lots of showers up toward ohio. that will be coming in tonight with a chance for showers. today we'll see the clouds increase in the afternoon. and the chill this morning. 30s in manassas and fredericksburg. easton 41. 43 in la plata. if we can get the clouds to hold off long enough, we can make 70 in manassas and culpepper. a really good start to the week let's find out about the morning commute monday. don't like the stats with the increased accidents. >> reporter: no and here's one northbound on the bw parkway north of route 202 but before route 50. you can see the flare set up in one lane. luckily it is against the rush hour flow. you still want to be aware of it. we'll show you where it is on the map. again northbound side with only one lane getting by.

southbound it done seem to be attracting too much attention early this morning. let's go over to the northbound side of i-95. looks great from dale city. traffic forming into wide bridge. a live look, looking fine. no big deals to report as you head into springfield. we'll go back over to the maps, all the crossings are type. a live look on pennsylvania avenue here at the willard hotel and the normal rush hour flow. back to you guys. police at the university of maryland say they are not sure if the student was serious or was just looking for attention when he threatened to shoot up the campus and but they didn't take any chances. they arrested that student. delia is live in college park. >> reporter: good morning andrea and mike. police had to act quickly because of the nature of the threats. they took them very seriously. they learned about the threats on saturday morning and by sunday morning an arrest was

made. police officers caught up with 19-year-old alexander song of howard county. he had no weapons on him and we are told a check of his dorm room also came out clean. this is what a former student read online. i will be on a shooting rampage tomorrow. hopefully i will kill enough people to make it to national news stay away from the mall tomorrow at 1:30. of course those were the words posted online by alexander song, referencing a shooting rampage that was to take place here on campus on sunday. even though police first learned about those threats on saturday, arrested song sunday, students here on campus did not receive their e-mail text alert about this incident until last night at 11:30. many say that is simply way too late. they spent all day worrying

after seeing police barging into a dorm without any explanation. so they want some more explanation as to why it took so long. we are still waiting from police as to why their response was delayed, apparently, in this case. coming up in my next live report, we'll have more on who alexander song is. back to you andrea. today the defense begins this case in a pair of lawsuits over the 2007 shootings at virginia tech. 31 students and a professor were killed. the family say -- families say the school did not properly warn students. it happened two hours inside the classroom building. the trial begins today for dr. karen murphy, the veterinarian from bristow,

virginia, charged with leaving her two-year-old son in a minivan for several hours on a hot june day. murphy says she forgot to drop off the boy at daycare. he died. murphy's lawyers are calling it a tragic accident. prosecutors agree but say it wasn't the first time she had left the boy in the minivan. the cost of your commute might actually go down. the senate approved restoring benefits as part of a massive transportation spending bill. democrats are hoping the house is going to follow suit. today we are urging the house both democrats and republicans to take that same deduction that we passed in the senate for mass transit, put it into their highway bill and we can restore the deduction. next year and also retroactively.

the benefit allowed commuters to set aside a benefit for $230 for taxes. the average price of gas in our region jumped 2 cents a gallon. dc area $3.85. up 24 cents from just a month ago. nationwide the average is now $3.80 a gallon. jessica doyle is watching what little money we have left in your money report. this is a scam that goes after people who go to church. really terrible situations. scammers are targeting the elderly and low income church goers. and now the irs is promising free money by urging targets to claim fraudulent tax refunds. the nationwide scheme reaches victims through flyers and online. it claims taxpayers can receive

nonexistent refunds and other credits for which they don't qualify. then the thieves collect big fees for bogus services and run off to the within i. -- with the money jobs for 35-24-year-olds jumped to 35 million in february. their unemployment rate fell to 8.7%, the lowest level since january of 2009. our partners at usa today report younger workers were hurt more. since many employers laid off entry levels first. it could take awhile to get your hot little hands on the new ipad. apple already sold out. app sel now telling buyers that orders will not ship for up to three weeks. in the u.s. and canada, all ipad pre orders will ship on march 19th. that is three days after the on sale dates.
