about. 9news reporter delia goncalves is live in our satellite center with more. delia? >> reporter: jessica, even though ron paul didn't take any states last night, he's still claiming victory. he was rallying supporters last night vowing to push on in this race. let's take a closer look at the breakdown of the states and the results from last night. you can see mitt romney here really took a lot of states. ohio, massachusetts, virginia, vermont, idaho, and he also took alaska and the eight delegates there. rick santorum took tennessee, north dakota and oklahoma gaining a good number of delegates. newt gingrich of course as expected won his home state of georgia and the 46 delegates there. and while i said ron paul won no state last night, he still gained some delegates in each of the states that he did gain a little momentum. romney walked away with wayne overall but other than virginia, failed to gain any southern state. political pundits say that indicates a weakness in the

romney campaign that he still cannot resonate with southern voters who do not find him conservative enough. >> this campaign is not just about a name on a ballot. it's about saving the soul of america. it's driven by an unshakable optimism that lies within the heart of every american citizen. on november 6 we're going to stand united not only having won an election but having saved a future. >> in my next live report, we'll take a close look at the all important delegate count and how much they need to gain the nomination. back to you. >> thank you, delia. sometimes the race for the nomination is over after super tuesday. not the case this year. edward williams is a political analyst and is here with a look about what comes next for these candidates. mitt romney had a big win. ohio, that's a big deal, but he hasn't exactly sewed this thing up yet. what is next for the candidate?
5:33 am
>> what's next for the candidates is mississippi and alabama. that's going to be a challenge for romney because what we saw last night with santorum winning in tennessee and in oklahoma is that romney is having a really hard time appealing to southern voters and specifically to working class what we call blue collar white voter. that's the majority of the votes in states like mississippi and alabama. people like gingrich appeal tom because of the rhetoric. he's a southerner. he speaks their language. that's really important. santorum is a religious conservative and that appeals to them. so the win that we saw there in tennessee i think was really key because 72% of those voters identified as evalue gel cal. so we -- evangelical. we can talk faith. i'm not sure how much that plays into the vote but that clearly seems to be a subtext there that will be difficult for romney. he's going to have to do a bit more work to shore up the

nomination. >> let's talk about virginia for example since we did have the primary here yesterday. mitt romney won. this was not a close race in any way, shape or form because he was only against ron paul. i'm a northern virginia resident. what i find interesting is you're not seeing the signs for mitt romney in a purple area of virginia. you would think he would be their candidate but there doesn't seem to be a ton of enthusiasm. the turnout was low yesterday. what is going on for mitt romney? >> i think virginia is an interesting state. like you just said, you are a northern virginian. virginia has pockets of conservatism but it's actually still quite a liberal place. there are people who work in washington and live in virginia who don't necessarily identify with people who would necessarily be from the south of virginia. so i think that the fact that he was the only person on the ballot besides ron paul did him wonders because it's not really a place that i think mitt romney would have naturally done well. the fact that newt gingrich and santorum weren't able to get on
5:35 am
the ballot was a real struggle for them. but what it says about romney and what you've touched on is that he still is having a problem getting above that 25%. for some strange reason mitt romney just isn't catching on. that's an authenticity problem. this is an issue that he's had throughout his career, particularly throughout this primary fight. people don't resonate with him. and i'm not sure if that's his blue blood background or if it's something that the voters can feel about mitt romney. >> you're coming back. we're going to keep this conversation going. in the meantime we'll send it back to mike. >> see you in a little bit. testimony is under way in the wrongful death lawsuits now from the virginia tech massacre. parents of two students killed in the april 2007 shooting are suing the families of erin peterson and julia pride say their main goal is to get a full account of the day's events and an apology from school administrators. they believe students should have been warned much sooner
