winds are still gusty out of the north and northwest now 20, 25, by noon 52 and a breezy afternoon with highs in the mid- to upper 50s and the drive home temperature of 54. unlike yesterday you will need the jackets. here's the rain over the last couple of hours and you can see the back edge over northern virginia and now approaching ice 95 and areas south and east of washington. we'll show you this on live doppler 9000 hd. cheering the beltway now in southern prince george's county, southern anne arundel. all of southern maryland and also starting to see this almost clearing 95 into stafford county but the heavier shower is now east of centreville and pulling away. and annapolis, you are done with the rain. shady side. maybe another 10, 20 minutes. st. michael's you need another half hour before this will clear you. quick look at temperatures before you go. down to the low 40s in hagerstown. winchester 43. la plata is 48 and we're 51.

to monika samtani with timesaver traffic now. good morning everybody, things are looking great, no problems to report if you're traveling on the beltway you may just find a few wet roadways but otherwise traffic volume friday morning. very, very light. if you're planning to head over on to the northbound side of i- 95 a heads-up there was a minor tractor-trailer accident after the occoquan river. sitting along the left side. inside the beltway. you can sew volumes are light and -- see volumes are light and moving well above the speed limit on the northbound side of 395. barely anybody there head up to the 14th street bridge. you'll make it to work on time. to the inbound side of i-66 again no problems out of manassas and centreville into fairfax. dulles toll road looks pretty much the same. all of the main corridors in tyson's corner as well and a live look inside the beltway. 66 at the bridge, a good indication of the potomac and anacostia river crossings this morning. coming up in my next report, a look into maryland at 5:10. a montgomery county officer is recovering this morning after

being shot during a gunfight with a suspect. >> this morning that suspect is in the hospital in critical condition. the shooting happened at eastern avenue in northwest d.c. and that's where we find our delia goncalves this morning. good morning delia. >> reporter: good morning andrea. we just talked to captain paul starks with montgomery county police. he confirmed that at this early hour the suspect is indeed still in critical and surgery at this hour although we don't know the exact condition and we don't know how many times he was shot. but the scene is still very active several hours after police first responded. it starts here at 13th and eastern and extends a block or two down. some video shot earlier in the evening. suspect was in the middle of the street firing his gun and somehow that led to an exchange of gunfire with police. three montgomery county police officers were on the scene though we don't know the one or all of them fired their weapons. listen to captain paul starks and hear what he has to say. >> at about 12:39 this morning,

montgomery county emergency call center received multiple calls for the sound of shots in the 8100 block of eastern avenue. officers from our third district responded to that area. when they arrived, they encountered an armed subject. shots were exchanged, subject was hit. and one officer was injured. >> reporter: now that officer who was injured was injured in the hasn't and treated and released at a -- hand and treated and released at a local hospital. all three officers are being very viewed can montgomery county is handling that part of the investigation. the internal part of the investigation. mpd and d.c., well, they're handing the actions of the suspect who was first firing his gun. you see two police jurisdictions are covering the scene because the scene actually splits right down the middle down to border of -- the

border of d.c. and silver spring. we have the two jurisdictions handling the case after this hour. coming up in my next report, at 5:30, i'll have a bit more on the police officers who were all involved in this shooting early this morning. back to you mike, andrea? >> thanks. okay, this morning the calvert county sheriff's department is trying to determine how an infant died. officers were called to the intersection of sixes and halloweens point roads just after 6:30 last night. they found the body of a baby in the trunk of a car. investigators say they know the owner of the car and at this point no arrests have been made. baby's body is now at the office for an autopsy. more envelopes filled with white powder were found at another school yesterday. similar envelopes were also found in a rest rabbit and a building that -- restaurant and a building that houses a government agency. it was toasted and -- tested and deemed harmless but the scares have kept them very busy. in the past few days six locations in the d.c. area got

these filled with the white boulder and also happened in six locations up and down the east coast as well. it's d day for leslie johnson. today johnson is scheduled to begin serving her sentence at alderson prison in west virginia. that's the same facility martha stewart served time. she will spend a year and a day behind bars for obstructing an investigation into her husband jack johnson's corruption scheme. he's serving his seven year sentence in north carolina. he began last month. now 60 d.c. classrooms are under scrutiny in relation to possible cheating on 2011 standardized tests. the "washington examiner" reports the office of the state superintendent of education identified 24 classrooms with unusual numbers of incorrect answers erased and changed to correct ones or classrooms with unusually high test score gains on the d.c. comprehensive assessment system's test. d.c. public schools identified

still a bit of a breeze. now to monika samtani and find out the commute looking this friday morning. north of town between 95, route 29 and route 270 and all of the northern corridors are incident-free. there's an accident in southern maryland and that's coming up in my next report,. making news now at 5:11, it lasted only 20 minutes but when the shooting happened two people were dead including the gunman after the suspect opened fire in the lobby of a psychiatric hospital at the university of pittsburgh. seven other people were injured and pittsburgh mayor says the gunman was armed with to semiautomatic -- two semiautomatic handguns and he was shot and killed by police. tom corbett says he wared the late -- wishes the late joe paterno had done more after telling child officials about the child sex abuse by jerry sandusky. his fellow university trustees were right to fire the legendary coach and before he

was fired paterno says he too wishes he would have been done more. police officers have the right to search your cell phone without a warrant. the ruling stems from an indiana case where a suspected drug dealer had his cell phone call logs searched by police. the decision also affects parts of illinois, indiana and wisconsin. however a local attorney believes it could set a precedent in d.c. because the judges' opinions are well respected. the lawyer also says it's your right to and police to get a warrant before searching your phone. well, we are getting closer and closer to the ipad 3 release date. >> but one expert says you may not want to rush out to buy it. at 5:18, five good reasons why you should wait to shell out the big bucks. we'll be back.

in the 40s and still some low 50s well south and east of d.c.. sunrise at 6:28. and then this morning, the sun will return here shortly. and then we're looking at temperatures struggling to get back to the low 50s by noon. winds will be out of the northwest 10 to 20 miles an hour and colder air is coming in. that's why we're not making too much progress here. this afternoon, mid, maybe upper 50s for highs with a 54- degree reading at 5:00 p.m. and a northwest wind still at about 18 miles an hour not as windy as yesterday but still a breezy day all behind this front which is now to the south and east and this rain is almost all south and east of us. little colder up here a few snow showers up in michigan and pennsylvania. just want to show you closer in what we're looking at. southern maryland, southern prince george's county, calvert, st. mary's, now east of i-95 and even over the stafford how quickly the rains are pulling away. quantico just about done as the rain will be crossing the potomac here in the next 10

minutes or so. lighter showers from waldorf down to la plata. down toward ridge and st. mary's city and over to the lower eastern shore but even shady side and baden you guys will be done with the showers very, very shortly. this morning, weather headlines the showers are pulling away. so they'll be done quickly. breezy and cooler today. highs only in the mid, maybe upper 50s. a chilly saturday. we'll be down in the 20s and 30s tomorrow morning with near 50 that's it for the high on saturday. and then that time change saturday night as we spring forward. set the clocks ahead one hour. looking at temps this morning, they're down in the mid 40s now. gaithersburg and bladensville at 44. we've got 45 for lovettsville and leesburg. centreville's 49 along with springfield and still 50-degree readings from alexandria, baden and fort belvoir. outside on the michael & son weather camera, clear skies -- clearing skies anyway.

and east. the temps this morning low 40s in the shenandoah valley. mid 40s frederick down to gaithersburg and temperatures still around 50 in d.c.. monika and the commute this friday morning. friday morning light. no problems to report in terms of big problems. there's one in southern maryland that i do want to tell you about. it's right here in oxon hill on brinkley road shut down between fisher road for the accident investigation. so you want to choose the alternate route there if you choose to use route 5 you will be absolutely fine. no problems as you head up to the beltway. and into oxon hill on the beltway to the wilson bridge. up north again no problems to report on 270 out of frederick, the beltway is running smoothly between college park and bethesda. first of all on the beltway here between new hampshire avenue where of course the volume is starting increase leaving new hampshire avenue into silver spring.

american legion bridge still running well at the potomac river. coming up in my next report, a look into virginia. back to you guys. thank you. a virginia family is houring the loss of their -- mourning the loss of their child this morning. >> a 3-month-old little girl died at a home that appeared to be operating as an unlicensed day care center. the home was on sapphire ridge place in bristow, virginia. police were called after the little girl was found unresponsive. she was pronounced dead at the hospital. and as of right now investigators sightly no sanes of -- there are no signs of foul play. metro knew about the failing brake part on some of its rail cars. one board member told the "washington post" metro had known for six years but did nothing about it. he says the transit agency created a plan to fix the problem but it was canceled for financial reasons. part of the brake system known as a friction range fell off -- ring fell off rail cars twice in the last five months including once in december. a report released yesterday says 98% of hubs on the 5,000

series cars have been replaced. montgomery county police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound in a suspect is in the hospital after being shot by officers. this all unfolded at the intersection of blare mill road in eastern avenue. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at the scene and been talking to investigators this morning. what do we know? >> reporter: investigators have confirmed to us the officer indeed is an eight year veteran of montgomery county police force. he has been treated and released from the hospital and currently being interviewed along -- interviewed along with two other officers in regards to what happened here. the suspect we don't know a whole lot about him at this point. but i can tell you he is in critical condition at washington hospital center. let's take a look at some video hot earlier today. -- shot earlier today. it all started with several reports of shots fired just after 12:30. in fact when police arrived they heard the shot themselves. the suspect was in the street approaching the officers when they exchanged gunfire and the

suspect was shot. one officer hit in the hand as well. there were a total of three officers on the scene including a rookie cop who just graduated from the academy two months ago we're told. he was still in training and in fact he responded here to the scene with his training officer. all three officers are now on routine administrative leave. what we don't know at this early hour is why the suspect was out here allegedly shooting himself in the first place. i'm sorry, shooting -- in the first place. d.c. police will handle that part of the investigation. you see because the scene borders both silver spring can the district and d.c. police will handle one portion of the investigation, montgomery county police will handle the internal investigation. mike, andrea back to you. >> thank you delia goncalves reporting live. supporters of maryland's gay marriage law say they've launched a petition to make sure the law is upheld should the issue be put to a public vote. the group marylanders for

into centerville. a live look at route 50 on the inbound side of 66 and again, you just got that normal volume forming right now as you leave route 50 toward 123 and the beltway all lanes are open right now. we'll go back to the maps which this time taking a look at the northbound side of i-95. you got the volume building out of woodbridge. it's across the occoquan river right now springfield, northbound side some volume here and on 395 no problems to the 14th street bridge. coming up in my next report, we'll focus on maryland roads. back to you mike. in many cases it seems to be missing from the public consciousness but it's a disease that's a national epidemic among women. we're talking about hiv/aids. tomorrow, is national women and girls' hiv/aids awareness day and organizers are hoping to help women turn the tide on this devastating disease. this morning i'm joined by latisha james from the women's collective. wow i was floored to understand

that a lot of people still consider this a really, really big problem, especially women. why is it such a -- fallen into the backburner kind of thing? >> well, mike i think what's happened with the hiv/aids epidemic is that a lot of people still see it as a gay man's disease. >> right. >> you know when it came on the scene 30 years ago that's what it was. it was seen in the gay population and a lot of people felt they didn't have to worry about it. but women now especially women of color are getting hit really hard. they have such small pools to choose from. we're least likely to mary outside of the -- mary outside of the race and you're talking about having unprotected sex. the rates are getting higher and higher especially among black women. >> the goal in this campaign is to make awareness of that? have protected sex. what are some of the suggestions? >> some of the suggestions are just one toic yourself.

we have the -- to educate yourself. we have the international aids conference coming in july. know your status and get tested and use protection. minimize the amount of partners that you're having. but definitely once you are armed with this knowledge, you know, the fact that black women are 15 times more likely than white women to be infected. >> wow. >> things like this need to be known in the community. >> this is important to you specifically yes? >> yes. it's very important to me. i was born to an hiv positive mother and i've been in this fight for a very long time. she unfortunately passed when i was very young and i took up the tog after this. >> there's an event going on the today that you would like people to participate in in addition to becoming more aware about this. >> i work for the women's collective and we are having a community event today called passport to health at the office, 1331 rhode island avenue northeast. everyone should come out. we'll have free hiv and std testing free education, games,

biker babes breaking those old stereotypes. professional women, older women like linda are among the fastest growing segment of the motorcycle community. >> you feel the wind. you taste the salt in the air. you -- you see the glimmers of light because nothing is obstructed. so to me it's a way of being full out there in nature and there's just nothing quite like the rush. when you're on that bike nobody knows who you are. they just see a woman rider. >> but there's even more to linda than that. she is a breast cancer survivor. >> i found a lump that was the size of a gumball and i wasn't worried because 85% of all lumps are benign. >> but several tests later doctors confirmed it was stage 1 breast cancer. good news because the cancer was detected early and less frightening heading into what linda calls mind curves because

of what she learned from riding a motorcycle. >> when you survivor there's something that comes about inside you that says look what i've done. >> her first time linda is retired fortune 100 executive make the bike survivor connection was seven years ago when her husband bill died of cancer and the business they built together folded. she was at a loss for what to do next. a friend suggested she register for a 2500-mile trip on a harley. she didn't know how to ride but took a crash course online and learned in 30 days. >> with the making is for me it gave me my self-esteem back. it showed me that i wasn't a quitter. >> after eight months of healing from a lumpectomy. radiation and breast reconstruction, linda is back on the bike and back on track. she finished a book about her journey managing change, loss and survival. she hopes the publish in the spring.
