veterinarian karen murphy left her toddler in it a hot van last july. charges were reduce and murphy pled guilty to misdemeanor child neglect charges. prosecutors agreed the death of the boy was an accident. >> i couldn't see that the felony would serve justice. she would not have, she wouldn't be able to practice medicine any more. we wouldn't be able to use her at the animal shelter. and to hut her -- to put her in the pen ten try or subject her to the penitentiary i don't feel was appropriate in there case. >> murphy did not receive jail time but still has to serve three years of probation and complete 400 hours of community service. a university of maryland student is undergoing psychiatric evaluation after posting an online threat, promising to go on a shooting rampage at the school. campus police say the web message from 19-year-old

alexander song claimed a shooting spree would kill enough people to make it national news. >> reporter: students returned to classes today shocked yet relieved. there is no longer a threat. >> i was very scared. i thought of the virginia tech thing. >> reporter: 1-year-old sophomore alexander song arrested for posting threats about a shooting rampage at college park. a former student who chats with song online read the post saturday and quickly called police. they ready will be in a shooting rampage tomorrow on campus. hopefully i kill enough people to make it to national news. stay away from the mall at 1:30. >> i would not think that would happen here. especially like a lot of the kids are all, i guess a lot of pressure. >> reporter: song was an honor student and a member of the exclusive gemstone program for science and technology research. the howard county teen was arrested on campus sunday morning without incident or weapons on him.

police say a search of his dorm room came up clean as well. >> i think they did the right thing in the situation. >> reporter: police notified students via e-mail 11:30 sunday night, 13 hours after song's arrest, and after, police say, rumors started circulating around campus and frantic parents called police. >> are they hiding something? why was it at night? >> reporter: police tell us they informed students on a case by case basis. however now they say they think they could have told students sooner about this incident. so now, they'll review their policy and consider using social media as a better tool. in college park, 9news now. >> police say song is charged with disturbing the orderly conduct of university activities, that is a misdemeanor. he has been suspend and is banned from campus. the defense received its chance today to present evidence stemming from a pair of lawsuits over the 2007 shootings at virginia tech. 31 students and a profess tore

were -- professor were killed the school says it believed the first initial murders were from a domestic dispute and did for the want to cause a panic on campus. trustees at penn state say a failure by the late football coach joe paterno to follow-up on a sexual abuse allegation against former assistant jerry sandusky quote constituted a failure of leadership. that ultimately led to his firing in november. a report issued today by the trustee says the board decided to fire coach paterno after learning details of his testimony before a grand jury. the board decided to fire paterno by phone because his home was surrounded of media. the coach died of lung cancer in january. police want to find two people of interest in a shooting inside a columbia heights restaurant. a man was shot in the chest inside the i-hop on everybodying

street northwest. he is expected to survive. police want to talk with a man and woman seen leaving the restaurant just after the shooting. and district police have shut down a northwest washington restaurant after a tabbing there this weekend. police say a fight broke out between two men at the island cafe. one man was stabbed in the stomach. he is expected to survive. police chief lanier ordered the restaurant to remain closed for up to 96 hours pending a review from the city's liquor board. this weekend marked the one year anniversary of one of the area's most notorious crime. jaina murray was beaten to death inside the lou lemon store in 2011. her coworker, britney norwood, was convicted of the crime. murray's brother and sister-in-law came to dc to mark the milestone. >> we ran the 8 k, race down in

welcome back to 9news at noon. the taliban is vowing revenge after an american soldier went on a deadly shooting spree in afghanistan. 16 were killed, including several children. the soldier is currently in custody and defense secretary leon panetta says a full investigation is underway. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: president obama called the killings tragic and shocking. the white house says he called

president karzai to send condolences. >> the afghan people with stand pain and collateral damage, but murder is something, something that they totally abhor, and when that happens, they really want justice. >> reporter: the military says the suspect is from joint base lewis in washington state. a coffee house near the base, operated by veterans, is planning a vigil today. >> if this guy is traumatized being sent overseas and basically a time bomb waiting to go off. things like there don't show the people of afghanistan that we are actually there to help them. >> reporter: a distant learning professor for troops in afghanistan believes multiple tours of duty are taking their toll. >> i thought of how many of them are on their third or fourth or fifth tour of duty.

and i said what can you expect? >> reporter: senate majority leader harry reid is also weighing in. >> our troops are under such tremendous pressure in afghanistan. it is a war like no other war we have been involved in. i think we are on the right track to get out as soon as we can. >> reporter: i'm greg black for 9news now. as we just heard american combat troops are scheduled to leave afghanistan by 2014. and the suspected gunman in the afghan massacre was based outside seattle washington. it is one of the largest military bases in the u.s. and one of the most troubled. it has come under fire for the behavior of many of its soldiers. some say it came as no surprise this latest gunman came from that joint base lewis mcchord. >> it had trouble both when it was over in the afghanistan with the kill team of the rogue

hero central. rebuilding together at washington, d.c. makes free repairs for low income homeowners. especially veterans, the elderly, disabled, and families with children. they also renovate community facilities that serve their target population. >> what we do is perform free repairs at community facilities all around the city. many of them focus on services to the homeless community like the one we are working on today. where homeless families are served, they have a place to wash their clothes, so we got them a new wash and drier, they have a place to get a meal. >> today volunteers from the washington nationals are working at shirley's place. a homeless hospitality center that offers showers, food, and a comforting environment. >> this is something we look forward to with the nationals every year. we do this once a year, out in the community and really get a lot of personal satisfaction out of doing this type of project.

feature. follow this cloud coming around the base. that is going to bring maybe 80 miles per hour win gusts to the central washington oregon coast. we have the showers moving up into the great lakes. these showers extend down toward the gulf of mexico. this moisture is going to head toward us tonight even tomorrow along with warmer temperatures than even what we are dealing with today. the futurecast here come some of those clouds by 5:00 p.m. some of those showers not too many of them. after midnight, look at the showers east of i 99. we'll be dealing with that overnight. a few showers early. this will sweep south and east of us. a nice break for lunch time and potentially a few more showers pop tomorrow afternoon. really very spring like out there with temperatures way above average. don't take things out. we could still get frost or freezing weather. i mean, it is early in the season. we are not into the heart of the growing season despite the temp. 50 to 55 tonight with the
