investigation of the event. the montgomery county will be investigating the officer's actions relating to the shooting. >> reporter: certainly that's routine in a situation like this ask the officers are still being interviewed at this hour. tell me about the conditions of the suspect and the one officer we know that was -- injured. >> the suspect remains in critical condition. the officer was taken to a hospital, treated and released and is being interviewed now. >> reporter: do we know what started this activity other than the calm to police for the -- call to police for the shots fired? >> they reported when they arrived they heard shots as well on the scene. what led up to that, we don't know. but the metropolitan police department will be investigating that. >> reporter: no indication there was any other suspect, another person that the suspect may have been shooting at or with at the time? >> no indication thus far but again they will be conducting that investigation.

>> reporter: thank you very much. that's the very latest here from the scene, we're going to update you in a half hour. back to you mike, andrea? >> thank you delia. sheriff's deputies in calvert county, maryland are investigating the death of an infant in prince frederick. just after 6:30 last night deputies were called to the intersection of sixes and halloween roads. once they got there the body of the newborn was found in the trunk of the car. police say they know the owner of the vehicle but so far have made in arrests. the baby's body is now at the office for an autopsy. and police in bristow, virginia are investigating the death of a 3-month-old baby girl. police say she was found inside a home which appeared to be operating as an unlicensed day tear center. the home is in the 13,200 block of sapphire ridge place. the little girl was pronounced dead at the hospital police say there are no apparent signs of foul play. former prince george's county councilwoman leslie johnson is scheduled to begin

serving her prison sentenced to. she will be in the same facility where martha stewart was in jail. jackson son's corruption seem -- jack johnson corruption's scheme. he's in buttoner, north carolina. and an off-duty d.c. police officer is accused of shooting is transgender person and they are due in court today. kenneth fur is charged with assault and intent to kill and two counts of solicitation. the charges stem from a shoot last august which -- shooting last august which left one person injured after the officer allegedly tried to solicit a transgender prostitute. the former superintendent of the big branch mine in west virginia is expected to plead guilty to conspiracy charges. the charleston gazette reports federal prosecutors have requested a plea hearing for gary may. he'll admit to conspiring to

break safety laws at the big branch mine. in return he'll help prosecutors with their investigation. may is the highest ranking employee so far to face charges. it's 4:33 now. a look at the other things making news now. two people are dead after a shooting at the university of pittsburgh psychiatric clinic yesterday. police say the suspect opened fire in the lobby. the mayor said the gunman had two semiautomatic weapons and a quick police response is what helped save lives. police are still not sure of the motive. five states along the gulf are one step closer to receiving some much-needed help recovering from the 2010 bp oil spill. yesterday, the senate approved a measure which would use money from fines leveed against british petroleum to help states. under the clean water act bp could be fined anywhere to

we're looking at live doppler 9000 hd this morning, the showers now pulling away from washington. still heavier showers near the eastern shore. that's looking on live doppler 9000 hd. a queenstown, the gracerville headed out to dent and that's about the heaviest thing we've got and in virginia also watching the shower that area of showers pull away. it's now almost toward i-95. stafford maybe about 20 minutes. this will clear charles county in about 45 minutes or so and this will be the last of it over the next one to two hours we'll be done. as far as today skies will become partly sunny over the next few hours. colder air is moving in and we'll be down to the upper 40s by 9:00. back to 52 at noon. breezy this afternoon. not as windy as yesterday. with highs in the mid- to upper 50s. i'll be back in just a few minutes and we'll tell you all about the weekend and the time change and right now monika samtani's in with timesaver traffic. in southern maryland, route

grow and hire new workers. the package of half a dozen measures has the backing of president barack obama and has a good chance of becoming law. senate democrats say they will offer a similar package soon. meantime, marylanders get ready. you could soon be paying more in taxes. >> no way. >> yeah, crazy. the state senate budget and taxation committee adopted several tax hikes -- rather yesterday to help balance the state budget. the proposals would increase the state income tax rate and cigarette tax as well as impose sales state taxes an internet purchases but the plan would remove the mortgage deduction cap proposed by governor o'malley. they will send it to the full senate floor, lots of conversations about tax hikes in maryland. >> like a shell game. fix it here, move it here. >> it seems to take it all from the consumer. >> no? >> thank you. well, more teenagers apparently are smoking. we have a new report that we want to share with you about some pretty disturbing numbers.

hour range. highs mid upper 50s and by 8:00 down the 45. northwest winds at 16 and windchills could be down in the 30s. here's the rain that's been coming through during the overnight north and west of d.c. we are pretty much done. some heavier stuff to southern mod now and move -- maryland now and moved to the eastern shore and now east of annapolis this is what we're seeing there showing up. live doppler 9000 hd switching it as the sweep goes around for the west, it is quiet for the most part west of 95. but as we zoom and you'll see down 95 here, oh still across parts of prince william and stafford counties, southern fauquier, just about away from you, this is the lighter showers leftover. we have a heavier shower with them now around queenstown. we've been watching that moving off toward the east and gracenville. chester things are getting a little bit lighter for you but look you go across the bay, annapolis is just about done with the rain. that's the last of it for them and to the south and west just to show where the back edge of the rain is, almost to woodbridge. it's just about to goldvein. stafford, another 20 minutes or

so and this will clear southern maryland in about the next 90 minutes so two hours tops. -- to two hours tops. north and west, it's gotten cold. oakland down to 30 and 59 still at the tappahannock airport and 51 here in washington. gaithersburg now down into the 40s. so yeah, jackets are back after the lovely # 0s yesterday. -- 70s yesterday. right now looking outside our michael & son weather camera, we've got good visibility. white house there with the washington monument just in the background on the upper right of the picture. light showers on the hour at reagan national. next hour they will be dry. north northwesterly wind at 12 and the dew points are down to 41. the numbers are going to drop and nationally we're seeing a big ridge on the west coast and their weather is going to be quiet today. a lot of rain in parts of east texas. they had a lot yesterday. another piece of energy's coming across, watch back here, see how this area? see how this area just redevelops all the moisture once again? so that rain will be hitting

texas and you have all this rain, louisiana, mississippi, alabama, big rainstorm for them. for us we just have the showers overnight which are now pushing through it. holding us still for some snow showers up across the great lakes and new york. as we show you the futurecast though, the colder air moves in so today, temperatures will only top out mid- to upper 50s. a chilly night tonight down in the 30s. tomorrow, though, we look good. chilly about 50 and then here we are sunday morning at 4:00 a.m. with warmth is moving in to areas out to the west. so sunday we recover back in the 60s and 70ish come monday. the forecast today 57. it will be breezy. not nearly as warm as yesterday but still not bad. tonight 30s maybe even upper 20s north and west. still a little bit of the northwest breeze. tomorrow lighter winds and northwest 5 to 10 but only 50 and jacket weather tomorrow but we're back the 64 by sunday. and this is the weekend, clocks forward saturday night. we go back to daylight saving

i-70 out of frederick. damascus, clarksburg, everything is running smoothly. a live look into silver spring, no problems on route 29 at franklin avenue. coming up in my next report, an update on the accident in virginia at 4:55. but first, metro riders listen up. beginning tonight at 10:00, the shady grove, rockville and twin brook stations on the red line will all be closed for track work. the stations will reopen first thing on monday morning. shuttle bus service will be provided between the shady grove and white flynn stations. now trains on the blue and orange lines will share a single track between eastern market and stadium armory. mike back to you. today the maryland state senate is going to debate a bill which would ban cigarette smoking while kids are in the car. similar proposals have failed eight times since 2007. this year's version would make it illegal for anyone to light up inside a car with a kid 8 years old or younger. the debate over it looks to be just as heated this year as

it's been in years' past. . >> parents are more concerned about their children than we will ever be. they have an invested interest in what happens to their children. this is another intrusion of government on their private lives. >> guarantee you if their 3- year-olds had a lobbyist down here and they'd be marching on annapolis demanding that we pass this law. >> six other states including california, louisiana, arkansas already have laws banning smoking in cars when kids are in there. the numbers tracking teen smoking are shocking. one in five high schoolers smoke according to the study more than 80% of smokers start by the age of 18. the surgeon general's report is the first comprehensive look at youth tobacco in almost two decades. the products you use every day contain chemicals you may not be aware of. and some of them could cause health problems. >> one consumer group says you should know what's in the products you buy. ed lawrence has the story. >> reporter: buffy takes care of her body and reads the

labels on products she buys. she trusts that they are complete. >> if there's something on -- in a store especially a main store, a chain store, i am going to think that that product is safe. >> reporter: but the silent spring institute tested 213 everyday products for 66 compounds including bpas and others. >> they found of the 66 chemicals, they found 55 of them. >> reporter: the study found the highest concentrations of chemicals in fragrant products like perfume, air fresheners, dryer sheets and sunscreen. >> you probably have products with these chemicals all over your house, your bathroom, your laundry room, your kitchen. >> reporter: but if you want to avoid them it's difficult to know what to buy. >> the bottom line is they were testing for a number of these chemicals that were showing up in products and they weren't listed on the label. >> reporter: critics of the study say it has flaws including it tested products together in batches instead of

one by one. and the study doesn't show how much exposure to chemicals causes the health problems. they say new packaging regulations would help solve the problem. >> we need more labeling, these ingredients should be listed on the labels absolutely. >> i kind of assumed that everything is in the label. i shouldn't be left out in the dark of what will i'm getting. >> reporter: buffy says that information would help her make a choice about products she uses every day. edward lawrence for cbs news, maria dell ray, california. >> some of the more common products tested include vinyl shower curtains, surface cleaners, stain removers and even pillow protectors. more about chemicals and it's a victory looking out for your health. in the story from last week, two of the most famous recipes in the world will soon change. both coca-cola and pepsi are changing the way they make the care mel coloring -- caramel coloring used in the sodas. they're reducing the levels of a chemical that's been linked

to causing cancer in mice. in california the current level of the mandate needs a warning label. coca-cola released the following statement quote -- coke and pepsi say the change will not affect the look or taste of their sodas. hiv remains an ongoing crisis still to this day in parts of the united states. researchers studied six years where the virus is known to be more common and they found the hiv rate among black women is five times higher in those regions than the general populationings atlanta, washington, baltimore, newark, new york, and raleigh durham. researchers say those areas need more effective prevention strategies to stop the spread of hiv. it is coming up on 4:53.
