the shoulder at one point. toles has said in the past that she will voluntarily give up driving her county car until she completed a safe driving course. reporting live in largo, scot broom, 9news now. >> we have some breaking news for you coming out of montgomery county. sky 9 out over, keeping an eye on a deadly shooting in aspen hill. this is the 13,000 block of superior street. and the police tell us the shooting was inside a home and a young man is dead. the armed suspect or suspects are still out there somewhere and investigators are canvassing the area with canine units as well as helicopters like that one you just saw. we'll keep on monitoring this one and bring you more information. anita. george mason university students on edge tonight two. armed men burst into an offcampus townhouse and robbed the students living there at gunpoint. the suspects are still at large. kristin fisher joins us live from the scene with the latest on the police investigation.

kristen. >> anita, this is a neighborhood that is home to many gmu students. in fact, you can actually see the campus from this backyard and this is the same backyard where these students were playing soccer just a few days ago. but when they went inside, they forgot to close the back door. that one mistake could have cost them their lives. >> one of the scariest things that have happened in my life. >> just sitting around studying for midterms when two masked men barged in with guns drawn. >> get on the ground. you know, stuff like that. stuff nobody wants to hear. >> ski masks, face paint, you know, the whole deal. >> at first, they thought it was a joke. >> what is this? i'm in college. is that real? in the long run, when the gun is pointed at your face, you're like, oh. >> the two men did mean business. they took about $3,000 worth of laptops and cell phones.

but pat and anthony say the men were ill prepared. >> that was the goofy thing. they didn't bring a bag or anything. he was carrying a laptop down the street. >> they turned away from the group. people were not separated properly and gave the chance to call 911. >> fairfax county police were on the scene less than 5 minutes later. they brought in a canine unit and helicopter, but the suspects still got away. now police are trying to determine if they had been here before. they are both of college age, around 20, and police had already been called here back in november after a fight broke out on this front porch. >> you have to kick some people out sometimes, and when someone is leaving your house, screaming threatening and cursing, as the cops are on their way because all the commotion. we don't figure something like this is a retaliation. but it's an extreme measure if it wasn't. >> now that is just a theory, but it's a theory police are currently investigating. and keep in mind, these

students still had to get through this school day. pat evans, who you just heard from, he had two midterms today and stayed up all night talking to police. talk about a good excuse. it's a lot better than dog ate my homework. >> hopefully his teachers will give him lee way. kristin fisher, thank you. park police need your help to find two robbery suspects who struck near dupont circle. take a good look at the surveillance photos. this woman used the victim's credit card. they say the other suspect, a man, hit the victim in the head with a replica handgun. this happened on saturday, february 18, at 20th street and connecticut avenue. the woman was last seen in the area of p street, driving what's believed to have been a two-door white mitsubishi eclipse. three suspicious packages containing white powder showed up at locations around town. initial field tests showed no

their loud speakers. understandably so. i mean, payton changed the face of football in indianapolis. he brought them a super bowl and he took the team to the playoffs for nine consecutive seasons. but now that era is over. the colts that are in a rebuilding phase of sorts. after several long talks, the owner decided it was in the best interest of the team to part ways. you could tell just watching today's press conference, both men who got choked up numerous times have deep respect for each other. >> i have been a coach for almost all of my adult life. but i guess in life and in sports, we all know that nothing lasts for ever. >> it's been very difficult and just tearing at our hearts to try to look at the situation and find the best solution. >> now as manning moves on, he doesn't have to wait until the free agency market opens next

tuesday. sources close to the redskins says the team is willing to deal with the risk health wise and pursue manning. but manning isn't sure where he wants to go. this is fresh. but also unchartered territory. he's only ever played for the colts. he did stress, he does not want to retire. >> we have to see if that arm regenerates. all right, thank you, kristen. back to you. >> thanks derek. republican presidential candidate, mitt romney, sured up his front runner status. by winning six of yesterday's ten supertuesday contests. but many of the races were very close, including the key one ohio. and romney didn't do well in the south where he lost to santorum in tennessee and oklahoma. newt gingrich won only the state of georgia. the state he represented in congress, but says he is going to stick it out in this race. still, more and more key republicans like house majority leader, eric cantor, are getting behind romney as the

only candidate with the money and organization to take on president obama in the general election. >> mitt romney and the reason why the voters are going to elect him is because he's the only candidate in the race that has a plan to turn this economy around. if you look at all the information coming out of the election, the primary elections last night, it is that issue, the economy and how we're going to get our economy and the deficit straight in washington and get jobs going again is what matters to people. mitt is a good conservative. i think he telegraphs a general election between results and things that matter to people. stopping the crazy debt. versus a lot of talk and empathy. that's a good general election for him. he doesn't have to win a popularity contest. he has to win a results contest. >> let's take a look at the current delegate count for the gop. romney still has a healthy lead with 415 delegates. santorum in second with 176. newt gingrich at 105.

a norwegian man has been

formally indicted. it was norway's worst peacetime massacre. he faces terror and murder charges and confessed to them. still, prosecutors say most likely he will not go to prison. that's because the 33-year-old is what they call an extremist psychotic and he'll be committed most likely for the rest of his life. the chief of virginia tech's police department took the stand today in the civil trial dealing with the 2007 massacre. the parents of two of those shooting victims filed a lawsuit. in it, they claim the police and university just waited too long to alert students about the possibility of a gunman on campus. today, corporal stephanie testified that that initial call was for a possible suicide or somebody falling out of a dorm room bed. she said and we quote, i did not believe others were in danger. >> people in charles county, maryland, are being urged to come to the rescue of a food bank that has shut down.

the southern maryland food bank in hughesville closed temporarily due to a severe shortage in food donations. the plan is to reopen on monday, march 19. that is if the food bank gets enough donations. the food bank says it needs at least 15 to 18,000 pounds of food each week. anita. >> we all know it's been a border line balmy winter here in the d.c. area. in fact, the national weather service says this has been the third warmest winter on record. but with the good news comes the bad. you don't have those sub freezing temperatures and you get an early return of bugs. what kind of bugs are we talking about? >> we are talking all kinds of bugs. good and bad, which includes mosquitoes and also those fleas, which affect our pets. >> it's a huge increase in pest activity is making our business very good right now. >> the creepy crawly critters are coming if they are not already here. pest control experts warn get

ready for what could be a pest filled spring and summer. >> paul hoffman with the pest control says ants are showing up earlier than usual, and mosquitoes which can contain the west nile virus may not be far behind. in fact, in his 16 years in the pest control business, this past winter was his busiest ever. but not all of this bug news is bad news. that's because nature likes to balance itself out. so the idea is, if there are more bugs, there should be more predators eating them. antnologists, or bug lady, says don't start trying to kill all the bugs. some are actually good for your flowers and plants. >> for example, my peony's. i caught her outside spraying them. it's the ants that make them so beautiful. >> experts add homeowners

his estranged wife. >> prosecutors say daniel mendoza had every intention of going through with this plan. matt jablow joins us with this. >> reporter: prosecutors layed out daniel mendoza's plan. prosecutors say daniel mendoza was in the process of being deported for living in the united states illegally. >> the police executed a flawless investigation. >> but now, he could spend the rest of his life in the u.s., behind bars. >> mr. mendoza had been seeking someone to kill his wife. >> the 48-year-old mendoza offered a hitman money and his car to kill his estranged wife and boyfriend. mendoza went as far as going to the twin brook metro station in rockville and as his wife was

firefighters have spent hours today fighting a wind fueled brush fire in michigan. it broke out this afternoon in auburn hills. that's near the great lakes crossing mall in oakland county. no one has been hurt and so far, there are no plans to evacuate any businesses. but you can see the damage there. investigators believe this all started in a compost dumping area. >> in buckeye, arizona, a massive wild fire continues to send smoke and flames into the area there. firefighters there are having a tough time because the high winds are really making it difficult. so they are letting it burn, since at this point, it doesn't pose a threat to any home. investigators say that one started as a controlled burn by a farmer that quickly grew out of control. >> lava consumed one man's home over the weekend. >> jack thompson went to see the damage on saturday. his was the last remaining home in this area and he said it

all right, in this health alert, we are talking about parenting toddlers. you have to expect the un expected, but it's hard to prepare with the breath holding spell. a young child stops breathing and passes out. although these episodes pass quickly, a parent's fear can

linger for years. >> that seven-year-old alexander settling in for a chapter of harry potter. >> before harry could answer. >> his mom remembers every terrifying detail of the time he went limp in his dad's arms. >> i immediately went and called 911 because my husband said he's not breathing. >> alexander was a year and a half old and had just taken a fall, he let out a huge cry. as his parents called for an ambulance, he was starting to revive. >> the doctor said, oh i know exactly what this is. it's a breath holding spell. >> 5% of children will have at least one breath holding spell. most often between the ages of 1 and 3. a palette spell, starts with a minor injury. the heart rate flows and the child passes out. happen when a child becomes angry or upset, like having a tantrum. >> they often start crying very hard and then all of a sudden, there is silence and they stop breathing.

they can turn purple or blue and may pass out. >> there's nothing you can do to prevent breath holding, but if it happens, try to cushion the child's fall and make sure his or her tongue isn't blocking the air way. alexander had a couple more episodes before he grew out of it. >> it happened maybe three or four times and i knew what to look for. >> thank goodness they do grow out of it. these breath holding episodes pass in less than a minute. most kids don't need treatment, it is a good idea to talk to your pediatrician if they keep happening. the u.s. food and drug administration is turning to a new tool to spread the word about food recalls. it's going to start using twitter to issue states specific safety alerts. for maryland, you would fall the alert feed. in virginia, it would be the va ssis alert and in d.c.. i may need to put an alert to

temperatures in the 60s. 64 in manassas. down to the south, 65 for belle belvoir. check out the winds. 33-mile per hour wind gusts downtown. winds are howling out of the south. that's a warm wind and continue tonight and tomorrow. then the winds are going to change, so warmer than cooler. breezy and milder tonight. windy and warmer on thursday. you will need your umbrella thursday night. that's the bad news. good news is, just until thursday night, we should be in good shape on friday, returning partly cloudy, breezy and cooler. but most of the showers will be out of here by the predawn hours on friday. 8:00 in the morning tomorrow. a dry commute. some clouds to the north and west. maybe some showers out in the mountains by lunchtime. but in the immediate metro area, very nice. we get into 7:45, 8:00 tomorrow night, still showers, cumberland west, but still nothing in the immediate metro area.

really for jim, for payton, for the indianapolis colts and the whole city. the whole city, i think, is mourning today. this guy is -- what he has done for the city is incalculable and it's going to be a great loss. people are excited that andrew luck is coming in, but peyton manning has been the face of this city for 14 years and it's hard to imagine it without him. >> of course, attention now is going to turn to where he ends up next. reports saying the redskins will pursue peyton manning. what are your thoughts on that situation and the likelihood that he may end up in washington? >> well, i mean, i think washington is definitely one of the places he would consider, even though it's in the same division that the new york giants play, that his brother plays in, but with washington, you're talking about mike shanahan and i was in denver in the 90s when mike shanahan took

john elway, also at the age of 36, to two straight super bowl championships. so, you know, mike i think and his presence would be appealing if it's the right set up and the right money and dan schneider has never shown any hesitation about spending money. so, you know, i think miami is in the mix. i think arizona. i think the jets and i certainly think the redskins would have to be a consideration. >> mow payton today in the press conference is very vague about his health. he said he has been throwing and he is making progress, but didn't come out and say i'm 100% ready to play. what knowledge do you have of that situation? >> well, he's making a lot of progress. he's made rapid progress from what i'm told in the last couple of weeks. with an injury like this, once the nerve regeneration is complete, the strength in the arm and the shoulder can come back pretty rapidly. you see major improvement in a short time. so you know, if you ask them to play nfl football tomorrow, the
