are going to take a live look near the prince william parkway. again as you can see monday morning no blues here. up to springfield, we'll take a live look as well 395 at the 14th street bridge. we'll take a look now in southern maryland. one accident i need you to know about. this one is westbound on wood yard road east of branch avenue and crews have been on the scene for a bit here. be aware of that. branch avenue itself if you are planning to head up into college park using the beltway, in prince george's county using beltway, all the lanes are open. a university of maryland student is undergoing psychiatric testing after he threatened to go on a killing rampage on the college park campus. >> it brings to mind the horrible shootings in chardon,

ohio and the virginia tech shootings. what led to the arrest? >> reporter: fortunately a good ending here in this case for the students and faculty. and the community around college park. it was a former student who served as a police aide on campus who first alerted authorities to this threat. the picture of this young man is alexander song. he was arrested saturday morning without incident and without any weapons on him, we are told. the alum noticed disturbing posts about a shooting rampage on campus that was to take place sunday. here's a song that he wrote. quote i will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus. hopefully i will kill enough people to make it to national news. he also wrote, police say, quote stay away from the mall tomorrow at 1:30. song has been charged with a misdemeanor, that misdemeanor

is disturbing the orderly conduct of campus. he faces up to $2500 in fines and/or prison time of up to six months. that of course, is after he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation. coming up in my next live report, i'll have more on who this 19-year-old student is. back to you. thank you delia. he was serving his fourth tour of duty in the region, his first in afghanistan. this morning an american soldier is in custody after a violent shooting rampage that killed 16 afghan civilians, nine children and three women were among the dead. the attacks took place near a u.s. base in kandahar. the suspect returned to his base in kandahar after the shooting. president obama is vowing to get the facts as quickly as possible and to hold accountable anyone

responsible. the afghan president hamid karzei says it is unfortunate. >> we are looking with the village elders into the background what actually happened in the villages. >> military officials say they do expect protests to break out across afghanistan in response to the weekend's shooting. maryland governor o'malley and virginia governor had these reactions to the rampage. >> it is tragic. we have so many brave men and women for now in global war on terror have done marvelous work in iraq and afghanistan and other places and winning, doing good work. yet one incident like this in the minds of the civilian population, when we are trying to win their hearts and minds as well as the battle against terrorists. >> this latest incident

underscores how important it is for us to conclude our involvement in afghanistan, as we have in iraq. i agree with governor mcdonald. so many men and women are serving hon rap ranably and well but incidents like this happen some war zones. it is very important we bring our troops home as soon as possible. >> at this point, we have learned he is an army staff sergeant from joint base lewis mccord, which is in washington state. the race for the republican nomination for president has moved to the deep south. the candidates are gearing up for crucial primaries tuesday in mississippi and alabama. mitt romney continues to lead but rick santorum says he is making strides and feels confident if he could go head to head with romney, he would win. newt gingrich, though, says he is not leaving the race. >> we think the folks in mississippi and alabama are going to vote for the

morning at -- the numbers the dow this morning up, the nasdaq up by 18. ups getting closer to a delivery marriage with europe's second largest delivery package company. tnt express rejected the deal last month. the two sides are said to be getting closer to a deal such as ups preserving jobs at it nt in europe. want to make an additional $650,000? go to college. a new study says typical college grads earn about $650,000 more than their peers with a high school diploma over the course of 30 years. after you crunch the numbers college grads come out ahead by over just half a million bucks.

broker a ceasefire. cross firefighting between the gaza strip and israel is not letting up. israeli air strikes killed 18 people. all but two, a boy and a farmer, are believed to have been militants. egypt tried to mediate a ceasefire but failed to end the worst violence in more than a year. the israeli defense minister says rocket attacks from two small groups, not hamas. howard is up next with your back to work forecast. plus we'll have some of your responses to today's question of the morning. we'll be back.

today we have temperatures shooting well up in the 60s and floor director joy can't imagine me working. had the drill out the chop saw, table saw. >> we were doing it. 39 and 52 at the bus stop this morning. with sunshine and high clouds as we get into the afternoon hours, by the way, sunrise 7:23 daylight savings time. clouds increasing -w we star in the upper 40s in town. 11:00 a.m., 56. south winds at 10 miles per hour. temperatures near 70. we have rain coming in tonight, maybe even early tomorrow coming up to chicago, milwaukee, cincinnati, indianapolis as well. nashville, much of kentucky getting low showers and it is all moving in our direction.

under clear to partly cloudy skies. college park down to 48. leesburg down to 34 degrees. down to our south at 37, prince george's county along with bethesda at 44. partly cloudy skies on our michael and son weather camera. makes it feel like 42 on that wind chill. to the middle of the country, this is the storm system that will affect us tonight and maybe tomorrow about some showers. classic comma shape, low pressure spinning through iowa moving off toward the northeast. showers and storms extending down toward the gulf of mexico, louisiana, mississippi, alabama and up to the north. flying through chicago looks like the bulk of the morning rain will be north and east of there though. around here we are just looking at these high clouds.

i think we could have a real pretty sunrise. in fact we go through the 5:00 hour and you'll notice how the clouds are really thickening up here in the shenandoah valley with the showers moving in tonight here. swatches of green and that would be rain showers indicated on the futurecast. tomorrow morning with potentially the heavier stuff. we'll see some sunshine here midday. but look at the afternoon. potentially a few showers maybe a rumble of thunder here, especially south and east of town. temperatures tomorrow well up into the 70s, once again even wednesday looking pretty good. today 6, pleasant increase in clouds. showers tonight. stray shower tomorrow afternoon. 77 after only dipping into about the 50, 55 range tonight. wednesday we are in the mid- 70s. do you like it feeling like

late april, mid-may? friday at 75, although another storm system could bring us showers and storms later friday into saturday. my wife is running age half marathon. if it rains saturday, i will be in the dog house. showers in the forecast monika, 72. wait and see, right howard? right now things are looking i guess okay for a monday morning. there are a couple of accidents i need to tell you about. first of all let's start with the good news. southbound 270, right into clarksburg, the lanes are open. down into the part where the lanes divide. at the beltway near new hampshire avenue, this is what gets a little heavy early on. i think you are good to go through silver spring on the outer loop of the beltway leaving college park. back over at the map on the northbound side of the bw parkway, just happened right near 202. the left lane is blocked southbound should be open heading into northeast. we'll take a live look at the wilson bridge south of town.

coming up in my next report an update on that accident at 5:25. back to you guys. get this. have you ever had one of those flights that really make you reluck tan to get on a plane again? >> yes. this one might rank up with yours. as the plane is taxiing for take off, someone goes crazy in the aisles. but it is a flight attendant. >> crazy. this happened aboard an american airlines flight. passengers say the screaming flight attendant warned the plane was going to crash and alluded to the 9/11 terror attacks. >> i think the situation would have been extremely out of control, and i thank god we were not in the air. >> wow. passengers held the flight attendant until airport are police arrived. she was taken into custody for evaluation. american airlines replaced the

looks like it will be cloudy, 68 degrees. rain this morning down across parts of the tennessee and ohio valley. this area of moisture is going to head our way. we expect a few showers as we head into the night time hours. mid-30s for places like cumberland and manassas leesburg, 43. up to 0 in fred ricksburg, wesy at 46 here in dc, southern maryland. highs this afternoon mid-60s on the bay. upper 60s to around 70 though in most other areas. it is now 50:00. feels like -- it is now 5:30, feels like 4:30. >> reporter: the brunswick line is running late already this morning 10 minutes. we have been talking about quite a few accidents. this one on the northbound side of the bw parkway.

north 202 road apparently a hit and run accident. four vehicles involved and police are on the scene. lots of activity on the northbound side of the bw parkway. only the right lane currently is getting by. so keep that in mind. southbound side you should be okay. a live look further into the northeast. you are going to be okay. we'll go back over to the maps and this time over to the other side. no problems to report. heading for the beltway where we'll look right now. 270 at 121, all lanes are open. the a university of maryland student has been suspended from campus and is now facing charges after he allegedly threatened to go on a killing rampage delia has more. >> reporter: good morning. the 1-year-old suspect, alexander song of howard county, he was once an active honor student here on campus right

now. he is in the hospital undergoing a psychiatric evaluation for posting these threats. we'll look at what he wrote online that was read by a former student who chats with him online. i will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus. he is referring to sunday. hopefully i will kill enough people to make it to the national news. stay away from the mall tomorrow at 1:30. song was set to graduate in 2014. he was an honor student on campus and a member of the elite gemstone program where students work with faculty to conduct research on the link between science and technology with society. his campus roommate told the newspaper he knew nothing of the threat but song appeared to be stressed and he thought it was school work related. coming up in my next live report i'll have more on the charges that song now faces, and how students here on campus learned of this threat.

back to you andrea, mike. thank you delia. wow. the hunt is on for a gunman who shot a man inside an i-hop in columbia lights this weekend. shots rang out at 6:30 sunday morning. two men got in an argument and one of them pulled out a pistol and shot the other in the chest. people who live and shop in that area were shaken by the news. >> it is a neighborhood in change. you have a lot of haves and have nots, and there is a lot of tension in the neighborhood. >> at this point authorities are not saying what the men were arguing about. they believe the shooting is an isolated incident. >> it is 5:33. time for another your money report now. jessica doyle is back. wealthy americans aren't as optimistic about the economy as we would think. >> reporter: it is surprising. a new study studies the lifestyle and spending patterns of wealthier americans. there is a lot of pessimism out

there 63% say the u.s. is still in a recession. and 14% said the recession will never end. this study, conducted although economists say the recession ended all the way back in 2009. employment gains are starting to pick up momentum and some think the trend could stick with us for some time. a couple of reasons why a slowly improving how housing -- housing market and gridlock that appears to have the job market better able to withstand. european austeritity sounds nice. the swiss just actually voted down a mandate for six weeks of paid vacation a year. that would have raised the minimum holiday time from four weeks to six weeks. that is the standard used in germany, italy, russia and

when police arrived at a bethesda store to find one young woman decease and one woman tied-up. hugh murray made a bittersweet appearance at the bethesda lou lem mondes -- lemons store. >> my wife and i came to be in dc to commemorate an activity jaina enjoyed and a race she has run in the past. >> reporter: jaina's parents were too upset to come. but they sent this arrangement. >> my parents and my brother and his family stayed in the houston area and went to the gravesite. >> reporter: some of jaina's friends brought flowers too.

>> i want them to see that people loved who she was. >> reporter: the small gathering was meant to remember and honor the young woman. >> everybody in there was full of life and celebrating jaina's life. >> reporter: coworker britney norwood was convicted of murdering jaina and trying to cover-up the fact by complaining the -- claiming the pair had been sexually assault by two masked men. >> you start to re-live all those moments. yet that is the important part. with pain comes release. >> reporter: even though today marks the one year anniversary of jaina murray's murder, the folks who brought the flowers hearsay they did it to celebrate her life. in bethesda. britney norwood is serving a

life sentence -- for murdering murray. someone stole more than 60 boxes of girl scout cookies from a family van, which is about $260,000 worth of cookies. mark sexton had loaded the cookies into the family van so his nine-year-old daughter could start his deliveries. >> to know they stole 66 boxes of girl scout cookies, my daughter was just a mess. it was heartbreaking. >> if you see somebody selling cookies at a grocery store and they don't quite look like the girl scout type, perhaps that might be something we need to know about. >> police recovered 46 of the stolen boxes of cookies a few blocks from the sexton's home but the rest are still missing in local boy scouts continue their efforts to help victims of japan's earthquake and tsunami. troop 964 hosted its 14th

annual model train show. all proceeds from the show are being donated to our troops in japan. we have joined up with him as a brother troop and all the proceeds from this show was going to go to that troop so they can rebuild. the troop two told us their history ended a year ago with the tsunami. their future starts today with troop 964. some 160 local scouts will earn their merit badges working at the model train show. sunday's beautiful weather provided a great backdrop for all sorts of activity. taking a walk. dining al fresco. even ice skating despite the warmer temperatures. sunny skies, things are moving along. >> i decided why not try it out, i grabbed my skates, came back here. it's been a lot of fun.
