeves, jr. out of the store after he allegedly shoplifted something. an officer tried to get him pulled over to the side and out of his suv but couldn't get in. that's when a rental truck

driver smashed into the suspect's vehicle and pinned him until police could slap on the handcuffs. if you are a regular soda drinker, we have a health alert that may may think you twice before you crack open your next can. the group for the center of science in the public interest says there is a carcinogen in coke and pepsi. the problem they say is with the caramel coloring. it is what gives regular and diet colas the distinctive brownish color. they say it has high levels of 4mi which causes cancer in animals. >> there's 310 million americans and we're saying about 15,000 of us will develop cancer because of the caramel coloring. >> the american beverage association questions the science of the study. it released a statement saying in part, quote, this is nothing more than cspi scare be tactics. their claims are outrageous according to the soda
