selling to minors and still in business. new information on a startling plot using your school as the target. >> white mow deer falls out of an envelope and emergency responders race to the scene. could it be the kind of anthrax that killed here in washington 11 years ago? >> the panic is shared both in d.c. and in several other states that have received these letters in the last several days. authorities are trying to figure out why it's happening and who is responsible. gary nurenberg is here with the latest. >> derek this has been going on, on and off, since february. a government building in florida, schools in the northeast, and today washington. it looked like elementary school children were the target, the adams campus of the school was evacuate wednesday for two hours after white powder fell from a letter received there. authorities told 9news now initial field tests showed that the powder was not dangerous. letters were also received at

the willard hotel and a nearby business on f street. again, initial tests showed no danger. >> it's very hard to catch the perpetrator. that's the hard part says david willman, author of "the mirage man." there's an easy part. >> i think it's a very cheap, easy, and anonymous way for someone to try and make a point, or to grind an axe. they can bring a building to a halt, they can have it evacuated, they can in their way punish an institution. >> reporter: this week most of the institutions have been schools. this one in newington, connecticut, was one of two evacuated in that state. a similar story at this school in clinton. a postmark there showed arlington, texas. >> we did a shelter in place

which means students stayed within their classrooms. >> reporter: quick tests determined the powder was not dangerous, but as in the other schools, disruptive. in washington the fbi has the lead in the investigation, better prepared now than when d.c. was first hit in 2001. >> i think it's probably a nature and day difference it the fbi has the benefit of having mound the learning curve, not only of the anthrax letter attacks of 2001 but hundreds if not thousands of hoax letters that have come both before and after the anthrax attacks. the fbi tells 9news now it is currently investigating four incidents here in the d.c. area since monday that appear to be related but derek they're not certain of that. >> all right, gary nurenberg, we thank you. >> new at 11:00, seven people, including four andrea nakano firefighters, are taken to the hospital after an accident in glen burnie. this happened on richie highway near route 648. the fire fires were responding to an apartment fire when their

truck collided with a car. four of them were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. three people in that car were hurt, too. two were taken to baltimore shock trauma with serious but not life-threatening injuries. the third person had minor injuries. inside an aspen hill homes, the victim a young man. what remains a mystery is motive. ken molestina is live at the scene where it all happened. >> reporter: anita this is the 13000 block of superior street. neighbors tell me this is a quiet neighborhood. not a whole lot happens out here. of course, all of that changed earlier today when it became the scene of montgomery county's latest homicide investigation. >> the whole street was sealed off. >> reporter: when police

arrived they found a young man inside dead from an apparent gunshot wound, his identity not released. >> we're trying to determine just exactly what happened. it's still early. >> reporter: investigators say three young men, including the victim, were inside the house when this all went down. a man would is only identified as a young adult was subsequently taken into police custody for questioning. >> we're just talking with him at headquarters. we believe that we have the person who is there at the scene at the time of the shooting. >> reporter: as this homicide investigation continues well into the night, police officials say they don't believe this was gang related or a drug deal gone bad. they're hoping the man in their custody will cooperate and explain what led up to the shooting death. neighbors here are also left looking for answers. >> kind of scary to think because i was on my way to pick up my younger brother from the bus stop, so i didn't really know what was going on. >> reporter: that man in police

custody remains there tonight. he is being questioned. however, i'm told that he is not charged with anything at this hour. the name of the victim, the identity, also not released tonight as part of this investigation. we're live in aspen hill, ken molestina, 9news now. d.c. police are searching for suspects in the murder of a 20-month-old baby boy. this happened monday morning in the 3000 block of 30th street southeast. police say someone in a private car took the boy from that address to united medical center. the boy was then transported to children's hospital where he was pronounced dead. a rockville man behind bars after police say he tried to hire a hit man to kill his wife. the name daniel mendoza. police say the deal was $200

and a title to a car in exchange for killing the man's wife. >> mr. mendoza had been seeking someone to kill his wife. he said i want her dead. >> prosecutors say mendoza even went as far as going to the metro station to point out his wife to the hit man and show him her routes home. now he's being held without bond. a livelily exchange at a local meeting where commissioners were talking about what to do next. it was the focus of a recent 9news now investigation that some residents described as jaw dropping. this northwest washington liquor store on macarthur boulevard has allegedlily been selling to minors for years. andrea mccarren joins us now. >> reporter: anita, just this

afternoon, a hearing was held for the renewal of the liquor license. >> first i want to thank channel 9 for focusing attention. >> reporter: for the first time since our investigation, exposed town square mark as an alleged supplier of alcohol to minors across suburban washington, the neighborhood commission addressed the store's future. >> this is a horrible thing. it's in our backyard. >> they would sell to the underage, and they can still sell to underage, is that right? >> reporter: some commissioners were baffled and -- the store remained in business for weeks after our report, despite nearly 40 police citations issued to teenagers who purchase alcohol there. >> it is clearly in violation

of the law. why doesn't the agency put the license on hold asap and then figure out what they're going to do as opposed to allowing the store to continue to sell? are thingsing screwy here? >> i know that's breaking the law, too. >> reporter: the commission plans to make it clear what it thinks of town square market's apparent history. >> i think if we give justice time it will wind up working its way. >> reporter: the owner of town square market is now facing two. he will be in court next tuesday to face criminal charges. and abra is looking into his business practices to determine whether his store should have its license renew. every year the agency investigates 350 crashes

involving alcohol. that's the bad news. the good news, fairfax county is doing something about it. a grant will help police crack down on the people who sell alcohol to kids. who is selling it? we spoke with a 19-year-old police cadet who is helping carry out sting operations, and he says when it comes to buying booze without showing id he's had the most success at big- name grocery stores. >> reporter: do they ask for id and you say i don't have it? >> sometimes they do. sometimes they just ring it up, and we give them the cash and we're good to go. >> by the way, all you parents in virginia, it is illegal for you to host a party with alcohol for underage teens. an apology but no admission of guilt from karen tolls, a council woman accused of speeding at more than 100 miles per hour on the beltway. she spoke about this incident for the first time this afternoon but the council woman took no questions from the media. instead, she. >> i sin certainly regret the events that have transpired

our health alert tonight is about hormone replacement therapy. the initiative has tracked tons of thousands of women. it showed several years ago that the hormone combo estrogen and progestin could increase breast cancer danger. since then most doctors have been telling their patients, avoid hrt or use it for the shortest time possible. now researchers say women in that same major study what took estrogen alone actually had a lower breast cancer risk for up to five years after taking the pill. estrogen alone is usuallily prescribed only to women who have had a hysterectomy. experts say that hormone deserves another look. >> the school board that is meeting tonight in southern california might actually get to watch a little porn. why? to figure out whether one of their teachers is moonlighting
