66 is incident-free from manassas, centreville and fairfax. dulles toll road no problems out of leesburg. 270, here at old georgetown head road from frederick a few blake rights but -- brake lights but no big deals to report on 270 all the way down to the point where the lanes divide. the north side of down no problems on the beltway. a bit of volume now forming out of college park to silver spring. on the north side here at university boulevard as i said just slowing down bit through silver spring. coming up in my next report, we'll take another look around town at 6:12. mike? thanks monika. the top of the hour we are following breaking news now a man is hospitalized after being shot by police. >> and police say that suspect also shot an officer. this all happened early this morning at blare mill road in eastern avenue. that's right on border between northwest d.c. and silver spring. delia goncalves is on the d.c. side with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning andrea, police have been here for several hours, we have been

here reporting on this story for about an hour and a half now. and we've just learned new information we know now a bit more about the suspect. apparently he was shot right outside of his home we're toldpy police and they are confirming that the suspect lived here in the 8100 block of eastern avenue. the suspect is still in critical condition at washington hospital center. police are also telling us they will release a suspect's name rather as soon as his family is notified. we don't know why though he was shooting in the first place. but police say he was in the middle of the street firing a gun. when officers arrived, shots were exchanged. >> at about 12:39 this morning, montgomery county emergency call center received multiple calls for the sound of shots in the 8100 block of eastern avenue. officers from our third district responded to that area.

when they arrived, they encountered an armed subject. shots were exchanged. subject was hit. and one officer was injured. >> reporter: now that officer who was injured was injured on the hand and it is unclear though if that was a gunshot wound. there were a total of outlivers two of them not -- of three officers, two of them not injured but all three are being questioned by police at this hour. now since the scene borders silver spring and d.c. we have two jurisdictions and two police jurisdictions are investigating this scene. d.c. police investigating as to why the suspect was out here allegedly firing his gun in the first place. and montgomery county police, they're handling the internal investigation. report report i'll have a bit more -- coming up in my next report, i'll have a bit more about the background of the officers involved in this morning's shooting in about a half hour. back to you andrea. >> all right, delia goncalves live on the maryland border with silver spring this morning. two suspects in a murder in montgomery county are due in

court this afternoon. edwards and ramos are charged in connection with a murder wednesday in aspen hill. edwards is facing a second degree murder charge, and ramos with reckless endangerment. a man was shot to death inside a home on superior street and that man's name has not been released still and police are not commenting on a motive. we could learn today later today how a child died. the child was found in the trunk of a car. calvert county deputies were called to a home in prince frederick, maryland. someone made the discovery there. along the trailer park last night. investigators rushed to the area after someone called because they were concerned about that child's safety. when police got there they found the child in the chunk of a car. -- trunk of a car. former prince george's county councilwoman leslie johnson is expected to report to prison today. she'll serve a sentence at alderson prison in west virginia. that has been dubbed camp

cupcake. johnson obstructed a federal investigation case involving her husband, former prince george's county executive jack johnson. he began serving his seven year sentence in north carolina last month. help to police or avails of your cites? civil -- a violation of your rights? civil liberties are upset about the ruling about police being able to search your cell phone. and it said the court that it did not violate his fourth amendment rights, right now the rule only applies in that jurisdiction but it could be followed by others soon. local attorney steve lecker has this advice -- >> just because they're stopped you have the right to say no a police officer and say if outlie that's probable cause there, seek a warrant. >> the rules for a warrantless search are very specific.

tuesday and gingrich canceled plans to visit kansas. that state holds its caucus tomorrow. in a few hours, president obama will leave the white house for prince george, virginia which is near richmond, here's going to tour an aerospace facility near there. all right, here's the question -- should you be allowed to smoke in your own car if there are children in the car with you? that's the issue before the maryland state senate today. >> the senate will debate this issue in annapolis. scott broom has a look at the proposed law and reaction to it. >> smoking in the car with kids is not good at all. >> kids should snot be around smoking -- not be around smoking. >> reporter: no doubt about it. nobody here thinks smoking with kids in the car is a good idea. >> the kids they don't have a choice. >> come down with all kinds of cancers. >> reporter: not even the smoker. a smoker in favor of smoking regulation? i'm surprised by that. >> i care about the kids nowadays. >> reporter: but in maryland's

legislature, proposed bans on smoking with kids in the car has been shot down eight times since 2007. and this year another fight is brewing. over a bill that would ban smoking with kids under 8. 8 years old. with republican senator ed riley reeddy to lead the open -- ready to lead the opposition. aren't you afraid for the kids? >> parents are more concerned about their children than we will ever be. they have an invest interest in what happens to their children. this is another intrusion of government on their private lives. >> reporter: he's on the other side. >> i guarantee you if those 3- year-olds had a lobbyist down here and they were -- they'd be marching on annapolis demanding we pass the law. >> reporter: the science on this is a slam dunk. a 2006 harvard school of public health stud did found that inside a car with a smoker contaminants are hazardous even for the general public and they are seven times past the unhealthy level for kids.

74. by noon only 52. kind of breezy with a northwesterly wind at 10 to 20. we've had some gusts of 30 already this morning out at dulles airport this past hour. looking at the rain the morning pulling quickly away to the east and southeast. still some rain in the parts of the northern neck and eastern shore but for us we're done with it. there's lusby and leonard town. st. mayry's another 20 minutes or so and the eastern shore another hour. 43 in frederick and still 50 in annapolis and at reagan national and highs today in the mid- to upper 50s. right now monika has a look at timesaver traffic and new accident to tell you about. that's right this one is in virginia we're going to take a live look here from sky 9 and i'm going to say this as clearly as possible. it's on the eastbound side of the dulles access road at the merge with inbound i-66. and you can see right now they are not letting traffic merge

we've been following all morning. a police involved shooting along the d.c. maryland border. >> just after midnight at blare mill road in eastern avenue. that's on the border between northwest d.c. and silver spring, maryland. that's where delia goncalves is live this morning. delia? >> reporter: andrea and because of the location here we have two police jurisdictions handling the investigation. mpd and montgomery county police and we can tell you at this hour it appears the suspected may have been shot outside his home. police where r now confirming to us -- are now confirming to us the suspect lived here in the 8100 block of eastern avenue. a look at some video shot earlier today. the suspect is still in critical condition. police received several calls about shots being fired in the neighborhood. when officers arrived just after 12:30. they spotted the suspect in the middle of eastern avenue firing his gun. shots were exchanged. one officer an eight year veteran of the force was injured in the hand. the suspect shot several times,

there were a tea toll after three -- total of three megacounty police officers -- montgomery county police officers on the scene including a rookie cop who just garage washington nationalsed the academy -- graduated the academy three months ago. we can tell you that all three are now on routine administrative leave. what we don't know at this point several important questions. how many shots were fired and how many officers discharged chair weapons? montgomery county police handling that part of the investigation. d.c. police looking into why the suspect was out here in the first place. we'll have much more on this story as it continues to develop through the day. back to you mike, andrea? >> thank you delia. reporting live in northwest on the border with maryland this morning. in other news investigators are working the find out who's mailing envelopes full of white powder to d.c. schools and business. yesterday hazardous material crews suited up to investigate powder mailed to bowen elementary. a school employee came in

contact with the substance after opening the envelope. >> when i am kind of upset sir because i want my grandchild out of there and they won't let us in. >> a second envelope was mailed to the vienna restaurant at 12th and 8th streets northwest. a chef came in contact with the powder, in both cases the substance was deemed harmless. don't if concerned if you see a lot of police in the virginia square neighborhood of arlington today. it is only a test. county police will be holing a training exercise at oakland park. that's at wilson boulevard and north oakland street. the drill will run from 9:00 this morning until 4:00 this afternoon. some parking meters in the area will be off-limits because of the drill. we have a follow-up now to a story we first brought to you tuesday morning. coke and pepsi are changing their formulas. they're going to remove the formula which gives the colas the distinctive brown color you

unemployment. there are still less internships available than years ago. so it's a very competitive market. the best thing you can do the you're looking for an internship is to get started right now. >> how do we do that? what's the best method? >> it starts with the career services center at the university or college but you know like any -- any job, most internships are found through networking and through personal relationships. so using your personal networks, friends, families, who are working at companies is always going to be the best way to do it. and you want to start tapping those resources today. >> what about paid internships? you know in the tv business a lot of the stuff is for credits so the thought of a paid internship sounds like shangri- la but they are actually out there right? >> they are out there especially in some high demand areas like accounting, i. t. et cetera, you can get paid internships, you can use paid staffing firms as a way to get
